The Dom Luis I bridge in the city of Porto - Portugal.
In the wonderful city of Porto the famous Luis I Bridge is located pretty much in the centre of Porto (Unesco World Heritage Site). Video shot in March 2022 by WonderJourneys Music by: Scott Buckley - Castle In The Sky
Enjoy the anime / ghibli vibe of the scenery.
Some background: In 1879, Gustave Eiffel presented a project to construct a new bridge over the Douro, with a high single deck in order to facilitate ship navigation. This project was rejected due to dramatic growth of the urban population, which required a re-thinking of the limits of a single-deck platform.
A competition was initiated in November 1880, in order to construct a double-deck metal bridge, which included projects by Compagnie de Fives-Lille, Cail & C., Schneider & Co., Gustave Eiffel, Lecoq & Co., Société de Braine-le-Comte, Société des Batignolles (which submitted two ideas), Andrew Handyside & Co., Société de Construction de Willebroek (also two projects) and John Dixon. It was in January of the following year that deliberations by the committee supported the project of Société de Willebroek and provided better-carrying capacity.
On 21 November 1881, the public work was awarded to the Belgian Société de Willebroek, from Brussels, for 402 contos. It was to be administrated by Théophile Seyrig, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel and author of the project. Seyrig had worked on the D. Maria bridge with Eiffel, hence the resemblance of his new bridge to the D. Maria bridge. Construction began on the Ponte Luís I alongside the towers of an earlier railway suspension bridge, the Ponte Pênsil, which was disassembled.
By 26 May 1886, the first weight experiments began, with the transport of a 2,000 kilograms (4,400 lb) per metre. On 30 October construction of the main arch and upper deck were concluded, resulting in its inauguration the very next day.[2] On 1 November, a toll system began to operate under the administration of the winning company, that was equal to 4 reís per person. The following year the lower deck was inaugurated, completing the project. During its ceremonies, the bridge was blessed by Bishop D. Américo.
By the turn of the century (1908) electric carriages were installed in the city centre, extending to the bridge.

Fall Vacation Destinations
While summer vacations are a great way to enjoy the sun and heat of the summer months, fall vacations are all about a peaceful, cozy, and comforting experience. Autumn is a great time to see beautiful landscapes, interact with wildlife, and explore new outdoor destinations. As soon as I see the first leaf turn from green to yellow, I get a little obsessed with the idea of an amazing fall…

Day 1 Lisbon in 32,729 steps
Oh my! I am feeling weary after a big day of walking. I slow climbed into a hot bath when I returned at about 8.30pm.
The weather was not as cool as I anticipated, a lovely high of 17° and only a little sprinkle of rain at around 5pm.
I started the day at the hotel buffet and had my first Pastel de nata. It actually tasted quite good, but I do understand why the one I had later in the day at Manteigaria was award winning. It was served warm and the pastry was lighter and the filling creamier. It may have helped that I purchased a shot of Espinheira with it (it was basically "I'll have what she's having"!)
I first walked to the glamorous El Corte Inglés department store to see what the fuss might be about. I ended up using the WC and buying a bottle of water! I'm thinking the summer sales will be on when I return to Lisbon at the end of May and my suitcase might be a bit lighter.
I then headed up and down a few hills to a recommended cafe, Comoba, for a local latte (galão) before moving onto lunch at Time Out Market Lisboa for lunch. The codfish croquette was recommended at Croqueteria. It was the tastier of the three I had (cuttlefish with squid ink and tuna were the other two), with a side of sweet potato crisps, creamed spinach and a glass of rose for €12. I met Mary and Elaine from Kentucky (now retired, but former work colleagues) who were sitting beside me also trying to work out the process for ordering. They are on a short trip, river cruise up the Duoro River to Salamanca, Spain and return. Elaine totally got me when I mentioned my "gap" years, particularly the one sans men. And they reported they were very happily retired (although Elaine did say she was volunteering for 15 hours per week). They seemed to also keep themselves occupied with several short overseas holidays.
For the afternoon I'd pre-booked the 2.5+ hour Sandemans New Europe walking tour with Nuno (originally from the north of Portugal, he moved to Lisbon in 2012 to pursue acting). The itinerary included the central district of Bairro Alto and a visit to the oldest bookstore in the world (Bertrand), several cool views of Lisbon, including from the Santa Justa Elevator, a history lesson on the Great Earthquake of 1755 and the intriguing story of the peaceful Carnation Revolution and the end of the dictatorship on 24th April 1974 and lots of food recommendations.
I ended the evening with dinner at Sebastião, pre-booked on the Fork app. I ate a whole roasted octopus (the waiter assured me it was ok to eat everything) with sautéed turnip tops and sweet potato. It was a large meal and quite tasty (aside from a couple of gritty bits), served with a lovely glass of red he recommended that wasn't on the menu. The waiter also gave me a very basic Portugese language lesson, apparently it's mostly a nasal language and the words I have been using are all a bit wrong. Bring on those classes this week in Alvor.
My favourite human contact today was with Mary and Elaine from Kentucky.
Best food - definitely the Pastel de Nata at Confeitaria da Gloria.
Best beverage - the latte at Comoba.
Most interesting story - the Carnation Revolution and how recent that really was and Nuno's perspective that over the past 10 years "Portugal" is acknowledging and taking responsibility for all the wrong doings from the past and changing the language to describe this, eg instead of "slave trading" saying "human trafficking".

Porto or Lisbon - which one is better?
Today I bring you some basic information about these two cities in order to help you choose. Let's go!
Lisbon:
- You need around 3 days to explore the city and a couple of days more if you want to explore the places in the surroundings like Sintra, Óbidos or Cascais.
You need to use public transport/car to get to certain parts of the city because the distances can be long.
- The beaches near Lisbon have warmer
waters for swimming, especially in August and
September.
- Algarve, the part of Portugal famous for its beaches, is close to Lisbon.
Porto:
- Unlike Lisbon, in Porto all the main sights are within easy walking distance, so you don't need to use public transport/car.
- You can see Porto easily in 2 or 3 days.
- The beaches near Porto are huge and the
water in the ocean is cold, even in the summer. - From Porto you can visit Duoro Valley with its picturesque towns and discover some of the best wineries in the country.
Personally, the first time I visited Portugal, I enjoyed Porto more because Lisbon seemed big and chaotic, but during my second trip to Lisbon last spring, I completely fell in love with it. I hope the information above helps you to make up your mind if you can only visit one of them, but I definitely recommend exploring both because they have so much to offer!
Have you been to either of these cities? And if you have visited both, which one was your favourite?

Porto - 11th September 2023
We arrived back in Porto after travelling through a lock first thing in the morning. We walked from the boat to the Calem Cellar on the Gaia riverbank:
Tumblr media
We passed some traditional port barges on the River Douro which looked great either the medieval town of Porto in the background:
Tumblr media
We had an interesting tour of the Calem Cellar. Again the some of the barrels were huge:
Tumblr media
We were given some wonderful port to taste.
In the afternoon we were taken on a tour of Porto. In the main railway station we saw some amazing blue porcelain tiles illustrating the history and culture of Portugal.
Tumblr media
We visited the cathedral again and then set off on our own to visit the main plaza with the town hall:
Tumblr media
We went to see the Clerigos Church and Tower which was impressive:
Tumblr media
We passed some beautiful buildings in the medieval part of the city:
Tumblr media
We saw this book shop which had a massive queue of people with timed tickets waiting to enter. Apparently it is believed that this was part of the inspiration for the Harry Potter books as JK Rowling lived in Porto for a number of years:
Tumblr media
We walked down to the River Duoro to catch a ferry back to the Gaia side to walk to our boat. We got a great view of the Calem Cellar from the Porto dude of the river:
Tumblr media
And here is the view of the bridge from the riverbank while we waited for the ferry:

17.1.2024 Tordesillas

Kyle & Annie Portugal Honeymoon from US 5 Stars via Google Reviews “A Portugal Honeymoon To Remember My wife and I decided to go to Portugal for our honeymoon, and with only 3 weeks before our wedding to plan, we didn’t have any reservations or accommodations booked. We knew we wanted to surf and as we were putting together an itinerary we found António with ride351 and opted to call him for his local opinion before booking anything. We are so glad we did because his knowledge and expertise were just what we needed to help us put together our dream itinerary. He recommended places to stay, and things to not miss - including spending some time in the Duoro Valley, which was not something we had initially planned on and ended up being one of our favorite parts of the trip! Not only did he help us modify our trip for the better but he offered to book all accommodations, dinner reservations and set up surf lessons with Vitor (who was great!).
When we arrived to the Lisbon airport, Antonio was there waiting for us to help make our way through the car rental process without issue and told us how best to get up to Porto since that was our first night’s stay. He even brought us a package of pasteis de natas and waters for the 2-3 hour car ride! Every place we stayed had a bottle of champagne or wine waiting for us along with a special welcome or “congratulations” note from the hotel that Antonio had arranged all on his own. Each day he would send a text making sure things were going smoothly. He struck the perfect balance between too little and too much communication, wanting to give us our privacy but still ensuring we weren’t experiencing any problems.
My wife and I now can’t wait to get back to Portugal to see more of the beautiful country, do more surfing, and also spend more time with Antonio and Vitor. We simply can’t say enough good things about our experience with ride351 and how they helped turn our honeymoon into an experience we will never forget!” Join us ride351.com

Porto - Day 1
Sunday - 10/8
Our hotel includes a buffet breakfast
Tumblr media
The weather in Porto was sunny today hitting a high of 83 degrees— very similar to Lisbon weather. Hopefully the nice weather keeps up for the rest of our trip. I have been wearing shorts the whole time in Portugal, except for two nights in Lisbon when the temperature dropped down to about 70 degrees.
Below is a photo of our hotel, the NH Collection Porto Batalha. It used to be a post office.
Tumblr media
This morning we went on part 1 of a self-guided Rick Steves walking tour of Porto. This church was built in the first half of the 18th century on a mediaeval site. The tiles on the outside walls were added in 1932.
Tumblr media
Here are some sights we saw along the way. The left picture below are “Dancers for Euros” :-). There are a lot of street artists in Portugal looking for tips. Some of them are very talented. The picture on the right is a church.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is a picture of Porto city hall.
Tumblr media
Porto has the only McDonalds in the world where you will find soup and a chandelier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is major construction going on in the center of Porto as they are building a new metro line. Some of the main streets are torn up and one trolley line is using buses instead to avoid the construction mess.
Tumblr media
Along the way we stopped for a treat at Padaria Ribeiro, a pastry and bread shop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is a picture of Armazens Cunhad, a department store in Porto. It doesn’t appear to be as upscale as the El Corte Ingles department store we saw in Lisbon.
Tumblr media
Two church’s and a narrow building between them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lello Bookstore is considered the 3rd most beautiful bookstore in the world according to Lonely Planet. Rumor is that this bookstore inspired author J K Rollins to create Flourish and Blotts, the bookstore where Harry Potter buys his books before going to Hogwarts. We didn’t go inside because there was a long line and looked like it would take at least an hour in line.
Tumblr media
The picture below is of Clérigos Church and its 75 meter bell tower (Igreja e Torre dos Clérigos).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That concluded part 1 of our walking tour. We plan do part 2 another day. For lunch we brought packaged salads and ate them in the park. It was nice to get away from all the people, noise and congestion of the central Porto area we had been walking in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After lunch we decided to take a ride on the historic tram 18 to see more of Porto. We searched on the internet but could not find a map of the tram route. Same with when we tried to a find a bus route on a previous day. Our experience in Portugal is they sure don’t make it easy for tourists. Anyway we decided to follow the tracks to the end of the line, which wasn’t too far. It ended up being in front of Igreja e Torre dos Clérigos.
Tumblr media
We rode tram 18 from one end to the other end, which was the neighborhood For do Duoro. The best view of the river when going this direction on the tram is to sit on left side (single seat side) of the tram.
For do Duoro Is where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It’s like we went from Porto 1 to Porto 2. Totally different vibe in Porto 2. Less congestion and buildings are more modern. Slight ocean breeze. It is a more expensive area to live in Porto.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was so beautiful we decided to hike back along the river.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Real estate is not cheap in Porto, but seems less expensive than Lisbon. Here is a nice 1,240 square foot 3 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment with ocean views for €880,000.
Tumblr media
For dinner we both had Pregos (steak sandwiches) at Casa Da Companhia Restaurante.
Tumblr media
We did a lot of walking today… 23,500 steps which is the most we have walked on this trip in a single day. Our prior record was 22,900, which was the day we hiked out to Ponta da Piedade in Lagos.

Day 5 putting out the garbage!
I didn't have much planned today. Portimão market was my first stop. This is where I needed some Portugese as google translate didn't quite work for me at the cheese shop, trying to enquire about vintage cheddar, but thankfully aged was understood. I also just had to guess everything I bought wasn't going to break the bank as the pricing system was a tad confusing.
Aside from the cheese I purchased some bread, pastel de nata, veg, chicken breast and my first tin of sardines and had a yummy lunch with wine at the apartment. I will definitely go back for fresh fish, not sure I'm equipped to deal with whole fish. I nearly bought a whole chicken, but then cycled through how I would prepare it and store it and get it eaten with my various restaurant plans ;)
Next stop, The Bakery Garden. The owner saw my early message on FB and reached out to let me know about her cafe. She sounded like an Aussie, and so I assumed I might get a decent latte. But sadly no, a vegan cafe with no cows milk, which ordinarily is no problem, but the coffee was too hot and the milk not foamy. I won't be going back for the boston bun she offered to make me, or lamingtons, or anything, if I gave her enough notice. How did she know I grew up on boston buns - and no need to order one from a vegan cafe in Portugal when Dad can make them for me.
The challenge for today was to tackle the garbage scenario, fearing I had not separated everything into all the piles and would be caught out by a neighbour with nothing better to do than to monitor the bins! I disposed of the plastic bottles and glass bottles, they were easily identified. Strangely when I opened the lid to the glass bin, it was bottomless and all the glass was broken in a shallow well at the bottom. The third option was paper, whoops, maybe this is for all that toilet paper I've been flushing? And the last option where there were more bins looked like they were for undies!! I will take a picture of the signange tomorrow and let you be the judge! I did ask an older english dude outside the local supermarket and he told me just to look at the pictures, duh! Maybe he doesn't put out the garbage?
It was a bit windy today and after some wine at lunch I thought I might have a nap, but sleep evaded me, so I booked a few things, a tile painting class, lunch at a vineyard, a wine tour in Duoro when I head there and a couple of dates with women who responded to my FB posts. One of them is coming with me to the vineyard later in April. We haven't met yet, hopefully it's not an awkward first date!
I ended the day with Body Attack at the gym. Roberto was very rambunctious. He had the older women eating out of his hands. I think one of them was put out by my presence as she didn't hesitate to bump into me during the class and didn't care to apologise. Little did she know I'm having a gap year from Ricardos and I am no threat!
I've finished Emily in Paris, now watching The Gentemen, interesting drama. Looking forward to a big day in Lagos tomorrow.
