SotWK OC Spotlight: Prince Turhir Thranduilion
Born in Third Age 37, the second son and child of Elvenking Thranduil and Elvenqueen Maereth.
His name means “Victorious Master” in Sindarin.
Towering at 7 feet, 6 inches, he is not only the tallest member of Thranduil’s family, but he is the tallest of all elves born in the Woodland Realm, in all of its history. (For reference, Thranduil is 7 feet, 3 inches, and the other Thranduilions are all less than 7 feet.)
As a child, Turhir had difficulty making friends with elflings close to his age. Since he was always much bigger and physically stronger, even from infancy, it was hard for him to play normally with them. His size and his more somber nature also made his childhood peers uncomfortable around him--and it was difficult enough to relate to a prince!
As a result, Turhir was rather lonely in childhood and spent most of his time with his mother, his older brother Mirion, and his tutors.
Otherwise, he spent his alone time reading and thus grew up into an avid reader. He especially enjoys narrative poems, and became an eloquent writer and poet himself.
He is a skilled carpenter and builder who helps construct community buildings in his spare time.
He is a member of the very exclusive guild of Greenwood woodcutters--laborers who fell trees, which is a highly restricted and regulated practice.
Turhir is a horsemaster and was the primary trainer of the arroch breed that existed only in Greenwood (discussed in this post). He had a close relationship with the ancient ancestors of the Rohirrim who once dwelt near Greenwood.

But the talent Turhir is most famous for, by far, is his battle prowess, which is discussed in this post. Thranduil noticed his son’s martial abilities very early on and persuaded the reluctant Elvenqueen to let their son begin training with Master Trainer Ivenil before he had properly come of age.
Turhir carries the official title of the King’s Champion, and would be called on to fight for the crown and kingdom if single combat is required.
Although Turhir loves tournaments, especially jousting, his size and skill give him too large an advantage over his opponents. It has been deemed hazardous for him to participate in these types of competitions, so he is usually left only to spectate.
Occasionally, he is able to publicly demonstrate his skills by competing against his own father and brothers in special events limited within the royal family.
His Royal Highness Turhir’s regency in north-western Greenwood (the province he governs) is seated in Thangail (“shield-fence” in Sindarin), one of the realm’s most recently established cities, built to house the largest military base in the kingdom.
Turhir is the closest in personality with his father, but Thranduil tends to be hardest on him compared to his other sons. Turhir is thus closer to his mother and is the most protective of her.
Turhir considers Mirion and Arvellas his closest friends in the world, and witnessing both their deaths nearly drove him to insanity.
Although he is very noble and good-hearted, Turhir is the most prone to being corrupted by Darkness in his family, and Sauron himself grew aware and took interest in this.

Much thanks again to @cheryl-of-kangsu for making this request!
So far, Turhir has drawn the least amount of interest among the Thranduilion Princes, which is not necessarily surprising to me, since that's how it would probably be in "real Middle-earth life". You might not like him at first glance, but once you get beneath the layers, there's a lot to admire there. He's an excellent hero for the "enemies to lovers" trope, and is a terrific Mr. Darcy archetype.
Also, I don't write and don't plan to write smut for the Thranduilions, but if there was ever a great leading man for that sort of thing among Thranduil's sons, Turhir would be my endorsed candidate. Just a creator's opinion. ;)

Tolkien’s Legendarium Ladies - (3/∞): The Elvenqueen of the Woodland Realm
The Elvenqueen is the wife of the Elvenking Thranduil, and mother to Legolas. She is the Queen of the Woodland Realm. The Elvenqueen is never mentioned by Tolkien in the books, but because of Legolas existence, she must have been part of the world nonetheless.
She is mentioned and briefly touched upon in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies” where Thranduil had commissioned the dwarves to make the White Gems of Lasgalen in a necklace for her, but she never got to wear it. The Queen of Mirkwood was captured and tortured at Mount Gundabad by Orcs. Legolas mentions that there is no grave for him to visit and his father rarely talks about her, but Thranduil eventually points out that his mother loved him more than anything, even life itself.

The last gleam of fading summer. I made the chiton dress from the leftovers of another project. Who remembers the blue fabric I tried to bleach this summer? Well, this is the result and I love the new colour so much! Due to me using different brands of bleach it did not came out even, resulting in a subtle but lovely gradient. while usually all my jewelry ist silver, I found the gold stampings to be a lovely accent on the soft rose colour. I am still doing the hems, which takes time because being me I do them by hand, but I took the opportunity to take some pictures with the belt (that will soon go to the etsy shop) while it still has warmer days. This photo has two pieces that I inherited from familiy members: my Grandmother's Amber necklace that I wear in my hair and the gothic harp from my great aunt and harp teacher. I miss both these grand old ladies a lot, and I am glad to have these little mememtos in my life. Title: Mere Sight Make Obedient By: Elvenqueens / @translesbianlanwangji Gift for: @flossibelle Rating: Teen + Word Count: 5478 words Warning(s): Angst, Child Death, Non-Graphic Violence, Emotional/Psychological Abuse, Uther Pendragon's A+ parenting, Hurt Merlin, Whipping Boy AU, Mutual Pining, Pre-Relationship, Hopeful Ending
Summary:
A chance encounter.
A promise broken.
Arthur was the obedient child. He was the one who stayed in line. the one who would inherit the throne. Morgana was the one who spoke out, who questioned his decisions, who went behind his back and damn the consequences.
Uther had started to lose his grip on his son. Morgana may have influenced him more than he thought, or perhaps Arthur had been going behind his back this entire time. One to draw the attention and one he would never suspect.
He was losing control of his son, and for a King and his Heir to be at odds is a dangerous thing.
Or, I write a whipping boy au cause its a royal drama so why not

I just read "A stab to the heart", and first of all, I loved it, just... perfect! The way the Thranduil is so worried for her and he can sense when she wakes up is just way too good for me!
Honestly, the last line of the fic: "We saw ada frightened" just hit me so deep that I had to come here. So, I didn't check to see if you have already written about this in the headcannons masterlist (and I'm sorry if you did and I haven't noticed!) but how do you think that Thranduil and their kids reacted when she died? Like, how their feelings and thoughts after this? I've always assumed Thranduil being an extremely good father, so I can't truly imagine him being mean to any of their kids, but how do you think that they (specially Thranduil) took the news that their queen had died?
Eeek! What lovely feedback and an even lovelier fic-related question! (I am so lucky and grateful to get such nice Anons in my inbox; I am spoiled.)
A Stab to the Heart (Fic Link)
Part 2 of this 2-part fic is over 50% written, but has been stalled in the basement of my brain for over six months now (yikes)! Hopefully I can shove it back into motion soon!
In regards to Thranduil being so in-tune with his wife that their minds are practically in a constant state of ósanwë (Elvish mind-link), I would like to point out a few key details about their relationship:
"A Stab to the Heart" takes place in Third Age 1012. By this time, Thranduil and Maereth have already been married for 1,188 years and have been mutually in love for an additional 1,700. And ever since they married, they were hardly ever parted for any significant amount of time (as opposed to most other Elven couples, like Celeborn and Galadriel, who would live apart for years). Needless to say, you would be hard-pressed to find a couple more tightly, lovingly bonded then the Elvenking and Elvenqueen were to each other.
THEIR ROMANTIC HISTORY: (Link to related HCs HERE) It took Thranduil about 50 years of sporadic meetings to realize he was falling in love with Maereth. However, he knew his father would loathe the idea of his son pairing off with a Noldor (much less one descended from Fëanor) and it would have great repercussions on their kingdom, so Thranduil tried to ignore his growing feelings and sought to maintain just a friendship with her.
Maereth nearly died in the Sacking of Eregion, and Thranduil had been there to witness it; he had held her while she was gravely injured and felt the terror of her slipping away from him. Ultimately, she was saved by the healing of Elrond, but this experience left a permanent mark on Thranduil. From that day on, he found the only thing that ever scared him in his life: losing Maereth to the Halls of Mandos.
What do you do when you realize you love someone so much you cannot live without them? You ask them to marry you, of course! And so Thranduil did, but it took another thousand years of determined courtship to get Maereth to say "yes".

The Aftermath of the Elvenqueen's Death
I have yet to fully write the story of this terrible tragedy (I'm intimidated by it, to be honest), but a version of it was written, including the immediate aftermath, in my Thorin-centric fic, "The Broken Shield", where Maereth died during the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. I wrote out more details of her death in this headcanon post.
As for the reactions of the family (those who were left, anyway)?
OH BOY.
(SPOILERS to the SotWK AU, if anyone cares about that sort of thing, under the cut. Also, it gets pretty sad, so I apologize for the emotions this story may cause.)
Thranduil very nearly died from heartbreak. This was the darkest point in Mirkwood's history, the kingdom that had already been fighting off spiders, orcs, dark creatures, and poisons for centuries. All that was nothing compared to the realm's grief over their Elvenqueen's death, and fearing the likelihood their beloved Elvenking would either die from heartbreak, or finally leave them for the Undying Lands.
Note that by the time the Elvenqueen died, Thranduil had already lost three out of five of his sons. Only Gelir and Legolas remained, though he also had his daughter-in-law, Itarildë (Mirion's widow) and two grandchildren, Crown Prince Aranion (heir to the throne) and Princess Anariel.
Upon his return home to Mirkwood to bury the Elvenqueen's body, Thranduil was uncharacteristically cold and seemingly emotionless. He turned into stone (metaphorically) as a way of holding himself together, for the sake of the people who depended on him. He did not have strength left to properly comfort his family, and could only parrot the kingdom's motto, telling them they "will endure".
Gelir, the most impulsive of the Thranduilions (and second to Turhir as the most hot-tempered), lashed out in vengeful rage. Legolas just barely convinced him not to immediately ride out to seek revenge against the Orcs.
However, about three years after the Elvenqueen was laid to rest, Gelir once again tried to convince his father to allow him and Legolas to lead their armies to rejoin the Dwarves (Thrain's people) in their war against the orcs. Thranduil refused, and instead decreed that all travel to other realms was forbidden while the Dwarves fought their war.
Frustrated by this (and still grieving his mother), Gelir finally broke down and rebelled openly against the Elvenking. He attempted to leave Mirkwood on his own, only to be chased down by his father and dragged back to the Halls in chains, where he was thrown in prison.
Does this sound harsh? I take a pause in this dramatic tale to point out that Thranduil was a very, VERY good father to his sons all their lives. The Princes were over 2,000 years old by the time their mother died; not only were they adults, but they were wise enough to know that they were not exempt from their kingdom's laws, and should understand the grief their father carried from all these terrible losses. Not only did Thranduil need to demonstrate the strength of his authority, but he also refused to risk the death of another family member, even if it meant imprisoning his own child.
After the war ended in TA 2799, Gelir was finally released from prison, after being held there for 3 years. But instead of making peace with his father and submitting to the King's decrees, he openly criticized Mirkwood's isolationist policies, which had become even stricter after the Elvenqueen's death.
Legolas, caught between the two dearest people in the world to him, could not get them to reconcile their differences.
After another year of strife between father and son, Thranduil gave Gelir an ultimatum: reaffirm his fealty to the Elvenking and his laws, or be banished from the kingdom. Gelir, believing his home had become a "cage" that he refused to be locked in, chose banishment.
Gelir asked his brother to come with him, forcing Legolas to choose sides by staying with Thranduil. He remembered a prophetic plea his mother once made to him many years before her death: "above all, choose your father". His decision was also influenced by the special closeness he had with Thranduil.
Thus, Gelir left the kingdom in the winter of TA 2800, and cut off all contact with his family. Legolas was the only Thranduilion left.
For a century (TA 2800-2900), Thranduil struggled against his personal demons of anger and grief and longing to be with his beloved wife again. In spite of his depression however, he continued to govern his people effectively, but only with the help and loyalty of Legolas and his devoted daughter-in-law and grandchildren. (Note: SotWK AU does NOT accept the coldness and rift between Legolas and Thranduil as shown in the film adaptation. Legolas ultimately proves to be Thranduil's most steadfast son. The conflict between Tauriel and Thranduil, and her romance with Legolas, do not occur in SotWK either.)
Tumblr media
In TA 2850, when Gandalf uncovered Sauron's identity as the Necromancer--something Thranduil had suspected for centuries, but his reports went unheeded--the Elvenking slowly began to return to himself, remembering the hard battle that still needed to be fought to protect his kingdom.
In TA 2911, Thranduil even began to loosen the restrictions against traveling outside of Mirkwood, when he allowed Itarildë and Anariel to join Gandalf in giving aid to the Hobbits of the Shire during the Fell Winter, just as their family had done previously during the Long Winter (TA 2758).
By the time Thorin and his Company arrived at Mirkwood in TA 2941, the remnants of the royal house of Thranduil were back in fighting form, although the Elvenking would always carry a longing for his wife that would not be healed until their reunion in Aman over a century into the Fourth Age.

Requested Pouches, part two. I have never shown these two, since they were promised before they were done. The first one was the prototype of a design that features heavily in the next batch, its inspired by art nouveau interpreations of grasses. The second one is a rare example of a custom pouch, made for a dear friend of mine. It features her Larp group's crest, which they based on the crests drawn by Tolkien. The latest batch of pouches is available in my etsy store, link in bio! #fantasyaccessories #tolkienite #elvenclothing #costumestore #costumeaccessories #mirkwoodelves #elvenqueen #larpgear #larpcostume #tolkiencosplay #elvenforest #tolkiencosplay #elben #elven #noldor #ladyknight #knightcore #fantasystyle #beltpouch #renfaire #medievalfantasy #gewandung #woodelf #leatherpouch #medievalfantasy #larper #medievalstyle #lotrcosplay #leatherhandmade witchstyle #witchvibes (at Middle Earth) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cjf4fmlNFsY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What Do You Know Of Love? (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Warnings: grief, mention of heavy drinking
A/N: I’ve always been super curious as to what would happen had Thranduil gotten back the gems he had fashioned for his wife at the end of the movie. Here is my take on what might have occurred.
The morning sunlight came through the open drapes and flooded the dark corners of the large bed chamber in its warm embrace. He hated the way it mocked him. Every day, for thousands of years, the sun rose with the dawn and forced him to go on. Forced him to drag himself out of bed and hope that his many layers of fine robes and glamor would be enough to cover the ever present smoldering pain of the burn scars cascading down the left side of his body. But he’d have gladly traded having to live with his whole body being burned that day, for the physical pain of that would be a mere inconvenience compared to the utter devastation he faces in his soul now.
Every morning, that damn sun rises and forces him to adorn his crown, the very crown she had crafted for him. The legendary crown of the Elvenking, forged from the living trees of his once green forest. Said to bloom and change along with the seasons during the years of his rule. Even though darkness had twisted the trees into gnarled versions of their former selves without her magic present to protect them, his crown had somehow remained unmarred.
He was no king without his queen, so why would it keep on living? As far as he was concerned, his reign had ended the day he carried her lifeless body off that battlefield. But of course, every morning he would wake up, if he’d even managed to fall asleep in the first place, and put that arrogant, self-assured mask on his face as he takes the throne.
They think he can’t hear them. The whispers among guards and maids about his cowardice and callous outlook on the affairs outside his borders. When did they forget that he had been fighting battles longer than they had been alive? If he had truly not cared for his people, he would not put himself through this hell every single morning.
And then his son…
Thranduil groaned. From the outside looking in, the elvenking cut a sorry sight. Sprawled out on the cold floor of his room, surrounded by empty wine bottles. He had not bothered to use a glass. His gray robe was wrinkled, and his silver-blond hair was unkempt. Sitting up slowly, he rubbed the back of his hand across his bloodshot eyes. Using the edge of his desk to pull himself to his feet, Thranduil assessed his surroundings. He was relieved to find out that, even in last night’s drunken stupor, he had remembered to close her old sketchbook and neatly return it to its place on the shelf by the bed after flipping through it as was his ritual every evening. However, his stomach sank as his icy blue eyes landed on the intricate wooden box on the vanity.
Mithrandir’s halfling thief retrieved it while sifting through the rubble of Erebor after The Battle of the Five armies, and had it returned to him. At first, Thranduil was in disbelief that he finally, after decades of searching, held the gems in his hands. Finding those jewels, the last remaining glimpse of his starlight, was one of the only reasons he had to continue on after her tragic loss.
And now that they were here… his soul yearned for her all the more. For the first time in centuries, Thranduil felt a spark of love crackle across his long short circuited fae. Seeing the precious diamonds for the first time since attempting to purchase them from Thror had been too much for Thranduil. He was instantly flooded with sweet memories of his soulmate, the one whom the gems were fashioned for, and was startled by the explosion of uncontrollable emotion radiating from a place deep within his being where he thought void of all feeling.
Now, as he ran his fingertips over the smoothe, cool to the touch jewels, he finally found appreciation for the sun as he watched it glisten off the white gems. Their glow reminded him of her bright eyes every time she looked at him. He knew what he must do.
