I am Sage's mother, better known as Nana. I adopted Sage after my son died when she was still a baby. She's been through six foster homes by then, but we loved her and she blossomed into a joyful, lively girl who made music and art.
Puberty began and COVID hit, and she was treated for depression and anxiety, at times very severe. Her teachers shared any concerns with me so her treatment could be adapted.
The transparency ended in August of 2021 when Sage started high school. She started a public high school and she told me that all the girls there were bi, trans, lesbian, emo and she wanted to wear boy's clothes and be emo. Because I saw it as just a phase, it was fine with me.
But at school, she told them something different: she was now a boy named Draco with male pronouns. Sage asked the school not to tell me, and they did not tell me even though I informed them of her mental health history and medication. If I had known, this would be a much different story.
She was terribly bullied. No one told me. But boys followed her, touched her, threatened violence and rape. Something happened in the boy's bathroom but for two days, the school told me nothing. They kept meeting with Sage alone and she became so distraught they called me to pick her up.
That evening, I found a hallpass labeled 'Draco' and Sage told me she was identifying as a boy, and that her counselor said she could use the boy's bathroom. She'd been jacked up against the wall by a group of boys. She was crying, terrified. I said just stay home, we'll figure it out. That was my last conversation with Sage for five months.
The night she ran, she thought, to a young friend she'd met online, she left a note saying she was scared of what would happen if she stayed. The sheriff, FBI, search dogs were called in. I dropped to my knees in prayer. Nine days later the FBI found her in Baltimore. My baby had been lured online, sex trafficked by DC then Maryland. She was locked in a room, drugged, gang raped and brutalized by countless men. It was night. The FBI told us to pick her up in Maryland the next morning.
We packed our cars with blankets and stuffed animals and arrived by 8 am, but we were told we couldn't see her, and were summoned before Judge Robert Kershaw late that afternoon. They didn't even tell Sage that we came for her. We finally entered the courtroom and Sage appears on a huge Zoom screen from a prison cell. She looks tiny and broken, and I cry out 'I love you Sage.' Sage responds 'I love you too, Nana.' But attorney Anisa Khan rebukes us. She is a 'he' and his name is 'Draco' not Sage. We were floored.
Khan accuses us of emotional and physical abuse, that we are misgendering her, even though we just learned she claims to be trans and we're willing to use any name and pronouns to bring her home. My husband was so tearful he kept forgetting the new pronouns, so the judge had the bailiff remove him from the courtroom. I was pleading for my child to be returned and treated for her unspeakable trauma. Judge Kershaw told me, if I use the word 'trauma' again, he would throw me out too.
For over two months, he withheld custody. He housed Sage in the male quarters of a children's home. Sage told me she was the only girl and repeatedly assaulted. She was given street drugs by the other kids and Khan told her she didn't care. She just wanted to win the case and all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. Khan tried to prove abuse, but we were eventually cleared by both states of all charges.
Sage later told me Khan had told her to lie that we hit her. Khan even had Sage's school counselors testify against us, though they barely knew Sage and they didn't know us at all. Khan told my precious child I didn't want her anymore. I found out Sage never received any of the letters I sent her.
Sage ran from the Children's Home and disappeared for months. They told me she might already be gone forever, but I couldn't give up and I finally found a tip on her social media that led the marshals to her in Texas. She had been drugged, raped, beaten and exploited. This time I was able to be with her for the traumatic rape exam, and to bring her home.
Back in Virginia, she entered the mental health facility that Judge Kershaw had ordered, as it would affirm her as a male. The therapist began pressuring her to have her healthy breasts removed. Sage was too scared to protest, but she asked me to secretly buy her girl's clothes because she wanted to be a girl, but keep them in the car. It took a kind lawyer, Josh Hetzler to secure her discharge.
After almost a year. Sage was finally home. Safe. Alive. Sage is receiving professional trauma care. The first trafficker has already been convicted. Sage has nightmares, panic attacks, rape-related medical issues, but there's hope. I tell her she's not broken she's just scarred. And part of that hope is that in courageously sharing her story, others will be saved.
Sage said she doesn't know who she was back then. She wasn't a boy, she just wanted to have friends. But her school, the judge, the attorney and the doctor were all blinded by their ideology. The consequences for Sage were unspeakable.
Please don't let ideology harm another child. Let parents do our jobs. We know our children best and we love them a million times more.
Thank you.
==
Jesus Christ. This girl was exploited by everybody, except for her parents, who were villainized for literally nothing. It's opposite world.
And the fact that everybody with authority prioritized stupid shit like pronouns and trying to coax her further down into a fake identity, even against her will, and other ideological bullshit over her actual wellbeing is disgraceful.
The judge and attorney need to be disbarred, the therapist stripped of their license, and everyone who conspired to separate Sage from her parents fired.

Tumblr media
"Please don't abuse me." Cool, totally wanted to be crying at work right now.
The shelter staff posted about Lilo on social media, hoping to connect with her owner when they got a call from someone saying they were Lilo's mom. While centers like McKamey provide shelter for dogs, they also provide resources for families who love their pets, but might not be able to keep them due to cost. Mann said they'll give food and supplies to families struggling to pay for their pets' needs. They'll even help the family find a pet-friendly home.

Meghan, Prince Harry adopt beagle rescued from abuse at Virginia plant
In less than two months, Mamma Mia the beagle went from rags to royalty.
Her changed life began in July when federal authorities rescued her — along with 4,000 other beagles — from overcrowded and unsanitary conditions at the Envigo breeding and research plant in Virginia.
Her new home is a sprawling estate in Montecito, where the 7-year-old dog will roam around a lush 7-acre property.
Her new owners? The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
It was a no-photos affair, with two security guards joining Meghan and Harry in their quest for a furry family member.
They played in the backyard with Mia, who had been transported with eight of her newborn puppies from Maryland, where the dogs had been taken after the Virginia rescue, to Valley Village. But they did not want a puppy.

In 1830 a newspaper in North Carolina, the Newbern Sentinel, ran an article about an unpublished dictionary, titled The Cracker Dictionary. The work appears to have remained unpublished (perhaps the title had something to do with this), but in reporting on the words contained in the book’s nascent form the article provides early written evidence of a number of 19th century Americanisms. Among these is absquatulate, which is spelled with an initial O, rather than A, and defined as “to mosey, or to abscond.”
In addition to absquatulate, the reader is informed of the meaning of a number of other similar terms, many of which have retained some degree of currency in our language; flustrated (“frustrated and prostrated, greatly agitated”), rip-roarious, (“ripping and tearing”), and fitified (“subject to fits”) have seen enough continued use that we define them in our Unabridged Dictionary. Other words contained in this never-realized dictionary, such as ramsquaddled (“rowed up salt river”) and spontinaceously (“of one’s own accord”) appear to have been lost with the passage of time.
Two of the loafers, we understand, were yesterday taken and committed to prison; the other has absquatulated. — The Times-Picayune (New Orleans, Louisiana), 13 June 1837
Tumblr media
Cracker, sometimes cracka or white cracker, is a racial epithet directed towards white people, used especially with regard to poor rural whites in the Southern United States. Although commonly a pejorative, it is also used in a neutral context, particularly in reference to a native of Florida or Georgia (see Florida cracker and Georgia cracker)
The exact history and etymology of the word is debated.
The term is "probably an agent noun  from the word crack. The word crack was later adopted into Gaelic as the word craic meaning a "loud conversation, bragging talk" where this interpretation of the word is still in use in Ireland, Scotland, and Northern England today.
The historical derivative of the word craic and its meaning can be seen as far back as the Elizabethan era (1558–1603) where the term crack could be used to refer to "entertaining conversation" (one may be said to "crack" a joke or to be "cracking wise") The word cracker could be used to describe loud braggarts; An example of this can be seen in William Shakespeare's King John (c. 1595) "What cracker is this same that deafs our ears with this abundance of superfluous breath?"
The word was later documented describing a group of "Celtic immigrants, Scotch-Irish people who came to America running from political circumstances in the old world". This usage is illustrated in a 1766 letter to the Earl of Dartmouth which reads:
I should explain to your Lordship what is meant by Crackers; a name they have got from being great boasters; they are a lawless set of rascalls on the frontiers of Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, and Georgia, who often change their places of abode.
The label followed the Scotch-Irish American immigrants, who were often seen by officials as "unruly and ill-mannered" The use of the word is further demonstrated in official documents, where the Governor of Florida said,
'We don't know what to do with these crackers—we tell them to settle this area and they don't; we tell them not to settle this area and they do'
By the early 1800s, those immigrants "started to refer to themselves that way as a badge of honor" as is the case with other events of linguistical reappropriation.
The compound corn-cracker was used of poor white farmers (by 1808), especially from Georgia, but also extended to residents of northern Florida, from the cracked kernels of corn which formed a staple food of this class of people. This possibility is given in the 1911 edition of Encyclopædia Britannica, but the Oxford English Dictionary says a derivation of the 18th-century simplex cracker from the 19th-century compound corn-cracker is doubtful. A "cracker cowboy" with his Florida Cracker Horse and dog by Frederic Remington, 1895
It has been suggested that white slave foremen in the antebellum South were called "crackers" owing to their practice of "cracking the whip" to drive and punish slaves. Whips were also cracked over pack animals, so "cracker" may have referred to whip-cracking more generally. According to An American Glossary (1912):
The whips used by some of these people are called 'crackers', from their having a piece of buckskin at the end. Hence the people who cracked the whips came to be thus named.
Another possibility, which may be a modern folk etymology, supposes that the term derives from "soda cracker", a type of light wheat biscuit which dates in the Southern US to at least the Civil War. The idea has possibly been influenced by "whitebread", a similar term for white people. "Soda cracker" and even "white soda cracker" have become extended versions of "cracker" as an epithet
Tumblr media
A 1783 pejorative use of crackers specified men who "descended from convicts that were transported from Great Britain to Virginia at different times, and inherit so much profligacy from their ancestors, that they are the most abandoned set of men on earth".
Benjamin Franklin, in his memoirs (1790), referred to "a race of runnagates and crackers, equally wild and savage as the Indians" who inhabit the "desert[ed] woods and mountains".
In his 1964 speech "The Ballot or the Bullet", Malcolm X used the term "cracker" in reference to white people in a pejorative context. In one passage, he remarked, "It's time for you and me to stop sitting in this country, letting some cracker senators, Northern crackers and Southern crackers, sit there in Washington, D.C., and come to a conclusion in their mind that you and I are supposed to have civil rights. There's no white man going to tell me anything about my rights."

starter & plotting call !!
please reply if you'd like a starter from;
alice liddell | ouat in wonderland ( intro )
clarke griffin | the 100 ( intro )
mira kano | alice in borderland ( intro )
or like this post if you'd like to plot. under the read more are some of my wanted connections for these muses, also open to other ideas :)
ALICE LIDDELL || WANTED CONNECTIONS
( she/her || 23 || pansexual || aware || secret service agent )
Friends/co-workers; Alice typically doesn't have a problem with people unless she feels wronged or insulted. She's introverted and values her alone time but she could still use some friends, as well as coworkers she knows from the secret service or other government positions. She would probably especially want some friends that share her interests, like writing, swordplay, riddles & games, various adventuring, etc.
Roommates and neighbors; People she sort of has to interact with/get along with. Maybe they'd be friends in other circumstances, maybe not, maybe they don't even really get along now. Who knows
Enemies/frenemies; She has a hard time letting go of grudges and she also has no problem speaking her mind so I'm sure she'll pick up some enemies/frenemies along the way for this.
Former fake memories family and connections; Alice is currently aware, but for her first two years she was unaware, so I'm totally down for her to have some fake siblings/parents/other family members/partner/exes/etc. from that life. She now knows those memories/relationships weren't real, but she still remembers them.
Potential romantic interest; Alice is still very hung up on Cyrus and it'll be hard for her to let that go, but she does think he's dead at the moment which means there's potential for her to have a slow-burn type relationship with someone else.
CLARKE GRIFFIN || WANTED CONNECTIONS
( she/her || 30 || bisexual || aware || senator of maryland )
Government friends and acquaintances; She spends most of her time working, so hopefully she gets along with some of her fellow senators/government people/campaigners.
Friends; Clarke is sort of married to her work so she doesn’t have much time or motivation for socializing outside the office but she’s bound to have made a couple over the years. Maybe a fellow artist, or someone she hit it off with at a bar or a cafe? Someone she hired to walk her dog Picasso?
Government enemies; Clarke is opinionated and has a habit of putting herself in charge or thinking she knows best sometimes; which means she definitely has the potential to clash with people.
Friends with benefits/casual flings; I love this type of relationship for Clarke. I really loved the casual, comfortable relationship she had with Niylah and I could see her wanting that type of thing in DC.
Former one night stands; A similar connection to the one above, but with the potential to be more awkward :)
Exes/ex-flings; I think ever since Lexa died Clarke is scared of falling in love and truly committing to someone. For that reason if she starts getting too attached to one of her flings, or vice versa, she’d want to cut things off and ghost. There’s room for a lot of messiness with this one :)
“Adopted children” Mostly for muses that are 18 to early 20s. Clarke misses the fuck out of Madi and I could totally see her having a sort of motherly soft spot for young people who are also without their families - she could take someone in and let them sleep in her guest room, maybe hire someone as an intern or assistant, etc.
MIRA KANO || WANTED CONNECTIONS
( she/her || 31 || asexual || aware || psychiatrist )
Friends; Mira's very kind and social, and she's a people person so I could see her having different sorts of friends. She enjoys the company of regular, non-evil people as well as those that are a little twisted like she is.
Enemies; I don't really think Mira would dislike/hate anyone unless they are truly horrible (and even then it's case-by-case lmao) but I could definitely see people not liking Mira. She's manipulative, creepy and likes playing mind games. She could make enemies out of smart, no-nonsense people who can see through that, as well as people she's manipulated in the past who have since realized she messed with them.
Clients; Mira is a therapist, so if any of your muses are looking for therapy, she is here! No promises she will make anything better, in fact she may make things worse, but... she's trying. In her own way.
Flirtationships/romantic interests; I headcanon Mira as asexual but not aromantic. She likes to be courted, she likes flirting and bantering, she likes cheesy romantic gestures you'd see in the movies, and she'd want some of that for herself.

hi, different anon here. i'm interested in what you have to say so i've done the homework you assigned. to preface, i have no experience with dogs
reasons you listed for using bubbly language:
a. preventing stigma around rescues to gain public support and donations. i think this is a fine thing to do
b. saying that a dog prefers to be alone is the same as saying it won't get along with other dogs. and you say here that it is my problem if i can't understand that, ok i get that
2. how i would deal with my pet developing unwanted behavioral issues:
i would contact the shelter i got it from, and maybe a specialist. using your example of fear based reactivity, i would at first remove whatever is causing the fear if possible, and then follow the instructions of the shelter and specialist afterwards.
Your reasons for using bubbly language are fine. the problem arises though when you use language that is straight up lying. to use your example, if you are marketing a dog as a "monogamous mutt", i am not going to know that another accurate label for it would be "aggressive murder machine". that is not an issue of reading comprehension, and it is not something i can google. the adjective "monogamous" does not in any way suggest a tendency for violence.
let's say that i've seen a dog at your shelter that i like the look and sound of from how you market it. the description includes the phrase "monogamous mutt", and i don't know what that means, so I ask your shelter about it. you said that the shelter would give me full info about it, so i trust that you'd tell me that "monogamous mutt" means behavioral issues and aggression. again, no way of knowing that in advance, i would feel deceived and less trusting of your shelter as a whole. but perhaps the dog looks really good to me, and i think i can handle it. i am not a dog person, you would deem me not qualified, so if i have this right, you would just reject me from adopting the dog you marketed to me. that would really sting, and i probably wouldn't go to your shelter again. maybe you'd recommend other dogs, but those dogs aren't the one i specifically came to your shelter for. i think the deceptive marketing should just be avoided
maybe my reading comprehension isn't good enough, maybe your shelter isn't actually using the term "monogamous mutt" to market aggressive dogs, but there definitely are shelters that are. one example, there are multiple others online: https://patch.com/maryland/fallston/goober-dog-week-humane-society-harford-county
last few things:
you recommend that non-dog people shouldn't be adopting. then a large subset of people you are marketing an aggressive dog to are people who already have dogs in their homes
i repeatedly use the example of "monogamous mutt". perhaps you consider that cherrypicking, but i am using it because you brought it up and it is the one that there is a problem with
thanks for the homework! congratulations on choosing the correct approach when it comes to your pet developing unwanted behavioral issues.
i used the monogamous mutt as the repeated example because it was genuinely funny to me. too bad that the shelter you linked, and maybe the others use that phrase - i dont love it, and wouldn't use it about my non-dog-friendly fosters. my shelter uses much more straightforward but still 'flowery' language, some examples are: prefers to be the only dog in the house, doesn't get along well with other dogs, should be the only dog in the house, prefers to be an only child etc
non-dog people shouldnt be adopting dogs =/= every dog person has a dog in their homes: that's not true. for multiple reasons - one: when i say non-dog people, i mean people who are not interested in dogs, who havent done any research, who are not willing to do any research, who only want a dog bc its cute, etc etc. also a lot of dog savvy people are/can be dogless - i am one, as i at the moment focus on fostering and dont have the capacity to adopt one, or there are dog savvy people who lost their dog and would adopt another one, dog savvy people who had family dogs now looking to adopt their own, who work with dogs (trainers, vets etc) so its just, yknow, "a large subset of people you are marketing an aggressive dog to are people who already have dogs in their homes" not correct. also Very dog savvy people with dogs at home can still adopt dogs with dog aggression - with proper introduction, training, resources etc, dog aggression can be 'fixed' - its not a death sentence. we have many aggressive dogs that became 2nd dogs. my friend's adopted dog (from my shelter) is dog aggressive in /general/, but she spends a lot of time with my fosters because we can handle that situation. its rare to find adopters who can go through this, but its not non existent
you'd feel disappointed if the dog you want is described as monogamous mutt and you learn that its aggressive and also would get rejected, another disappointment - lets say that scenario unfolds, im sorry, thats kind of all i can say. we have to sometimes choose the lesser of two evils (is that the right phrase?) if our flowery language use is going to cause us 1 adoption but will bring 2 donations through our socials - we will pick that, we cant control people's emotions. also qualifying to adopt is not just about having a dog before but a lot of other things - prev experience, sure, but also financial stability, your housing situation, social life, active life, job security, knowledge about dog training costs/vet costs, etc.
let me know if i missed anything or if anything is unclear. i like you, feel free to also dm me off anon, you seem to be able to have a civil discussion

One of my favourite stories is how S’mores became conditioned to love the Samsung “Morning Flower” alarm.
Shortly after his adoption my mom and I brought S’mores to Maryland to be my academy dog for Canine Cognition. Every morning, when my moms alarm would go off, S’mores would get up off the cool bathroom tile floor he’d been sleeping on, to jump into the bed for snuggles. The association between the song and the opportunity to snuggle formed only a few days into our week. To this day if you hum, whistle, or sing the words my mom made up to go along, he will come running to your side.

In Baltimore City, MD: 11-month-old, 12lb very fearful pup let loose and abandoned in shelter's parking lot - BARCS, Baltimore MD
- Rescue Needed -
Brownie Sundae- 11 months, unaltered female, 12lbs
Poor, nervous Brownie Sundae was originally brought in as an owner surrender, and when staff attempted to schedule an appointment, her owner ended up just releasing her loose in the parking lot. Fortunately, staff was able to quickly corral her inside.
After the whole ordeal, understandably, Brownie Sundae was quite shaken up and confused. She was very uncomfortable and growling for her intake exam, and did have to be muzzle wrapped for safety. She's very nervous of the leash, but once on, she was easy to unleash. She is slightly flinchy when people move to quickly, but has allowed slow and gentle pets.
The good news is that Brownie Sundae really enjoys the presence of other polite pups. She can be initially shy, but as long as the other dogs are respectful and gentle with her, she loves to play chase and romp around the yard.
Due to her general fearfulness at this time, Brownie Sundae is not available for adoption through BARCS and can only be placed with an approved partner rescue. She will be available for rescue pick-up after 2/22.
Please let us know if your organization can help!
Thank you,
The BARCS Rescue Team

This is Mia who was adopted by Harry&Meghan
Meghan, Prince Harry adopt beagle rescued from abuse at Virginia plant

AUG. 24, 2022 UPDATED 8:20 AM PT
“The duchess called me personally,” said Shannon Keith, an animal rights attorney who runs the Beagle Freedom Project out of the low-slung Valley Village house where she used to live. But Keith said that at first, she didn’t realize who the “VIP Donor” interested in a beagle adoption was.
“She calls on my cell with no Caller ID and says, ‘Hey Shannon, this is Meghan,’” said Keith, whose nonprofit organization rescues beagles and other dogs as well as cats, pigs, horses, rabbits, goats and sheep, most of which were used in laboratory testing. “We talked for 30 minutes, and I thought, ‘Is this Megan Fox?’”
But it was Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and her husband, Prince Harry, who made an after-hours visit to the unassuming San Fernando Valley house on Hartsook Street this month.
The royal couple’s spokeswoman confirmed the visit to The Times; neither commented on the adoption. It was a no-photos affair, with two security guards joining Meghan and Harry in their quest for a furry family member.

Mamma Mia was saved from a life of breeding and is now living with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in Montecito. Above, Mia feeds her puppies at the Beagle Rescue Project after her arrival in Los Angeles.(Beagle Freedom Project)
They played in the backyard with Mia, who had been transported with eight of her newborn puppies from Maryland, where the dogs had been taken after the Virginia rescue, to Valley Village. But they did not want a puppy.
“The duchess is holding Mia and was like, ‘We’re adopting her,’” Keith said. “She was like ‘No, we don’t want a Christmas puppy. … We want ones we can help who are older.’”
Meghan had a rescue beagle for many years, and when she saw the story about Envigo’s shutdown, she wanted to get involved, her spokeswoman told The Times. She knew puppies usually are easier to find homes for and wanted to help one of the older, more vulnerable canines.
Mia’s storybook ending followed a life at the Envigo plant described by the Department of Justice as a house of horrors. In a lawsuit filed in federal court against the company in May, authorities say beagles were euthanized or left for dead by a meager staff that routinely violated the Animal Welfare Act.
Investigators visiting the facility on numerous occasions in 2021 and 2022 found nightmarish conditions, including beagles with severe and untreated medical issues, insufficient food and housed in filthy conditions. The dogs were sometimes being fed moldy food, and on two occasions, inspectors found live maggots in their food, prosecutors said.
Some animals had been euthanized without first receiving anesthesia, and hundreds were found dead at the facility, according to inspectors. In addition to the euthanized dogs, investigators discovered that 300 canines died at the plant over a seven-month period from “unknown causes.”

Envigo, the second-largest producer of dogs for medical research, breeds roughly 25% of the beagles used in medical and drug research in the U.S. The company, purchased in November 2021 by Inotiv — an animal testing firm that also has come under scrutiny — has not denied allegations of noncompliance with the Animal Welfare Act.
“There is actually very little that should remain in dispute in this case,” lawyers for Envigo said in court papers, adding that officials spent millions of dollars in the last year working to improve the facility. Envigo’s parent company, Inotiv, said it installed 1,200 new aluminum doors, upgraded and closed in flooring gaps, and installed cooling towers in the buildings.
But Keith said that for all the upgrades to the facility, the beagles were still being abused.
“Basically, it’s a breeding prison,” she said of the Virginia plant. “Not only were the issues not corrected after inspectors went, but they were getting worse.”
After the lawsuit was filed, Envigo agreed to release 4,000 beagles from the plant and shut down operations. The federal government and the company agreed to transfer the dogs to the Humane Society of the United States.
The beagles are being moved to shelters or groups such as the Beagle Freedom Project, which places the dogs in foster homes for rehabilitation before finding their forever homes.

Hundreds of beagles have made their way to Southern California.
Priceless Pets, which has been working with Envigo and the Humane Society, has taken in nearly 1,000 beagles from the Virginia plant.
Ashlee Sprague, who runs the Chino Hills no-kill shelter, said she had been to the Envigo facility and said she’s seen worse treatment of dogs at shelters in California.
Although she was not authorized to give details about the out-of-state plant, she said it was no way for the beagles to live.
She also said the rescued beagles represent only a fraction of all dogs that need adopting.
“The beagle mission is like a tiny little drop in the bucket of our organization,” she said. “We’re in this for the animals, and being able to save those dogs from being euthanized is truly remarkable.
“But I’m just so thankful for the attention because through all this ... we’ve been able to get so many other dogs adopted, and that’s remarkable,” Sprague said.
The Beagle Freedom Project has taken in 25 of the rescued beagles. The puppies yipped and bit at one another, played with toys and doused their feet in a water bowl in the backyard of Keith’s home Monday as a few foster parents milled about.
Mia’s 7-week-old puppies scrambled around the yard and between the legs of Keith’s massive but mindful Great Dane, Maya. The eight pups were apparently unaware their mother had recently been crowned Dog Duchess of Montecito.

Five older puppies joined the mix in the yard. They’d been trucked from Cumberland, Va., to the Atlanta Humane Society, where Beagle Freedom Project transporter Malina Shirley scooped them up and drove them to Los Angeles.
The older puppies had Envigo’s green, six-letter serial numbers tattooed on the insides of their ears. The youngest pups weren’t marked because they were born too close to the plant’s shutdown, Keith said.
With about 1,000 people on the waitlist to adopt the beagles, Keith expects her nonprofit should have no trouble finding homes for the Virginia rescues.
But she is focused on finding the perfect home for each one, a special match between owner and dog.
As the Duke and Duchess prepared to leave the Valley Village house with the newest, four-legged member of the House of Windsor, Harry paused, Keith said.

“He’s just like, ‘Well, we can’t leave yet because there’s something in that back house she needs. Does she have a favorite toy or something?’” Keith said.
The royals made their way back and found a box filled with toys. They flipped it over, and Mia grabbed a fox toy she had played with during her cross-country trip from Maryland after leaving Envigo.
And with that, the Duke, the Duchess and their dog left the Valley. “OK, now we can go home,” Harry said.

Hailing from Baltimore, Camila is an animal-loving woman working at the McMurdo Station in Antarctica. She is an inch shorter than Carmen and slightly slimmer, with equally dark skin, black hair in an afro of coil curls, and brown eyes.
During her suspect appearance in Death Below Zero, Camila wore thick black thermal leggings with matching fur-lined winter boots, a yellow parka, a fuzzy black scarf and yellow earmuffs. As per this suspect appearance, it is known that Camila has survival training and is in contact with penguins.
Synopsis
The younger sister of Carmen Martinez, Camila currently resides in Antarctica with her adopted daughter, Milagros. She is a veterinarian who helps the local wildlife around the station.
She grew up with her family in Baltimore and always wanted to be like her older sister. She preferred to play with Carmen's toys, read her books and would beg her parents to let her have Carmen's hand-me-down clothes. No one questioned Camila's choices and assumed she looked up to her big sister and wanted to mimic her.
But as Camila got older, her preferences never changed. One day, as a teenager, she asked if Carmen would call her Camila. The older one agreed but asked why her sister wanted to be called that. Camila explained that her old name didn't feel right, and being called Camila made her feel happy.
With Carmen's help, they did some research and learned about transgenderism. Camila realized that fit with the emotions and dysphoria she had been feeling over the years. After discovering she was transgender, Carmen helped introduce her new sister to their parents.
Their parents were slightly confused but accepted their new daughter with open arms. Together, the family learned what it meant to be transgender and found resources and support for Camila to help her transition. And after Camila began meeting other transgender youth and other members of the LGBTQ+ community, the Martinez house became a safe haven for those kids.
Camila decided to pursue a career as a veterinarian and attend a local university, where she met her best friend, Alondra Santiago. Alondra was from Puerto Rico and had no family in the area, so Camila helped her adjust to the culture shock. The two graduated with honours and worked at the same animal clinic after graduation.
Years after graduation, Alondra announced to Camila that she was pregnant. Camila was ecstatic for her friend and promised to be there for anything she needed. But no one could have predicted what would be discovered during Alondra's second trimester. An ultrasound revealed that the lower half of the baby's legs didn't develop, and further tests showed that it was a genetic condition that caused the birth defect.
Alondra's boyfriend told her to abort the baby, not wanting a disabled child. But she refused, so he left, abandoning her and the baby. Camila immediately had her friend move into her apartment and told her to stay as long as needed. She helped Alondra through the rest of her pregnancy and held her hand when Milagros was born, and even got to cut the baby's umbilical cord.
But three years later, tragedy strikes. Alondra was killed during a bank robbery while protecting a child. Camila and Milagros had been home when a police officer arrived to give them the news. Milagros couldn't understand why her mother wasn't coming home, and Camila tried to stay strong through her grief for the little girl.
After the funeral and Alondra's body being put to rest, Camila was contacted by Alondra's lawyer about her Will. The lawyer informed Camila that Alondra had declared her Milagros's legal guardian should anything happen to her. Camila was surprised, but she never had any intention of abandoning the girl and immediately began the adoption process.
Camila's relatives supported her and welcomed Milagros into their family. The girl was showered in love by everyone, and while she misses her mommy, she's happy to have Auntie Camila and her new family. She loves spending time with her grandparents (Camila and Alondra's parents) and listening to Auntie Carmen's stories of her overseas adventures.
A few months before Death Below Zero, Camila was approached about a job opportunity in Antarctica. It was to assist in researching the effect of climate change on wildlife and the global repercussions. With the encouragement of her family, Camila and Milagros moved to the South Pole, the latter very excited to be living so close to penguins. The two enjoy living at the South Pole but look forward to returning to Baltimore and telling their family and friends about their freezing adventures.
When the Bureau arrived for their vacation, Camila was excited to see her sister again. She was even more excited to meet the nephew she had heard so much about. Milagros was the same; she’d missed her aunt and was excited to have a new friend to play with. She couldn’t wait to introduce Sanjay to her penguin friends.
After Emil Gunnarsson’s murder had been solved, Camila offered to take Carmen and her team on a penguin-watching tour. Once Jonah had repaired the truck’s generator, Camila took the Bureau to the local penguin reserve, where Milagros introduced everyone to her penguin friends. She introduced them all by name, and the Bureau found it adorable to watch the little girl teach them about penguins. Camila was so proud of her daughter and knew Alondra would be too.
Once the Bureau’s visit ended, Camila and Milagros watched Elijah Young’s plane fly away, carrying the team towards their new adventure. Carmen promised to call when they reached the mainland, and Camila looked forward to hearing about the Bureau’s future adventure. Milagros asked Camen and Sanjay to send them pictures and pick up souvenirs wherever they went, and they promised to do so for the little girl.
Near the end of The Darkest Hour, Camila and Milagros returned to celebrate the defeat of SOMBRA alongside the rest of the Bureau's family and friends.

Trivia
Inspiration for her came from Camila Noceda from The Owl House
She likes to style her afro into different shapes and even temporarily dyes it for added fun
Milagros is her secondary stylist. The girl loves coming up with new looks for her aunt’s hair and having her hair styled in return
Sometimes Camila and Milagros do matching hairstyles
She used to go on trips to help endangered wildlife. She had to stop after she adopted Milagros
She still works with a non-profit organization that rescues animals from abusive homes and animal fights
She's always fostering a rescued animal in her house until they find a forever home. She'll foster any animals, from cats and dogs to reptiles and birds. She's temporarily put this on hold while in Antarctica but plans to restart it when she and Milagros returns to Baltimore
Camila always looked up to her big sister. Likewise, Carmen has always protected her sister growing up, beating up any bullies that made fun of Camila or hurt her
When Camila announced she was a girl, Carmen immediately gave her all her old clothes so that her little sister would enjoy the clothes she wore
Her favourite memory with Camila is when her sister wore a dress for the first time. Camila couldn't stop twirling and was smiling so brightly it was like looking at the sun. Carmen still has the picture she took to commemorate the moment
