What should be an action-packed arc, while admittedly thrilling, still adheres to Magu-chan’s usual joke-heavy format, for good and bad. But the arc does introduce antagonists that I hope get more to do later on, fills in some backstory for Ren and Izuma–and surprisingly gives those two boys a much more interesting dynamic.

It’s been a month since I have had a chance to write about Magu-chan: God of Destruction at length. Like my earlier post, and as with my thoughts on the My Hero Academia manga and its Vigilantes spinoff, I wanted to wait until this arc wrapped up before judging the story as a whole.
Plus, there has been a lot of depression coming my way: losing my dad has required that I focus what time I have available to take care of important work and, as best as I have been able, create a space where I can process and mourn. To say that all of this has sucked is an understatement: 2021 is yet another year that can screw itself. So, getting back to writing about this manga is time to actually enjoy something amidst depressing circumstances.
Still, in retrospect, I probably could have included in this post the two earlier chapters of Magu-chan that introduced Izuma’s sister, seeing as she is a part of this arc, and you kind of need to know who she is for the emotional weight of this arc to work. But then that really good “filler” chapter would get in the way, and Seira’s interaction with Ren is recapped in Chapter 68, so readers likely can keep up.
So, since I’m looking at a lot of chapters this time, rather than review them one at a time, I decided to write about specific topics and how they work throughout one or more of this arc’s four chapters.
New Antagonists: The Ten Divine Generals
I hope future chapters will do more with the Ten Divine Generals–and I appreciate the subtle gag, that they call themselves the Ten when we see only five. And of course Ren, as the straight man, hangs a lampshade on it, too, upon meeting these weirdos–even fitting in a jab that makes it sound like the economy prevents the group from getting enough people to make up their team (try raising your wages).
Granted, another point of view suggests the Ten actually were ten before, and there is a story behind who they lost and how. If these characters stick around in the plot, I hope we get a bit of backstory and pathos, if just to keep up the theme of loss and mourning that are integral to this series. Who knows what role Magu and other eldritch gods like him had in depleting those numbers.
The Ten get the most attention in Chapter 68, as it begins with these five members conferring about how to handle Magu and Naputaaku–before we pull out to see they are dining at a mall’s restaurant before their conversation is interrupted by their order being up–which was oddly relatable, given how I still get surprised with those darn pagers that vibrate when your food order is ready. Their personalities, while broad, were pretty clear as soon as they were introduced: the brash one Jackal, the serious one Alhaut, the elderly man Urgot, and the refined woman Elisha. None of this is groundbreaking characterization, but as a comedic series, Magu-chan benefits from such character archetypes to defy expectations and create comedy by putting them into contrasting situations.
In other words, should Kamiki do more with the Ten, I could imagine the brash one stuck in a slow-paced fight that bores them, and the serious one stuck in ridiculous situations like Muscar has been. I think the jokes largely work, down to the mother telling her child not to stare at the Ten and bystanders mistaking the Ten for a sentai show.
The Real Antagonist, Uneras
That Uneras was again pulling the strings should have been obvious: she is the chief troll of this story. That being said, whereas other times I have found her role as the troll who instigates the plot and pulls the strings of the other characters, that twist felt earned in this chapter.
I should have seen it coming. There were plenty of hints, and it may have been obvious as soon as the Ten were talking about waiting for someone to give them a signal, Uneras’s previous interactions with Ninitey who just happens to start this arc meeting with the Ten to give them instructions, and the fact that her real form is still back at the Knights’ headquarters to empower their fight against Magu. It also was too easy, at the beginning of Chapter 69, for Gildabar to just accept Izuma was brought back by Ninitey and neither of them realizing Izuma brought Ren, Magu, and Naputaaku along. I know Gildabar says he expected this betrayal by Izuma, but it’s actually so much more complicated than that. The Ten had to have known Izuma’s plan, they could have stopped Izuma at any point–and they didn’t, because they wanted Izuma to bring Magu along, for this test of whether Izuma’s reports could be trusted, and whether Magu has really changed for the better.
Another hint was when Ren noted how Uneras seemed able to have plenty of time to write this farewell message with magazine-text cut-outs like a ransom note: if she had that much time to write this, then this was all planned ahead of time. I appreciate the same chapter that introduces this ransom note ends with Magu piecing together the clues and realizing, since Ninitey couldn’t have teleported Magu and others this far a distance without magical aid, of course Uneras powered up Ninitey to bring them here.
If I have to work to uncover a mystery, and have the clues make sense and lead to this conclusion, then it works for me: having the Ten show their hand by saying they now realize how much Uneras and Izuma’s reports were fabrications makes it too obvious that Uneras is up to something here. Then we see Uneras is fighting Izuma and Magu to prevent them from getting Ruru, so we think that was the twist, that she is the Big Bad all along–before that assumption is also undermined, showing this was all a test by Uneras. That works–it rewards me for sticking with this story. Plus, we finally give Uneras a small comeuppance, with Magu seeing the opportunity in front of him to destroy her real form once and for all–only to choose not to. His choice to spare her shows how much his character has developed–and keeps the “pet punishment sign” gag fresh.
But I am confused just who is “that man,” the first Holy Knight, that Uneras said Izuma reminds her of. If the Holy Knights in this story were formed 600 years ago, that would be in the 1400s, so not Arthurian, although definitely medieval. This isn’t my time period of study, but I’m blanking on any historical analogue this first Knight could be, or whether this knight will be a largely original creation for this story.
Ruru and Magu
I also feel ignorant for not picking up that, by the end of Chapter 68, the Ten were targeting Ruru: it was indicated early on in that chapter, as the Ten say their targets were Naputaku, Magu, and someone else–Ruru had to have been that “someone else.” It also should have been obvious to me when she is absent for so much of this chapter despite being the protagonist, or perhaps deuteragonist, of this manga.
The ending to the arc, revealing Ruru was just hanging out with Seira and unaware this was an intended kidnapping, does deflate some of what we got in this arc from the beginning. Granted, this is a comedic series, but after how well the forced-sleep arc added some serious weight to the story, and how well this arc was adding some action to the story, it does feel disappointing that more wasn’t done to make the stakes mean something at the end.
I appreciate that Ruru was never in any danger, hence disrupting any potential “damsel in distress” trope around her. But even as the joke ends up on the boys for misinterpreting all of this, it is still predicated on continuing a plot archetype that puts a girl into a position of the victim. After all, when Izuma has his awakening to protect Magu from Uneras’s attack, he refers to Magu’s work as that of “a noble knight who protects a young maiden’s peace,” so it’s hard to subvert the gendering when the story still has to actively invoke it for the setup of a joke’s payoff.
I did like the vague censorship of sorts the story uses: of course the worst torture Ren and Magu can imagine is the Ten tying up Ruru with a “pet shame” sign on her as she has done to the gods since Chapter 1, and boy, did the “pet shame” sign gag get a lot of play in this arc, without wearing out its welcome.
There are also small lingering doubts: why didn’t Ruru just answer her phone when Ren tried to call her? “Poor cell reception” and trying to get a signal across time zones and international borders are all sufficient excuses, if a bit too quotidian to take that simplest answer.
Magu’s remarks to Uneras during their battle did help clarify just what Ruru means to Magu, though: in his own way, even as the little despot he is, he still translates his concern for Ruru in dictatorial terms, all without going full tsundere on us.
Ren and Izuma: The Pairing I Didn’t Realize I Wanted
While I thought it was awkward writing Ruru out of Ren and Izuma’s story, I do appreciate the series removing her for a bit to have these two boys interact, and backing each other up to rescue Ruru.
Given how Ren and Izuma play off each other, I’m disappointed the story hasn’t tried to pair them up in a relationship. As much as I dislike falling into Girardian triangular desire–where you pair up the two suitors of the same gender instead of either of them with the original target of their affections–and as much as I do not want queerbaiting, I can’t say that these two don’t reinforce each other in different ways, Izuma’s respect for Ren for helping him to pass his classes, and Ren getting to feel competent. That Izuma actually apologizes to Ren for Seira helps to add something more to these two characters: Izuma is more self-aware than his chuunibyou tendencies imply, and Ren has someone actually give a damn about his hardships instead of reducing him to the “nice guy” punching bag. Having Ren then stand up for Izuma against the Ten and insist his mentee is doing his best helps sell all of this, whether this relationship is platonic or otherwise.
I also appreciate this arc letting Izuma do more than just be trapped in his own fantasy world. While it’s narrative shorthand to speed the plot along, having him be the first to realize the Ten were just a distraction while Seira kidnapped Ruru, it does show Izuma’s experience with the Knights makes him a valuable resource for predicting what his former colleagues would do, and it shows us more about what he would expect his sister to do.
We also get a bit more back story into why Ren first reached out to Ruru, in this case his desire to give her a happy life. I’m not convinced this is a positive approach, as Ren in the earliest chapters was a lot more abrasive to Ruru, and we’re again in that “nice guy” storyline. But I at least appreciate some backstory as to why exactly he has any concern for Ruru. And when Ren says it’s Magu, not himself, that Ruru needs, that does speak a lot to something deeper to his character. It’s some incredible character progression: Ren previously tried to get rid of Magu, thinking him a threat to Ruru, but by this point in the manga, he tells Magu that they all need to return home together safely, and that includes Magu.
And, LOL, Ruru just says “Good luck, Ren,” as that poor boy is about to get wrecked by one of the Ten.
The Visuals
The major visual highlight for this arc comes in its final chapter, with Ren and Izuma’s progressively more dumbfounded reactions to Uneras’s trick, which I’ll say more about later in the “Gags” section.
But I also appreciate the contrast in a panel in Chapter 68, where Ren is just demoralized over Ruru mistaking his encounter with Seira, while Naputaaku is so disinterested and continues sipping on his drink.
Naputaaku
And bless our MVP.
Chapter 70 of this arc featured the series’s first character popularity poll–and good on Naputaaku for winning. He remains such a delight of the series, down to being willing to help rescue Ruru just for whatever pocket change Ren has (and I appreciate Christine Dashell’s translation on Ren’s dialogue there in Chapter 69).
Still, Naputaaku has become so popular because he remains the punching bag of this arc. The poor starfish just wanted free samples at the mall and got fried by the Ten. At least Magu-chan maintains enough to the core personalities of the series’s characters, with Magu slapping Naputaaku to wake him up, something that is both a good visual gag in the midst of exposition, and a throwback to Magu’s earlier remark that he did indeed respect Naputaaku.
I also appreciated that Naputaaku’s first reaction to the Holy Knights headquarters is that he has to get back to work at the restaurant–which actually worked as a great gag in a lot of ways. It kind of sets up his last moment in this arc, improving upon the Ten’s awful cooking. And I enjoyed how that detail leads to him powering up Magu with his cooking. If only there was an official Magu-chan video game, where Naputaaku provides food as power-up items, like Isabelle in Smash for Wii U and 3DS; it would go well with his use of vegetable oil to slip up the Ten.
The Gags
Some gags didn’t quite work for me in translation. I don’t mean that the gag would have worked better in the original Japanese: I mean that, at least when I hear it in English, it doesn’t work. For example, having Ren refer to the attack that fried Naputaaku, “Grand Cross Disaster,” as corny doesn’t work for me. While I get that it’s a joke on how the Ten and Izuma are walking RPG fantasy cliches, at least in English, that battle attack sounds fine, if not really descriptive–which itself could be just as good a joke.
And while I don’t quite blame the translation for this, I do think editorial at Viz needs to put a foot down in their style guide when it comes to disablist language: can we please stop using “lame”? I know that is the common word used in a lot of Japanese-to-English translations, but there have to be other words that get the same point across.
I’m also not sure how well the gags about Izuma and Seira’s childhood work. A “Luke, I am your father” gag can only go so far, although it’s appropriate, in keeping with a lot of Arthurian and Japanese legends, with gods and magical creatures as ancestors of powerful knights and mages. Still, I don’t think any of this went far enough to explain what Uneras saw in child Izuma’s potential: the gag overwhelms much of the meaningful character progression and emotional pull.
There are better jokes in this arc. Having those same two police officers, who always stop Izuma’s antics, show up as mall security guards to escort out the Ten for a disturbance was suitable and amusing. Uneras writing her farewell letter like a ransom note suits her devotion to tropes. And there are other fun touches, with setup in the first chapter and payoff in the last one, such as Uneras apologizing to Izuma’s pigeon for tricking them.
But I think the best gags come in the last chapter, not just Magu punishing Uneras but also the escalation in reaction images from Naputaaku, Ren, Izuma, and Magu realizing Ruru was never in danger and that Uneras once again tricked them. Seeing the usually serious Izuma look utterly terrified and brain-broken, and Magu ready to murder someone, is all a mood. We get another instance of Naputaaku being so shocked that his eye pops out of his mouth, this time from awful cooking from the Ten (again, he is our MVP, that cooking wonder).
I also appreciated Seira’s pigtails reacting in surprise to Ren’s arrival (but please, don’t make those two a thing, manga).
Action
As good as these gags were, it’s disappointing they seemed to come at the cost of the action. This is a gag series, not an action one, so that’s understandable. If I wanted a current Jump series mixing together comedy and action so adeptly, I’d read Mashle, which does that so well–and I hope to see it get an animated adaptation.
What may not work as well in this arc is how the comedy undermines some of the action beats. Of course it’s hilarious to have Gildabar brag that Ruru is trapped in the fifth room–only for Magu to blast a hole to turn all five rooms into one (how’s that for home remodeling?). As much as I wanted some typical shonen battles going through each of the five rooms, I also appreciate skipping ahead to wrap up an arc before it overstays its welcome (*cough* My Hero Academia *cough*).
Where Do We Go From Here?
So, where do we go from here?
You mean, aside from again dealing with the fans online panicking that the manga is close to getting canceled because the next chapter is pushed to the very back of this week’s upcoming issue of Jump?
Even though Kamiki just made special Magu-chan art for the upcoming Jump Festa?
Even though we’ve done this dance repeatedly, and every time Magu-chan pretty much is this close to getting canceled and releases a chapter that I could read and say, “Yeah, that was a good way to wrap up this series if it had to end here”?
Even though Magu-chan just had its first ever character popularity poll in Japan? And after all of this, suddenly, you’re all still worried it’s now going to get canceled?
This isn’t Cowboy Bebop on Netflix, people.
Seriously, y’all get exhausting, worrying that this series is canceled. Can none of you online talk about the good of this series? Can social media posts about Magu-chan ever be something other than “it’s going to get canceled soon, I can feel it”?
Look, this series will end at some point. It’s not as if there have not been earlier instances where I thought the series had reached a good stopping point. Plus, aside from far bigger concerns I have about how life is too short for this stuff, I’ve watched enough anime that ended too soon but reached a logical conclusion by adapting a chapter from the originating manga that in itself was a logical conclusion: this isn’t my first rodeo, I’ll miss Magu-chan when I can no longer keep reading it, but I appreciate all I got out of the series, and it’s not like I can’t keep re-reading chapters I really enjoyed (give or take ones that, no, we’re not going back to that colonial bullshit again).
What Could Happen Next?
Like I said, I hope the manga fleshes out more of the Ten, and I’m curious who is that earlier knight that Uneras said is reminiscent of Izuma. And now that we have pretty much had closure on Magu and Uneras’s antagonistic relationship, and re-affirmed just how much Ruru means to Magu, if all of this is leading to some series finale, where the Ten are part of the battle that helps Muscar and Magu finally reconcile, I’ll be satisfied.
