The Priest A Devil
One upon a dusky twilight, a lone mortal treads upon hallowed ground defiled by a devil.
A tender heart stricken by guilt bleeds so easily when in the wrong hands.
Yes, I did the deed. Happy Halloween!
Raphael x reader (gn)
Ao3 Link : Raphael's Diaries - Chapter 1 - MysticAwareness - Baldur's Gate (Video Games) [Archive of Our Own]
Tumblr media
The gloam of early twilight settled upon misty moors rising purple against the dusky sky.  A chill ran down your spine, the biting cold of approaching winter dewing upon your clothing as you walked through the mist.
Up ahead candlelight glimmered through the chapel’s stained-glass windows, casting a dance of light and shadow upon the frozen ground. Each of your footsteps crunched, hastening toward the promise of the warmth and restful refuge of your church.
An owl swooped low overhead on silent wings, hooting a doleful warning. Not for the first time on your journey the hairs on the back of your neck rose, alerting you to an unseen presence watching as you scurried like a church mouse up the sloping hill.
At last, your numb fingers brushed against the splintered wood of the chapel door, and it swung inward with a groan.  You had expected to be greeted by the usual gathering of villagers, welcoming and warming you into the cozy and expected ritual of every weekend evening.
Instead, stillness and silence invaded your ears, though the flickering sputter of the candles next to the confession booth drew your gaze.
You frowned.
The pews were empty. Had they gathered earlier today and just forgotten to tell you?  The bell that rang clear and loud hung motionless by the far wall. You touched the cold metal, and a layer of dust came away upon your finger. Within your bosom you felt the sudden heaviness of an unexplained dread. Somewhere from afar outside a piercing cry rose up, unlike any nighttime creature you’d before heard. It cut off abruptly, and the following silence was fraught with tension.
Your muscles were tense as a frozen deer under a hunter’s gaze. They slowly eased when no new noises followed the unexpected cry.
“May have been a fox.”  You muttered, the sound of your whispered voice too loud inside the stone walls. “Or a night hawk.”
The door where you had left it open crashed closed in what must’ve been a sudden breeze. The bombastic sound nearly sent you leaping out of your skin as you spun around and tripped over your own feet, your weight careening back against the wooden confession box, knocking the wind from your lungs.
“My apologies.”  A disembodied voice spoke at your back, seemingly coming from all around and nowhere.
A shriek tore from your throat, again your muscles twitching at the whim of your fear. You realized the voice was coming from inside the booth. It also gained a face as a middle-aged man ducked out and stood tall before you, smiling slightly as if suppressing mirth at your flighty reactions.
“Calm yourself.” His voice was rich and gravelly, decadent even.
You recognized his priestly garb and sucked in lungfuls of air, holding a calming hand against your hammering heart. “Father.”  You said with some relief. “You gave me quite a start.”
“Have you come to confess your sins? I was just finishing with another client of mine.”  The priest motioned toward the dark entrance to the box, and you peered inside, not seeing evidence of another person inside.
Your brow furrowed as you glanced back at him. “Client?  No, no I came for the Saturday gathering.”
“Saturday?”  The priest chuckled low through closed lips. “Nay, my child.  You are a whole day early, in fact.”
“That’s not…possible.”  You shook your head, trying to rid yourself of the irksome buzzing you heard, like the murmur of a hundred flies. Your eyes again found the unfamiliar priest. “Who are you? Where is Father Mors?”
The candles upon the altar crackled and danced violently as if in a sudden breeze. Though all the doors were closed. You glanced behind you, that unnerving prickle tingling against the nape of your neck.
“My name is Raphael.”  His black robes rustled against the rough stone floor as he bent politely at the waist, touching a hand to his chest. “My dear, you look positively blanched.  Come. Sit.”  Father Raphael moved to your side, the flickering candlelight throwing his form into a twisting and distorted shadow upon the wall behind. “I’m certain there is much we can discuss, you and I.”
His hand found the small of your back and practically pushed you into the confession box.  The dim light of the chapel dimmed into semi-blackness within the enclosed space, and you settled down uncertainly, hearing Father Raphael do the same beside you. A thin wooden wall and a small rectangular metal grate separated you from the unfamiliar priest.
There was silence, unprecedented as the only sound you heard was your own breathing echoed back at you.  From beyond the confines of the confession booth and the cobbled chapel you heard again a short wailing cry.  It sent a spike of cold fear through your heart.
“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.”  Your throat was nearly too tight to speak properly, dread coiling like a twisting vine inside your soul.  You cleared your voice and continued. “My last confession was two weeks ago.”
No answer.
The sound of your breathing continued, growing heavier and shorter as the unease within your chest mounted.
“Father?”
Then Raphael spoke at last, the dim orange glow from the candles reflecting through the metal grate like two flaming eyes. “My condolences about your late husband.”  His words sent your heart into your throat. “What a truly tragic affair.”
“How did you-”
“Know?” Raphael interrupted, chuckling again. The sound reverberating against the metal grate. “It is, quite literally, my business.  My bread and bloody butter.  But don’t allow me to interrupt, you have a confession to make.”
All warmth had drained from your face, your eyes staring wide into the darkness of the booth. You licked your lips, mouth suddenly dry.
You squeezed your hands together upon your lap until your fingers hurt, trying to block out the memories that had followed you like ghosts since that dreadful day.
“Come now.”  The priest’s voice sharpened sternly. “Cat got your tongue?  You came all this way to play the part of the penitent sinner. Well then.  Play.”
Hot tears began rolling down your clammy cheeks. “It wasn’t an accident.”  You spoke into the abyss, willing the words to take your torment with them into the void. “It was my fault.  My anger.”
“You killed him?”  Raphael spoke and his tone rang mocking against your ears. “Shocking.  Would you like to know where his soul is right now?  What torment he suffers that you will soon take part in?”
“I…what?”  Your voice rasped with shock and alarm, the feeling of impending doom rearing like a snake about to strike. You fumbled in the box, striking your head against the wooden frame as you burst through the opening back into the chill chapel air.
You threw aside the adjoining curtain and fell back with another strangled cry, your eyes wide upon the empty bench.
“Oh my god!”  You stifled your cry against your shaking hand, stumbling back until you found the wall to lean against, your horrified gaze still fixed upon the vacant booth.
Slowly lowering your hand, you looked around the chapel, every flicker of shadow sending a jolt of alarm through you.
“Father?”
“’Bless you’?”  His breath was hot upon your ear, sharp nails digging into the back of your neck before you could flee. “For you have sinned.”  Raphael towered over you now, his visage changed into a creature from beyond the scope of your most dreadful nightmare.
Firelight sparked within black eyes, horns sprouted from crimson skin, sharp teeth grinning down at you.  Batlike wings spread wide, caging you against the wall and muting the firelight beyond into a red glow.
You closed your eyes, tears streaking down your face, and muttered a rapid prayer to your god.
Raphael listened, amused, with a cocked head.  His glowing eyes roved over your tear-stained face. “No god will deign to help you now, little pet.  You killed your husband.”
You gasped, the edges of your vision dimming as you fought to stay conscious. “It was self-defense!”
“A paltry excuse!”  The devil laughed at you. “I am no impartial judge!  Your blundering resulted in the premature end of a most beneficial contract.”  His hand moved to tangle in your hair and tightened, arching your neck back. “And I always exact what I am owed.”
With a sneer of disgust, the creature released you and stepped back, his wings flaring wide before nestling against his back. A long tail whipped in agitation, drumming against the confessional booth as Raphael considered your quaking form. “Thwarted after decades of painstaking planning. And by such a wilting flower too.”
That rankled. “He got what he deserved!”  You spat out, your fear beginning to morph into desperate anger.
Raphael raised an eyebrow. “Perhaps.  The only justice I care about, however, is mine.”  His eyes traveled the length of your body before once again meeting your eyes. “And my ledger states you now owe me a great debt. Come.”  He strode forward and seized your wrist, only smirking when you fought to break free. “We have business to attend to. Together.”

I would like to offer this resource for therians, an extensive list of all of Sir David Attenborough’s nature documentaries that are available on soap2day, and a full list of what species* they each (notably, prominently) feature the natural behaviors of, separated by episode, and omitting species that were only shown dead, juvenile or being predated on. This took me a while (I have been working on it since Prehistoric Planet’s release) because I did in fact have to watch every single series in full in order to list all the species and the episodes are around 50 minutes long, but enjoy.
Long post ahead:
Most of these shows have closed captioning, which is why I’ve picked soap2day. Planet Earth is the only one that doesn’t. I did not include Dynasties and Dynasties II because each episode only features one species.
Thank you to Birch (@ambiguousmutt) for his help (he watched about half of the episodes) so I didn’t have to do it individually. Credit goes to him as well.
*Sometimes Attenborough doesn’t say the specific species and I was too busy trying to get through the episodes to identify it. In those cases I just put the most specific name I could.

Operation Stumpy Re-Read
TWOW: Victarion I
My little airhead! ❤️
The Noble Lady was a tub of a ship, as fat and wallowing as the noble ladies of the green lands. Her holds were huge, and Victarion packed them with armed men. With her would sail the other, lesser prizes that the Iron Fleet had taken on its long voyage to Slaver's Bay, a lubberly assortment of cogs, great cogs, carracks, and trading galleys salted here and there with fishing boats. It was a fleet both fat and feeble, promising much in the way of wool and wines and other trade goods and little in the way of danger. Victarion gave the command of it to Wulf One-Ear. "The slavers may shiver when they spy your sails rising from the sea," he told him. "but once they see you plain they will laugh at their fears. Traders and fishers, that's all you are. Any man can see that. Let them get close as they like, but keep your men hidden belowdecks until you are ready. Then close, and board them.
Explain to me how somebody can be stupid when they're so clever in battle. Impossible!
Compare this to Barry's strategy: leaving the protection of the walls and running at them.
Barristan: 0
Vicky: 1
+.+.+
Free the slaves and feed the slavers to the sea, but take the ships. We will have need of every hull to carry us back home.
Victarion wants all the slaves freed, whereas Barry told his men spare them if you can. That's not good enough.
Barristan: 0
Vicky: 2
+.+.+
The warship and the cog parted ways. In the distance the rest of Victarion's famed fleet was raising sail. A ragged cheer went up from the crew of the Iron Victory, and was answered in kind by the men of the Noble Lady.
Nobody cheered for Barry.
Barristan: 0
Vicky: 3
+.+.+
Victarion had given Wulf his best fighters. He envied them. They would be the first to strike a blow, the first to see that look of fear in the foemen's eyes.
Of course he did! A selfless king.
Meanwhile, Barry's monopolizing all the pit fighters, while simultaneously looking down on them.
Barristan: 0
Vicky: 4
It's a blowout.
+.+.+
All that was done and gone now, though. Victarion would have his due at last. I have the horn, and soon I will have the woman. A woman lovelier than the wife he made me kill.
I'm going to guess Victarion Greyjoy has narrow ideals when it comes to physical attractiveness.
Daenerys is currently emaciated, with minimal hair. I won't endorse whatever thoughts may cross his mind when he eventually sees her, but I can't promise I won't laugh.
+.+.+
Three of them, and strong ones. "Send them to my cabin. I'll want the priest as well." The oarsmen were all big. One was a boy, one a brute, one a bastard's bastard. The Boy had been rowing for less than a year, the Brute for twenty. They had names, but Victarion did not know them. One had come from Lamentation, one from Sparrow Hawk, one from Spider Kiss. He could not be expected to know the names of every thrall who had ever pulled an oar in the Iron Fleet.
Agreed! Ridiculous expectation. If they wanted to be known they should have considered being named Ralf.
+.+.+
Moqorro brought it forth, and the dusky woman lifted up a lantern to give them all a look. In the shifting lantern light the hell-horn seemed to writhe and turn in the priest’s hands like a serpent fighting to escape.
See how quickly Vicky has Moqorro and the enslaved woman of colour cooperating?
Daenerys needs Vicky, like Jon needs Sansa.
+.+.+
"My brother found this thing on Valyria," Victarion told the thralls. "Think how big the dragon must've been to bear two of these upon his head. Bigger than Vhagar or Meraxes, bigger than Balerion the Black Dread." He took the horn from Moqorro and ran his palm along its curves. "At the Kingsmoot on Old Wyk one of Euron's mutes blew upon this horn. Some of you will remember. It was not a sound that any man who heard it will ever forget." "They say he died," the Boy said, "him who blew the horn." "Aye. The horn was smoking after. The mute had blisters on his lips, and the bird inked across his chest was bleeding. He died the next day. When they cut him open his lungs were black."
We have every reason to question whether Euron actually found this horn in Valyria.
A smile played across Euron's blue lips. "I am the storm, my lord. The first storm, and the last. I have taken the Silence on longer voyages than this, and ones far more hazardous. Have you forgotten? I have sailed the Smoking Sea and seen Valyria."
[...]
"Have you?" the Reader asked, so softly.
Euron's blue smile vanished. "Reader," he said into the quiet, "you would do well to keep your nose in your books." - The Reaver, AFFC
What I didn't notice until now is the striking similarities between the mute's death and when Melisandre killed that eagle.
The sound was shocking, ear-piercing, thick with agony. Varamyr fell, writhing, and the 'cat was screaming too . . . and high, high in the eastern sky, against the wall of cloud, Jon saw the eagle burning. For a heartbeat it flamed brighter than a star, wreathed in red and gold and orange, its wings beating wildly at the air as if it could fly from the pain. Higher it flew, and higher, and higher still. - Jon X, ASOS
x
His last death had been by fire. I burned. At first, in his confusion, he thought some archer on the Wall had pierced him with a flaming arrow… but the fire had been inside him, consuming him. And the pain… - Prologue, ADWD
vs.
All eyes turned toward the sound. It was one of Euron's mongrels winding the call, a monstrous man with a shaved head. Rings of gold and jade and jet glistened on his arms, and on his broad chest was tattooed some bird of prey, talons dripping blood.
[...]
It was a terrible sound, a wail of pain and fury that seemed to burn the ears. Aeron Damphair covered his, and prayed for the Drowned God to raise a mighty wave and smash the horn to silence, yet still the shriek went on and on. It is the horn of hell, he wanted to scream, though no man would have heard him. The cheeks of the tattooed man were so puffed out they looked about to burst, and the muscles in his chest twitched in a way that it made it seem as if the bird were about to rip free of his flesh and take wing. And now the glyphs were burning brightly, every line and letter shimmering with white fire. - The Drowned Man, AFFC
I don't know what this means.
Does the horn have something to do with R'hllor?
The sound it made … it burned, somehow. As if my bones were on fire, searing my flesh from within. - Victarion I, ADWD
x
"Here it says, 'No mortal man shall sound me and live.'" - Victarion I, ADWD
Looking back, this feels like R'hllor nonsense.
+.+.+
He brushed his hand across one of the red gold bands and the ancient glyph seemed to sing beneath his fingertips. For half a heartbeat he wanted nothing so much as to sound the horn himself.
Am I crazy, or does that read like the horn has a hypnotic grip on him?
+.+.+
Euron was a fool to give me this, it is a precious thing, and powerful. With this I'll win the Seastone Chair, and then the Iron Throne. With this I'll win the world.
Euron is a lot of things, but he's no fool.
He's never giving up the horn if it's in any way useful.
+.+.+
"Claggorn blew the horn thrice and died for it. He was as big as any of you, and strong as me. So strong that he could twist a man's head right off his shoulders with only his bare hands, and yet the horn killed him."
"Cragorn's died, you know."
"Who?"
"The man who blew my dragon horn. When the maester cut him open, his lungs were charred as black as soot." - The Reaver, AFFC
Tumblr media
+.+.+
"It will kill us too, then," said the Boy. Victarion did not oft forgive a thrall for talking out of turn, but the Boy was young, no more than twenty, and soon to die besides. He let it pass.
Lol.
One day you will all come to realize Victarion is as entertaining as Cersei, and then you'll all owe me an apology.
+.+.+
"The mute sounded the horn three times. You three will sound it only once. Might be you'll die, might be you won't. All men die. The Iron Fleet is sailing into battle. Many on this very ship will be dead before the sun goes down – stabbed or slashed, gutted, drowned, burned alive – only the Gods know which of us will still be here come the morrow. Sound the horn and live and I'll make free men of you, one or two or all three. I'll give you wives, a bit of land, a ship to sail, thralls of your own. Men will know your names."
Does it actually need to be sounded three times? Is that written anywhere? Are we only doing that because Claggorn did?
+.+.+
"You will sail with me on Iron Victory," he told them, "but you will not join the battle. Boy, you're the youngest – you'll sound the horn first. When the time comes you will blow it long and loud. They say you are strong. Blow the horn until you are too weak to stand, until the last bit of breath has been squeezed from you, until your lungs are burning. Let the freedmen hear you in Meereen, the slavers in Yunkai, the ghosts in Astapor. Let the monkeys shit themselves at the sound when it rolls across the Isle of Cedars. Then pass the horn along to the next man. Do you hear me? Do you know what to do?"
As discussed in the previous chapter, without even factoring in how the dragons (or Victarion?) might react to it, there's a possibility this horn creates a lot of confusion and chaos.
"Listen for my horn," Ser Barristan told them. "If you hear the retreat, fall back. Our walls stand behind us, packed with Brazen Beasts. Our foes dare not come too close, or they will find themselves in crossbow range. If you hear the horn sound advance, advance at once. Make for my standard or the queen's." - Barristan I, TWOW
+.+.+
They left him one by one. The three thralls, and then Moqorro. Victarion would not let him take the hell-horn. "I will keep it here with me, until it is needed." "As you command. Would you have me bleed you?"
Looks like Vicky has gone ahead with horn blood magic.
"Your brother did not sound the horn himself. Nor must you." Moqorro pointed to the band of steel. "Here. 'Blood for fire, fire for blood.' Who blows the hellhorn matters not. The dragons will come to the horn's master. You must claim the horn. With blood." - Victarion I, ADWD
Do you see how he won't let Moqorro have the horn? Something weird is going on, I can feel it.
If he can bleed, does that confirm he's not dead/reanimated?
+.+.+
Victarion seized the dusky woman by the wrist and pulled her to him. "She will do it. Go pray to your red god. Light your fire, and tell me what you see." Moqorro's dark eyes seemed to shine. "I see dragons."
I see dead people.
Final thoughts:
That's not the end of the chapter.
Tumblr media
(my phrasing) Thanks for clarifying, lol.
"My horn...dragons..." is giving this:
Tumblr media
I fear my Vicky has done something terribly stupid.
It's okay, he'll be fine. Trust the process. Everything is going according to plan. Falling into molten rock with a ring, falling into the ocean with your brother ... same thing.
Next chapter: Tyrion I (summary #1, summary #2)

Your OCs as parrots?
oooh, interesting question!! This will be fun!
Okay well for starters Ophelia is an African Grey hands-down. No contest. They're wickedly smart, but can be total nuisances or even outright dangerous when they get bored.
Tumblr media
Rae is a dusky lory... mainly because they look SO COOL and I didn't know what other parrot to put for her. I just really like their markings, and while her markings from her mutation are silver instead of silver, the shapes and patterns reminded me of her
Tumblr media
Robin is a blue-fronted Amazon parrot, since they're known for being excellent in mimicking speech, songs, and other sounds
Tumblr media
Jasper is a New Zealand kākā, mainly because I think their plumage looks really neat (and pretty punk, fitting for Jasper). Either that, or a black lory for the same reasons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kestrel is a hawk-headed parrot, also namely for their plumage. Obviously they're modeled after an American kestrel, which is definitely not a parrot, so this was the closest thing I could come up with.
Tumblr media
Quinn is a harlequin macaw. "Harley Quinn" pun aside, they're bright and flashy, deceptively smart, and will absolutely bite your finger off if you don't treat them right. Perfect!
Tumblr media
I've compared Madison to a Major Mitchell's cockatoo before, and I still like that comparison, but I also think the crimson rosella would be a good match for her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Indigo is an Eastern bluebonnet, based on their size and plumage. They're small birds, and when they're sitting still they look fairly nondescript. But at the right angle, or with their wings spread, they've got some really impressive colors!
Tumblr media
And I know I've said this before, but Katherine is a sun conure

I fell asleep sorry XD
Kay, here it is : the alts birb list

Gabriel - Harpy eagle-Gray hawk hybrid "Noah" - Dusky hawk Preacher - White-necked hawk Alt!Thatcher and ". . . ." - Golden pheasant Miss Faceless - White cockatoo Six/Stanley - Harpy eagle Alt!Cesar and ". . . ." - Raven-Gray hawk hybrid and White-tailed eagle N - Elf owl ??? - Golden eagle ??? - Golden eagle [MISSING] - Harpy eagle
I just wanted the last child to be the 12th and not the 10th , so boom, slightly older siblings exist that will play no role in the story because they're not in Gabe's custody anymore

okay nobody asked and this is incredibly niche but I saw someone else drew ga'hoole au vash and knives on twitter so here's my own trigun / guardians of ga'hoole au thoughts (triga'hoole? guardians of gunsmoke maybe? I dont think owls know what guns are idfk)
First off what owls what characters would be, my choices are mostly vibe/appearance based but theres some meaning to some of em Vash and Knives: barn owls. of course. generic protag owl but fitting in appearance anyway Wolfwood: stygian owl Meryl: some sort of scops owl? maybe cyprus scops owl? they're little guys and. scops. camera. you get it Milly: blakiston's fish owl Roberto: dusky eagle owl Livio / Razlo: snowy owl ill die on this hill Legato: lesser sooty owl (metalbeak / surtr was a greater sooty) Zazie: desert owl OR some sort of bay owl because those things are so bug-like to me Elendira: either ural owl or short eared owl, yknow, the same as otulissa in the movie, the really cunty one Midvalley: eastern screech owl E.G. Mine: laughing owl Monev: great grey owl? Leonof: northern white faced owl (old man energy) Dominique: spectacled owl Hoppered: madagascar owl Gray: well. hm. im not sure about that actually. bunch of pygmy owls? Rai-Dei: long-eared owl? not sure Caine: fearful owl Conrad: crested owl. bald ass head with white tufts on the sides Brad: pel's fishing owl Luida: northern hawk owl Rem: black banded owl maybe?
I imagine knives / the gung ho guns would be the pure ones? knives and legato would be the only tytos in that case but yknow what im sure theres symbolism to be had with that so fuck it we ball

Animals that Should Be in the Wild Series:
Faron Dusk Monkeys (Technically TP) = Faron & Ordona. - Inspired by the Monkeys from Twilight Princess, but also Dusky Titi Monkeys. I really like those!
Elk (BotW: SW) = Central Hyrule.
Marriage Doves = Necluda & East Faron Coast. These lovely white birds with pink, heart-shaped beaks are born with only one wing each (males a right wing & females a left wing) & mate for life. It's only when they find their mate, always of the opposite wing, that the pair are finally able to fly. - Inspired by Jian Birds.
Mountain Crows (MC & MM) = The little fuckers that steal your rupees. Even though they are commonly depicted as being the familiars of evil witches, this is actually due to how they are associated with death. In reality, most animals refuse to associate with users of black magic due to its corruptive nature. In fact, Corvids tend to despise those who use black magic & will attack viciously & in groups. Crows typically only attack Links for their Rupees due to how shiny they are.
Ravens = Actually much more chill than Crows & not as likely to attack people for their shinies. If one were to compare Crows with muggers, then Ravens are more akin to pickpockets. Even though they are commonly depicted as being the familiars of evil witches, this is actually due to how they are associated with death. In reality, most animals are much more likely to attack users of black magic due to its corruptive nature. In fact, Corvids tend to despise those who use black magic & will attack viciously & in groups. Ravens generally don't physically attack people unless they've done something to specifically legitimately piss them off such as use black magic. Oddly slow to true anger & will mostly instead choose to play petty pranks on people who've angered them. Ravens typically actually have very little issue with Links unless they do something to stir their ire. They'll still steal from Link's, but they won't attack them.
Crown-Crested Swans = A type of swan that bears a crest of golden feathers upon its head that greatly resembles a crown from the side. The feathers of its wings & tail also turn sky blue at the tips. Can be either domestic or wild. The Royal Family used to raise them in the Castle Gardens. They mostly live in Central Hyrule, but you can still find a handful in Necluda & Lanayru. Though, you really only see wild ones out that far & it's best to just leave them be. Can be aggressive fuckers despite how pretty they are.
Loftwings (SS) = Domestic. Sky Islands. - Resembles a shoebill.
Remlits (SS) = Domestic. Sky Islands. The unevolved cousin to the Zonai.
Shroom-Snout Swine = Domestic. Greater Hyrule. Used to hunt for mushrooms, especially buried Hearty Truffles & Big Hearty Truffles. - Technically, you could call it a reference to the Pig Mask from MM.
Bighorn Sheep = Domestic. Gerudo Region, both desert & highlands. Used for their milk & their wool which is good for both desert & snowy mountain climates depending on whether the wool is summer weight or winter weight. Highland-dwelling Bighorn Sheep have noticeably thicker coats.
War Boars (TP) = Gerudo Desert. These giant boars used to be used as war mounts by the Gerudo. Not nearly as quick as their horses, but definitely more powerful & durable. Not to mention dangerous with those tusks.
Dunerunner Ostriches = Gerudo Desert. Can be domesticated, but takes skill to do so. Faster on the sand than War Boars or Sand Seals & some can be even faster than horses, but they are also far more difficult to tame & ride than horses. They're also not suitable for Gerudo mounts & are thus more likely to be raised for their eggs. However, Hylians are the perfect size to ride one.
Rainbow Peacocks = Gerudo Oases, Gerudo Town, & Faron Jungle. Also called Oasis Peacocks.
Dusttail Foxes = Gerudo Desert. - Inspired by Fennec Foxes.
Lanayru Serpents = The waters of Lanayru & Necluda.
- Sand Vipers = Gerudo Desert. Very poisonous.
- Gerudo Cobras = Gerudo Desert. Very poisonous. It's hood is used as the symbol representative of the Gerudo as a whole.
- Royal Cobras = Gerudo Desert. An extremely poisonous snake. Heavily associated with Gerudo Royalty. The pattern on the back of the hood is different depending on whether it is male or female. Gerudo Kings by blood get the mark on the hood of male Royal Cobras tattooed onto their body. The same is said of Gerudo Queens by birth getting a tattoo of the female Royal Cobra's hood. Male Royal Cobras are referred to as kings & the females as queens.
Cobra Sharks = Lives in the Gerudo Desert, in flowing sand. Though, they're tenacious & vindictive motherhubbards, & if they really have it out for you, they'll jump onto the more solid sand & are even able to follow their prey quite a while before eventually losing traction. At that point, they are basically 'dead in the water' & will die anyway, so might as well make their deaths worth something. They have a type of enzyme in their gums that facilitates infection in those they bite in a similar way to venom, thus earning them their name. Due to living in sand, they have no eyes & instead, navigate mainly by scent & sound. Unlike most sandfish, this one needs to be lured to the surface & killed manually, best to use spears. The Gerudo refer to them as Kōbra Samàqen. - Resembles a Zebra Shark if they had stripes instead of spots. Note: Finning is illegal even in Hyrule & the law is enforced strictly. Also, please note that Shark Fin doesn't actually have any flavor. The reason its fins are used is so that no part of the shark is wasted. However, Shark Meat is delicious. Each shark gives 4-8 Shark Fins, 3-5 Shark Meat, 1-3 Shark Bones, & between 5 & as many as 10 Shark Teeth, but higher numbers have decreasing potentiality.
Roc = A massive-ass, fuck-off desert bird so large that its wings block out the sun & a beat from them causes gale force sand tornadoes. Its feathers are imbued with wind magic & were once used to make Roc Capes, which allowed the wearer to jump high, long distances, & even glide. Much like the Sīmurgh, can pick up & carry off full-grown Molduga. This makes it the natural predator of said Molduga. Acts as a sort of mini-boss much like Hinoxes & Lynels despite not being monsters. Tough, they do tend to cause issues for people by taking livestock.
Gerudàn Horses (OoT, BotW, & TotK) = Basically the Giant Horse, but more than one & these ones are specifically bred & raised by the Gerudo, which they use as calvary & in horseback archery. The only horses that can travel the desert as they are specifically trained to do so. The Gerudo also know how to forge special horseshoes that helps them distribute their weight, thus allowing them to travel more quickly over the sand. The only horses that can carry a full-grown Gerudo.
Goponga Alligator = Lanayru, mostly around the Lanayru Swamplands & Lanayru Great Spring areas.
- Faron Crocodile = Faron Jungle only.
Oxen Sharks = The Oxen Shark swims all along the Faron-Necludic Coast. Their population is strictly regulated. As such, they are sustainable enough to be eaten if a person only catches one. Faron Coastal residents will often catch one or two & have little parties where the featured ingredient is shark as they use as much of the animal as possible. The Sheikah refer to Oxen Sharks as Oushizame (牡牛ザメ, direct translation). Residents of Lurelin refer to them as Kauo Niuhi. - Note: Finning is illegal even in Hyrule & the law is enforced strictly.
Ordon Goats (TP) = Both Wild & Domestic. Ordona & seasonally Gerudo. Unique in that they're much larger than other goats with gray-ish blue fur & horns that form a complete circle or ovoid atop their heads. So large, in fact, that the average Hylian can ride a fully-grown one. Their milk has a distinct taste that separates it from that of other goats. While they can also be found in the Gerudo Region during certain seasons, they mostly dwell in Ordona as that is where they are native. As such, the Gerudo know how to care for them, but not nearly to the same degree as Ordonians. - The Faron Grasslands being renamed Ordona here.
Flamingos = Faron, especially Lurelin.
Cats (TP & MC) = Domestic. Greater Hyrule. Why are there no cats?? Maybe a few of different kinds like Tabbies, Oranges, Calicos.
- Mountain Cats = Wild & dangerous. Lives on forested mountains all over Hyrule, including Central Hyrule, Necluda, Lanayru, & Akkala. - A mix of Bobcats & Mountain Lions.
- Mountain Tigers = Wild & dangerous. Lives in the Hebra Mountains. - Like a mix between a Mountain Lion & a White Bengal Tiger.
- Jungle Tigers = Wild & extremely dangerous. Ferocious. Lives in the Faron Jungle & will occasionally wander into the Faron East Coast. Caution: Extremely dangerous because water won't stop them as they actually quite enjoy swimming. One of the most dangerous predators in Hyrule that isn't a monster. Superseded by Lynels. At least, one on one. The 2 creatures have only been noted to meet once or twice as most Lynels prefer open areas while Jungle Tigers prefer densely wooded areas. The one known time they have been recorded to meet, it was a Red Lynel who had trespassed in the Faron East Coast. While the Lynel managed to fight off the solo Jungle Tiger, it later came back with its pride & they managed to kill the Lynel by luring it into uneven terrain & sneak attacking it before piling on top of him, though not without losing a few. It has thus been concluded that while not as dangerous alone as even a Red Lynel on their own, they have the advantage of being more cooperative than Lynels, who are solitary by nature. - Like a larger Bengal Tiger, but with saberteeth.
- Sand Cats = Domestic. Lives in the Gerudo Desert. Very, very small, but very, very deadly if provoked. Fantastic hunters & trackers. And extremely sassy. A bit smaller than the typical housecat. May share a common ancestor with Remlits. - Inspired by IRL Sand Cats, but spotted like cheetahs instead of striped & possessing long claws.
- Snow Cats = Domestic. Lives in the Gerudo Highlands. Very, very small, but very, very deadly if provoked. Fantastic hunters & trackers. And extremely sassy. Used to be Sand Cats until they migrated with their mistresses to live in the Highlands. May share a common ancestor with Remlits. - Inspired by Sand Cats, Snow Leopards, & Maine Coons. The coloration & patterning of Snow Leopards, the long, fluffy fur of Maine Coons, & the broad ears & size of Sand Cats. Also having very long claws.
- Dune Leopards = The wild cousin of the Sand Cat. From which the Sand Cats were domesticated from. - Imagine a spotted Sand Cat about the size of a Bobcat.
Highland Yaks = Domestic. Gerudo Highlands. Used for yak wool & yak milk.
Meadow Rabbits = Hyrule Field.
- Snowdrift Rabbits = Hebra & the Gerudo Highlands.
- Wasteland Hare = Gerudo Desert, Gerudo Canyon, & the Ordona Grasslands.
- Jackalope = Gerudo Desert, Gerudo Canyon, & the Ordona Grasslands. An extremely rare hare with antlers. Often mistaken for Blupees at night, so it isn't unusual to shoot them by accident only for the hunter to feel somewhat guilty when instead of some quick change, he finds the corpse of an antlered hare. It's considered a mixed bag of sorts as the feet are considered good luck, but the antlers are bad luck. As a result, people tend to view them as fae of sorts. Some people speculate that Jackalopes are actually male Wasteland Hares as no one has really seemed to catch a male hare before.
Forest Owls = Wooded areas. Nocturnal.
- Snow Owls = Wooded areas in Hebra. Nocturnal. Often mistaken for ghosts due to how silently they can fly, their ghostly white color, the tapetum lucidum in their eyes, & the fact that they're only seen at night.
Tabantha Oxen = Domestic. Tabantha Tundra. Provides Fresh Milk.
Lon Lon Cows (OoT & MC technically) = A bovine raised exclusively at Lon Lon Ranch. They have a mostly cream-colored coat, speckled sparingly with small black & peachy pink-colored splotches (more pink splotches than black ones) & even more sparingly with larger tan splotches. They also tend to have star-shaped patterns on their foreheads. - Inspired by Star Cows & Marbled Cows from A Wonderful Life.
Big-Horned Rhinoceros = Hebra Mountains & Gerudo Highlands. The fuck did they go???
Dolphins = Because cool. Not rapists of the sea here. Faron & Necluda Seas.
Unicorns = Because why not? Old forests of Greater Hyrule. Its horn gives it access to purifying & healing magic.
Pegasi = Because Pegasus Boots but no pegasi?? Sky Islands.
Hippocampi = Because need more aquatic animals. Faron & Necluda Seas.
- Horned Hippocampi = Has a narwhal-like horn on its forehead that it uses to channel magic & control the currents around it.
- Finned Hippocampi = Has back fins similar to that of a flying fish, allowing it to jump out of the water & glide a short distance.
Phoenix = Very Rare. Sky Islands & Eldin Region. Can be killed, but it's considered bad luck. When killed it bursts into flames & crumbles into ash before leaving behind a few drops. It's implied that the Pheonix isn't actually dead, rather restarting its life cycle. However, being forced to repeat said cycle when they don't need to is actually very frustrating & inconvenient, not to mention rude. In the beginning, the Phoenixes are corrupted by evil & are instead called Furnixes. After purifying their queen & helping her with a purifying ritual, the Phoenixes return to their original states & gift Link with rare drops whenever they see him. Or in the case of Link being in battle at the time, they will come to his aid.
- Phoenix Queen = The benevolent monarch of the Phoenixes. Very large & resembles the Fenghuang, having peacock-like traits. When Link meets her, she is known as the Furnix Queen & acts as a boss, however upon defeating her (specifically with the Master Sword, a Light Arrow, or some form of Light or Twilight Magic), she bursts into flames & her ashes fall upon the ground. If Link later returns to the place where he defeated her & the thing that dealt the final blow was either the Master Sword or some form of Light or Twilight Magic, then in the place of the Furnix Queen will be the Phoenix Queen, who will thank Link graciously for purifying her. She will then request that he aid her in a ritual that will purify all her kin. After which, all the Furnixes will change to Phoenixes.

Monsters that Should Be in the Wild Series:
Vulpos (MC Keaton) = Dashes at you & steals your shit. They may, in fact, be corrupted MM Keaton. Defeating them with Light/Twilight magic or weapons returns them to their natural state of Keatons, who may reward you for the favor.
Wolfos (OoT Wolfos with TP graphics) = Wolves corrupted by evil. Defeating them with Light/Twilight magic or weapons returns them to their natural state.
Wohsu (AoL) = Just wolf men.
Dark Keese (SS) = Undead Keese. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them.
Cursed Bokoblin (SS) = Undead Bokoblin. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them.
Metal Chuchu (MC) = Could make boomerangs viable.
- Rock Chuchu = Need a hammer to smash their helmets.

Geozards = Just straight up evil Zora. Just to help fill up the ocean. Otherwise, there's only Blue Lizalfos & Water Octoroks. Can't be purified, because they are evil via their own decisions.
Deku Babas (TP & SS) =
Skulltulas (OoT & TP) = I hated them growing up.
Darknuts = A monster in armor. Just another challenging enemy to fight. Something with good ai & capable of strategy.
- Iron Knuckles = Acts as another challenging enemy to fight. Something with good ai. They are actually said to be Gerudo who have either been corrupted by dark magic or brainwashed or are just loyal to Ganondorf. As such, there is a moral weight behind fighting them. Those that are corrupted, when defeated by the Master Sword or some form of Light or Twilight magic, will then be released from their corruption. If not, then when Link returns to the area, he will find a ghost who will thank him for releasing her from her imprisonment even if it meant killing her. However, this will end up barring Link from any quests that he might've gotten from her had he purified her instead.
Ampilus (SS) = Inhabits the desert to the southwest of Hyrule. They are able to internally generate electricity. Their shells are able to disperse weight very well, which allows them to traverse quicksand without worry. As a result, desert inhabitants use their shells to make armor. They live to be very old.
Poes (old game enemies) = It would've been interesting to actually have to fight some of the Poes rather than just pick them up like items. Maybe the lore could be that if a Poe Soul (the non-combative Poes in the canon Wild games) gathers too much negativity (On'nen) it rises to the surface & creates pseudo-flesh & it attacks you. Only hurt by Light/Twilight weapons such as Dazzlefruit, Diamonds, & Light Dragon Parts, the Master Sword, or by specially-forged Sheikah weaponry. When defeated, they drop a Poe Soul & Dark Clumps insinuating that the Dark Clumps are pieces of the pseudo-flesh that they made. However, much like in OoT & MM, there are certain Poes that can instead be talked down or soothed.
- Imp Poes (TP) = These ones are very specifically the Imp Poes from Twilight Princess. These Poes very specifically can't be soothed or reasoned with the way certain ordinary Poes can.
- Big Poes = A sort of Poe leader. Still functions much like an ordinary Poe, but much larger & much stronger.
Furnix (SS) = A phoenix corrupted by evil. Once a benevolent creature, now an enemy. Can be purified by defeating it with Light/Twilight magic.
- Queen Furnix = Corrupted queen of the phoenixes. Must be vanquished by weapons wielding sacred or Light/Twilight magic or she will simply come back next Blood Moon.
Tektites (MC, OoT, & TP) = Jumpy fuckers.
Bullbos (TP) = As mounts for Moblins & Boss Bokoblins. Basically, War Boars corrupted by evil to become monsters. Defeating them with Light/Twilight magic or weapons returns them to their natural state.
Kargarocs (TP & WW) = There really aren't that many sky enemies.
Water Lizalfos = Just a Blue Lizalfos with a Water Element.
- Dark Lizalfos = Just Black Lizalfos with a Shadow Element.
- Twilit Lizalfos = Just a Silver Lizalfos with a Twilight Element.
Peahats & Seahats = Another use for fan shields or korok fronds.
Bubbles (WW & BotW) = Maybe when you beat a Stal enemy, their skull has a chance to become a Bubble? It'd be interesting if there were different kinds based on the Stal enemy it came from & if the stronger Stal had stronger Bubbles. Like the Malice Skulls from BotW. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them.
Redeads (OoT & TP) = The screaming bastards that grab you. Different from Gibdos. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them. Killing them with one releases the spirit trapped inside, leaving behind a Poe Soul.
Wall Master & Floor Master = Not as strong as the Gloom Hands, but can be terrifying in the right setting. Especially if you don't see their shadow coming. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them.
Platinum Enemies = Because a True Hero Mode would be cool.
Obsidian Talus (TotK: MM) =
Gleerok (MC) = A Gleeok that lives in lava. Has a shell of volcanic rock on its back.
- Demon King Gleeok (TotK: MM) =
Golden King Frox (TotK: MM) =
Other:
Ghosts = Not necessarily plot important ghosts either. Just ghosts of random people. Do a bit of old school stuff where you gotta help them be ready to move on. Maybe give Link an instrument so he can learn to play the Song of Healing.
Keatons (MM) = The Gentle Jesters & guardian spirits of the Sheikah. Known for asking riddles.
Minish (MC) = Crafty little helper elves of Hyrule. Can only be seen by children.
Yeti (TP) = They resemble Yeto & Yeta, but are an entire race of people. Isolationists that generally live in the deep mountains of Hebra. Generally quite friendly & hardy as a people, but tend to keep to themselves.
Twili (TP) = The descendants of a Sheikah faction that splintered off from the main tribe in an attempt to take over Hyrule much like the Yiga. However, unlike the Yiga, the Twili have become mostly peaceful since their banishment to the Twilight.
Mogmas (SS) = They were such fun characters. I kinda wish there'd been some female & kid Mogmas too. They'd have been neat as residents of the Depths with close ties to the Gorons. Like, they come across as being Italian mafia adjacent, but only in so much as the accent, the attitude, & family-oriented orginization. Sort of a "it takes a village" & "we take care of our own" type of mentality. Not in any way actually mafia though. They also love treasure & will risk life & limb for it, yet they quite easily give those same treasures away to those they consider friends. In this way, though they appear cowardly & greedy on the surface, they are actually brave & generous. It seems to be a cultural trait to give gifts, practically a love language.
Kikwi (SS) = Quite a shy, skittish race of people, but overall friendly & helpful.
Deku Scrubs (MM & MC) = A race of bush people. They are quite business-minded but tend to get a bit too enthusiastic regarding possible customers.

hi!! happy friday! maybe hawke/isabela with a florence + the machine lyrics prompt: 27 - I’m the same, I’m the same, I’m trying to change ?
Hello happy Friday! Thank you so much for the prompt <3 Oh it's time for my girls.
(If you’d like me to write you a da2 fic, send me a prompt from here!)
@dadrunkwriting
Pairing: f!Hawke/Isabela
Characters: Marian Hawke, Isabela
Tags: old women in love, dysfunctional relationships, 'it's complicated' on dragonbook, canon-typical violence
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
"Blood and ashes, my knee." Hawke swears as her leg buckles, but Isabela is already there, chest warm and scraping past her face as she neatly eviscerates the bandit on his way to gut her. Blood sprays warm and salty into Hawke's mouth, and she scowls whilst Isabela takes a moment to massage her own wrist. "You'd think you might have become a slightly tidier killer in the last three decades."
Isabela scoffs and doesn't look at her, whirling to meet their next assailant. "Where's the fun in that?"
Hawke's frown deepens as she pushes herself up, pressing the heel of her palm into the meat of her thigh for leverage. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Despite the fact she's visibly out of breath, Isabela makes a point to huff a sigh in Hawke's direction before flicking a knife at an archer twenty feet away. The ease of the action is belied by the way she compulsively flexes her fingers, after, lips pursing as she rubs her knuckles. "It doesn't mean anything, Hawke, it was just a stupid joke."
Hawke puts both hands on the head of the next attacker and boils him alive just to feel something, her palms searing with the heat of it, hot enough to bubble with a blistering burn. Isabela frowns, folding her weather-beaten face into a map of sunbright wrinkles like a treasure map.
It takes seconds for Isabela to meet her, but in that time she's already tugged a poultice from her belt and unfolded the cloth bundle, pressing the clay-like, cool herb mixture over Hawke's palm. Hawke grits her teeth to hide her relief, but judging by the way the lines around Isabela's mouth tighten, she doesn't buy it.
"You don't think I'm fun any more." Marian accuses.
Isabela rolls her eyes. "No, I think you're old -"
"You're old!"
"And no less foolhardy." Isabela finishes, as if Hawke hadn't interrupted. Her steel-grey curls blow in the wind like waves on an angry sea. She finishes wrapping a linen cloth around Hawke's ruined palms and steps back. In the direction of her mount - and past it, the blue promise of the ocean. It's less than a day's ride from here. Hawke had run into her less than a day ago.
As she so often does, Hawke speaks without thinking. "You can't just -"
"What?" Isabela asks, and her brown eyes flash in the waning daylight like fire. "I can't what, Marian?"
The words sour and die in Hawke's throat. Something else comes out instead. "I only just found you again."
Isabela's mouth tightens, and she turns her head away. She has far less laugh lines than Hawke these days, the skin around the corners of her eyes almost as taut and soft as it ever was. "I know."
Isabela is not quite as quick to climb on her horse as she once was, but Hawke is slower too, and by the time she thinks to move, Isabela is riding down the sand-strewn path toward the cliffs. Briefly, Hawke entertains chasing her; getting on her own mare and making her stay.
But age has, if not made Hawke wise, certainly made her less likely to keep making the same mistakes. Besides, the ache in her knee is splintering, and the pain in her hands is beginning to overcome the wild rush of adrenaline. So she stoops, growling at her stiff shoulders, and begins searching the corpses.
By the time she finds Isabela's bandana, folded neatly into one of the dead men's stiff fingers around a piece of parchment, evening is stretching her long dusky fingers across the golden land. Hawke stands, cracks her back, and kicks a log a little further into the fire.
Then she unfolds the salt stained paper, brushing her fingertips over the soft texture of it. Isabela's writing is scrawled across the page in brown ink.
Antiva City. Cloudreach.
Hawke stares at it for a moment, committing it to memory. Then she drops the page into the campfire and reaches for the flask of whiskey in her vest. When she drinks, she drinks deeply, looking out at the sea. She thinks she can make out a galleon, lurching toward the line where the tide meets the horizon.
But then again, her eyes aren't what they used to be.

Cento
I dreamt of absolution one night. A deep sleep’s vindicating fantasy of breaking the shackles that humanity locks. A human cannot do what a hawk can -- not physically, not spiritually. Of course a human cannot fly. But a human also cannot hunt. It cannot kill. It cannot yield to the animal urge within. It cannot truly be free. It must confine its deepest urges -- those urges everyone has. That’s what I always thought, at least. I thought that because I thought I was human.
I soared above the dusky orange desert landscape. I had a purpose in this dream, I knew, and somewhere to be, but I couldn’t see any necessity with the sun in my eyes. In some ways I knew this was a dream, and that my being a bird was not my waking state. It was an opportunity. I had longed to hunt my whole life. Was I really going to ignore this chance?
I saw a large grey rodent below. Upon waking up I researched and found out it was probably a California ground squirrel, the southernmost extent of which just barely overlaps with the range of Harris's hawks. But in my dream I was just an animal, and my prey was just an animal too. I can never replicate the feeling of catching it, this I know. But it was like liberation. Even in my dream animal brain, I knew this was something I had wanted through my whole life -- a fantasy that aches the way one only can when you know it can never come to pass. The images were detailed. My beak was a part of my body. Clumps of fur thrown to the side. Grey and scarlet. My senses are often vivid in my dreams. The sense of taste is no exception.
I woke up feeling like my human form, my vestibular sense, and my mundane life were mirrored 180 degrees in Photoshop.
I dreamt of absolution one night. A sleepless night’s vindicating fantasy of breaking the shackles that humanity locks. A human cannot do what a wolverine can.
We had been moving furniture from a storage unit to the new house all night and I was exhausted. Then the shift. Suddenly I was alert and so intense. Deer were out and about in the fading light. Images flashed in my head of chasing after them and bringing them down in the woods -- tearing into them. I was almost feverish. I could feel their hot flesh, bones of the neck snapping in my teeth, so brilliantly, redly vivid in my head like it was a waking dream. My temples were pounding. I stopped being able to follow the conversation. I had stopped understanding spoken human language. I stood in the grass and stared into the dark treeline. I had sharp teeth and tearing claws and I wanted to use them. To submit to the animal drive. To disappear into the green and black and song of the night, that rising swirl of music and color and scent that whirls and shapes together in the mind into one sublime chromasonic painting.
I awoke by falling asleep, letting the wolverine disappear into the whispering light of the sturgeon supermoon. I had no dreams that night. Only silent dark.
A human cannot yield to the animal within. It does not need to. It has none. But I am not human. I do need to. I do not have an animal deep inside that wants: I am the animal, I am the thing who wants, I am the beast who must confine itself. When I was younger I felt grotesque. I was too many species, none of them Homo sapiens. I didn’t know how it was possible, only that it had to be. I felt like Mary Shelley’s classic monster. I read books about mice, and rabbits, and bats, and they all told me I was a hideous thing for the urges I had -- that predators like me were evil. Not simply bowing to the blueprint that evolution wrote in their DNA. And I knew that’s what I was. Before I knew anything else, before I knew the word therian, before I knew that sometimes something that appears human on the outside can be something else internally, I knew I was a carnivore.
We realize what we are when we're young, don't we? We can tell we’re not human. We see the way we’re talked about in the children’s books we read. We know we’re not human because we internalize it. We feel hurt by it. And we cannot explain why. We don’t have the language. I didn’t know there were others -- I thought it was just me. I said I was “part animal.” I tried to explain how many animals I was. When I got too old to play pretend, I got quiet. I knew I wasn’t supposed to talk about it, but it couldn’t stop me from feeling it.
When I was younger I felt alone and I felt broken. Broken into too many pieces. Now things are different.
I soar above the dusky orange desert. I stalk through snow-laden pines. I dive into turbulent water. I swoop through ocean currents. I am the inconstant of form. I am the sharp of tooth. I am the keen of eye. I am the hunters. I am the monster named Cento. I am the creature known as Many.
Sonne's Edit:
What animal(s) do you want me to say you are on the website @stillflight? Also, thanks for the submission ^_^

Cento
908 words, an essay on instincts, dreams, and polytherianthropy.

Story time: Last year I posted a picture of this particular crow and explained the problem of the white feathers that are probably caused by malnutrition (https://kavohh707.tumblr.com/post/700927638761603072/this-young-crow-has-some-white-feather-in-its). Here is a little story about that crow.
This crow is a young crow that hatched last year in the summer and I have been giving treats to the parents for some years. They live close by the lake and park that are my most used spots for walking and taking pictures and I watched the young family quite a lot. There were two chicks:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in the summer only one of the chicks was left, which is quite sad, but not unusual for crows. Crow parents are very attentive parents but life is full of danger for young birds and there are buzzards and hawks in the area.
For the rest of the year I watched the two parent birds and their remaining youngster and brought them treats, which let to the young one starting to be quite daring and coming closer all the time (https://kavohh707.tumblr.com/post/699574518457548800/today-i-sat-in-my-usual-park-and-the-crows) and in the end taking food out of my hand (under the watchful eyes of both parents) /https://kavohh707.tumblr.com/post/705196021185200128/highlights-of-my-bird-year-the-eight-and-final).
The young crow was so curious and daring, it even stole peanuts from their parents (https://kavohh707.tumblr.com/post/706636573786161152/peanut-thief)
I saw the young one the last time on New Year’s eve and then in January the crow was not there anymore, only the two adult birds. Of course I thought, something bad must have happened. Here people can buy private fireworks for New Year’s Eve and since it was forbidding during the pandemic there was an awful lot of fireworks this time and maybe something happened.
And then a week ago I came across this bird on the other side of the lake.
Tumblr media
As you can see it has white feathers in their wings as well and they just started to get new feathers around the eyes (the white there are the sheaths which are around the new feathers). But I wasn’t sure that was “my” crow, they didn’t seem to know me and looked a bit bigger. And it would be highly unusual for such a young crow to leave its parents. Crows are very social and their kids stay at least until the parents start nesting again and sometimes the kids even help feeding the next generation.
Flash to today, I was quite late for my walk, but the two parent crows were there and immediately swooped in to get some treats. They always fly over me with only a few centimeters between us and land directly in front of me and look at me expectantly. So I gave them some cat food and walked a bit further (because there is a moorhen that recognizes me as well and gets some oatmeal). And I looked back and there was “my” crow. I immediately walked back, wanting to great the crow and give them some treats as well, but they were so shy, staying on the higher branches of the trees. Eventually it flew further away and I noticed that it wasn’t flying very well. I followed with the parents following me, but again the youngster was staying in the high branches. I gave some treats to the parents and watched as they flew to their kid and the young crow behaved like a fledgling, flapping with the wings and begging. And with success, the parents fed them. It was already dusky so I couldn’t get a good picture or a good look, but the crow looked a bit disheveled. Therefore, I am quite sure that the other bird with white feathers is indeed a different bird.
So, I am glad that my young crow is still alive, but also sad, because something terrible must have happened for the crow to change from the curious and daring bird I have known last year to the shy one I encountered today. I just hope they will be okay. At least the parents seem to take good care of their kid.
