Omg I love Junji Ito’s works too! I own all the english hardcover books that have been published so far
Now I’m curious what’s your favorite work by him 👀
I AM SO JELOUS OF YOU THAT IS SO COOOOOLLLLLL 😭😭
junji ito is seriously one of my fav, if not the fav, mangaka and horror creator out there, i’m not even a fan of cosmic horror that much but just the way he draws it, how skilled he is in the page flip technique, the way he draws body horror is just- AHHHHHH I ADORE HIMMMM
okay so, i have so many 😭 but my top three have to be earthbound, the window next door (that one freaked me out so fucking b a d d d d) and the town without streets (that one panel where the girl realises her father and brother are the ones spying on her, where she realises she’s unsafe in her own house iS SO GOOD)
tho, nothing even fucked me up as much as that one panel of soichi’s son- you know the one.

you know :)))

My Favorite Junji Ito stories
Hello! I haven’t written a manga post in a while, so I figured it was finally time to talk about the manga king of horror himself Junji Ito (although it is embarrassingly far from spooky month right now)
I would say I’m a casual fan of Ito’s work; I haven’t read any of his longer form stories like Uzumaki or the full Tomie book but I have read a decent amount of his short stories, so I wanted to highlight some of those with as few spoilers as possible. Let’s go!
Earthbound
Tumblr media
Hundreds of ordinary people are found stuck standing upright in random locations throughout Japan. These individuals all turn out to have been experiencing severe psychological distress, and they are unable to move from their spot no matter how hard they try. This story’s ending is one of my favorites of all of Junji Ito’s stories.
Death Row Doorbell
Tumblr media
A grieving family is repeatedly haunted by the apparition of the man who killed their father and brother, ringing the doorbell and begging for forgiveness each night. Yet according to the prison guards, he has never left his cell. Out of my favorites I would say this one disturbed me the most; I don’t know if other readers would agree with me but I definitely was sufficiently spooked.
Roar (of Ages)
Tumblr media
Two boys hiking in the woods suddenly spot a flash flood carrying dozens of screaming victims down the mountain. When they try to reach out and help, the flood vanishes as if it were never even there. This particular story reminded me a lot of the Mushishi series; it’s a lot more supernatural/mysterious than horror, in my opinion.
Anyway those are my main recommendations; I read all of these in the Smashed short story compilation. I’ve also read the Shiver collection but I think I liked Smashed better overall. Please let me know if you have any Junji Ito recs!
Thanks for reading,
-threecheersforinking

Smashed, A Book Review
Tumblr media
The reason I love horror as a genre is because so much of it is steeped with themes and symbolism. There's a lot to analyze and think about. Stuff to decode and understand. I care about what a text means and how to interpret it more than I care about characters, plot, or worldbuilding. You may have noticed this trend in the way I review books. What I love about Junji Ito's works are his concepts and themeing, and Smashed certainly has this going for it. Also, having gorgeous and andmospheric artwork helps.
Smashed, by Junji Ito, is a collection of short stories that share some common themes between them, such as obsession and the inability to move on from past trauma, but are otherwise unrelated. "Earthbound" tells the story of people who suddenly freeze in place in certain spots around town. They can speak and know why they're there, but refuse to explain. Then there's "Splendid Shadow Song" where a woman hears an angry break up song that gets viscerally stuck in her head for weeks. I particularly like this one because it also evokes how some art is built from trauma and can be damaging to those who are unprepared to emotionally handle it. "Death Row Doorbell" was about two homocide survivors who are stalked by an apparition of their parents' killer and was an interesting tale of revenge and forgiveness.
Now not every story in this collection is his finest work, and I would say that of the 3 Ito books I have read this one comes in 3rd (Uzumaki is my favorite). But Junji Ito is like pizza where even the stuff that isn't so good is still pretty damn great. There's good horror that's fun and good horror that isn't. Ito, at least for me, squarely falls in the fun category. Then again, I also enjoy things that are gross.
Also, the first story in this collection revolves around a woman with an eating disorder, so take that into consideration before you read. Not the trigger warning I was expecting with this book.

Do you have any Junji Ito recommendation for a new reader?
Hi!! Uzumaki is his most famous one (other than The Enigma of Amigara Fault) and also my fav! It’s one of his longer pieces (you can read it in one sitting but still) so if you’re looking for something shorter to get started I’d recommend Thing that Drifted Ashore, Gravetown, Beehive, Honored Ancestors, The Long Dream, Earthbound (SA warning), Bloodsucking Darkness, and Layers of Fear — those are some of his more famous short pieces. Splatterfilm is also kinda silly and fun
All his stuff is available online (I use manganelo for read it)

welcome to my twisted dick palace
my name is nimbus, i'm 19 years old, and this is my fucked up sideblog. i follow/like from @nimbuslightest, a blog where the dicks are considerably less twisted. you're probably gonna see a lot more original posts where i'm frankly oversharing around here.
as you may have guessed from the intro, this blog is intended for a somewhat more mature audience, so i'd prefer for anyone under 18 to go ahead and find some other enriching activity to engage themselves in that isn't following me.
most if not all of the more adult-oriented content i post/reblog is gonna be found over here. i'm also a queer person who's not averse to the usage and reclaiming of lgbtq+ slurs, so if you don't like seeing that sort of thing, there's no shame in deciding that this isn't the space for you.
my general identity is complicated and i don't feel like rewording it for the fuckteenth time so i'm gonna trust that you can figure that out on your own. plus i think my blog description gives the basic idea.
tags i'll use
#fuckwords - things i say myself in an outside voice
#art rb - reblogs containing others' art
#eaten posts - stuff i wanna save for later for one reason or another
#posts that fuck severely - stuff i'm really into for one reason or another
#somewhere softer - has a similar function to "posts that fuck severely" except it's more for comfort posts. it's pretty much just kimharry disco elysium at the moment for some weird reason don't look at me
#error_buffer_overflow - tag for posts that make me feel unreasonable. a hornypost warning can be attached to this blog as a whole but it's doubly applicable here
#nimbus scribbles - any art that i make, including drawings, writing, edits, or possibly even music, which i decide to post or reblog here
#pictures taken instantaneously - real-world pictures which do not feature myself
#shitkid sightings - real-world pictures which do feature myself
all of these tags will be used on this post if you wanna access them directly from here
stuff that's lodged in my brain
(current interests will be in bold if i remember to update)
disco elysium
hylics
earthbound/mother series
yume nikki & its fan projects (2kki most prominently)
vocal synths (vocaloid, utau, synthv)
team fortress 2
ultrakill
hotline miami
the binding of isaac
sonic the hedgehog
ena
jojo's bizarre adventure
half life (hlvrai included)
spiderverse
OFF by mortis ghost
homestuck
undertale
deltarune (specifically ch1, haven't played ch2)
the works of junji ito
john carpenter's the thing

Recenzija: Smashed
Tumblr media
Autor: Junji Ito
Datum: 04/08/2022
Ocijena: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
————————————————————————
Postala sam fan radova Junji Ita još u srednjoj školi, no osim "Uzumaki" nisam pročitala mnogo njegovih drugih djela.
