Top 10 Anime of the Decade (incl. Winter Anime 2020)

Minna-san, akemashiteomedetōgozaimasu (Happy New Year)! It’s been awhile...sorry T^T. Life has been absolutely INSANE since the last time I posted, which was...omg September. OwO I honestly did not watch a lot of anime because real life has been so crazy. BUT that doesn’t mean I didn’t watch ANY anime. 

I was originally just going to post my annual Winter Anime Season post but after watching Joey: The Anime Man’s “The ULTIMATE Top 10 Anime of the Decade List” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqY25glHPxE) I wanted to look back and reflect on some of my favorite anime of the decade and share them with you guys as well. Like Joey I will also include some honorable mentions in the list. Without further ado, here are some of my favorite anime from this decade:

2010

Durarara!!

This was one of the first few shows that @perfectlynorm first recommended for me to watch when he and I reconnected back in 2015. I didn’t watch this show back when it first aired, but I really wish I did. The storytelling really stood out to me and I loved how all of the characters’ stories interconnected with each other. The seasons that came out later in 2015-2016 were great as well, but this first season was by far the best. 

Honorable Mentions:

- Kaichou wa Maid-Sama! (still one of the best romance/comedy anime to this day...I NEED A SEASON 2!!!)

- Shugo Chara (technically it aired years before 2010 but it’s one of the first few shows I got into during that year)

- Kimi ni Todoke (a slow burner but it’s still one of the few romance anime I go back to from time to time)

2011

Fate/Zero

Again, this is another show that @perfectlynorm recommended back when I really started to become the filthy weeb that I still am. This was also the first show that introduced me to the greatness of ufotable’s animation. Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works was amazing, but this show really blew my mind. The animation, the story, and the characters were top tier amongst the shows I watched at the time. This is a show I could recommend to new anime fans. 

Honorable Mentions:

- Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 1000% (this show unlocked my love for idol anime, a very memorable part of my teenage years)

- Sekaiichi Hatsukoi (still one of the best Boys Love/Yaoi anime I’ve ever watched...still waiting for the day he officially falls in love with him ugh)

- No.6 (another @perfectlynorm​ recommendation...that ending still hurts T^T)

2012

Kuroko no Basket

One of my male high school friends recommended this to me...I wonder if he new that he was cursing me at the time. This show was my introduction to the sports genre in anime. To this day, this show is still one of my favorite sports anime. Yes, looking back on it now parts of this show are extremely unrealistic and is mainly loved by fujoshis, but if I were to introduce any new anime fan to the sports genre, this would be the first show on my recommendation list. 

Honorable Mentions:

- Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic (I started this show for the voice actors, I stayed for the story and characters, 10/10 would watch again)

- Sukitte Ii na yo. (another great romance anime that really builds the relationship between the two main couple...without holding out the kiss until the last episode)

- Kamisama Hajimemashita (loved the anime and the manga...I was sad to see it end and that the anime was rushed, but it’s another romance anime I could watch again)

2013

Attack on Titan

Oh wow, @perfectlynorm​ recommendation lol. At the time, I would not have watched this on my own free will since I was (still am) weak to blood and gore. However, when I first watched this...I pretty much binged the entire first season within a week. I still remember the thrill and heart-pounding excitement I felt from watching each episode. I still have a lot of episodes to catch up on before the FINAL season (omg) comes out next fall, but I am excited nonetheless.

Honorable Mentions:

- Free! (ugh the fujoshi bait was so real in this show, but I LOVED it)

- Kuroko no Basket 2 (I was soooo hyped when I was watching this show, even while I would wait for each new episode during my Saturday ballet classes)

- Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 2000% (imo, the BEST Utapri season)

2014

Free!: Eternal Summer

At this time of my life, I just graduated from high school and was about to start the next big chapter of my life: college. This show really spoke to me back then because, like the characters, I was scared and uneasy for what happens after high school. I especially related to Haru’s uncertainty for the future and unwillingness to change. But as I followed his journey throughout the season I eventually felt ready to take the next step towards my future along with him. 

Honorable Mentions:

- Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (I DIED while watching this show, it provided so many laughs that I would recommend this to anyone)

- Akatsuki no Yona (love, love, love Yona and her harem of strong ikemen...I still feel proud that @lunastories​ absolutely FELL for this show)

- Haikyuu!! (one of the best sports anime EVER...I’m so so sad it’s ending soon)

2015

Kuroko no Basket 3

It was very difficult to choose a favorite anime for this year, but when I thought about what show I felt the most emotions from start to finish, I picked the final season of KnB. I was reading the manga while it was still being serialized so nothing in the show came as a surprise plot-wise, but to watch this show from the very beginning to the very end made me very emotional...until Last Game became a thing (god it still hurts T^T). 

Honorable Mentions:

- Ore Monogatari! (this has to be my FAVORITE romance anime, it broke so many romance anime stereotypes and i could watch it again and again)

- Haikyuu!! 2 (it’s haikyuu, nuff said)

- One Punch Man (still haven’t watched season 2, but omg I LOVED season 1, I still remember how much my friends and I laughed for each episode)

2016

Yuri!!! on Ice

*deep breaths* AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ok. This show, as embarrassing as it is to admit, MADE 2016 for me. Like so many fujoshis and fudanshis, I ate this show up and awaited week after week for each new episode to air. I know there are so many criticisms about this show, but f**k the haters. For me, and for others, this show changed what anime could do: normalize a same sex couple without fetishizing it. 

Honorable Mentions:

- ERASED (a GREAT mystery anime, that brings a lot of feels and thrills 10/10)

- Boku no Hero Academia (omg loved it, scroll down for more of my thoughts about this show)

- Kiss Him, Not Me! (this is the anime for fujoshis, watch if you are or think you are one, trust me)

2017

Boku no Hero Academia 2

I picked up the first season of this series before the summer 2017 anime season because of all the hype about it, and omg I was so excited for the second season. I eventually got all of my anime friends to watch it and they got so into it that we would do our first group cosplay together for the show at AX a year later. This show really made 2017 for me and I am very happy it is still so loved to this day...now I just need to start season 4 hehehe. 

Honorable Mentions:

- Hitorijime My Hero (one of my fav Boys Love/Yaoi anime cuz the main couple does not bang for every episode and actually TALK lol)

- Tsuki ga Kirei (a romance anime that i think accurately portrays an awkward, but sweet middle school romance)

- Recovery of an MMO Junkie (another fav romance anime, the main couple are absolute cinnamon rolls please please watch it)

2018

Banana Fish

The ending of this show still breaks my heart, but this show was a huge part of 2018 for me. At first, the show’s brutal and violent themes startled me and prevented me from watching it when it first aired, but when @perfectlynorm​ convinced @passionateflame​ and I to watch this after AX 2018, I was blessed and cursed at the same time. Ash and Eiji’s strong emotional connection was what warmed and broke my heart at the same time. Rest in peace...my heart.

Honorable Mentions:

- IDOLISH7 (an idol anime that beats UtaPri to death...excited for season 2 in 2020!!!)

- Gakuen Babysitters (not only gives me endless amounts of feels and warm fuzzies, but also reminds me why i love working with kids)

- Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (THE show for otaku)

2019

Fruits Basket

Although 2019 was probably the year I watched the least amount of anime, Fruits Basket was my favorite anime of the year. It was hard to pick my favorite and to narrow down the honorable mentions, but this anime was my most anticipated show of the year. I had high expectations going into it since the original anime was a huge part of my teen years, and I was definitely not disappointed. I’m so excited for the upcoming second season in 2020!!!

Honorable Mentions:

(Edit: ok I cheated by adding 4 but all of these shows were AWESOME!)

- Dororo (one of the great surprises of 2019, 10/10 would watch again)

- Demon Slayer (jumped on the bandwagon after AX and OMG I’m so glad I did)

- Dr. Stone (SURPRISE another @perfectlynorm​ recommendation...LOVED IT)

- Beastars (...I’m not a furry...but Legosi is best boy)

YES!!! My crow babies are back after a FOUR YEAR hiatus!!!

AND that concludes my top 10 anime of the decade list. I do not think my taste in anime has changed too much over the years, but within this past year I have come to be genuinely and pleasantly surprised over anime that I never would have picked up 10 years ago. So I guess I want to approach anime with a more open mind in 2020. 

I only plan to watch Haikyuu for this winter season because I am going to be busy with student teaching and finishing off my last semester in the teacher credential program at my school. But things might change...

Anyway, thank you so much for reading this MONSTER of a list if you made it to the end. Let me know what you guys think. What were you some of your favorite anime this decade? MR. ROPER

March 22, 2020 

OK so JR is a weenie and obvs never turned out to be anything bc I made it a much bigger deal in my head than it actually was soooo... 

JR was in August/September. I think him ghosting me hurt so much bc 1. it was my first time being ghosted and that sucks and 2. I wasn't super busy at work and I like to be busy at work bc it’s a distraction from my shitty social life. 

End of September started to pick up which led into a rollercoaster of shows that eventually led into LDI. 

Volt worked on Clay Paky, Ayrton and Shim and I helped design the GLP booth last year. I had to help draft both Clay Paky and GLP, along with being a tech for Ayrton so it was a pretty busy time. Max’s mentor, Scot, flew into LA to help prep Clay Paky before it got sent to Vegas. Scot is definitely an older stage hand stuck in his old stage hand ways so it was very interesting working with him. At the end of the week we all head out to Vegas to start the load in at the convention center. 

MONDAY

We get to LVCC and are ready to start the day! Martin, Max and I are on Ayrton booth. We have a union crew working with us (about 8 or 9 people) so it was one of those gigs where we just point and they do. I start introducing myself to the crew and a there’s one guy that comes up to me an introduces himself as Scot. I thought it was so funny bc of Scot on Clay Paky and what do ya know the Scot on our booth is his son! He was very attractive and as soon as I set eyes on him I knew he was the one (I made a deal with Martin that I was going to hook up with someone during this trip LOL). 

We started chatting while working and he is very much a ditz, but I really didn't care. He told me about the whiskey he likes to drink, the troubles that he had in the past year, but the progress he’s made in the past few months. 

TUESDAY

We definitely talked a lot more this day and we went to lunch with him and his dad. Scot Sr. made a comment about his sons strong arms and Martin and I almost LOST IT. Later that day he came up to me and asked if I wanted to hang out later that night and also asked for my number. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE SO I gladly gave him my number and texted him a few hours later once our team was done onsite. Martin and I went to dinner after and I was freaking out bc I was super excited to go on my first real date. Unfortunately, Scot “fell asleep” and ended up texting me later that night and I didn't want to seem too eager so I ignored the message until the next morning

WEDNESDAY

I wasn't expecting Scot to come back to work on Wednesday because everyone else on the crew was cut, but he came back and was working in a lift most of the day so I didn't really get to talk to him. He ended up leaving before we did so I thought that I missed my shot sealing the deal with him BUT at the end of the night Max said we were going to dinner with Scot and here I am thinking it’s dad Scot but it was my Scot! We went to Lotus of Siam and he was being very flirtatious and made sure that we were next to each other at the bar and while we had dinner. While we were eating he texted and asked if I had my own room. BOOM. Trying very hard to keep my poker face, I texted back yes and he asked if I wanted to smoke before going out and grabbing another drink. I agreed and when we got back to our hotel we went up to my room and I changed and we smoked a bit. 

We went back downstairs to meet the guys for another drink and I could start to feel the alcohol doing its magic. He ended up chatting to these girls next to us so again I felt like I lost my shot, but he was just making small talk and being a social person. I went to the restroom and the alcohol was making me REAL CONFIDENT so I asked if he wanted to go back upstairs and smoke one more time before he left. We ended up leaving the bar and going up to my room and as I gazed out the window looking at the strip, he comes behind me and I AM LOSING IT. Up until this night it had been 4+ years since I had sex and I was really afraid that I wasn't going to be good bc I could tell he was definitely experienced. 

He was so kind, so sweet and so FUCKING HOT the entire time making sure that I was pleasured first and my god it was mind blowing. He left after the deed was done and I had a very good nights sleep. 

THURSDAY 

I told everyone of my girlfriends about this boy (and Martin) and was really amped to see him again. I thought if I texted him that night it would be too soon so I just went on with my day.

FRIDAY 

I really wanted to see him again so I decided to text him and ask if he had any plans that night. He said he didn't and I told him Martin and I had planned to go to the 4Wall party that night so I asked if he wanted to meet us there. He ended up meeting me there about 10 minutes after we got there so we got some drinks and I introduced him to Cynthia, Carolyn and Stephanie. We danced for a bit, played some Mario Kart, talked to Phill and the Luna Lux boys for much longer than I wanted to and then we left.

We ended up going to meet a few of his friends at some local dive bar and I start chatting it up with one of his friends as he's talking to another. After an hour we start heading back to my room and we’re chatting about his place and how I’ve always wanted to learn how to drive stick so he said he would teach me the following day ;-) The deed is done again and this time he stays the night and he leaves the next morning and tells me I’ll see him later. I think I texted him to hang out later that night (SATURDAY) or I was waiting for him to text me but either way we didn't see each other again until Sunday. 

MONDAY

Scot only helped load out Sunday because he was offered another gig to work on Monday. As we’re finishing up load out Monday night it was just me and Scot Sr. waiting for the other volt guys to finish loading a truck. Me not wanting to sit in awkward silence, asked him what his plans are for Thanksgiving. He tells me, “Oh well usually the whole family comes over to our house for a big celebration, but Scotty and HIS WIFE are having problems so she probably won't be there”. I am in shock. Did he just say Scot’s WIFE. THIS GUY IS FUCKING MARRIED?!?! I had no idea what to do. I felt so sick in my stomach and wanted to scream and cry and wanted to be nowhere near that man at the moment (not that it was his fault but he was related to Scot and kept talking about how great his kids are HAHAHAHA). As soon as Martin came back I told him what happened and he was equally as pissed as I was. It was a very emotional plane ride home and I had no idea if I should text him and demand an explanation or just not tell him? It was a really rough time because I had finally opened up to a person (even if it was just for sex) and then this shit happens. 

Okay no bad decisions were made but FLASH FORWARD ONE WEEK LATER we are de-prepping LDI and I get a text from him. I have no idea how to respond so I have my coworker do it for me. 

He says that he is no longer with his wife and that they're divorced. We continue chatting for a bit but the conversation doesn't really go anywhere. He sends me a little happy thanksgiving text and then a happy December text and then I go back to my normal life. 

JANUARY

I’m finishing up a class at OTF and I grab my phone and see a text from Mr. Roper. It’s a sunset at Fashion Island and I’m not entirely sure how to respond to that. First I have to look up where fashion island is and then I decided to say, “Wow, that's beautiful! Happy 2020!” He then goes on to try and continue the conversation despite my efforts of answering his texts and not following up with more questions. He tells me he’s in Newport Beach for a few days and that we should link up (I kind of figured this out earlier bc I googled fashion island lol). I agree and we settle for a Wednesday night after I get off of work. 

I know what I’m getting myself into. I know I’m driving over just to get laid. As much as I hate him for what he put me through I also wanted to get answers and really hear the story about what happened. 

I end up meeting him and his aunt at a bar in Newport and we chat it up for a bit. He asks me how I’m doing and I say that I’m stressed out about work as usual. His aunt is really funny and I could tell she likes to party. We end up going back to her place and she has this BEAUTIFUL home right on the beach. Her backyard is the mother fucking beach and I was so shocked. He gives me a tour and we walk along the beach for a bit. I have to say it was very cute! We end up smoking with his aunt and then getting me food because I hadn't eaten all day. We start actually conversing about some interesting topics like past roommates he’s had which led to the wife chat. 

I realized that I didn't really care what happened as long as he could show me proof that they were over and he did. We went back to his aunt’s house (and he also opened the car door for me which I was very shocked about) and snuggled up outside on her porch. We talked about traveling to Thailand and his business (which I still have no idea what his side hustle is) and then he texted one if his friends a picture of us and said he's is having a wonderful night with a beautiful woman. UGH SO CHEESY BUT SO CUTE. Also, I thrive on cheesy so this was a plus. We start making out and things get a bit heated so we moved up to the bedroom. I don't know if it’s because I felt more comfortable around him or more confident bc I had been listening to a sex podcast on the way over there DON’T JUDGE ME ANN, but that night felt so much more intimate than the other times that were just hot as fuck. He really wanted me to stay the night, but I couldn't bc I was still living in Azusa and had to get home so I could get ready for work the next morning. I did take a power nap cuddled in his arms and left around 3 and got home around 4. When I left he was asleep, but right as I got home I got a phone call from him making sure I got home safe and to also tell me that I was crazy for leaving so late. 

He text me the next morning to check in and then that was it for a bit. I texted him the week after saying how much fun I had and he said that we would be in town the following week! 

THE FOLLOWING WEEK 

THIS STORY IS ALMOST OVER I PROMISE 

Ray and I are at the shop and I know that Scot is supposed to be in town that day. He said that he might need a place to stay bc he was going to a convention in Burbank so it worked out perfectly bc I had just moved to my new apartment with Cynthia. As we’re working I get a text from him asking if I’m at the shop. I ignore it because I’m working and then I get a phone call from him. I let it go to voicemail but then I feel like an ass and call him right back. He asks me if I'm at the shop and I say yes so he says great, I’m outside. I’m v confused bc I knew he was in town, but I expected him to be at his convention or whatever NOT AT MY PLACE OF WORK. He comes in and he looks SO MOTHER FUCKING  ATTRACTIVE and says hi to Ray and then I take him over to the new shop bc more guys that he knows are over there. I end up leaving him over there (bitch move I know) and then he comes back over to where I was to say bye. I ask if I’ll see him later and he said yeah just to let him know. I end up texting him as I’m leaving work and get no response. A few hours go by and he finally responds saying that he can’t hang out and has to go back to Vegas right away. I’m a but upset, but I think he was also upset at me for not spending time at the shop with him BUT HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO REACT WHEN YOU SHOW UP RANDOMLY AT MY PLACE OF WORK?!??!

PRESENT DAY

I was very thrown off by the whole situation and haven't really talked to him since, but I have been actively checking his socials bc now we’re in quarantine and I reeeeeallllyyyy want to text him but it’s not like we can do or go anywhere bc lockdown so yeah. He is very hot and nice and amazing in bed, but he is definitely not dating material but I still for the life of me cannot get him out of my head. 

I think this goes back to the whole Jay thing because when I have nothing to distract me like work, I think I tend to make up situations in my head when there is nothing else going on in my life. Quarantine = no job = nothing to think about 

Is it wrong to text him and be like “hey hope you're doing okay and staying safe during this quarantine” or st along that line? OR should I do what my head is telling me to do which is nothing bc if he wanted to talk to you he would have texted?!?!

Animals, Apparently, and Beautiful: ax ех D4 24739 SUPER friendly Boy. Soooo happy, playful and energetic. Rex adores people and getsp. super wiggly and waggy when you interact with him. He LOVES to cuddle and thanks you with lots of kisses. 4 yrs old, 65 lbs Waiting on Love @ Brooklyn ACC TO BE KILLED 6/1/19 Six times Rex has been in and out of the shelter. His owner comes back for him and then a bit later he is back! And through it all, Rex has remained a staff favorite - FRIENDLY, AFFECTIONATE and SO HAPPY! <3 A volunteer writes: There's friendly and then there's FRIENDLY! Rex squarely belongs in the latter category. He just adores people and gets super-wiggly and waggly when you interact with him. He thanks you with lots of face kisses, which are pretty hard to resist. He's sooooo happy and playful and has lots of energy. Rex finds everything around him to be of interest - the birds flying above, the dog being walked across the street, the stray plastic bag floating in the wind - it all fascinates him! Rex occasionally gets too focused on something, but it's very easy to distract him - just click your tongue or call to him and he'll immediately look right up at you. Better yet, give him a treat and he'll completely forget what had so absorbed him just a minute ago. Rex can also get a bit overexcited when you interact with him (he's just so playful!), but here too it's very easy to refocus his energy. When I gave him a treat, he immediately settled down and we continued our walk. If you'd like to meet this super-friendly, happy, high-energy boy, come on down to the Brooklyn ACC shelter where he's awaiting his forever home. Short volunteers note June 2018 Rex has been officially coined as "Sexy Rexy." He is truly beautiful. All the staff love him. He saw one of his favorites in the hall and literally did a hop skip in the air. When I had Rex tethered outside to get pics, I was taking pics of another dog and he got so jealous. He really is a ladies man, loves to cuddle, but he's sort of wild when he does it. He was dancing for a treat today. <3 A volunteer wrrote in 2014: Rex is a big puppy who deserves well his name. Indeed, he is royal looking and eye catching. Although his coat has the most beautiful markings, his pale greenish yellowish eyes are what makes Rex so attractive. Rex is leashed easily. He salutes on the way every single dog in his ward.He does not respond to a pooch barking at him. In the street, he eliminates right away as we exit the building, pulls a little , chases the pigeons and aims toward other dogs, curious to see them. His tail his high like it is most of the time. Free in a pen, Rex is one boisterous boy. Let’s not forget that despite his big size, Rex is ONLY…8 month old…He loves to play ball, jumps in the air to catch it or runs after it. He retrieves at my feet. Rex loves treats and will sit on command for them. He does not always listen and orders have to be repeated. Sounds familiar? Like a kid… Rex can be petted all over. He can be a little mouthy at times and jumpy. He tried once to go for the leash but a treat made him change his mind. Rex is a youngster we have at the Manhattan Care Center. He is a big boy, energetic and has a personality.. Like any puppy, he will need training to be on the same page as his new owner or family. His majesty Rex is all worth the investment that will be put into him. His owner comes back for him and then a bit later he is back! And through it all, Rex has remained a staff favorite - FRIENDLY, AFFECTIONATE and SO HAPPY! A volunteer writes: There's friendly and then there's FRIENDLY! Rex squarely belongs in the latter category. He just adores people and gets super-wiggly and waggly when you interact with him. He thanks you with lots of face kisses, which are pretty hard to resist. He's sooooo happy and playful and has lots of energy. Rex finds everything around him to be of interest - the birds flying above, the dog being walked across the street, the stray plastic bag floating in the wind - it all fascinates him! Rex occasionally gets too focused on something, but it's very easy to distract him - just click your tongue or call to him and he'll immediately look right up at you. Better yet, give him a treat and he'll completely forget what had so absorbed him just a minute ago. Rex can also get a bit overexcited when you interact with him (he's just so playful!), but here too it's very easy to refocus his energy. When I gave him a treat, he immediately settled down and we continued our walk. He really is a ladies man, loves to cuddle, but he's sort of wild when he does it. He was dancing for a treat today. <3 A volunteer wrrote in 2014: Rex is a big puppy who deserves well his name. Indeed, he is royal looking and eye catching. Although his coat has the most beautiful markings, his pale greenish yellowish eyes are what makes Rex so attractive. Rex is leashed easily. He salutes on the way every single dog in his ward.He does not respond to a pooch barking at him. In the street, he eliminates right away as we exit the building, pulls a little , chases the pigeons and aims toward other dogs, curious to see them. His tail his high like it is most of the time. Free in a pen, Rex is one boisterous boy. Let’s not forget that despite his big size, Rex is ONLY…8 month old…He loves to play ball, jumps in the air to catch it or runs after it. He retrieves at my feet. Rex loves treats and will sit on command for them. He does not always listen and orders have to be repeated. Sounds familiar? Like a kid… Rex can be petted all over.
