New toys? Don’t mind if I do!⠀ ⠀ I recently got some new sturdy backdrops. I purchased two boards, both double sided, but I had to try out this classic subway tile first. There was a nice contrast between the food and light colored boards. ⠀ ⠀ Two sets of double sided boards, plus brackets, are included in the set I bought. When @DomntheCity shared how she’s enjoyed her @snapitboards , along with other research, I decided these would be my first boards. I usually use flexible roll up backgrounds, but needed something more reliable. ⠀ ⠀ I’ve only used them a couple times, but so far I am finding them more convenient than the pliable backdrops I’ve been using. Friday's are for pizza!...and Black Food! It's Black Food Fridays!⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Not long ago I won a giftcard from @willdrinkfortravel and guess what I chose, PIZZA! Not just any pizza but Motown Square pizza. I've been wanting to try Motown since before they opened but was too sick on the day of the opening to make it. Ever since I've been dreaming about trying Motown, but they were selling out FAST!⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I finally caught up with them a couple weeks. This Detroit style pizza is created by Chef Paulos Belay. Originally from Detroit, and missing home he decided to bring one of his hometown favorites to DC, with an Ethiopian twist. Motown now offers six different combinations of toppings. I must have sausage on my pizza so I was so happy when they recently added a sausage pizza to the menu. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The Motor City comes with Wisconsin brick cheese, mozzarella, sausage, ricotta, crushed tomatoes, hot honey and parsley. You can tell Motown uses quality ingredients as soon as you take the first bite. The sausage was tender, the ricotta was nice and creamy, and the hot honey added a nice sweet and spicy flavor. The crust was buttery and crispy, but I'm a saucy girl so of course I added a side of sauce for dipping.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ If you're trying to order I encourage you to get your orders in as soon as you can. New Flexitarian here! 👋🏾 ...Maybe 🤔...kinda👀...I don’t know. 🤷🏾‍♀️⁠ ⁠ I’ve always been a meat eater, but in the past five years or so I’ve at least been open to trying more vegetarian dishes and meat replacements. Also for the past couple years, before the panorama, we would start the year off with a pescatarian diet. I don’t believe in ‘diet culture’, but going forward I plan to make changes to my lifestyle and focus on being intentional about incorporating more plant based foods. ⁠ ⁠ So far this week baked fish and salads have been my friend. To move beyond baked fish and salad I need to plan a menus for the week. 😳 I already follow so many great plant based bloggers who I know will provide some great inspiration. I also have the cookbook Afro-Vegan by Bryant Terry and I already have the ingredients for sweet plantain and corn fritters. 😋⁠ ⁠ I’m not sure if I’d ever give up meat or seafood but I’m looking forward to trying more vegetarian and vegan dishes when I check out restaurants. You’ve been patiently waiting and it’s finally here, Black Food Fridays!!⁠ ⁠ This week I’ve been devoting some time to @DMVBlackFoodies, some things for next week, blog things, and some future projects. In the midst of working and brainstorming I remembered I have a gift card from the Spice Kitchen Grill who invited me to try their Urban West African food. ⁠ ⁠ Spice Kitchen serves West African street food, specifically Suya. The spice filled grilled meat pairs perfectly with jollof rice, Spinach Efo-Riro, or plantains. Drizzle on their spicy stew of peppers, onions and spice. We tried the steak, chicken, salmon, and shrimp. 👌🏾⁠ ⁠ This wing though. The Spicy Honey wings are a newer addition to the menu but I hope they stay. If ever there was a weekend to order in, this is the one.⁠ ⁠ It’s been snowy, rainy, icy, and icy rain. 🥶 Today happens to be Valentine’s Day ❤️and with cold temps I’m ready for some good food and some snuggles. I started my morning off with tea but my mind was on this brunch package I got from Ted’s Bulletin. The portions were so big. ⁠ ⁠ I’ve been a fan of Ted’s Tarts for years, they have a large bakery counter with tarts, cakes, and all the goodies. I would usually just grab a tart on my way home, but I was gifted a brunch package so I decided to give it a try. The food held up well on the way home and even though it was for four, it was still a LOT of food. Can food be a Valentine? 🤔⁠ ⁠ We might normally be celebrating Valentine’s Day away from home. One of our favorite trips was to Montreal. We found a great hotel right in the middle of the city. We had a nice dinner nearby. Our room even had a fireplace, which was perfect because it was nice and snowy.⁠ ⁠ This year we plan to decorate and have a nice dinner at home. I’m not sure if there will be snow but it’ll definitely be cold. I’m just looking forward to a quiet evening at home, no crazy news, just me and Hubbs.⁠ ⁠ What do y’all have planned? “Why would I stop?!” - Big Sean ...possibly also Chef Rock Harper⁠ ⁠ I’ve been keeping my eye on Chef Rock since 2007 when we watched his journey to winning season three of Hell’s Kitchen. Through the magic of social media I’ve been able to follow Chef Rock’s continued success, and I was super excited when I moderated an event where he was a panelists. So when I heard that he was opening his own restaurant I knew whatever it was I had to be in the building.⁠ ⁠ Queen Mother’s offers juicy, crunchy, satisfying fried chicken sandwiches. The menu includes Virginia Honey Butter, Nashville Hot Fried Chicken, a Classic Fried Chicken Sandwich, and a Southside Club. As soon as I saw that sauce I knew I needed the Classic in my life. The Classic is an eight ounce brined chicken breast, cooked in duck fat and canola. If that wasn’t enough, the chicken is served on a toasted brioche bun with Mother Sauce and crisp dill pickles. 🙌🏾⁠ ⁠ All of Queen Mother’s chicken is local, antibiotic, and cage free. My sandwich was all that I hoped for, juicy, crispy, well seasoned, and balanced perfectly by the sauce and crisp dill pickles. Now I know it’s not about the fries, BUT go ahead and bless your life and get these fries. 👀 The Seasoned Waffle Fries are cooked in duck fat and canola, and seasoned with their signature Queen's Spice. I have all my snacks, some hearty food, and I'm ready for SNOW!!⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Apparently we'll be getting several inches of snow in the DC area. Can we do a throwback Whiskey Wednesday? 🥃🥃⠀ ⠀ I said I was going to start going through my camera to catch up on my sharing so Throwback Whiskey Wednesday it is! Over the holidays I got some great rest but still enjoyed some great food and drinks. Y’all know I have a nice lol whiskey collection but I’m always here for trying something new, and cocktails are on the list. For Thanksgiving Hubbs went over to one of our favorite spots for happy hour, JackRose, to get us a “Drink Your Thanksgiving” cocktail kit! ⠀ ⠀ The kit came with five cocktails meant to be enjoyed in courses. Outside of the excitement of this cocktail flight, the names were also fun. Yam Casserole Old Fashioned, Cranberry & Potatoes, Ref a eye Turkey Day, Stuffing Daiquiri, and Black Forest Manhattan. ⠀ ⠀ The flavors were fun and absolutely reminded us of fall and were reminiscent of their names. The only one that we couldn’t quite get behind was the Manhattan. The vermouth may have been the culprit. No matter how many times we try, neither of us ever like it, but I’ll keep trying. ⠀ ⠀ We’re also funny about Cynar, artichoke liqueur, lol. I'm not sure how I feel about a day off in the middle of the week versus a nice long three day weekend. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ This Thursday is a busy one for me and when I'm busy I go for what's easy and that's takeout. I'm thinking back to last week when we tried FedWich and FedWings. Both are actually a pop-up collaboration between Federalist Pig & Kramerbooks located inside Kramerbooks. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I was gifted the sandwiches and wings and I have to say they won me over. I'm a meat eater but I I'm a fan of probably most mushrooms. There are so many varieties I may never try them all but when I saw a FauxWich on the menu I was curious. The Portobello cap was thick and savory, but caramelized onions and mushroom aioli were it for me. I felt like I was eating a messy burger and I didn't miss the meat. I offered Hubbs a bite and next thing I know half my sandwich is gone!⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ We also tried the Feddy Cheesteak which was pretty big and the cherry pepper aioli adds a nice tangy spice. Sooo...from someone who loves sauce I'll tell you they offer seven sauces. I had the Alabama White BBQ, Sticky Garlic, Hot Honey, and House Ranch. They were all good but my fave may have been the Hot Honey. Again, as someone who loooooves sauce, let me tell you, you don't need the sauce. The wings are perfect with the dry rub. This movie board keeps us company during our movie nights. I’m not gon lie, I need snacks for my movie watching and watching movies is one of my favorite things to do. Since there hasn’t been as many gatherings I haven’t been baking as much as I normally would but I have procured some sweets from some excellent chefs around the area. Sweets and comfort food will be my mood for the rest of the holiday season. That pie was so good, I WILL be getting another. Everything was decadent. Anything with cream cheese frosting 👌🏾. Happy Monday! I’m hoping everyone enjoyed their holiday. ⠀ ⠀ We started Thanksgiving morning with a long walk. Along the way I decided I wanted to make my grandmother’s dressing meaning I had to run out to the store, which of course had a line. 🙄⠀ Though we had a small menu for just the two of us, I completely underestimated how much time it would take to make everything. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Videos soon come. 😊⠀ ⠀ Today I have a full day of working on my business, checking things off of my to do list, and generally getting back into the swing of things. I took a few days off and tried to be very intentional about how I spent my time. I had time to do some much needed cleaning, get around to washing my hair, do some cooking, catch up on some TV (Am I the last person to see The Fresh Prince Reunion?), and just rest. Intentionality and Breaks have been my theme for the past few months, a theme that will follow me into 2021.⠀ ⠀ How did you all spend your holiday break?⠀ ⠀ —————————⠀ ⠀ Pictured is a bowl I made with some of my favorite vegetables. Before eating a bunch of sweets and carbs I wanted to make sure I got in some veggies. I’m feeling all the comfort food right now and rice and pasta are at the top of my list. ⠀ Last week we ordered lunch from one of my local faves. The corn fritters at the Shell Shack Seafood are everything to me. ⠀ ⠀ We really had to pull ourselves away from the corn fritters to get into our entrees, both were generous portions. The Milk River pasta was spicy and packed with flavor. Dwight had the Land and Sea with plantain rice, which is a favorite of mine, and he barley shared. The jerk chicken was moist and as always the sweet and saltiness of the plantain rice was on point. ⠀ ⠀ We also got to try the Candied Yam Cobbler.
