it’s the way mulder calling her scully was actually a sign of respect. other agents who respect her, call her agent scully, sometimes dr. scully depending on the setting, and sometimes scully. the people who don’t actually respect her (disregarding season 8&9 where they suddenly start using first names for no reason) call her dana. it’s so obvious too. because it’s what they would do for any male agent. it always drives me bonkers and i live for when she corrects them. it’s scully.

but anyway. i LOVE it. scully had to earn mulder’s trust, but she always had his respect. it’s ove of things about mulder i truly love. he’s more trusting than he tries to let on. so really, it’s kind of just a show. but he did have reasons not to trust her. he fully knew why she was assigned to the x files. but truly — what was he going to do once he met her? respect was instant. before meeting her even, when he read her thesis (or whatever it was lol). the trust did take some time, but it starts immediately.

at the beginning, they shared very little personal information unless it was relevant or during some vulnerable moments. i think the reason for some of those boundaries is professionalism & a healthy distance. but the longer they’re partners, the more they go through together / see the other go through, as their mission becomes personal in ways they weren’t prepared for, the closer they get & as their bond grows (scully’s abduction, donnie pfaster, that pedophile, melissa, scully’s cancer, losing their parents, everything about samantha, and on & on) — they still hold up those barriers. calling each other mulder & scully is their thing. they like the person they are with & to each other. it helps protect their partnership.

*and* i think they both had past work relationships where they made the mistake of letting it get personal too fast. diana, jack?? (i’m bad at names lol) and neither of them wanted this partnership to follow that route. the distance was purposeful; to protect themselves and their partnership. before they even knew where this journey would take them. and maybe because they took those precautions yet didn’t shy away from each other — they were vulnerable with each other (starting in the pilot), they argued & debated constantly (about the work & their beliefs i mean), and they really got to know each other. slow & steady. in ways no other person knew them except each other. the way their minds worked, every weakness & insecurity they had. and every strength made stronger because of the other.

and it’s the way mulder only uses dana when it’s personal, not professional. when he’s trying to reach her as a friend, someone who cares about her, and not “just” her work partner. and scully does the same, though much more rarely especially after the first time she tried and he was a liar (tooms. he fucking lied 😂 and why? except to keep this fake distance & protect himself/her).

every step of their relationship was hard fought for and achingly intentional. and still, i don’t think they could have predicted their trajectory. way they became each other’s person in every way they possibly could.

mulder & scully. the two idiots trying to protect themselves and focus on the work and the way they ultimately failed in so many ways yet were more successful than they could have imagined.

anytime i’ve said “anything for you” “i’ll do anything for your satisfaction” “what matters is what you want” sure believe it’s all just fun and games, it’s all for the k;nks, but i would literally do the most volatile shit imaginable if it made you happy. i’d go back to s’elf mut;lat;on if you wanted to see your name carved in my thighs sir. it’s what you want that truly matters, i’m here to serve you, not myself
