Happy International Women’s Day, everyone! In honor of the day, we here at BtT are excited to celebrate some of our favorite women working in anime, manga, and light novels.
This is our second year marking the holiday in this way. When I started this project last year, I was under the impression that these industries were still pretty much a man’s game, with just a handful of women managing to rise to prominent roles. That’s the stereotype, right? And it’s true that these industries are not exactly winning any awards for basic things like representation, pay equity, or support for parental leave or childcare provision. The industry has a long way to go before these kinds of things become the standard. (Which is partly why studios like KyoAni stand out so much for how they flourish in these vital areas! Check out last year’s post for more on this!)
But you know what I’ve learned in the year since the inaugural IWD post? There are actually a lot of women in key roles, leading the creation and production of our favorite works of anime, manga and light novels. A LOT! We just don’t realize who they are. That’s why we’re excited to continue this series today, so that we at BtT can do our bit to shine a little light on these wonderful creatives and honor the hard work they’ve done for our entertainment and edification!
So here is a celebration of a few more women who, like last year’s line-up, have touched our hearts, tickled our funny bones, and dazzled our eyes with their work, and who have each, in her own way, made our lives just that little bit richer.

Time passes, people leave, we become alone again. If we don't accept that fact, memory erodes the present and exhausts the mind until it ages us and ails us.

Shoko's Smile by Choi Eunyoung - Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5)
”I was watching someone who'd had a piece of her mind shattered and found myself basking in an odd sense, of superiority.”
Shoko’s Smile is a short story collection about the lives of women in South Korea. The collection shows the hardships of what is expected of you as a woman single or married, the hard relationships that sometimes exist within family and even if you, as a woman, should speak about crimes the government has committed or if it would be better (and safer) to keep quiet.
It also explores the concept of having friends across different cultures, and how that can be challenging, especially if your countries do not have an amicable past with each other. Those differences can break or make a relationship.
I really enjoyed reading different perspectives of how one’s culture can be damaging in people’s upbringing and how it can shape their way of thinking.
”Despite my two feet resting on such uncertainty, (…) I had deluded myself into could plan my future.”
One thing shoko’s smile does perfectly is showing a real depiction of a lost and confused person in their twenties. As you read, the characters go through different struggles as they themselves navigate and discover their potential in a nation that is so unequal and that offers little opportunities. All of this while trying to make your family proud by doing what is expected of you as a korean woman.
”I was given constant warnings that women in particular needed to be careful about how they were perceived, that their future as a researcher was doomed once people started disparaging them behind their back.”
To get the full potential of this book and comprehend it you need to know Korea’s history and culture. These stories go in detail about some incidents that affected the lives of South Korean people. The last two stories are about the ferry incident in 2014 where more than 300 people lost their lives, most of them being high school students, and they’re two of the most heartbreaking stories i’ve ever read.
conclusion: This book is beautifully written and each story is deeply touching, you feel connected to each one. A great debut and i can't wait to read Choi Eunyoung's next work.

That fear had driven me since childhood and raised me into an adult who didn’t look so precarious on the outside. It had urged me not to be me, to never stop evolving into a better person. If I didn’t change, if I didn’t improve, I would be erased from this world.

THE GROUP
Very few coed groups can touch IDOLMAKER in fame, concept ambition and of course, number! Set under the managment of MBN Entertainment and japanese game developing studio FURTA since their conception in 2016, IDOLMAKER is a franchise like no other, setting their ever expanding roster of K-Pop Idols to voice act playable chracters in their sci-fi asymmetrical multiplayer survival game, Crewmaker Battle Universe. If that doesn't already make them unique enough, the group functions under a voting system, meaning comeback lineups and asthetics get voted on by their fans, MAXIs, via their official website.
IDOLMAKER, often shortned to IDMK, defies all odds and rumors of there being no such thing as healthy competition: united like a true dream team, with some people having ties going deeper then blood amongst them, they know that while stuck inside of a trancherous money empire like MBN, all they can really do is watch each other's backs and pray for the worse won't get them.

THE CONNECTIONS
LOOPiN - Colleges: While the bubblying romance between Seungsoo and Gayoung is what brings the two groups together, the friendship and music exchange between LOOPiN and IDMK is what keeps them all together. Seeing Dylan's growing necessity for friends outside of his band, Ring and Tabitha attempt to take him under their partying set of wings, not without it's fair share of complications. In order to get back on the good graces of his fleeting, long distance situationship with former Boy Of The Week member Kohei, Daewon attempts to reunite him with Haruki, his good pre-debut friend, as well as get to the bottom of who sabotaged him out of the project back on the day, and why.
NIGHT CHILD / NTCD - Rivals: With IDOLMAKER's company being a subsidiary of MBN, they've had one too many sour encounters with NTCD. Yongho has the nasty habit of never letting Seunggi, IDMK's main rapper and his once boyfriend, take a step without his consent now that they're reunited; Hyunbin's obsession on pursing Tomomi has tired her and every single one for her members beyond cooling down; Josh's rising influence over the innerworkings of the company reminds Hosung too much of his deceased and despised brother.
MBN'S GOLDEN AGE SENIORS (EXTENTH & SUNDATE) - Rivals: A misguided game of 'Senior Romance Speedrun' with the founding groups of MBN, EXTENTH and SUNDATE, has left the majority of the IDOLMAKER members heartbroken, embarrassed and more importantly, pissed off. Still, Julia ignores the years of historical battles between the two as she finds herself in the middle of an office affair with SUNDATE's golden girl, Park Suhyun - a desperate attempt to subside her intese feelings for her icon, Yoojin. Little does she knows, she's not the only IDMK member that she's secretly trailing along. Recently discharged from the military, Grace's never forgotten first love and ex-boyfriend, EXTENTH's Changmin, asks her once for her hand in marriage, as well as for Grace to retire from daunting Idol life with him.
[REDCATED] - ???: After [REDACTED], a private country club in center Seoul -- one that deems itself as a 'place for connection between former child stars' -- gets a grip hold of Taehyeon, suspicion of their members real intensions, motivations and face of leadership rises in Eunyoung and Yuzuriha. A spiralling Hosung takes dangerous inspiration in [REDACTED]'s 'detachment' and 'healing' methods, to Dabin and Jeonghun's utter horror.

whats ur fav anime . atm
OHHH hard to choose. Ive been rewatching Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War (and watching s3 for the first time) lately and its def one of my faves. It's a comedy but it has a kot of serious parts fit into it really well (Sometimes in comedies rhe serious bits are totally ruined bt sticking a joke in the middle, or theyre just inserted into it reslly weirdly- I think love is war does it really well tho)
OH !!! Mononoke is also rlly good its probably my all time fav in its genre (Like I wouldnt pit a comedy against mononoke bcs you gotta judge them on different things yk?). Its also the onky dubbed anime that I watch the sub with. The dub aint bad but I thi jnk the sub is just rlly good.
In generalllll I'd say The Disasterous Life of Saiki K bcs its so rewatchable imo (I'm the worlds #1 rewatfher ever).
OH JAPAN SINKS 202O THATS ONW OF MY FAVES 100% i'm Science Saru's #1 dickrider but I really enjoy it in general for a lot of reasons. Bcs its SciSaru the animation has a really unique feel- When you get to watching so many anime you can lose interest in an otherwise good one if it has the standard, boring style every time yk? SciSaru tho has a lot of influence from western animation as well as eastern- The chief of animation is actually Spanish and worked in Ireland and France before going to Japan for SciSaru !! France is actually where one of the founders met Góngora (chief animator) and when he started his own abimation studio w/ Eunyoung Choi (other founder) he invited Góngora to join. Sorry I rlly like taljing abt SciSaru.
Anyway the studios animation is of itself is a amazing. I lije to describe it often as a more western feel with the actual animation, but a very Anime-y framing and bloxking if that makes sense? I could go on abt this for hours. anyway
As I said Japan Sinks 2020 is super good, so's a lot of SciSaru's other stuff. Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken is also an AMAZING one done by them. iirc it was the first of their anime that I watched.
Sarazanmai and Stars Align are also great ones !! Yk how when you finish one rlly good media you immediately want The Exact Same Thing but Slightly Different? I like to rec those rwo together bcs it feels like that sorta vibe. Weathering With You also ig. If you were to watxh both of them I'd say go for Stars Align first tho, or else the wildness of Sarazanmai might make Stars Align seen like a bit of a letdown. idk
If I had to go for movies I'm always a sucker for Makoto Shinkai ones, and if you like his stuff then Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop might be down your alley too. I've been watching the Satoshi Kon fest and Tokyo Godfathers is AMAZING as well. Pretty different from the ones I just mentioned tho
Last years fall season releases had some gems too!! Hells Paradise, My Home Hero, and Heavenly Delusion were amazing. I havent finished those last two yet tho haha
Kotaro Lives Alone also came out last year I think? or maybe 2020-2022 idrr. Its a luttle sad but its rlly good. So sad that theres no more ToT
