Alex Thompson at Axios:
Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump have become key players in the early planning for a second Trump administration's transition team, and would focus on vetting potential officials and staffers for ideology and loyalty, campaign aides and close allies to their father tell Axios. Why it matters: Neither brother would officially run Donald Trump's transition team, but they'd take a lead in making sure government jobs are filled by Republicans aligned with Trump's vision for the party, the sources said.
Don Jr.'s goal "is to keep the John Boltons of the world outside a second Trump administration," a person close to him told Axios, referring to Donald Trump's hawkish former national security adviser who wrote a bestselling book lambasting the former president.
The big picture: The brothers are stepping into the roles as their father is frustrated by other Republican groups such as the Heritage Foundation claiming they are leading the charge on scrutinizing the backgrounds of possible appointees.
The groups' aim has been to pre-vet potential contenders for Cabinet-level and lower staff positions to aid Donald Trump's desire to remake the government in his image — without the resistance he faced from career civil servants and some Republicans during his presidency.
Those efforts have included former Trump aides who could be in a future administration. Trump campaign advisers believe the groups can be helpful but have been infuriated as the Biden campaign has used the groups' policy papers to attack the campaign.
Last November, top Trump aides Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita said in a statement that "any personnel lists, policy agendas, or government plans published anywhere are merely suggestions. Policy recommendations from external allies are just that—recommendations."
Reality check: Even if they're annoyed, it will be hard for the Trump brothers or the campaign to be broadly effective without drafting off the outside groups' work.
Zoom in: This isn't the first time that Trump has deployed family members to key positions to ensure loyalty throughout the GOP.
After Trump took control of the Republican National Committee recently, Eric Trump's wife, Lara, became co-chair of the RNC.
@axios reports on Trump brothers Eric and Donald Jr. as "loyalty czars" for their dad's potential transition team in the event of their win in the November election by vetting appointees' loyalty to the MAGA cult's vision of the GOP.

Donald Trump Jr. has admitted that he personally signed one of the hush money checks now at the center of his father’s arrest on criminal charges. The former president’s son told right-wing network Newsmax that part of Mr. Trump’s indictment on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records refers to his own actions.
“That son is me. Like I said, clearly also not a campaign finance violation if it’s from his own trust, not to a campaign, not from the campaign, not from the funds raised from it,” he said.
“So, none of it actually makes any sense.”
In the criminal indictment unsealed on Tuesday, prosecutors allege that a check made out to Mr. Trump’s former “fixer” Michael Cohen was falsely recorded as a “retainer” in the Trump Organization’s business records.
The check was signed by former Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg – who is now in Riker’s Island on a fraud conviction – “and the Defendant’s son, as trustees”.
The son in question was not named in the charging documents but Don Jr. later confirmed it was him as he joins his father in railing against the charges. Don Jr. has not been accused of any wrongdoing in the criminal case and the payment itself is not illegal.
Instead, prosecutors allege that a crime was committed when this payment – and many others – to Cohen were falsely recorded in the Trump Organization’s business records. The crime then reaches the level of a felony when the falsified records were made while in commission of another crime.
According to Manhattan prosecutors, Mr. Trump and Cohen carried out a “catch and kill” scheme in the lead-up to the 2016 election. Cohen allegedly made hush money payments on Mr. Trump’s behalf to suppress negative information about the presidential candidate. The payments were allegedly made to silence individuals over alleged affairs he had with women.
Mr. Trump “repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election,” the charging documents read.
Three specific alleged affairs and hush money payments were mentioned in the charging documents – a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels, a $150,000 to former playboy model Karen McDougal and a $30,000 payment to a doorman at Trump Tower who claimed he had information that Mr. Trump had fathered a child with a woman while married to Melania Trump.
Mr. Trump then allegedly reimbursed Cohen but falsely recorded the payments as legal fees.
Back in 2019, Cohen testified before a House committee that Don Jr. signed some of the checks reimbursing him for the payment to Ms. Daniels. Cohen has already served jail time for his part in the hush money case and has now become prosecutor’s star witness in the case against Mr. Trump.
During Weisselberg’s trial last year, he testified that both of Mr. Trump’s adult sons, Don Jr. and Eric Trump, signed checks that he used to defraud authorities but insisted that no member of the Trump family played a part in his tax evasion scheme.
On Tuesday, Mr. Trump was charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in order to conceal illegal activity connected to his 2016 presidential campaign. Each of the 34 criminal charges relates to an individual entry in the Trump Organization’s business records.
Mr. Trump surrendered to Manhattan authorities on Tuesday afternoon and was officially arrested on the charges. He then appeared in court for his arraignment before Judge Juan Merchan – the same judge who sentenced the Trump Organization and its CFO last year. Cutting a glum figure, he defiantly pleaded not guilty to all the charges and has continued to lash out at the judge and Manhattan DA in the aftermath.

Noah Dowe and Pete Tsipis at MMFA:
Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight Sean Strickland recently described being transgender as a “mental fucking illness.” Now, right-wing media is cheering him on, joining a larger trend of right-wing media platforming UFC fighters and figures who spread hateful rhetoric and conspiracy theories.
During a pre-match press conference on January 18, Sean Strickland launched into an anti-trans rant after a reporter asked him about his history of bigoted anti-LGBTQ comments. Strickland described being transgender as “a mental fucking illness” and called the reporter asking the question “an infection” and “the enemy.” [Bloody Elbow, 1/20/24]
Strickland has a well-documented history of making bigoted and sexist remarks. The former UFC champion has said that “society should never accept” trans people, that “the collective man group” needs to “elect somebody who is gonna put women back in the kitchen,” and that he would have “failed as a man” if he reared a gay son. [Twitter/X, 12/27/21, 10/26/23, 6/28/23]
UFC President Dana White defended Strickland at the post-match press conference, saying, “If you get your feelings hurt that bad, you probably shouldn’t ask." He also said the fighter was “baited in that question.” Asked if he gives “a long leash” to fighters to say what they want, White responded, “I don’t fucking tell any other human being what to say, what to think. … Free speech, brother. People can say whatever they want and believe whatever they want.” [MMAJunkie, 1/21/24]
Right-wing media rush to the defense of UFC fighter Sean Strickland's bigoted anti-LGBTQ+ remarks.

Justin Horowitz at MMFA:
MAGA media figures are coping with former President Donald Trump’s ongoing criminal hush money trial in New York by attacking Judge Juan Merchan and his daughter, calling for Trump to be sent to prison in order to fundraise off his trial, and railing against Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.  The trial stems from allegations that Trump falsified records behind a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election to keep her from releasing information about a sexual encounter the two had in 2006.
MAGA media propagandists whine about Donald Trump's business record falsification trial.

Right-wingers seized on the mass shooting at a private Christian school in Nashville on Monday to push anti-trans rhetoric after authorities said the shooter, who was shot dead by police after killing three students and three adults, was transgender.
Far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) attacked transgender health care, asking on her congressional Twitter account: “How much hormones like testosterone and medications for mental illness was the transgender Nashville school shooter taking?”
Tumblr media
“Everyone can stop blaming guns now,” the extremist lawmaker added.
On her personal account, Greene — no stranger to pushing anti-trans talking points — wrote: “The female Nashville shooter identified as a man. So shouldn’t we just blame white men again?”
Tumblr media
Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of former President Donald Trump, suggested that “rather than talking about guns we should be talking about lunatics pushing their gender affirming bullshit on our kids?”
Tumblr media
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said that “if early reports are accurate that a trans shooter targeted a Christian school, there needs to be a lot of soul searching on the extreme left.”
“Giving in to these ideas isn’t compassion, it’s dangerous,” the first-year lawmaker added.
Tumblr media
In a second post, Vance pushed the “thoughts and prayers” line that is a favorite response of pro-gun conservatives to mass shootings.
Tumblr media
Charlie Kirk, the founder of the right-wing youth group Turning Point USA, suggested that “instead of banning ‘assault rifles’ we should ban gender affirming care for kids.”
Tumblr media
And Fox News commentator Tomi Lahren and former Trump White House aide Sebastian Gorka suggested the media would “bury” news about the shooting because of their gender identity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All but four of the 172 shooters identified in mass shootings since 1996 are men, according to The Violence Project.
Trans people are four times more likely than cisgender people to experience violent crimes, including rape and assault, the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law found in a 2021 study.
The number of trans people slain in the U.S. more than doubled from 2017 to 2021, when 59 trans people were killed in homicides, advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety found in an analysis.
