#eteri expiration date

This is not a new thought on my physical disability situation.
But my body being like this right now is because of my heavy training in childhood.
This is going to be a long one so, more under the cut.
CW: for brief mentions of anorexia and the Eteri expiration date
I will start by explaining a couple of examples of this with the team Tutberidze.
The team Tutberidze is managerd by Eteri Tutberidze and is mostly known for her olimpic winners, all being trained through their early teen years until they're able to finally get to the olímpics.
Issue is, the way she trains them, notably to do quads, is via starving them (they're not allowed to drink any water or eat anything on competition days as Alina has mentioned before), the main way you can do quads is if you weigh very little.
So she focuses on that, low body weight, and forgoes a lot of strength training that is not needed for that technique. Now, in the early teens everything is okay, issue comes at 16-17.
Yulia Lipnitwkaya, in 2014, was the first in this long line of hers. She did great in her individual olimpic category and went home with gold through the team event.
When she went back to Russia her body started crumbling down, all her skills slowly diminished, her technique became poorer and failed most jumps.
At 19 she retired from competitive skating.
Then there's Evgenia Medvedveva, she went undefeated for two years after junior categories had been fully won. She then went to the olimpics.
She was 17-18 when she went to the olímpics with her teammate Alina Zagitova (being 15 and much less injured). Six months before the olimpics Evgenia fractured her foot, which she still skated on during europeans being beaten by her teammate Alina.
She went to the olímpics still, both skated great, Alina won by 1.31 points and for the first time Evgenia cried in a competition. After 11 years of training under Eteri she went to another team in Canada.
Alina slowly lost her skills at 16 and by 17 announced she was going to take a pause in competitive figure skating. At 19 she left competitive and was hospitalized for three months to battle her anorexia.
Eteri has never been able to train boys into the Olympics (in single category) as far as i know, this plus how all this athletes slowly crumbled down physically after a certain age has created the term "the Eteri Expiration Date" which is 17 years old.
My specific case was similar, artistic/sincronised swimming, competitive training that favored girls of 11-15 and while we trained our strength and all, it was favored to be on that skinny side, not fit, low body weight focus.
My chronic pain started at 15 with my articulations then moved to my back with the scoliosis at 16. By 17 I stopped going to training for personal reasons.
At 18-19 I was also battling with anorexia and semi successfully got out of it on my own, to this day I still have to battle with that way of thinking.
I recently had the chance to talk with one of my old teammates, she basically told me our trainer ignored questions about me when they asked why I wasn't there anymore.
Most importantly, I asked her about the physical side, if she remembered it being LIKE THAT, now, she doesn't have any physical disabilities, but she did leave at 15 a year later (she was younger than me) and did agree that the training was brutal, bruises were common nearly every week, and that our trainer was probably thinking Olympics when training us. Plus, she also went through ED issues.
I'm not sure if this is a few isolated cases or this is a genuine phenomenon at this point, I always second guess myself, so.
If you have had this experience, know someone, have any more info on this, etc. Please comment it.
I won't make a paper or anything but putting a name to it, or maybe there already is one, would help.
If nothing comes of this at least I put it out there, this is half a vent half that reaching out thing honestly.

is valieva actually terrible at skating? i'm a fake figure skating fan and only really pay attention during olympics seasons... i remember the doping scandal and her disappointing free skate but that's all i know...
ok i'm not some kind of Technical Expert and this is a question much better suited for @tofumilanesa than me (sorry for the tag!) but... yeah. and it's on purpose too
before we talk about Skating though we have to talk about Silly Little ISU Politics, which is always a dreadful chore and just a real slog. the ISU (international skating union)(figure skating governing/judging body) is the one that determines the rules for how fs is judged over the years. in essence there's 2 parts of a figure skater's score: the TES (technical score) and the PCS (program component score). the TES measures the value/quality of each individual element (jumps etc) and the PCS measures "skating skills, performance and composition, and transitions." see how little skating skills is part of that? less than half of half of the whole score.
if you've also noticed how little of this is objective, correct! shmoozing to the ISU can get you... generous judgments on your more borderline calls -- bad technique can get glossed over way more easily. especially by larger federations, and especially, in ladies' singles, by The big federation (Rusfed.)
All that to say is that the Russian girls are being judged. pretty kindly. So if you're coaching them, you don't really have to do things like "ensure they're good enough skaters not to get their asses torn to shreds by the PCS panel" and you can focus more on getting that fourth rotation out of that underfed teenager.
so all these girls (and it's not just Valieva -- Shcherbakova, Trusova, Kostornaya to some extent, and the newer generation of Petrosian and Usacheva and Tikhonova and the like, as well as the older girls like Medvedeva and Zagitova) come out of the same camp (all trained by Eteri Tutberidze, who you can immediately recognize at the edge of every rink by her bleach blond it's-gonna-be-may hair and sour expression) and they learn how to spin in the air and that's it. bad initial technique is not trained out of them, because dedicating the time to learning how to jump more safely (ex. EVERYONE has a flutz. except trusova but it's not like her tech is great either) is time you are taking away from getting that stable quad. this training is intensive enough that there's a phrase -- the "Eteri expiration date" where these girls retire at 17 sharp, from injury or anorexia or both.
(this is not necessarily an all-of-Russia problem -- Elizaveta Tuktamysheva is 25 and still going. That being said, no Russians who are competitive on the world stage besides her come out of anywhere except Eteri's camp, so it might as well be.)
anyway, back to skating technique and kamila: figure skating doesn't place nearly as much an emphasis on forward speed as hockey does, but it places a lot More emphasis on efficiency, depth of edges, and smoothness.
probably the best example of this is crossovers -- if you watch a program like, say, valieva's bolero (she skates it clean at GP Rostelecom), whenever she does crossovers, she's doing three or four and putting her whole back into it. You can watch her shoulders bob up and down as she's stroking -- meanwhile, watch bronze medalist Kaori Sakamoto go, and she needs barely two and all her power is coming from her legs.
actually, sakamoto vs valieva is a pretty easy comparison re skating skills: when sakamoto skates, she leans very hard into her inside or outside edges, while valieva doesn't really do that at all. sakamoto's crossovers are a lot more powerful, and she has a much easier and more fluid transition from forward to backwards skating. she's also a lot faster -- and i know we said there's less emphasis on that, but speed with little effort is a really good measure of technical ability, and valieva is basically crawling compared to sakamoto (for an even better example of effortless speed, go watch old yuna kim programs!)
but valieva is 6 years younger, didn't medal, and will have quads for the next year or two before she retires from hip or back injury, while kaori might even show up at the next olympic cycle, so who's to say who's winning that game

This might be an unpopular opinion but I need to say it, I had and have a lot of sympathy for the Eteri girls for the abuse they endured and still endure, and I have publicly supported Valieva, Shcherbakova, and Trusova during the chaos that was the Olympics women event. But at some point we need to start holding them accountable for their participation in that circus in the past few months.
Following the Olympics each one of them gained popularity and took their victory lap and all the money and opportunities they can ask for. They can cash out and capitalize and get out of it pretty scot free without anyone really questioning it. Yes they might want to continue their skating career but is it really worth it? We all know they have an expiration date in about a year at best.
Trusova had a huge meltdown on national TV and blamed her coaches for everything, but she has no problem playing along with the media and capitalizing on her success while still staying with Eteri. With Trusova to me it’s clear it’s all about opportunism of wanting to generate as much fame and opportunities as possible and it seems like there’s no love lost between her and Eteri and Co., but she seems a little to comfortable to participate in Eteri’s circus. The rest of Eteri girls keep getting injured without anyone caring.
But it’s Valieva I’m mostly done with. She’s a victim of the Beijing mess, but she’s also victimizing others with her participation in whatever the coaches tell her to do. Her new FS is outrageous and offensive and while some are talking about them making her relive the trauma, I still judge her for going along with it. It’s another part of the gaslighting she and her team are doing since she got caught doping, she’s always the victim of the big bad western media and western world who just wants to harm the poor little Russian skater.
There’s no accountability from any of them for what they are part of, there’s no remorse for being part of ruining the Beijing ladies event for all the women who participated and for the teams in the team event who never go to experience a team medal ceremony.
That FS and that ending pose are truly unforgivable. It’s mostly on Eteri and Co. but at least some accountability belongs to Valieva (and Trusova, and the rest) for her part in all of that as well.

You cannot compare Medvedeva's silver-medal winning piece of art in 2018 with Trusova's 'jump drill' today. There was no effort whatsoever put into the performance, skating skills or artistry. And with the recent doping scandal, we can only guess what they gave Trusova to get her to land those five quads.

Apparently Anna doesn't want to retire soon and that makes me happy because :
1. I want an eteri girl (or a former one) who will manage to break the Eteri expiration date and Anna and Sasha might do it.
2. I want her to try some new music styles. A flamenco, a happy jazz, a sweet/ happy pop music. She does well on sad/dramatic classical music, but she needs to try some new styles.
I'm just a bit sad that she probably won't leave Eteri. I would love her to improve her jumping technic, and have an new choregraph, better than Gleikh.

naw idc what y’all will say anna shcherbakova seems like the sweetest person, and she deserves that medal more than the other eteri girls. she has actual musicality and it genuinely feels like she hears and feels the music. not only that, but her programs are artistic (even tho that fucking devil man choreographed it.). and although she pre-rotates and cheats her quads, i often think they’re more consistent than trusova’s. i’m not actually trying to be all “anna against the world” either tho. she’s a beautiful skater who has prevailed despite the heart-wrenching systems of abuse she’s subjected to, and i’m extremely proud of her! also i think it’s worth noting bc ppl forget this, but anna has been training with eteri since 2013, so she’s that last one from the yulia era. i wish her all the best as well, and even though she probably won’t have another season *cough the eteri expiration date*, i would love to see her mature as a skater.

i really, sincerely hope that the eteri camp wil crumble in on itself along with rusfed and isu. Do i actually think something will happen? No, not unless something really really bad happens even by their standarts.
Reading Evgenia’s interview, seeing that she has severe back/spine injuries at the age 22 that she cant turn a certain way, cant do half the jumps...
These girls are trained under eteri from childhood and trusted her to know better only to end up with eating disorders and severe physical injuries, cant even imagine the mental side of it.
the “eteri expiration date” started for a reason and it feels like as the years go on the injuries the girls get get worse too.
Evgenia is only 22 with the back/spine injuriy that will last for the rest of her life
Daria is FIFTEEN with a hip injury.
Yulia retired aged 19 from hip and leg ligament complications, along with anorexia.
At this point the only reason people arent calling them out is because the quads have become a circus attraction, its “good for the sport”. Come see how many quads this teen girl can land, dont ask how many times she fell practicing, act shocked when she gets injured
Im just begging for anyone to say something before we have yet another batch of incredibly talented skaters drop like flies from terrible injuries

She [Surya Bonaly] also knows all too well the toll that quads can take on the body as it ages, and had to eventually stop performing the skill after having hip surgery at 25. “It’s good to win medals, but you don’t want to be traumatized for the rest of your life.” Bonaly said.
The Eteri Expiration Date: Kamila Valieva and Russia's quest for figure skating gold — Business Insider

Just heard about the results from the female ice-skating event and God, what a shit show. And there is the unspoken truth that we all know Kamila Valieva just lost her one chance at Olympic gold because even though she’s 15 her Olympic career is over, given the expiration date on Eteri girls. An athlete trained by any other coach would have solid chances at Olympic gold at 19. She’s not gonna be around in 4 years.

I would really like for her to skate. None of this mess is her fault. She's just an innocent and abused child. And her samples at the Olympic stage have been clean. I would like for her to skate and jail Eteri and co. Besides, she might not have another chance at the Olympics. She will never be able to run from the scandal. They have made her the sacrificial lamb.
However, after everything that has happen I don't know if skating or not skating would be more damaging. We don't know and will probably never do.
There is no simple nor easy answer for what's best for Kamila and her Olympic dream. And I'm not to speed on what the rules said about a case of a drug minor. Maybe there is legal way for her to skate which I don't know. Maybe there isn't. COS will decide and nobody will be happy nor satisface.
But the sport needs change and it has never been more clear. Maybe something good would come out of this mess. Poor Kamila. No matter the choice, I hope one day she would be able to find peace.
She is an innocent child abused and betrayed by the adults in her life. Like you, I hope the adults will face consequences much more severe than she ever will.
But to say that her current samples are clean is worthless - all athletes are clean until they are caught. They know how to do it, they use it during the off-season to help with recovery and assist them to train harder, they use smaller doses so they will be out of the system faster. There are many methods. There is absolutely no way in hell that this was a one-time thing, nothing will convince me of that, we've seen too much from that school to be naive enough to believe this is somehow a contaminated sample or this was a one-time thing unrelated to the school.
I think Vaieva's Olympic dream died the day that sample came back positive. If she will compete she will be under immense pressure and all eyes in the world will be on her, and she'll either rise to the occasion or crush hard. If she is allowed to compete, and worse if she'll win, it will be forever tainted, it will forever be the medal that went to the athlete who was found doping yet got away with it on a technicality. It will be a worthless victory anywhere that isn't Russia (she will be celebrated there) and the media will rip them apart. If she won't compete I think her Olympic career will likely be over since the expiration date of Eteri skater gives her two more seasons, three max, and that without taking into consideration the psychological damage she's enduring right now.
As for Kamila, the thing with Russia is that she will be a hero there, either way, it's fucked up but she will be viewed as a victim of WADA, not of her coaching staff and it will be another "proof" for them about how others just want to take down the innocent Russian phenomena, it already started.

They abused her, drugged her, humiliated her, broke her spirit and her bones before kicking her out because she was no longer useful to them and spoke her mind one too many times.
Tumblr media
She is one of the most talented and beautiful skaters to ever grace the ice with her presence. Her triple axel was magnificent, her combos were massive and her stage presence was out of this world. I hope whether she decides to retire or continue competing with her new coaching team, that she will be happy and look after her health above everything else!
I also hope that Eteri hasn't blacklisted her to the point of losing income with sponsors and skating shows and she can continue to perform for all of her fans whether that be in a competition or under a spotlight.
Perhaps one day she will be able to reveal all of the mistreatment and abuse that really happens behind closed doors at Sambo 70.

Do you think Eteri will wash her hands of Kamila now like she did with Zhenya and Alina? My heart breaks for Kami, she didnt deserve this.
Ugh, God, I hope not, at least in the sense of Eteri straight up abandoning her/turning on her. I would not put it past her, though. I want Kamila to get as far away from Eteri as possible, but imo it could potentially be just as emotionally damaging for Eteri to suddenly cut ties with her as it is for her to stay.
I wonder how Eteri is going to handle all the controversy, first and foremost, though. Will she keep quiet and try to let it blow over? Or will she take to social media and blame/criticize Kamila, as she’s done to other students before?
I personally think how she responds to all of this attention in the next few days (maybe even weeks) will have an impact on whether or not she drops Kamila.
If Eteri keeps her mouth shut and the buzz dies down, maybe she will still train Kami. I mean, Kamila is not quite at the Eteri expiration date yet. She is a fantastic skater and a lot of time, money, and energy has been invested in her by both Eteri and Russia.
If Kami does stay, though, she will probably have to train in silence. No performances or interviews for a while. Maybe if this all becomes a thing of the past, she could perform in the future without many people remembering the controversy.
Sadly though, because of the widespread coverage of the doping scandal, her reputation is already falling apart at the age of 15, and I doubt people will forget this dreadful Olympic event anytime soon. If the negative media attention stays on Eteri and Kami for a long time, I doubt Eteri would want to send Kami out to perform again under her name. Any future performance from Kami would be scarred by this scandal.
In this case, I’d imagine Eteri would want to present a new, non-controversial student to be the new golden child.
Whether or not Kami gets dropped very soon might also depend on if Eteri already has a new skater close to Kami’s level that she can quickly replace her with.
In addition, if Eteri’s goal is to have a gold-winning skater for the next Olympics, she might just drop Kamila anyway to focus more on the younger, rising skaters. Kamila will probably be too old by Eteri’s standards by the time the next Olympics comes around.
While I really, really, want Kamila to be free from Eteri, if she leaves or gets dropped right now, she risks the chance of Eteri slandering her online. It’s truly an awful position for Kamila, as well as the rest of the Eteri girls, to be in. Whatever happens, I hope someone rises up to stand up for them, guide them, and treat them with kindness. They deserve to be treated so much better.
