In the wake of what's going on in the world, I see a lot of rhetoric that basically boils down to the idea that everyone has a responsibility to watch every bad thing that's going on in the world all the time. That awareness itself is a responsibility that everyone has always.
I'm not going to say that people do or don't have a responsibility to be aware of things, but I want to talk about how to take care of yourself and others while doing so.
For some context, I spent close to a year and a half reading about every terrorist attack in the world as part of my work on the Global Terrorism Database. It was 2015/2016, so this was the height of ISIS/Daesh, it was a major time for Boko Haram, and it was when there was a lot of political violence that we weren't sure how to classify in places like Yemen, Crimea, and Libya (stuff the GTD didn't know how to classify had all of is information recorded, and then it went into purgatory until someone above my paygrade decided what to do with it). What this means is that I was spending 10-20 hours a week reading about hundreds or thousands of attacks a month and, in my case, recording infomation about the type of attack and the type of weapon. Much of my life was reading terrible things.
Limit what you do in isolation. One of the worst changes for me during that time, mental health-wise (even though it was great for my commute) was when I went from working in-person to working remotely. With other people, there are ways to diffuse the pain. A burden shared is a burden halved and all that. That may mean talking about it, or joking about it, or finding some other way to engage with it that isn't just reading about the most horrible things in the world and then stewing in your own thoughts about them.
Find something to do that's totally unrelated. I highly recommend finding something to do with your hands, if you can (knitting, Lego, cooking, whatever), but regardless of what it is, you should have some time when you entirely switch away to something different. During a fair amount of my time with the GTD, I was also doing my undergrad thesis about terrorism on TV, so a huge amount of my life was about terrorism in some way. The only other thing I watched was Great British Bake Off, and I would just rewatch the episodes, over and over.
Be compassionate about how you share information and with whom. Use trigger warnings, and consider using consistent tagging on places like Tumblr so people can blacklist it if they need to. Also consider whether it's appropriate or necessary to share photos of bodies or other results of horrible violence. What is it accomplishing, to show that? Can that goal be accomplished other ways that don't require the equivalent of jumpscares of unexpected photos of dead or brutalized people? Are you just showing it because you think that everyone should have to see it? If you are showing it, are there ways to mitigate against harm it may do?
Do what you can to avoid an echo chamber. Sometimes, when everyone around you is upset or angry about the same thing, it just amplifies itself, and you all get angrier and more upset in perpetuity without accomplishing anything.
Work towards action. Watching terrible things happen for the sake of saying that you haven't looked away isn't as meaningful as taking action in some way. Write to your Congressperson. Donate. Do whatever is appropriate for the thing you want to stop. But penance via watching terrible things happen doesn't accomplish anything.
Recognize compassion fatigue and do what you can to mitigate it. If you spend long enough doing this, you start to lose context, and you start to become less able to have compassion about things. If you're reading about attacks with dozens or hundreds of deaths regularly, five can start to not seem like that many. If you're reading only about the worst suffering in the world, "lesser" suffering of those around you can start to seem unimportant and petty. Do what you can to mitigate that.
Be kind to yourself. You do nobody any good if you burn out. Look away, if you need to. Take a break. Do things so you can enjoy life, because otherwise you are just another person suffering in the world. Other people's pain isn't a hair shirt for you to wear.

2021 Harry Potter Fanfic Primer
im here to point fingers at the incredible authors that have enabled my new interest in HP content.  im still conflicted and upset about it, tbh, but for now we’re leaning into the curve.  we’re getting out our shovel and finding out just how deep we can make the hole we’re in.  hand in unlovable hand my beloved <3.  anyway, these fics are wonderful, their authors are wonderful, and you should go read their stuff. if there’s a star next to it that means im losing my mind over it and always will be.
Creatively Maladjusted, by elumish on AO3, 101k  (they also have a wonderful writing advice blog on tumblr, @elumish, which I recommend following if you are a writer)
A very excellent re-telling of harry’s first year at hogwarts if he were sorted into Slytherin, plus some more not!fic or piecemeal re-tellings of his second and part of his third year.  Harry, in this, has a slightly different trauma response to growing up with the Dursley’s.  He’s a bit quieter, and the signs are a bit more obvious to the people around him, and I enjoyed that immensely.
Honestly, if you’re going to get sucked into something you have absolutely no business getting sucked into, elumish is the way to go, their fic is incredible. their teen wolf fic is also immaculate, if you’re so inclined.
Dissonance, by ImpishTubist on AO3, 2.5k (@impishtubist on tumblr)
Set during fifth year.  Oblivious!Harry has always been a delightful trope when well executed, and this is well executed.  Plus, some angst between Remus and Harry over what Umbridge has been doing to him.
I would certainly recommend a lot of ImpishTubist’s other hp work on AO3, like Lacuna.
blow us all away, by rexcorvidae on AO3, 23k (@rexcorvidae on tumblr)
In progress (like, updated last week in progress).  Currently in the beginning of Harry’s first year.  Fem!Harry, Indian!Harry.  Hagrid puts Harry in touch with Remus when she has questions about her parents, and they become reluctant, traumatized, angst-ridden pen pals who keep missing each other’s true intentions like ships in the night.  hot DAMN do I love this fic.  there’s hints of the way the dursley’s treat Harry peaking through in her letters, and I appreciated the attention to “hmm, her experience as a girl of indian descent in britain under the thumb of a bunch of white people who like being Normal may not have been gucci”
Definitely comb through the rest of their HP fic, too, I may or may not have gone feral over it.
Where the Heart is, by silver_fish on AO3, 15k (@kohakhearts on tumblr)
Woof.  This one said, “hey, harry was probably SUPER depressed in the summer after fifth year.  like, clinically.  maybe someone should do something about that.”  Fuck yeah.  Then this one said, “that someone was Snape.”  You all know my opinions on Snape; generally, Bad.  But damn if this fic didn’t wholly convince me by the end of it.  I thought it was a very realistic way for Snape to start seeing Harry as a person all on his own, and not a proxy for Snape’s angst over James and Lily, respectively.  The angst is wonderful, the ending is even more so.
*bernie sanders voice* I am once again asking you to read through the rest of the author’s HP fic.  a lot of them have similar themes; there’s actually a great one with Molly that i’m not reccing here, Wonder.
☆Bindings, Bindings, by Quietlemonhush on AO3, 60k (@quietlemonhush on tumblr)
WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS TO YOU HOW MUCH I ENJOYED/AM ENJOYING THIS.  If I had to pick a single fic and say “you, it’s your fault I’m stuck here,” it would be this one.  Anyway Lily in the afterlife is So Very Angry about how Petunia is treating Harry, and how Sirius is rotting in Azkaban, and how Remus is alone, that she literally brings herself back to life and drags James and Regulus with her.  All three of them are there to chew bubblegum and fix everything that went wrong after they died—and would you look at that, they’re all out of bubblegum!  There’s only Fury left.  That inciting premise is very crack, but every moment after that is very much not crack.  Lily and James love harry more than anything, the way a child should be loved; James and Sirius have the epic friendship of a lifetime; Sirius and Remus have staggering amounts of resolved sexual tension and take turns keeping each other in check; Regulus, though he realized that Voldemort and his family were shit before he died, is still unlearning all his racist bullshit and, also, years of trauma.  Actually, they’re all traumatized, but hey: now they have one another again and not a damn one of them seems inclined to let go anytime soon.  Quietlemonhush went, “hey, HP has a lot of Awful people in it, and a lot of Righteous people in it, and many of them are Very, Very Powerful; also, love is the most powerful force in the universe” and i said “hell yes tell me more right now.”  And then they did!
Quietlemonhush writes Sirius/Remus in a way that makes it sooo much fun to devour, so the rest of their HP fic is most certainly worth a look, if that’s your thing.
Rebuilding, by Colubrina on AO3, 113k (@colubrina on tumblr)
Hermione/Draco (*shrug emojis into the abyss* yeah, yeah, like none of us have ever been there before).  Takes place during Hogwarts 8th year, and while the beginning is, IMO, a little unfair to Ron, it gets much better.  Tells the story of Hermione and Draco clearing the air, learning to like each other, having some hormones over each other, and then falling in love.  Also tells the story of Hermione and Theo Nott becoming friends; the story of how every single 7th and 8th year student is fucked to hell by the war and the Carrows; the story of how they start an emotional support group about it and all become friends; and the story of, what the hell do you do with yourself after that kind of trauma?
I’ve been dipping in and out of Colubrina’s HP since before I was even on tumblr; I actually found them in those dark yesteryears when the only fandom interactions I had were on fanfiction.net.  Of such fame as Green Girl, which is an HP fic staple, and has also written a lot of wackier, crackier, and darker things than that.  If you don’t take yourself too seriously, I highly recommend many of their big HP works, though I imagine it’ll press some people’s buttons.  Colubrina’s work really does take up a corner of my mind whenever I’m in an HP mood, and will take up yours if you let it.
☆ all waiting is long, by shuofthewind on AO3, 149k ( @shu-of-the-wind on tumblr)
This is so well written that I can’t stop thinking about it.  It is occupying my mind when I lie awake at night, you know?  It’s one of those.  Hermione messes with something she probably shouldn’t have in Grimmauld Place, so when Sirius is sent through the Veil in the Department of Mysteries, she gets thrust into an alternate universe...in 1975.  Instead of handwaving it away, shuofthewind actually gets into the mechanics of it in a way that makes sense, to emphasize that hermione is never going home.  ever. The world she finds herself is shifted slightly to the left, quite a bit darker, but in a “the author is treating the idea of a society-wide conflict over blood purity much more seriously than JKR ever did” way, not a sensationalist way.  Now, Hermione has to grapple with all her grief at losing everyone she’s ever loved or known, the moral/ethical/magical implications of sharing what she knows about her future in an alternate world, and, you know, a goddamn war with people who want to murder her for being who she is.  This Hermione is smart, and she’s kind, and she’s powerful, and she’s making real friends.  If you hate JKR’s guts I’d go read this right now, because it delivers in all the ways she failed us.  It’s plotty, its got great world-building, and it pulls back the white curtain on the wizarding world to show you that, like real life, it’s multicultural and full of queer people...and the discrimination that comes with both.
shuofthewind write epics, mainly for the MCU, and I’ve read some of them a looooong time ago, so this fic kinda seemed out of left field for me but im SOOOO GLAD it exists.  If you want MCU fic you can sink your teeth into, go for it, but alas, they do not have any more HP fic (.......yet?)
Speak Now [+] Listen Now, by mrsfrizzle on AO3, 33k altogether
Harry reaches out to Remus for support because Umbridge is getting to him with her literal torture.  Remus, being a former professor, former mandatory reporter, person who loves Harry and has since he was born, and all around good man, tells Harry he has to tell someone, or Remus will.  It’s everything any adult looking back on that time in HP canon ever wanted, which is for an actual adult to say “what the fuck, those are literal chidlren” and then do something about it.  Then, a far more dangerous task: Harry trusts Remus enough to go to him about the Dursleys.  Harry and Remus’ relationship develops SO WELL, and there’s a bit of exploration about how Sirius may not exactly be guardian material, because he did in fact spend 12 years of his life getting tortured instead of growing up.  I think I’m actually going to go reread this right now, because it speaks to my id.
they do have some other HP fic which did not appeal to my hyperspecific wants, but may appeal to some of yours.  I think they’re also a published author, there should be a link on their profile page.
chase the stars, by Duskglass on AO3, 101k (@felix-duskglass on tumblr)
When Harry is five years old, a picture of him ends up in the Daily Prophet, and Sirius Black, Terror of Ministry Officials Touring Azkaban everywhere, gets a hold of that issue.  He then, in order: breaks out of Azkaban; crosses the countryside to Surrey; Finds Harry: Kidnaps Harry; Breaks Into Remus’ Apartment; starts processing (or maybe just acknowledging) his trauma from Azkaban, the war, and his childhood; and pines after Remus.  It’s a little plotty, and deals a lot (sometimes through flashbacks) with the specific awful things that happened to Sirius—largely because, after years in the constant presence of Dementors, those are nearly literally the only memories he has left.  It’s a wonder he’s got the strength to love Harry and Remus at all.  But then, maybe it isn’t.
This is a Very Serious Fic, but the rest of Duskglass’s HP work is actually just cracky enough to tickle your funny-bone, while still making you think “okay but why couldn’t we have done that in the first place.”
So!  That’s it for recs, for now.  These are all things I’ve found and read in the last month; if any of y’all are interested in my old HP recs, let me know and I can make a post for that, too.  While I’m still very conflicted about my choice of current fandom, I am not in ANY way conflicted about my taste in fic and authors.  Send these guys some love, read their fic if you’re so inclined, and leave some nice comments at the end of it.

Do you have any little tim fix recs? The best things is making me want baby Tim
Baby Tim coming up!!
Latchkey by goldkirk
This is awesome. Tim is the neighbor kid who runs a blog where he showcases his stalking abilities.  The Waynes end up getting super concerned for him, because he’s like, alone?? A+ joins-the-family fic.  (He’s 13, here, but I’m 28 and that’s baby to me)
Tso’ape Mumbichi by keeptogethernow
In this one, Tim is kidnapped at a young age by the court of owls, because his parents made a deal with them that Tim would be for them. Bruce notices the kidnapping and it becomes one of his projects to figure it out.  A couple years later, they find Tim. He’s not quite a talon, but he kind of is? The Waynes adopt him anyway.  :)  (he’s 10-12 here)
The Longer You Stay by emiv
This is set in the nolan-verse, after Bruce quits being Batman. He takes Selina with him and they travel Eurpoe, picking up stray children along the way.  They collect Tim last, from an orphanage where he ended up when his parents died.  He’s a cute little baby and his scenes toward the end of the fic are awesome, but the entire thing is worth the read.  (He’s 7)
Blood In the Water by MishaBerry
This fic covers a wide time range and is a bio-kid fic. Tim is little in the beginning, and his time spent with the Waynes is cute.  He does grow up, to 12 or 13, and becomes Robin in the usual route. He gets kidnapped by the League of Assassins (because Talia can’t have a bastard child ruining HER bastard child’s birth right. :) Damian must be first born, of course). Then it ends up being an awesome Tim & Jason & Damian escape/leave the league early fic.  (He’s baby-13)
to forbear to treat with attention or respect by elumish
This is a one-shot where Jason finds Tim sitting alone during a Gala.  It’s like the spark that causes Bruce to notice Tim (and the neglect), which would then eventually lead to Tim joining the family early.  (He’s little, don’t remember exact age)
The Gift by theLiterator
TW: child prostitution Read the tags. Tim’s dad hands him out as a.... favor. And does so for Bruce. Bruce reacts predictably, and decides Tim is his son now and Jack Drake can go drive off a cliff. (He’s 10)
Through the Walls (WIP) by Maychorian
TW: rape/non-con. Read the tags. This one is pretty heavy, because Tim and Jason get kidnapped by a freak who, ya know, does what freaks do when they kidnap children. Nightwing, and then Batman, rescue them and decide to adopt them and the sweet baby-Tim moments begin (mixed in with a LOT of angst)  (He’s 10)
Gifts From the Sea (WIP) by Raberba_Girl
Do you want something a little different?  This has baby Tim later on in the story, since it starts out with Dick, then moves on to Jason, then has Tim for a bit.  Right now she’s just finished up another Jason arc and is about to switch back to Tim for a chapter.  It’s different, though, because all the bat boys are seafolk? Not usually my cup of tea, but I love Raberba_Girl’s writing, so I tried the first chapter and was absolutely HOOKED. Could not put it down.  Highly recommend.  (I don’t know his exact age, but it’s little. Probably 10ish?)
And for those who haven’t seen it, my fic:
The Best Things (WIP) by me
The neglect happening next door is noticed by Alfred, and investigated by Bruce when Tim is 10.  Happens in a Baby-Damian AU, so Damian is already living with Bruce, and Jason is there, as well.  Baby-Cass (11 years old) will be joining the family this fic, as well.
Anyone else have any more? Feel free to reblog and add!

fic recs for the week
Tumblr media
so inspired by @captainkirkk (who’s awesome btw please check out her blog) i wanted to try starting a weekly fic recommendation thing. i'm calling it ‘fic rec friday’ cuz i’m a dork and i like alliteration.
also, i haven’t been keeping track of the fics i’ve read this week as well as i usually do because of family drama, so i figured i’d kick it off with some of my all-time favourites instead of what i’ve been reading specifically this week.
i have a lot to say about these, by the way, so i’m gonna put the recs under a read more
avatar: the last airbender
Cheating at Pai Sho by MuffinLance
"You said you were the Avatar!" "...I lied?" Aang doesn't get rescued from Zuko's ship, and no one's seen him go glowy yet... so he starts bluffing. Hard. Or: "The Avatar joins Zuko's quest to find the Avatar." In which Zuko doesn't join the Gaang, the Gaang joins Zuko.
honestly, i could put anything by muffin here. her works are incredible. but while most people got their introduction to her through the heart-wrenching Towards the Sun, i was introduced through this hilarious and light-hearted romp. it’s my go-to when i need cheering up (seriously, i’ve read it like three hundred times) because it’s so unapologetically fun without being literal crack.
(life happens) wherever you are by howlikeagod
On the day before Ba Sing Se falls, Katara decides two things: 1) not to stop for a cup of tea; 2) consequently, the fate of the world. Behind the walls, Zuko loses sleep, runs errands, contemplates treason, and drinks a lot of hot leaf juice—not necessarily in that order.
so, this fic bears mention because although it tends to slip my mind between updates, i’m always thrilled to see the e-mail. characterisation is spot-on, as well.
we’ll burn that bridge when we get to it by chaoticsandstorm
An AU where Ozai wasn't so forgiving of Azula lying about the Avatar being dead, and decides he doesn't want an heir he can't control. Zuko goes with her. OR: The AU where Azula gets a life-changing field trip.
i can’t even explain how much i love this fic. just go read it. a+ azula.
harry potter
blood will tell but often it tells too much and rather start a family than finish one by elumish
They don’t talk about what Percy did during the war. / He knows, knows deep in his soul, that if Potter ever wanted to take over Britain, he could do it, and most of them would probably just cheer along.
um... ow? these total less than 5k together and yet they make me tear up every time i read them?? featuring percy weasley being not-as-terrible-as-you-think and terrible self care. (p.s. read them in order.)
Hermione Granger’s Hogwarts Crammer for Delinquents on the Run by waspabi
'You're a wizard, Harry' is easier to hear from a half-giant when you're eleven, rather than from some kids on a tube platform when you're seventeen and late for work.
this hits like. literally every point i have for fiction ever. it’s funny, it’s heartfelt, it’s gay. it’s got revolutionary action. what more could you possibly ask for? featuring harry-that-never-got-his-letter, good-but-regretting-it-malfoy, and pretending to be muggles (badly).
The Bucket List by GallaPlacidia
Draco will die in six months if he can't get Harry Potter to fall in love with him. Since that's not going to happen, he might as well spend his last days working through his Bucket List. Tap-dancing lessons? Rock climbing? Poetry-writing? Threesomes? Cocaine? Getting to know his adorable cousin, Teddy Lupin? Draco will try them all!
okay, this is another one where i could put any of their fics, but this wasn’t the first i read from them. it is, however, the funniest. GallaPlacidia has an incredible talent for light-hearted morbidity, interwoven with heartbreak that catches you completely off-guard every single time. i adore their writing style and i’d recommend everything by them, starting with this.
Recipe for Disaster by AmaranthineAmusement
“What do you say? Are you in?”
A brief moment passed as Dudley looked down at the mug of tea- and then, smile widening, he looked up. “Yeah. Yeah, I am.”
A small hand met a large one, and Harry and Dudley shook hands for the second time. Harry felt the same swooping excitement he’d felt when he’d handed off the money to Fred and George for their joke shop. This might be a disaster, but it would most certainly be interesting.
“I hope you like Indian!” A clatter on the steps, and Hermione entered the kitchen. She frowned, looking between them. “Is there something going on?”
“Dudley’s moving in,” said Harry. “Did you get samosas?”
okay so. this fic means a slightly ridiculous amount to me. where muffin’s fics pushed me to write fanfiction again, this fic was the first that really hit me in the ‘wait fanfiction is actually really cool and doing this could be fun and exciting’ bit. i’ve recommended it to people irl. i got my mother to read it. it’s just. incredible. dudley dursley redemption fics are also top notch so like. consider it.
friends
Dead On Arrival by superangsty
You can't get a date, your friends all hate each other, and oh right - you've just been stuck with a roommate who's an even bigger mess than you. But hey, at least your outfits are cute.
okay hear me out. i have seen all of two episodes of friends, but i got the general gist. this fic right here? miles better than the show. you’ve probably seen that post that’s like ‘friends would have been good if it was gay’. this is that. this is the proof that they were correct. apparently it’s angsty, but i frequently read azula redemption fics so like. my compass is off and i just think it’s hilarious.

I was tagged by @strangerdarkerbetter :)
Gender – demigirl, entirely possibly autgender but not sure
Star Sign – Virgo
Height – 5′3″
Sexual Orientation – aroace, possibly panalterous? certainly open to qprs
Hogwarts House – Ravenclaw, but the hat wondered about Slytherin - it was a coin flip, but I just need to know so much
Favourite Color – Pink in general but fuchsia specifically
Favourite Animal – Cat and your general felinesque creatures
Average Hours of Sleep – average? probably 6-8, but that’s because I often sleep 3 hours at night and nap, or sleep too long, so the median is probably closer to 4-5 hours a night
Cat or Dog Person – Cat
Favorite Fictional Characters – So many. So many, some may accuse me of not listing favorites, merely interesting characters. Let’s do this by series. Harry Potter: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Newt Scamander. Supernatural: Dean Winchester, Castiel. Hannibal (TV only): Will Graham, Hannibal Lecter. The Flash: Barry Allen, Eobard Thawne|Harrison Wells, Harry Wells, HR, basically all of Tom Cavanagh’s characters on the Flash, Captain Cold, Hartley Rathaway. Game of Thrones: Arya Stark, Jaqen H’gar. Comics: Deathstroke the Terminator, Nightwing|Dick Grayson, Steve Rogers|Captain America. I don’t know. A lot of characters. A lot.
Favorite Singer/Band – Imagine Dragons, Ruelle, Lorde, Maroon 5
Dream Trip – It’d be lovely to go on that Europe trip with Hil, but honestly I’d settle for Vegas - that way I could spend it with @speedforcesensitive too - someday, Den, someday
Dream Job – I would love to be able to just create things at my leisure - to write and make jewelry and make fidgets. Honestly, I’d like to be my church’s secretary, which has a lot of freedom to do stuff like that and also has officey type things to do and I’d get to be helpful to anyone that needed it.
When was this blog made – Years ago, but I didn’t use it much until like... 2 years ago? When I really started getting into the Flash.
Number of Followers – 282 - I had to check, I honestly don’t look at that often
What made you decide to create this blog – There was a lot of content being posted and linked to on this page so I made a tumblr, but didn’t really get how to use the site, so I ignored it for maybe 2 or 3 years? Maybe longer.

As someone who still masks at the grocery store, on public transportation/in Ubers, etc. I think we are better served by acknowledging the fact that wearing a mask regularly is not a zero-cost decision. It's annoying, it can be really hot, it can make it harder to communicate, it can fog up your glasses/sunglasses, it can make you break out, if you wear it long enough it can make the back of your ears hurt. There are a lot of very real reasons why people don't want to wear a mask, especially for long stretches of time.
It's still the right thing to do, and people should continue to mask, especially indoors/in crowded spaces. But when we talk about masking as though we can't possibly imagine why anyone would ever not want to mask beyond misguided rugged American exceptionalism, we just sound out of touch and holier-than-thou.
Mask! It'll help protect you! It'll help protect your loved ones! It'll help protect the most vulnerable in society! But feel free to complain as much as you want while doing it.
