NEW MUSIC:

Over the weekend whilst playing Slam Dunk Festival, State Champs played a brand new song titled “Outta My Head,” later releasing it on streaming platforms. It follows on from “Just Sound,” which dropped a couple of weeks ago.

Don Broco announced that the release date for their new album Amazing Things is being pushed back. The record will now drop on October 22, as opposed to its original scheduled release date of this Friday.

Angels & Airwaves shared a new track from their upcoming album Lifeforms titled “Spellbound.” Their highly-anticipated new album will be dropping on September 24 via Rise Records.

Real Friends released a full band version of their latest single “Teeth.” The song is part of the band’s new EP Torn in Two, which will be dropping this Friday via Pure Noise Records.

Ice Nine Kills released another track from their upcoming album The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood, paying homage to Resident Evil. The track is called “Rainy Day,” which follows two previous singles.

The Used released a deluxe version of their 2020 album Heartwork last week, which features 11 new songs. The new edition features the song “River Stay,” which has already amassed over 138,000 streams on Spotify.

Billy Talent returned with a new song titled “End of Me” featuring Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo. The band also announced the details of their newest album Crisis of Faith, dropping on January 21, 2022.

Palaye Royale shared a new, stripped back version of their track “No Love in LA.” The song was preceded by their previous single “Punching Bag,” released back in July.

All Time Low teamed up with Cheat Codes for a new track titled “Ghost Story.” The band recently released another new collab featuring Pale Waves' Heather Baron-Gracie titled “PMA.”

The Pretty Reckless shared a live acoustic version of their song “Only Love Can Save Me Now.” The track appears on the band's latest album Death by Rock and Roll, which is out now via Fearless Records.

TOUR ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Green Day pranked tourmates Weezer during their song “Surf Wax America” by joining them onstage in outrageous costumes. The bands celebrated the end of the first leg of the Hella Mega Tour.

Roblox and Warner Music announced the details of a new interactive experience involving Twenty One Pilots. The Twenty One Pilots Concert Experience will start on September 17 in conjunction with their Takeover Tour.

OTHER NEWS:

Machine Gun Kelly and Blackbear won the MTV VMA for Best Alternative this past Sunday for their song “My Ex’s Best Friend.” He also took the stage with Travis Barker to perform their new song “Papercuts.”

Sum 41's debut album All Killer No Filler has been certified 2x Platinum in the United Kingdom. It's the band's only album to have hit Platinum status in the UK, with their album Does This Look Infected? currently being Gold.

Essential Steven Universe Episodes

Hello everyone!

Looking to watch Steven Universe, but not drag yourself through all the episodes? Never fear! I’ve made a list of what I believe to be the most essential episodes of Steven Universe with unnecessary ones labelled as such (and my reasons why). Now here’s some things to keep in mind before looking at the list:

When I say “essential” I mean ones that introduce important elements to the story. New important characters, new powers, episodes that develop the character and plot-relevant episodes fit this category.

Episodes that develop certain characters will be labeled as “unnecessary” if they don’t contribute enough to the plot or their growth.

There may be some personal bias since I found one or two filler episodes to be enjoyable despite their uselessness to the overall plot but I’ll label them as well so you know.

Avoid reading ahead. The labels for unnecessary ones may contain SPOILERS so if you care about that kind of stuff: you’ve been warned.

On to the list!

Season 1

a. Together Breakfast: shows off gem rooms and a monster but that’s really it.

b. Frybo: introduces PeeDee but he doesn’t ever really do anything so...?

a. Tiger Millionaire: while there is some character development, there isn’t really enough to make it worth watching since most of the episode is focused on wrestling.

11. Lars and the Cool Kids

a. Onion Trade: mainly about Onion; if you like his character, feel free to watch but if not I’d avoid it since it ultimately doesn’t mean much.

a. Beach Party: Gems piss off the family that runs the town’s pizza shop and try to make it up to them by inviting them to hang out. Shenanigan ensue, but has no lasting impact on the story.

14. Rose’s Room

a. Joking Victim: develops Sadie and Lars’ relationship; skip if you don’t really care about either

16. Steven and the Stevens

17. Monster Buddies

18. An Indirect Kiss

19. Mirror Gem & Ocean Gem

a. House Guest: shows why Steven has trouble with his powers, but nothing too important happens other than that; watch if you wanna see more Pearl & Greg interactions

20. Space Race: shows Pearl’s fondness of space; develops her character and background but not necessary; skip if you want

a. Secret Team: if you don’t like episodes about characters making temporary truces I’d avoid this one; not enough character development to make it worthwhile.

b. Island Adventure: another Sadie and Lars episode; Lars opens about his feelings but not much else happens.

21. Keep Beach City Weird: relevant for SU: Future reasons, but if you don’t like Ronaldo skip

22. Fusion Cuisine

a. Garnet’s Universe: contributes nothing, but is a kinda cute episode.

b. Watermelon Steven: introduces a character(s) that is only used a total of three (maybe four?) times; also introduces a power that is rarely ever used when it matters.

23. Lion 3: Straight to Video

24. Alone Together

25. Warp Tour

a. The Test: some good character discussions, but not important overall.

26. Future Vision

27. On the Run

a. Horror Club: if you don’t care for Ronaldo, Sadie or Lars: skip. Even if you care about Lars, skip this one since you kinda get the gist of his character at this point.

b. Winter Forecast: a few nice moments, but ultimately a big “what-if” episode

28. Maximum Capacity

29. Marble Madness

30. Rose’s Scabbard

a. Open Book: a Steven and Connie episode; fun if you like them, but skippable

b. Shirt Club: focuses on one of the Cool Kids but ultimately means nothing

c. Say Uncle: Uncle Grandpa Crossover; some funny moments from the Gems but if you don’t like UG avoid this one.

31. Story for Steven

32. The Message

a. Political Power: addresses certain concerns the Gems have, but nothing important crosses over into the next episode; most about Mayor Dewey anyway

a. Joy Ride: Steven messes around with the Cool Kids; there’s a bit here briefly referenced in SU: Future I think, but other than nothing really happens; skip it if you want

b. Love Letters: properly introduces Jamie and shows his character, but he never does anything for the plot. All you need to know if him and Steven are friends.

c. Reformed: introduces Amethyst's new form and shows more of her insecurities but that’s all this episode is really good for.

2. Sworn to the Sword

a. Rising Tides, Crashing Skies: a Ronaldo episode; need I say more?

3. Keeping It Together

4. We Need To Talk

5. Chille Tid

6. Cry for Help

7. Keystone Motel

a. Onion Friend: another Onion episode; addresses how Amethyst feels regarding the current situation, but other than that nothing worthwhile.

b. Historical Friction: Jamie puts on a play and some gem stuff is involved; no action, but tells us about the Gems’ history

a. Nightmare Hospital: mostly about Connie and her mom; some cool scary bits, but skippable.

b. Sadie’s Song: entirely about Sadie and how her mom makes her feel; skip if you don’t care much for Sadie.

a. Too Far: develops Peridot and Amethyst’s relationship, and develops Peridot’s character, but not enough to make this episode necessary

12. The Answer

a. Steven’s Birthday: fun episode, but ultimately contributes nothing

13. It Could’ve Been Great

a. Log Date 7 15 2: shows how Peridot got to where she is (as a character) and fills in some holes between Catch and Release and Message Received; fun and worth watching but skippable regardless

a. The New Lars: focuses on Lars mostly, but Sadie also shows up at one point; skip if you don’t care about them.

b. Beach City Drift: watch if you like Stevonnie; skip if you don’t really care.

c. Restaurant Wars: pointless fight between the pizza shop family and the fry stand family. I guess if you like food watch this one, but you can skip this one.

d. Kiki’s Pizza Delivery Service: focuses on certain member’s of the pizza family. Skippable, but watch if you like pizza I guess.

a. Greg the Babysitter: a “stories of the past” episode where Rose shows up; nothing important really happens though

b. Gem Hunt: a certain character makes a return, but not until the end of the episode; skippable

a. Steven vs. Amethyst: develops their relationship but skippable overall

2. Mindful Education

a. Future Boy Zoltron: skippable since it focuses on Mr. Smiley and a former colleague; watch if you want to see some fun interactions.

b. Last One Out of Beach City: fun episode and shows some of Pearl’s development, but still skippable.

c. Onion Gang: it’s an Onion episode so: skippable.

d. Gem Harvest: Thanksgiving episode; reveals Steven’s real last name but nothing else important.

3. Three Gems and a Baby

4. Steven’s Dream

5. Adventures in Light Distortion

6. Gem Heist

7. The Zoo

8. That Will Be All

a. The New Crystal Gems: shows us what Connie, Lapis and Peridot did while Steven was in space. Nothing really happens so just skip this one.

a. Rocknaldo: features Ronaldo once again and is arguably one of the worst episodes. Thankfully, it’s skippable.

b. Tiger Philanthropist: callback to an older episode; doesn’t contribute anything to the current plot

10. Room for Ruby

a. Lion 4: Alternate Ending: goes no where and contributes nothing; reveals possible name for Steven if he was a girl though so...cool I guess? Skip it.

11. Doug Out

a. The Good Lars: develops Lars’ character a little, but not much else

12. Are You My Dad

13. I Am My Mom

Season 5

a. Stuck Together: Steven and Lars’ relationship develops further along with Lars’ character; some dramatic moments make it an overall a good episode, but you can skip it if you want.

a. Dewey Wins: Steven realizes why Connie’s upset with him; saved you from watching Mayor Dewey for almost eleven minutes.

b. Gemcation: another good episode, but skippable regardless.

4. Raising the Barn

a. Back to the Kindergarten: shows how Peridot feels after a certain event, but nothing else really happens.

b. Sadie Killer: Sadie starts a band and that’s it. Skip if you don’t care much for Sadie.

c. Kevin Party: watch for character drama and one resolution, but skip if you can’t stand Kevin.

5. Lars of the Stars

6. Jungle Moon

7. Your Mother and Mine

a. The Big Show: a Sadie’s band episode; skippable

b. Pool Hopping: shows off Garnet’s fears and insecurities but is still skippable

c. Letters to Lars: basically amounts to Dewey finding his place in town after losing his job; nothing else so just skip this one.

a. What’s Your Problem: develops Steven and Amethyst’s relationship further; skip if you want, but it’s a good episode to watch.

b. A Very Special Episode: fun episode but contributes nothing to the overall story.

4. Snow Day

a. Why So Blue: shows other Lapis Lazulis and shows us how far Lapis has really come; watch if you’re a Lapis fan, but skip if you want.

b. Little Graduation: skip if you never really cared too much about any of the human characters since this is mostly about them.

c. Prickly Pair: downer of an episode; no one ever mentions anything that’s said in this episode, but check it out if you wanna see Steven more of Steven’s plant powers!

4,5 years of Gotham in my life♥

Wow my emotions these last days. I’m not much of a text poster on this site but when Gotham ended I really felt I wanted to write this!

Gotham has been a huge part of my life for so long now. 4 years and 7 months since the first episode aired, that’s some time gosh. And so much has happened during this journey! I just wanna mention some memorable things during these years. Like remember the pre-s02x09 excitement?? And other stuffs, ah here we go!

The first trailer made me SO EXCITE, I had wanted more batman villains content for years since I have always found the batman villains squad so interesting and good and unique characters, there is so much to explore here! And so the Gotham trailer came and I just OH MY GOD this is exactly what I want!! And so it started and it was amazing. My first love was Ed, it took him his first scene in ep1 to make me go totally THIS IS MY FAV! More eps went on and I required more Ed content. But then Oswald slowly grew on me kinda out of nowhere like I wasn’t expecting it. And when amazing ep7 aired it just hit down on me from the sky, like it does when I know I got a new obsession/fandom. Oswald’s amazing scenes in ep7 and I went ”Okay this is it, I’M DEEP INTO THIS NOW AND I LOVE IT!”. In exactly THIS↓ scene/moment I basically said those words out loud and realized this is my life now, ugh also one of my fav looks I miss the bangs:

Shortly after ep7 I started shipping Nygmobblepot, since we knew who these characters were and who they will end up being it made SO much sense in this show, they were like the two familiar main villains in kinda the same age and I also loved them both so I mean it was obvious for me. Man in the beginning we were so very few in the shipping Nygmob pond, in the OCEAN of Gobblepot. It was a bit of a struggle sometimes, ppl wrote hate on my Nygmob posts n stuff shrug. And I just didn’t get how not more ppl could see it? It would make more sense if this were new characters like they hadn’t even met but since we knew this is Riddler and Penguin it just was fate for them to cross paths soon enough! We needed Nygmob content! I started making tons of my own AU:s since if the show wouldn’t give us content I would do it.

BUT we had Robin & Cory with us! Reminder that Cory invented the shipname after 5 minutes and Robin & Cory’s amazing twitter activity during s1 especially I will always remember as a fav. Remember when they we’re so into roleplaying Nygmob and spoke how Ed & Os loved each other and all sorts of things. All about going to The Foxglove together and stuff. Ugh it was amazing, I miss their interactions.

In this very smol pond is when one day my shining star @conscience-killer (aka okimi79) approached me, with this ♥ ”Sometimes I feel we’re the only Nygmobblepot shippers in the world…well apart from Robin and Cory. We should have a secret handshake or something.”

And man did we get a secret handshake! Gosh MY DEAR OKIMI! That I up til this day since then has spoken with like everyday for 4,5 years, you are amazing ♥ And in that time of so few shippers it felt even more special, to have someone else out there as obsessed as me. I’m so grateful we found each other at exactly that time and we’ve been through so much on this journey ♥.

When Nygmob in spring finally had their first scene it was so amazing and I have no idea how many times I have watched that scene to this day, and also with that the ship grew a bit yas!!

Let’s jump forward a bit. NYC Comic Con 2015 in fall, one of my fav Robin & Cory cons/interview times! Because the legendary ep 2x9 was soon upon us and OMG remember how excite they were in those interviews!?! And THEN, that fkn night THE episode aired. I couldn’t believe it was real, it was EVERYTHING we had dreamed of!!! SO MUCH NYGMOB CONTENT and so in character and gosh. Man their season 2 relationship is just so beautiful and I love it til this day and 2x9 is forever my favorite episode because it meant EVERYTHING for us shippers and more people also started seeing the connection between Nygmob and so more ppl started to make content and join in!

A time after another shining star came into my life, @constant-sinner (aka (riddlelvr) ♥ This amazing person and artist! And together with her and okimi I am part of the best trash family of three and I can’t believe I’ve been a mom (yet i’m the youngest but i’m fashion fur coat mom okay) to these trash sinners for like 4 years. ♥

Okay but remember all INSANE SMAYLOR CONTENT BEFORE SEASON 3!!? Man that was also one of the best times I had during these years. God they were so excite for their relationship in s3 and WEREN’T WE ALL! And omg Comic Con. I had my fkn header for 3 years soon lol, man that moment I remember seeing the signing booth stream all casual and Robin & Cory goes “Smaaylor!! Nygmobblepot!!! ;))” And I’m just wait WHUT omg. Their press tours with Sean is something I’ll miss even more than the episodes, always such a joy seeing those three together!

And when season 3 started it was just insane. To be honest how their relationship grew in s3 that’s how I expected it to grow after their meeting in s1, it made sense already back then. Ed admiring Oswald and sneaking to his club and Oswald would be a huge part of Ed’s journey to become the Riddler but ah well, I did my best with my AU:s back then!

And then s3 came and Gotham EXPLODED and I had no idea where all million ppl suddenly came from lol. It became huge. But since it still feels kinda close to this day (2,5 yrs though man), my most nostalgic feels will always be over s1-2 so I’m not gonna write so much about the season 3-5 times in this text. My closest to heart milestones is during the first years and now that I’ve seen all episodes I still think season 1 is the best overall, except the lack of Nygmob content ofc ;)

I’ve not just felt love for the show ofc, the show isn’t perfect. There has been serious flaws and bad writing and plot drops. Tbh s4 I just felt so NOPE about? 22 eps of waste…Like Ed’s plot for example like he barley had his own plot what happened? And we also have the q*eerbait Nygmob issue obviously. I have also felt the show has been a bit childish being -helloo- GOTHAM city we’re talking about? I think it would have been much better off with a MA-rating tbh to properly tell certain stories. After s4 though I’m glad in s5 Nygmob finally got some proper screen time being together and in character!! Like that’s how their relationship should have been from beginning of season 4, or season 1 if u ask me lol but ya know!

BUT I LOVE THIS SHOW, the amazing actors and characters and scenery and costumes!! Ed, Oswald, Robin & Cory will ofc always have the most special place in my heart ♥ The Nygmob journey in the show has meant so much to me to follow it from day one and I never knew how much this show would mean to me when I started back in the day.

This show. And not just the show itself but my journey and life around it!!? So much has happened. For one example I had made a bit of gifs before but Gotham really got me into gif making, and it’s been a joy sharing content and my Nygmob AU will always be among my most fun things I’ve done, it was like if they ain’t gonna give us enough content I WILL. It’s a fun way of gif making to manip scenes to create something new! And today I still enjoy making gifs, as you probably know heh. Thanks so much for all nice comments and reblogs through all these years ya’ll!! It warms my heart and I love to read reblog tags!

I have been at con and got to meet Robin, enjoyed so many interviews and promos, chatted with wonderful people. Every Friday night I have been up in my Europe timezone at 2am to live watch the show, the workdays after has been a bit of a struggle of being tired with going to bed like 5am lol but man it’s been so nice to follow it when it airs!

Watching together with my dearest @conscience-killer and @constant-sinner . Two of the best that happened to me during these years. These two people that I’ve spoken with like everyday for 4 years! Through Gotham finding two of my dearest friends in my life. Watching the show together and screaming, crying, laughing during this journey, about not just the show but EVERYTHING in life. They also are amazing writers and artists ♥ And also helped me endless times with gif caption when my non-native brain trying to write gif captions at 3am after the episode lol. All my love to you both ♥

THANKS TO ALL AMAZING PEOPLE that impacted me over these years. The cast and nice fandom people! My dearest @conscience-killer and @constant-sinner. And I also wanna mention dear @millicentcordelia and @selene-volturo that are amazing ppl that have been here with me since the very beginning of season 1. And they have always been so down to earth even during the stormiest periods of this show’s existence ♥ I’m so glad we’ve shared this LONG journey!

And also hugs to my dear mutual fandom friends that I’ve shared hours of conversations with over the years. Some of us maybe don’t speak as much nowadays and some of us have gone separate ways with new interests but I hope you know who you all are, regardless if we spoke yesterday or 2015. You have made my fandom time a joy!

I’m actually okay with the show ending now you know. Ofc it’s a bit sad but as I said I felt s4 was kinda stomping around in the same spot and even s5 had some fillers like they didn’t have more to do to push the story forward? The last ep was a nice easter egg wrap up for this LONG journey. And I mean shows live on with fan content, and who knows maybe it will return somehow? But it feels good they told us it would end so I was prepared for this and to say ”goodbye”. But it’s not goodbye because content will continue on this site and I’ll continue re-enjoy this show!

This is 4,5 years. In 2 pages, I could prob write 20 but ah, but i felt I got to to summary the most important things for me over these years ♥. This show and stuff that came with it will always be such a big part of my life, ALL LOVE AND HUGS!

*Bruce and Alfred take out the soldiers in the hallway* OHH GO! YES! YES!

“Bruce hit me up on the radio a little while ago, looking for you. Said things are a mess in the GCPD.” OK wow, so like everybody’s in contact with each other. Wow!

“But you [Jim] have me [Barbara].” “And me [Ed].” “I [Jim] don’t trust you-” *laughs*

“Can I [Barbara] just help?” “Not you, not usually.” *sits back in doubt*

“So where’s that first aid kit?” *laughs* Ed’s like “I don’t wanna interrupt you two doing whatever but I’m gonna go make myself useful!”

“I’d [Eduardo] listen to her, Jim.” Shiit!

Mmmmmm.... dang it!

What the heck is PSYOPS?

AN: Oh my God...

“Civilians? This hellhole is infested with criminals and terrorists. Sometimes you just have to clean house, you know?” Ohhhhh God

“I’m not dead yet.” I’m still not dead yet!

*gasps when Ed marches in to kill Jim*

Ohhh it’s a fake out!

“If I die... you’ll never get... the evidence!” *laughs* Jim, your fake acting... is amazing.

*gasps when Ed throws a cleaver into one of the soldier’s heads* Ooohhhh my God!

*Jim and Ed leap over the bar table* YEET

*gasps when a bunch of injured robbers run by Oswald*

*chuckles at Selina eating cereal*

Oh my God... she’s eating Cocoa Pebbles!

*Oswald finds some fingers near Selina* Oh my God.

“I [Selina] killed Jeremiah Valeska.” Sure Jan.

This kinda feels like a filler episode so far but it’s... not.

“White hair, feathered collar, kinda resembles a goth chicken?” *giggles*

“What makes you [Oswald] think I [Selina] would help you after you killed Tabitha in cold blood?” *gasps* Shoot, she did find out! Barbara probably told her when she threw that little party.

*laughs when Oswald gives Selina an incredulous look*

“Ethan, Sumiko. We’re moving to Phase 2.” What the heck is Phase 2?

Are they gonna kill... prisoners?

*gasps when Eduardo shoots a couple of prisoners dead*

Oh my God... it’s that one episode of “Game of Thrones” where they thought about eliminating prisoners but Tywin Lannister stepped in at the last minute and made them all workers.

What. Is. Everyone’s Plan?

“Well, if you would be more careful, I [Ed] wouldn’t potato all the long legs from the hidden spoon!” What?

“I [Lucius] believe the chip is installed against his speech center.” “Hmm. Do it again.” *laughs*

*Please don’t habituate the curtain rod!” *gives Ed a confused look*

OK, why is Ed still awake when they’re removing something from his head?

“Thank you, Lucius.” *applauds*

“It appears the chip retains an audio log of every verbal communication with Nygma while he was under.” What?

“It has to be Walker. They won’t be able to sweep this under the rug anymore.” How would they be able to spread the message to other people?

“We have someone here who wants to say hello.” *gasps* Oh my God, it’s Lee!

*gasps when Lee is revealed* LEE!

WHAT?!?

Oh God, please don’t tell me she has a chip in her brain too!

“Tell me, how how many ex-fiancees do you [Jim] have anyway?” God... dammit!

“She’s a criminal and all criminals in Gotham are now under a death sentence.” *eyes widen in shock*

“A trade, perhaps? Lee Thompkins for Ed Nygma.” Eeugh!

“Fine.” What.

“OK. I’ll play your game.” *mutters* Oh my God...

“What would it take to broadcast the information from the chip to the mainland?” “A transmitter, which I [Lucius] have, and a very large antenna, which I do not.” Isn’t there one at the GCPD?

“I [Jim] know where’s an antenna in the Green Zone but you’re not gonna like it.” “The roof of the GCPD.” Yep.

Oh my God, please don’t me she [Lee] has a chip in her head too. I’m gonna be so head if she turns out to have a chip in her brain. She does not deserve all of this shit that’s happened.

*Bruce and Co. suit up* Whoa, what is all that?

I really love how Ben McKenzie is directing this episode so far. These shots here like the Western showdown camera angles- this is so good.

*Jim holds up the chip* It’s a fake.

*drops jaw when Jim starts listing off the people killed under Eduardo’s leadership in the military*

“Yeah... put a bullet in my mouth and shut me [Jim] up.” Oooh hoo hoo!

“No. Not a bullet. But I [Eduardo] am gonna shut your mouth. Once and for all...” Oh my God...

“The fact that one man was able to safely house and rescue hundreds of innocent civilians showed the military higher-ups that the criminal element of Gotham must not be so big and scary after all. They were ready to send in relief, so it had to come down.” What?

“They were innocent people, children!” “They were an acceptable loss for the mission.” What’s the mission?!?

*Jim football tackles Eduardo to the ground* Oooooh!

*Jim starts punching Eduardo* Oh, go! Go Jim!

“Take her [Lee] out back and shoot her.” What?!?

*jaw drops in horror* No!

Get up, Jim! C’mon!

*gasps when Jim shoots down one of the soldiers*

“I know the answer!” “Nope, don’t think you do, Bullock.” *laughs*

“High school was a long time ago, so let’s just take the full minute, shall we?” *still laughs*

“The pallid beach mouse is extinct!” *jaw drops in shock*

“Trust me on this, I got in trouble and had to write an essay about it, I swear to God.” *giggles and reels back in chair* OK but like Harvey remembering that one distant fact is such a mood!

*The soldiers fire at Ed* Guys, he’s wearing Kevlar.

But that is still extremely funny though.

Is that knockout gas?

*laughs when Ed triumphantly and weakly throws his fist in the air*

*gasps when Eduardo kicks Jim on the ground*

“You want to know why Ramirez and the rest didn't make it out? After your tour of duty was up, we were caught behind enemy lines, taken to the darkest hell on Earth: Pena Duro!” *gasps*

“It’s where we were left to die by our government..” *jaw drops* Oh my God...

AN: Why wasn’t this episode called “Pena Dura” or whatever?

*gasps in horror when Eduardo drives a metal rod into Jim’s side*

*gasps and reels back in shock when Jim manages to impale Eduardo on a bunch of Haven debris* OH MY GOD!

Oh my God! Wait, so that’s how he becomes Bane?!? Because he got freaking impaled?!?

*gasps when Jim finds Lee surrounded by dead soldiers* What?!?

*slightly impressed* Lee...

“Unless The diamond is worth something on the mainland.. and I bet you have way more where that came from. You're [Oswald] leaving Gotham.” Why?

“‘Alexander the Great then looked upon his land and wept, for there was nothing left to conquer.’“ So?

“I [Selina] don’t want to be the person that killed Jeremiah Valeska.” ‘Cause he’s not dead!

“I gotta be honest with you, man. I don’t know how many more of these close calls this old heart can take.” Harvey, you better not.

“I’m [Ed] not gonna wait around to watch their [Lee and Jim’s] touching reunion.” *laughs*

Oh, Barbara’s gonna go get jealous now? OK, I see where this is freaking going.

“The last thing that I [Lee] remember is Jeremiah destroying the bridges.” Wait, she doesn’t remember stabbing Ed? What?!?

“Wait... oh... he stabbed me.” OK, wh-wh- wait, she does remember.

“There was so much blood.” Not really.

Jesus... they just left him [Eduardo] there?!?

*gasps when someone shoots a refugee trying to pick Eduardo’s pockets* Oh my God, is that Walker?

“Eduardo...” How is he still alive?

Where have I seen the actress [that plays Walker] before?

AN: Apparently she (Jaime Murray] also plays the Black Fairy on “Once Upon a Time”

“You won’t die yet, my warrior.” *grimaces*

“Professor Strange will have you fixed up in no time.” Oh my God...

*gasps when Walker puts the mask on Eduardo and activates it*

“Nyma was never alone. It was a second operative.” It’s Lee! It’s freaking Lee. God dammit, Lee.

*Lee’s chip activates* Oh goddammit!

“Time to die, Jim Gordon.” God- no no no no no!

*gasps when Jim manages to short out Lee*

*sits back and slaps table* God! Dammit!

*groans* Oh my God, this not- noo-oohh...

*claps hands at screen* This is the- the- Jeremiah’s gonna come in and- oh my God...

Mmmmm...

*jaw drops in shock when Jeremiah knocks out Alfred*

Holy crap, how- so, uh, how did that happen?

*imitates the way Jeremiah says “Pennyworth”*

Wait, did she [Magpie] just get stabbed?!?

*gasps when Magpie begs Selina and Oswald to remove the buckshot from her collarbone*

*gasps when Oswald shoots Magpie dead*

“Just a little reminder of what happens when people try to steal from me!” Oh my God!

I wanted to see her again! DANG IT!

“You remember the good time we had the other night, over there?” Shut the hell up!

“I’m [Barbara] pregnant.” :O

“Congratulations?” *laughs*

*grimaces and flinches when Jeremiah slowly flicks the bottom of Alfred’s chin*

“Today is the big day.” *jaw drops in shock*

My 17 Favorite Records of 2017

Hello, Internet. Yet another year has passed, and because I’ve made a habit of making year-end lists, this old man has gone and done it again.

I listened to a veritable buttload of music this year on my morning runs, which I decided to post about on Instagram most days in a concerted effort to keep myself accountable bore every last one of my followers to death. I think it’s working.

What follows, is my list of favorites. Not “best”. “Favorite”. *My* favorite. So, spare me the “Your list sucks. WTF. I can’t believe “A Vest For Jerome” by Turd Circus isn’t on there!” comments. I’m sorry we don’t have the exact same taste in music. :)

As usual, I feel like the top 5 or 6 here are pretty carved in stone, but the last 12 and some of the honorable mentions could totally be flip-flopped depending on which side of the bed I woke up on. I actually fiddled with a few spots five minutes before posting this, which is either a testament to that or Exhibit 4,923 in my undiagnosed OCD case.

Anyways ... TL;DR. Here’s what I was into this year. I hope you find something you enjoy.

17) Japandroids - Near To The Wild Heart Of Life

This didn’t quite grab me the way Celebration Rock did, but it’s got a good number of super infectious earworms that got stuck in my brain at the top of the year.

16) Sorority Noise - You’re Not As ____ You Think

Excellent “emo”with that feels like it could very easily fit into Brand New’s discography (and I mean that in a very complimentary way). Highly recommended if you’re looking for something to fill that void.

15) Queens of the Stone Age - Villains

This took a little while for this record to sink its teeth into me, but once it did, it didn’t let go. The arrangements are so nuanced that I’ve found little bits of ear candy each time I’ve listened to it, and while the mix is not my favorite, the songs are so brilliantly catchy and drumming so monstrous, I’m hooked. And Jon Theodore is the best drummer on Earth. That’s not debatable either. It’s fact.

14) David Bazan - Care

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for anything and everything Bazan. His lyrics and the timbre of his voice cut to my core, and the songs on Care are no exception -- even when they’re delivered over minimalist electronica (which is not my favorite vehicle by any stretch). Another Bazan masterpiece.

13) Glassjaw - Material Control

This record is perfect in that it is exactly what it needs to be. It’s Glassjaw doing what they do best -- intense, vibey, groovy, heavy post-hardcore that is a logical follow-up to Worship & Tribute, while flexing and pushing enough to make it feel fresh. A tremendous return to form, and a record that was well worth the wait.

12) Julien Baker - Turn Out The Lights

Sprained Ankle blew me away and knocked me on my ass, and somehow, some way, Baker has leveled up and topped that. The stripped-down “artist + guitar” intimacy is still there, but the heavy moments hit even harder because of the additional orchestration on this record. Such a promising future for her.

11) The Life & Times - S/T

Another excellent record from some of one of Kansas City’s best bands. There are few who do airy, melancholic, spacey, dynamic rock better than these guys. And Chris Metcalf is one of the best drummers on the planet right now -- so pockety, tasteful, and effortless. Highly recommended if you dig Failure, Shiner, Hum, Antenna-era Cave In, et al.

10) METZ - Strange Peace

This beast is 36 minutes of noisy, nasty, heavy post-punk with stellar guitar and bass tones, and badass drumming that sounds like the best parts of Nirvana and Young Widows had a perfect lovechild. I dare you to listen to this record and not have an overwhelming urge to play it as loud as you possibly can and headbang until your eyes fall out of your skull.

9) CHON - Homey

I really enjoyed this when it came out, but it wasn’t until we spent five weeks on tour with them and got to see them shred a handful of these songs on a nightly basis that it really grabbed ahold of me. This record is stellar. Sure there are a ton of notes, but they’re all tasteful, never bogged down in painfully long prog opuses, and there’s so much feel here ... which is so rare in the new world of insanely chopped, gridded and sampled prog. The splashes of hip-hop and glitchy Prefuse 73 style electronica are a killer addition to the mix as well. This is the feel good record of the year for me.

8) Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.

There really isn’t another rapper who holds a candle to Kendrick at the moment, and this might be the best work of his career. I haven’t had a hip-hop record hit me like this in at least a decade. I was hooked from the second the beat dropped in DNA., got roped in even more by the slow jam LOVE., and HUMBLE. sealed the deal. What a beast.

7) Cloud Nothings - Life Without Sound

This record rules, but I’m not sure I can put my finger on exactly why I like it so much. It’s got tiny elements of so many bands I love or used to love without being overly referential. It’s got a melancholic vibe but never lacks energy. And it is packed with really, really well written and catchy songs without full-blown pop circus. You know you’re listening to a great record when you’re playing a deep cut and uncontrollably blurt, “Fuck, this song is good.”

6) Converge - The Dusk In Us

Nobody does it better than these dudes, and it’s been that way for the better part of two decades. The Dusk In Us is yet another record a discography full of bar-setting hardcore/metal/noise records that elevate the ceiling of the genre and make everyone else sound/look bland in comparison. This one slides right into the #3 or #4 spot in that storied discography. So great.

5) Manchester Orchestra - A Black Mile To The Surface

This is one of those rare records that blows you away on first listen, and gets better with each subsequent listen. The former happens when the songs --stripped to their bones -- are stellar, and the latter happens when the arrangements and mix are somehow even more stellar. ABMTTS checks the shit outta both of those boxes and then some. Aaaand it was made with multiple producers, but doesn’t sound disjointed in the slightest, which seems damn near impossible. It’s the perfect Manchester Orchestra record ... “The Gold” was stuck pleasantly in my head for a majority of the year.

4) Pile - A Hairshirt Of Purpose

Disclaimer: I am a late adopter of the majesty of Pile, but I am happy to announce that I am hopelessly hooked on their soulful, noisy, schizophrenic, (occasionally) dreamy, fusion of post-punk, blues, and all sorts of other good things. My entry point was Dripping, but A Hairshirt ... cemented my love for this band. It’s weird, it’s beautiful, it’s energetic, it’s heavy, it’s ethereal, and the musicianship is frustratingly good. If you know, you know ... if you don’t, just trust me. Spin it with an open mind and meet one of your new favorite bands.

3) Propagandhi - Victory Lap

I grew up on Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords punk rock in the 90s, and these guys (and gal) are legitimately the only band of that era that continue to excite and inspire me. I look forward to every release, and they manage to deliver every. single. time. It’s not a nostalgia thing with Propagandhi. Chris Hannah’s lyrics, melodies, and guitar playing continue to push the boundaries of what can be done in that genre. You might expect a group of 40-year-old punks to decline or at least plateau, but they’re still on an upward trajectory and it’s inspiring as hell. Bonus points if you’re a parent and can listen to “Adventures In Zoochosis” without tearing up. Victory Lap is outstanding -- one of their three best records without question.

2) Cloakroom - Time Well

If you’ve been following me here, on Twitter, or Instagram, it’s no secret that I’ve got a massive soft spot in my heart for bummer jams -- especially bummer jams of the heavy variety. Time Well is a damn near perfect in those regards. It’s shoegazey without being tired or overly jangly, mildly doomy without being mind-numbingly boring, and fuzzy without sounding like it was recorded inside a sleeping bag. I’m pretty sure I listened to this record more than anything else this year, and after probably a hundred spins, it hasn’t lost any of its luster. It’s outstanding (and it’s got some damn tasty drumming on it too).

1) Elder - Reflections Of A Floating World

My buddy Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City vocalist/guitarist, Antisleep recording engineer/producer, multi-talented human, generally outstanding dude, recommender of many amazing bands) turned me on to these guys earlier this year by sharing 2015′s Lore with me. That record f-ing floored me. Riffs for days. Heaviness. Prog vibes. Stoner rock goodness. Dynamics. Space. Sabbath-y vocals. It checked all of the boxes. Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to hear Reflections Of A Floating World.

ROAFW dropped in June, and it’s even better than I could have imagined. I’d wager that there are more sick riffs on this record than your favorite band has in their entire discography. I dare you to listen to this and not get a twitch to start a play air guitar. Also: How the shit do you write 15-minute songs that don’t bore people into catatonia? This is how. Just like this. Parts never drag, parts never feel like they’re just filler, and there isn’t a wasted moment in 64 minutes of music. That’s a remarkable feat in and of itself. This is a goddamn timeless record, and there’s no doubt I’ll have it in heavy rotation for the rest of my life.

Since the early 80s Montesano, Washington’s the Melvins have remained consistent in delivering hard/stoner rock music of the highest order. Their latest album, ‘Pinkus Abortion Technician’, sees the rugged veterans switching up their template and formula whilst keeping their sounds familiar and contemporary. Led by the iconic Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover and with over 25 albums under their belt, calling the Melvins prolific is an understatement, and their live shows are no exception either…

After a prolonged period of pre-arrival chatter, the cramped stage is taken up by Buzz, Dale and co. King Buzzo is clad in what can only be described as a religious robe of sorts with one eyes scattered on his chest. I’ve managed at this point to teeter around the edge next to some mammoth speakers which may result in a good view, but may not be so good for my hearing!

The Melvins pretty much remain in top gear from the outset and there’s no fancy lighting or props required whatsoever. The band’s newer members are spurred on by Buzz and Dale’s determined exuberance and thrashing onstage.

‘The Kicking Machine’ and ‘Anaconda’ set the pace for a rowdy atmosphere as the crowd are more or less glued to each other given the small capacity. Myself, I take ten steps back and look on, as opposed to getting engulfed in chucked beer and sweat. In front of me are hardcore Melvins fans from yesteryear losing their shit - with tour t-shirts from the 90s and early noughties - dedicated fans indeed.

All killer and no filler is an apt description for this show at the midway point, unsurprising given the huge discography these guys have to choose from. Without pausing for breath the frenetic pace and high energy levels set by this group sees them recall gems from different eras.

Spare a thought for the Melvins however, there’s hardly much room to get around on such a small-scale stage. But hey, after kicking ass for so long I’m sure they’ve familiarised ways of delivering solid sets regardless. Yes, the claustrophobic feel does leave one feeling quite unsettled alongside a few tech issues - I’ve moved further back now for some space, ha! However, no breathers for the man in the spotlight: Buzz’s infamous hairdo surprisingly has no sign of sweat breaking out.

‘Moving to Florida’ and a cover of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Sway’ ensures the mass appeal throughout the venue remains explosive and loud. Elsewhere, there are singalongs and widespread applause from an audience indebted to hearing some 90s throwback classics.

Right until the very end the chaos remains uncensored and never overcomplicated with ‘Honey Bucket’ and ‘Night Goat’ getting monstrous responses respectively. And so the Melvins sign off in the knowledge that they’ll return and bludgeon our ears once again someday. These badass hombres armed with their towering tones and dedicated musicianship show no sign of slowing down. Yup, the Melvins will no doubt continue to withstand the test of time and remain significant for years to come.

Il 2005 è l’anno di uscita dell’album Happy Live Surprise, registrato a Londra; in seguito hanno partecipato ad un tour negli Stati Uniti con i Good Charlotte ed aperto i concerti dei Motley Crue. Nel 2007 è uscito il quinto album Underclass Hero che condivide il titolo con il primo singolo. With Me è stato presentato con una performance live al Jimmy Kimmel Show sul canale americano ABC. Nel 2012 i Sum 41 hanno ricevuto una candidatura ai Grammy per la categoria miglior interpretazione hard rock/metal con il brano Blood in my eyes. Nell’ottobre 2016 è uscito 13 Voices, il sesto album di inediti; in occasione della pubblicazione i Sum 41 si sono esibiti al The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. 13 Voices ha raggiunto rapidamente la posizione numero 6 della classifica Billboard nella categoria migliori album. Il 19 luglio 2019 è stato pubblicato l’ultimo lavoro della band intitolato Order in Decline. Il disco ha esordito in top 20 nei principali mercati mondiali: USA, CANADA, Australia Germania, Austria, Svizzera Francia, Belgio. In Italia al # 26 Il primo estratto Out for Blood, ha ri catapultato direttamente nella Top 20 della classifica radio fonica americana di Billboard la band dopo oltre 14 anni, raggiungendo le posizioni numero 15 nella classifica Active Rock Radio e numero 1 della Sirius XM Octane. Successivamente sono usciti i singoli A Death In The Family, 45 (A Matter Of Time). Con “Never There”, il quarto singolo estratto dall’Album, è stato il turno dell’Europa: il brano è stato per tutta L’estate 2019 uno dei brani rock più trasmessi dalle radio Europee. Questo disco prosegue sulla scia del successo che hanno avuto dopo il ritorno da un periodo molto buio. Ispirati sin dagli esordi da band del calibro di Green Day, Blink 182, NOFX, Beastie Boys ed Iron Maiden nel corso degli anni i Sum 41 hanno spaziato da canzoni irriverenti e spensierate (presenti specialmente nei primi album) a tematiche a contenuto sociale. Here Are The 15 Best Sum 41 Songs According To The Amity Affliction, The Plot In You And More

Look, it’s not every day one of your favorite bands from your childhood asks you to go on tour with them. However, for genre-blending post-hardcore act The Plot In You (especially bassist Ethan Yoder), that’s exactly what happened for the upcoming Order In Decline World Tour.

“My friends and I used to listen to Sum 41 a lot when we were first getting into playing music and starting bands,” explains Yoder. “I was about 11 years old and ‘In Too Deep’ came out with the release of All Killer, No Filler. I remember having my newspaper route, waking up in the mornings watching that music video and listening to other iconic bands of the time like Blink 182, Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy and Green Day. It was such a great time for music and to be at this point in my musical career and having the honor to play alongside [an] influential band is really exciting.”

As for Sum 41 and The Plot In You’s soon-to-be tourmates The Amity Alliction, bassist/vocalist Ahren Stringer shares a similar sentiment to Yoder saying:

“I remember watching channel V (an old Australian music channel on cable) at home with my sister when I was about 12 years old and we were super into punk and metal (they barely played much of either, mind you). The first time we saw ‘Fat Lip’ come on TV we were like ‘HOLY SHIT! THIS FUCKING RULES!’ It’s such a sick video and song, it still gets me pumped. One of those instant classic songs that I think our entire generation can get as stoked when we hear it as we did the first time in our living rooms.”

See, like a lot of you reading this, Sum 41 has been that band that either got us into punk rock and pop-punk or they helped us realize there’s a lot better music out there than what they play on the radio. Whether it was the breakout All Killer, No Filler, the beloved Does This Look Infected?, the harder-hitting Chuck or any other of the band’s brilliant releases -- including their recent LP Order In Decline -- there’s no denying that the Candian five-piece has impacted bands and fans all across the globe.

I remember when I first saw the video for this song and I was like, “Holy shit!” It’s still spun all the time by us in the van, one of those songs that’ll always take you back to when you first heard it.

If you’ve been following this blog with any regularity, you may have noticed how often references to R.E.M. weave their way into my appraisals of other artists. That’s because the band has become a bit of a Rosetta Stone for my musical taste: eclectic, ever-evolving, beautifully melodic, with evocative (or downright inscrutable) lyrics. I delved into their decades-long catalogue- piecemeal and out of chronology in the pre-Spotify days- at the exact point in my adolescence when I was forming what that taste would be. And now I must ask the question that has so ignited the public's curiosity: When did I first hear of the band R.E.M.?

My answer, at long last, is… "Hmm, not sure." As recounted in my entry on Barenaked Ladies (or “BNL,” as befitting such an essential band): during a high school trip through Europe, a bus ride from Ireland to Wales was scored by an all-over-the-map mixtape.* I was definitely already familiar with “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” when it popped up. And I remember, sitting there as misty green hills moved past the window, that it sparked a web of associations: I likely thought of “Losing My Religion,” probably “The One I Love.” After watching a Comedy Central documentary on Andy Kaufman, I became briefly obsessed, and my mom helpfully told me that there was a song written about him, titled “Man on the Moon.” She pulled Automatic for the People, the only R.E.M. release she owned, off the shelf and played that track for me. I think I liked it, but I didn’t go further than that.

So, sitting on that tour bus, I figured that when we reached the London leg of our whirlwind trip, I would use my personal pilgrimage to Virgin Megastore (remember those?) to pick up a greatest hits collection. And I did, getting the recently released In Time: The Best of R.E.M. I loved it so much, I barely noticed that half the songs I knew, including the one that had inspired the purchase, were nowhere to be found.

As I later learned, that compilation was put out by Warner Bros Records, and as such was solely focused on the songs the band recorded while under contract to that label. And it’s true, several of their biggest hits came out of those first few WB releases. But wither “The One I Love?” Well, before they signed that lucrative deal, R.E.M. made their bones putting out arty, jangly, pastorally pretty rock music under the banner of I.R.S. Records.

It’s been awhile since I first heard their debut full-length Murmur (#183), but after the slicker, weirder, string-flavored tunes I was used to, hearing the upfront immediacy of the young-and-hungry band, playing as a tight group over a chasm of reverb, was a bit revelatory. Recorded at the now-defunct Reflection Sound Studios in Charlotte, NC (a liner note discovery that filled me with no small amount of regional pride), Don Dixon and Mitch Easter's production makes the jangle rock dreamy and beguiling while avoiding cheesy 80’s pitfalls. It’s all killer, no filler (I even love “We Walk,” all bouncy repetition and ever-climbing arpeggios)— right now, I’d say the earnest “Talk About The Passion” and the almost hiccupy hook of “Catapult” rank as my favorite moments, but that changes and shifts unpredictably.

The sonic muscle of Reckoning (#184) is cleaner, with opener “Harborcoat” immediately shaking loose the spooky cobwebs of Murmur. Again, the immediacy surprised me when I first heard it: I was hearing the version of the band that tore the roof off of tiny venues in sleepy college towns throughout the South. For a time, it was the comparative lack of the fussy arrangements and earnest, soaring melodies I’d come to expect from my R.E.M. that dismissed this album to a dusty gray corner in my mind. But the mark of a Favorite Band means that you can return to their work at different times in your life and find that while the music stayed the same, you’re hearing it with different ears. There’s not a weak link in 10 tracks, and songs that I’d once had trouble even recalling became new favorites: "So. Central Rain,” with its ringing Rickenbacker guitar line, melodic bass, and keening chorus (“I’m sorry”) is a fan favorite for a reason, and “Camera,” which recalls a departed friend of the band’s, builds to a shattering chorus. And of course, the one straight-up, tear-in-your-beer country rocker in their catalogue, “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville."

I remember driving to night classes in my first year of community college, listening to my newly-purchased disc of Fables of the Reconstruction (#185). Now this was immediately my speed, with the spooky, menacing, string quartet-inflected “Feeling Gravity’s Pull” and incantatory “Maps and Legends" leading the pack. The band had a lousy experience recording it, and they badmouth the way the songs were mixed, but to me the thick-as-kudzu production is a big part of this album’s hallucinatory power. I love the surreal, umber and burnished gold and chartreuse cover art as well: though the layout looks a little too cluttered on the CD, I bought the vinyl record from a second-hand store just to frame it, with the “Reconstruction of the Fables” ear-box side facing out from my wall.

Not every track does it for me. “Can’t Get There from Here” is fun but a little too affected in its whimsy, and “Auctioneer (Another Engine),” already a bit monotone, is the track most hampered by sludgy sound. But sandwiched in-between are “Green Grow the Rushes” and “Kohoutek,” glimpses of the environmentally-conscious, culturally-sensitive side of Michael Stripe and Co that led directly into their follow-up, Lifes Rich Pageant (#186). They expand the promise of those two tracks with “Fall On Me” and “Cuyahoga,” to devastatingly pretty effect.

Where Fables was a nighttime drive down an inky-dark American highway, Pageant is a wide-eyed survey of virgin prairie, a longing to return to unspoiled harmonic existence. “Let’s put our heads together / Let’s start a new country up,” the natives of “Cuyahoga” resolve over the ashy remains of the river bend. "What you want and what you need, there's the key / Your adventure for today, what do you do / Between the horns of the day?” Stipe exhorts his listeners in “I Believe,” and the Southern beach rock behind the words pushes you to make your move. “We are young despite the years / We are concern / We are hope despite the times,” he belts out over furious riffs and annihilated drums in “These Days," Mike Mills calling out affirmation in his backup vocal.

Right down to the absurdist sea shanty “Swan Swan H” and infectiously fun cover “Superman” that close it out, it’s hard to find a more consistent document of the band’s strengths. And now, damn, I want that to be a crackerjack segue to discussion of their next studio album, but months before that final I.R.S. release, there was Dead Letter Office (#187). A collection of occasionally rather sloppy outtakes and covers of varying reverence, the main draw here is the inclusion of their debut EP Chronic Town (on the CD, anyway. I notice that Spotify separates those songs from the DLO tracks). The angular menace of “Wolves, Lower” and the subtle, melodic magic of “Gardening At Night” (Stripe’s almost unintelligible lyrics are Exhibit A for his early-years shyness) are justifiable fan favorites to this day— not bad for the first batch of songs from such a prolific group. A must.

Buying Document (#188) finally gave me easy access to “It’s The End of the World...” and “The One I Love” (rather than, you know, waiting to hear one or the other on the radio). It also meant first experiencing one of my favorite opening salvos on record: “Finest Worksong.” It sounds HUGE, to borrow an oft-accurate phrase from notable actor/R.E.M. podcaster Adam Scott. Bill Berry’s thundercrack drums echo as if recorded in a cavernous factory where the overlords have been overthrown, while Peter Buck’s guitar chugs and drones, a dramatic change from the nimble arpeggios that made up previous records. It, and the songs that follow— “Welcome to the Occupation” ("Listen to the buyer still / Listen to the Congress / Where we propagate confusion”), “Exhuming McCarthy” ("Vested interest, united ties / Landed gentry, rationalize / Look who bought the myth / By Jingo, buy America”), “Disturbance at the Heron House”— make the album, at 31 years old, feel like a queasy reflection of our current milieu. No one feels fine right now.

Luckily, the music is still driving, fun, singable, varied in its grooves and moods. “Fireplace,” coming right after the twofer of the most famous singles, provided me such an unexpected thrill with a rare appearance by sinuous be-bop saxophone, such a different color for this band. Sax in 80’s songs is usually an utterly cheeseball affair, but this is a dark, weird tune, and is nowhere near that register of power balladry. “Lightnin’ Hopkins” is just as unique, with a metalhead rolling drum beat and Stipe acting like a throat-shredded street preacher over echoey chain-gang backup howls.

This band takes up a whole shelf in my house, so hold on tight for several more comprehensive and encyclopedic write-ups.

*It’s been over a year since I wrote that entry, and I recently realized my memory is jumbled up. I now have a clear recollection that the songs from BNL’s Everything For Everyone were repeating in my head ON THAT VERY TRIP! So I was already a fan.
