canonically, in the cosmere, Invested individuals persist in the cognitive realm for a short time after end of life in the physical. Considering Elhokar was in the midst of swearing the First Ideal, and was highly likely to have had numerous infused gems on his person, I think it's not only plausible but probable that he survived in the cognitive realm for at least a couple minutes after his death.
all that is to say, Elhokar got to see his son be rescued by Drehy and Skar. and also got to watch Kaladin Stormblessed crawl emotionally devastated towards his unmoving body. So you know. It's not all bad.

there more i think about it the more i realize that one of the main themes in the series is guilt and shame and how to redeem yourself even though what you did is (subjectively or objectively) unforgiveable. how can you live with yourself knowing that what you caused can never be undone?

Honestly, one of the funniest parts of The Stormlight Archive is when, at the end of the second book, someone asks Kaladin which safe place he left the king in.  Kaladin grins a very knowing grin, and the book immediately jump-cuts to a bed-ridden King Elhokar being bossed into eating his food by the Lopen’s mum. 😂🤣

Cannot get the idea out of my head of an AU where, instead of being thrown in jail after the duel, through some convoluted series of events Elhokar manages to get Kaladin strung up in a highstorm. This is PURELY for the comedic potential of him going outside after the highstorm to see Kaladin, sitting outside totally unharmed, eating stew, looking at him like 😐

I hate Sadeas for so many reasons, he’s a storming evil man, he’s a Cremling, and yet he’s so much more complex than I remember, and I hate him and know how evil he is, and I hate how he’s not always wrong, I hate him because he’s such a strong evil, he does want the best for alethkar and elhokar, he misses his friendship with dalinar, he did something truly brave during gavilar’s assassination, he blames dalinar on a way that makes sense, and he’s still a vile evil cremling, he is well written this post is about how much I like Brandon Sanderson’s character writing, he wrote well enough for me to hate a man and hate how I sometimes see a glimmer of hope, I only have 3 cosmere books left to read (lost metal, yumi, and sunlit man) but when I go back to way of kings like I am now I still see a glimmer of hope in Sadeas

When Kaladin had first met the king, he’d thought Elhokar lacked regality. Now, oddly, he thought Elhokar did look like a king. It wasn’t that the king had changed—the man still had his imperious features, with that overly large nose and condescending manner. The change was in Kaladin. The things he’d once associated with kingship—honor, strength of arms, nobility—had been replaced with Elhokar’s less inspiring attributes.
I think kaladin should have said this outloud in exactly this way. I think elhokar would have handled it really well.

Hey Stormlight fans why are we so quick to forgive Dalinar for killing innocents- including his own wife, but when it comes to Elhokar, whose worst crimes were just being immature and incompetent- both of which come from not being ready to inherit the throne- he's unforgiveable?
Do yall actually think Elhokar is irredeemable because he let Moash's grandparents die?? If so then yall should really take a good long look at Dalinar's arc and compare it to where Elhokar is when he's swearing the First Ideal, because Dalinar at his lowest on the whole was far worse than Elhokar ever was

writing this to say i finally finished the way of kings by brandon sanderson and before i start talking about the book i want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who’s liked, commented, reposted my previous stormlight posts. i suffer from severe social anxiety and depression and being so nicely welcomed into such a cool, heartwarming fandom made me happier than i felt in a good while.
now about the book:
. the scene between kaladin and the wit was so well written, it gave me goosebumps
. yeah i was right about sadeas, he is a sneaky little bastard, and i want him gone
. my girl shallan being able to soulcast without a soulcaster is so freaking awesome, curious to see where it leads her in the next book
. kaladin going full super sayajin and saving everyone’s ass at the tower after sadeas betrayal became one of my favorite moments in a fantasy book
. dalinar was speaking to the almighty all this time, now that was a plot twist
. TARAVANGIAN??????????????? not going to lie, didn’t expect that
. VOIDBRINGERS????????????? this revelation had me gagged
final considerations:
10/10, this is what a fantasy book should be, it had me hooked from start to finish, I rooted for the characters, I laughed, got frustrated, kicked my feet in the air, it’s been so long since a book made me feel this way, i can’t wait to read words of radiance.

So Design was actually meant to bond Elhokar and got Hoid when he didn't complete the bond?
God, Elhokar's whole story just gets sadder every time I read this series

Elhokar: It says here on your resume that you’re very creative?
Wit: Yes, Your Majesty.
Elhokar: And what exactly is it you create?
