UPDATED DIFFERENCES IN THE FAMILY TREE CHALLENGE 2023
ahh, the differences in the family tree challenge or DITFT for short. this was, by far, one of my FAVORITE challenges to do when i still played the sims 4, alongside the disney legacy challenge and for the sims 3. the issue back then was that i could never finish generation one. now with my own lepacy following hix’s rules, i've been inspired and having a blast, but also don’t want to keep playing the same save and get bored! so what did i do? i decided to make a more updated DITFT challenge with a point system with the goal of wanting to get the most out of each generation, much like the completionist challenge.
the rules i am referencing/using are not mine. there are currently two sets of rules, one from 2010 which is the original challenge by angelofafallen and an updated version of that challenge, from the sims 3 forum website from 2012. now,  i haven’t changed too much but, but upon looking at the rules, it seemed that university, island paradise, seasons, and into the future were missing so that's been added!
the differences in the family tree challenge is essentially like the completionist challenge. you are taking each generation as a chance to explore each and every corner of the game and discover things you’ve never done before, hence why this and the completionist challenge are my favorite challenges by far. this challenge offers sixteen generations, but you can give or take a few if sixteen is too much for you. however, this has been expanded into TWENTY generations, but the total number being THIRTY SIX. HOLY CRAP! and that is including all the extra generational challenges. if that number is too much for you, then you can stick to the normal ten, or do however many gens you want!
FUN NOTE: you can spice this challenge up by randomizing each generation where you don’t go in the order of this challenge, so you may start out as a farmer, then end up a werewolf in the next generation, or begin as a resort owner, to living as a scientist in the next. the choice is yours! you can also choose to penalize yourself to make it a bit challenging and to kinda push you to reach the goals for each generation. really, its up to you!
rules under the cut!

Delarosa DITFT Challenge
Tumblr media
Florence Delarosa married Robi Monif, a Bluewater townie. technically my rules for the differences in the family tree challenge recommend that she marry a garden club member, but they have a lot of chemistry. He became a garden club member quite soon after they married.
The two of them have been very, very very focused on their garden, almost to the exclusion of everything else. That’s why their kids are a little younger than some of the others. Their daughter, Heather, and their son Moss are kind of being left to their own devices.
I don’t know yet which one of them is going to inherit. I think it’s going to be whichever one has the lower relationship with their parents, because the point of this challenge is kind of for each generation to be the opposite of the one before.

here is a link to the DITFT challenge (Differences in The Family Tree Challenge)  by the way! It’s my favourite challenge but I’ve made my own rules as usual as I play on long life span so I like to make things more difficult!

This challenge has been around since The Sims 3, so there are lots of different versions that have been adapted for The Sims 4. I’ve found two sets of rules that I feel fit my playstyle and combined them into one set, whilst making a few adjustments of my own.
You can find these rules here and here
This is a 24 generation legacy challenge, each one offering something new and different to the family tree. I see these ‘rules’ as a guide or suggestions, so any parts/ generations that don’t spark joy I won’t do.
I’m sharing this for anyone who would like to see my gameplay ‘rules’ and maybe they’ll inspire you to play this challenge too 🥰
And remember, the most important rule of any challenge, Have Fun!
Get yourself some water and a healthy snack, it’s a long read 😅
This is a long challenge, and whilst the intro to each generation leads on from the one before, you can start on any generation you like and pick and choose which ones you want to do when.
I’m following my own vague version of the standard legacy rules, you find these here if you’d like to have a read. I made a young adult sim in CAS and moved them onto a lot of my choosing (I think it was a 20x15) and built a tiny starter home (tiny living perks) with my 20k and went from there! I haven’t used cheats (yet!) and anything that comes with the game goes as far as I’m concerned! If my sim is offered 5k to get married, then it looks like I’m planning a wedding 😂
I choose my heir by the first born, however if I feel a spare fits the theme of the next generation better I’ll pick them instead. Their partner(s) can be anyone you like.
I use a custom life span set through MCCC that focuses around the calandar set at 28 days, so each generation is roughly 1-2 sim years long (babies I age up after a day or two when I get bored of them). I age up early if I want to move on before their birthdays.
Without this mod, I think normal - long life span is plenty of time! For an extra challenge you could play on short, who am I to tell you what to do 😂
I’ve tried to include at least one trait, aspiration, skill and world per generation as a guide or starting point for anyone who would like it, but of course they’re your sims, in your game, they can be whoever you want them to be! Feel free to choose which ever ones you like, you don’t need to use the ones I’ve suggested.
To complete one of the final goals, it’s suggested you have a portrait/ photo of each generation’s heir. It is also recommended that you keep any family urns/ graves or alternatively create a family graveyard lot to store them.
I’d also recommend copying these into a word doc and editing the bits you like/ don’t like so you have it to hand in case you'd like a reminder 💖
Differences in the Family Tree
1 - The Farmer
I never wanted much, just a small corner of the world to call my own and time to enjoy nature’s bounty.
On your 18th birthday your parents gifted you with a small plot of land and enough money to start the farm you’d always dreamt of. While others might be happy with a desk job, you wanted nothing more than to survive off the land and live simply.

the sims 4 it girls: a nine generation legacy challenge
i decided to create my own themed legacy challenge for the sims 4. this challenge is similar to challenges like nsb, ditft, etc. except this time it’s themed around the music it girls!
if you’re unaware, the music it girls refer to songs which sing about a specific girl by name (ex. jolene, hey there delilah, come on eileen, etc.). this challenge takes inspiration from 9 different it girls and each generation is based on one of them. besides that, the rules don’t differ from any other standard legacy challenge.
please tag me if you do this and use #itgirlslegacy because i’d love to see what you make of it! this is my first time designing a challenge for ts4 and my first post in the community, so feedback if very much appreciated!
rules below the cut
1 | ROSEMARY
“she ain't got no money, her clothes are kinda funny, her hair is kinda wild and free”
you start with humble beginnings. you don’t have much money, you really have no clue what you want to do in life, and most people are put off by your eccentric attitude. but you’ve never been bothered by what other people think. so, you set out into the world with nothing but a paintbrush, some fabric and a dream.
you love all creative outlets. you paint, cross-stich, knit, and might even pick up an instrument from time to time, but your real passion lies in fashion. you’re an out-of-the-box designer and always make sure that your own style reflects that. unfortunately, the world and the industry aren’t too kind to you, but nothing can tarnish your spirit (you’re lowkey a manic pixie dream girl oops)
traits: erratic, creative, lazy
aspiration: lady of the knits
job: fashion influencer
requirements:
start off homeless (or at least in a very inexpensive home) with no more than 1,000 simoleons
master painting, cross-stitching, and knitting skills
play an instrument as a side hobby
have one kid
visit the flea market whenever it comes into town
2 | DELILAH
“hey there delilah, what's it like in new york city? i'm a thousand miles away, but girl tonight you look so pretty.”
you could always respect your parents’ and their humble, quirky ways, but it was never you. ever since you were a kid, you were more reclusive than others, preferring the company of yourself and your big dreams above anyone else. so, you immediately set your goals high. you have your life all planned out by high school. you’ll go to college, graduate with an honors degree, move to the city, get a job as a tech guru, and excel in your field.
you fall in love with a musician in college and dream of spending the rest of your lives together. the issue is you have very different wants out of life. while your partner wants a carefree life, living every day on a whim, you’ve had your life planned out since day one. you have your ambitions high, and your plans set and you aren’t willing to give that up on anything, even the love of your life. so, you break up. you graduate, pack your bags, and head to the city, swearing to never look back.
and for a while, life is everything you planned it would be. you enter a successful career, work your way to a successful life, and balance a very minimal social life on the side. until one day, you see them again. out of the blue, the one person you swore to never think about again, your ex, shows up in right in front of you. they’re different now, more mature, more committed. and all of a sudden, you realize for the first time, that you’re different too. it turns out neither of you ever really moved on, so you give it another shot.
and it’s everything you dreamed. the two of you stay together, have kids, and you’re proud to say you’ve got the best of both worlds.
traits: perfectionist, ambitious, genius
aspiration: city native
occupation: tech guru
requirements:
live in san myshuno
have no more than three kids
master photography and programming skills
have a relationship with a musician in college
get back together later in life & stay with them
3 | ROXANNE
“roxanne, you don't have to wear that dress tonight, walk the streets for money. you don't care if it's wrong or if it's right.”
growing up in the city introduced you to the darker aspects of the world young. you grew up a bit of a cynic with no intentions of changing anytime soon. while you knew your parents loved you, they were often too preoccupied with work to pay you much attention. so, you used your street smarts and found entertainment where you could: the neighbor’s houses–more specifically, their prized possessions.
so, you were a bit of a delinquent, often getting in trouble at school and realistically earning some time in juvenile detention centers if it weren’t for your stealth and superb ability to get yourself out of any situation.
you skipped the whole college deal and got right to what you did best: crime and mischief. you’re content working alone until you meet your polar opposite, a wide-eyed, naive sweetheart who sees the good in you and makes it their mission to change your ways. will they be able to turn you around and set you on the path of good, or are you too stuck in your ways? can you find common ground, or are you simply too different to work out?
traits: self-assured, kleptomaniac, hot-headed
aspiration: criminal mastermind
occupation: criminal (can change later depending on what story you choose)
requirements:
master charisma and handiness
go out at least every three nights
steal something at least once a week
4 | SOFIA
“i think we could do it if we tried if only to say, you're mine. sofia, know that you and i shouldn't feel like a crime.”
much of your childhood was spent sneaking out and escaping from the mainstream. that was one of the few things you and your parent had in common. but while they snuck out to visit night clubs and steal from unsuspecting neighbors, you snuck out to see the one person who made an otherwise lonely adolescence worth it: your best friend, who you adore more than anyone else in the world, who understands you like nobody else, and who you’ve wanted to spend every waking minute with since the day you met as kids.
okay… so you might be in love with your best friend. but days spent giving longing looks across the classroom, nights spent slow dancing in your room, and mornings spent waking up from sleepovers a little too close are totally normal friend activities. there’s no way they’d feel the same about you and if you ever dared to confess, you’d probably just trhow away the one person you were ever close with. you can just repress it. after all, that’s all you’ve ever known.
once you graduate, you and your best friend move as far away from home as possible. you move in together and start the next chapter of your lives. all you want to do is explore the world with your just friend. that is until one day, you fess up the inconceivable courage to confess up your love to them (whether this be a spur of the moment, drunken confession or a long, though-out declaration of love is up to you). and to your relief and utter surprise, they feel the same way! and it turns out they have for a long time. so, the two of you begin your relationship together and the rest of your life is everything you dreamed it’d be as a kid.
traits: adventurous, gloomy, bookworm
aspiration: soulmate
career: author
requirements:
master writing skill
master skiing, rock climbing, OR snowboarding skill
end up with childhood best friend
yes, you have to be sapphic in this one idc (you can’t be the embodiment of a clairo song and then be straight ffs)
have a rocky relationship with your family
have a family member reject you when you come out to them/reveal your relationship (this doesn’t have to be your former heir if you like them too much, it can be a sibling or the other parent or something) (feel free to skip this one if it’s too triggering!)
living in mt. komorebi as an adult is recommended for the adventurous trait, but not mandatory
go an at least one vacation with your family
5 | EILEEN
“these people round here wear beatdown eyes sunk in smoke dried face, so resigned to what their fate is, but not us, no not us, we are far too young and clever”
when you first found out about your parents’ young adventurous spirits, you were shocked. to them, this town you’d grown up in was full of wonders and excitement. to you? it was drab and predictable, full of drab and predictable people. you gagged at the thought of slaving away at a 9-5 job every time and coming home to a simple suburban family. you knew that you were capable of so much more. you simply had something that other people didn’t.
you were born to be a star. or at least that’s what you told yourself. maybe you were a bit in over your head, and maybe you were a bit self-obsessed, but you really did have talent and just maybe, you could make it. you studied acting, singing, and music ever since you were a child and idolized the hell out of celebrities, wanting nothing more than to become one someday.
so as soon as you could, you ditched that barren town and headed off to del sol valley to chase your dreams. you took acting gigs wherever you could find them, did street performances for extra money, and did everything you could to become a star.
believe it or not, it worked! the world was enthralled with your overwhelming presence and oozing passion. you married a fellow celebrity, climbed the social ladder, and it was great. but it was hollow. it wasn’t what you wanted. you wanted to make a change, do something bold and dramatic, but here you were living out a story which has been told a million times. you realized your life wasn’t all that different from the 9-5 suburban nightmare you witnessed as a child. the only difference was, you were followed around by paparazzi 24/7 and excessively coated yourself in luxury. you weren’t special.
having had this sudden realization, you spiraled into a state of mental anguish. and following the traditional story of a celebrity gone bad, the cameras caught it all. your reputation was destroyed, and this chapter of your life was buried with it.
but it wasn’t all bad. eventually you turned yourself around again. you did some reflecting and discovered where you true passions lied–not in the fame, but in the art and the message. life was fulfilling again. from now own, you only worked on small, indie, projects which you were truly passionate about and enjoyed a simpler, more freeing life, one which you realized you had desired all along.
traits: music lover, ambitious, self-absorbed
aspiration: world famous celebrity
career: actor
requirements:
master singing, acting, and the instrument of your choice’s skill
marry a fellow celebrity
reach at least level 3 fame status
have a positive reputation and then turn it into a negative one once you reach peak fame
only take one small gig per week once your reputation drops
6 | OPHELIA
“oh, ophelia, heaven help a fool who falls in love.”
you’re the child of lonely musicians. always in the limelight and always aware of what goes on in hollywood, you have a sour distaste for the environment. so, you leave to the countryside as soon as you can. you try as hard as you can to distance yourself from your former life, fully embracing the countryside lifestyle. take care of your farm, raise animals, make your own food, and help out your community.
you do have one fatal flaw, though: relationships. perhaps it’s due to growing up in the spotlight that you prefer to distance yourself from others. you have this enchanting, mysterious vibe that draws people in, but you never fully open up. you make people fall in love with you but never commit.
traits: loves outdoors, non-committal, gloomy
aspiration: country caretaker
career: gardener
other requirements:
master gardening, flower arranging, and herbalism skills
have simple living trait on your lot
live on a farm
never marry
have at least 3 relationships in your lifetime (it’s your choice who you want to have kids with)
7 | JOLENE
“your beauty is beyond compare with flamin' locks of auburn hair, with ivory skin and eyes of emerald green”
you’re the perfect golden child, a sweet country girl blessed with mesmerizing, good looks, adored by everyone around you. and you know you have to live up to their expectations and create the perfect life.
everyone falls for you and you have no problem leading them on and breaking their hearts. so long as you uphold your pristine image.
one day, you meet your ideal partner. they’re rich, have a nice job, look gorgeous next to you, and did i mention rich? but there’s one problem: they’re married. their spouse is no match for you, though. there’s nobody who hasn’t fallen for your charm, and you’ll get your perfect life, even if you have to destroy a marriage for it.
traits: romantic, materialistic, proper
aspiration: serial romantic (do not have to complete the whole aspiration, but you can if you want to add more of a challenge)
career: none (stay-at-home parent)
requirements:
master singing and cooking skill
break up a marriage by convincing someone to leave their spouse and marrying them
have 2 kids and only have a strong relationship with one of them (not the next heir)
8 | MICHELLE
“michelle, michelle, you are a monster from hell”
growing up in such a superficial household may have molded you into the manipulative, sadistic person you are today. how can they blame you? you saw your parents’ twisted relationship as love, you saw you and your sibling’s constant competing as normal, and you saw your mother’s distaste for you as justified. it’s really no surprise you turned out this way.
so, you take pleasure in putting people down at your job and ruining relationships in your free time. which is why you’re so appalled to find that you love the little bundle of joy who results from a one-night-stand. initially, having a child seemed like a burden to you and you expected to put them up for adoption as soon as they were born. but you find yourself unexpectedly attached and wanting to shelter them from the cruelness of the world–which you ironically contributed to. if only they didn’t push you away.
traits: romantic, evil, snob
aspiration: villainous valentine
career: critic
requirements:
master mischief skill
never marry (have a kid via hookup)
surprisingly love your kid nontheless
have a poor relationship with your mother
have an especially poor relationship with your sibling
9 | RHIANNON
“she is like a cat in the dark and then she is to darkness”
you’re whole family was full of drama. from your grandparents, to your mother, and your aunts/uncles. honestly, you can’t stand it and try to distance yourself from them as much as possible–not that it’s very difficult with your negligent mother who you’re pretty sure never meant for you to be born in the first place.
in your time alone, you read up on and become infatuated with the paranormal. you decide it’s what you’ll dedicate your life too, even if the rest of your family thinks you’re a bit crazy for it.
you don’t have very many friends, you don’t want a big family, you don’t even plan to have a relationship at all. that is until one day you meet a likeminded person who you just can’t shake off. you let them into your life and open yourself up to them and the two of you live a reclusive, and fulfilling (if slightly odd) life together.
it’s then that you’re faced with reality and realize how difficult it must’ve been for your parent to raise you all alone. you reach out to rekindle your relationship and welcome them back into your life.
oh, and also you really like cats.
traits: loner, bookworm, paranoid
aspiration: renaissance sim
career: freelance paranormal investigator
requirements:
master logic, wellness, and medium skills
must have at least one cat at all times
have only one kid
mend your relationship with your parent in adulthood

Olive Leaphy's Bachelorette Challenge
Olive Leaphy is the gen 2 heir of my DITFT legacy and I felt like it was so on brand for her to go against all norms of starting a family so a bachelor challenge seems to be perfect! (Spoiler alert: she's not aged up yet, I just took a peek and this is what she will look like)
A little about Olive:
Pronouns are she/they
Traits: self-assured, ambitious, outgoing (a real strong personality, this one)
Olive never enjoyed the rural farm life she was raised in and always yearned for something bigger, something more exciting. She saved every penny she could and by the time she turns 18, she'll set out for the concrete jungle that is San Myshuno. She loves her family, but the city life called her and she's not letting it go to voicemail! She's got a fiery personality and she needs to have her voice heard. She'll need someone who can not only keep up with her hectic lifestyle, but can embrace it and join her!
Rules:
Please keep it lite CC and limit CC clothing and accessories to just the everyday wear and please include it all in the download to make things easier for me thank u
I prefer maxis match genetics (alpha brows and lashes are ok) but alpha clothes and accessories are ok 👌
Also just in case, please don't include your defaults! I'll use my own <3
Limit pack usage to just the expansions, parenthood, and kids room
Any genders welcome!
Aliens are ok, no other occults please
Tag me in your post so I know you've entered ! I will reblog the posts I've seen. If I get more than 7 entries I will choose at random who's in !
Deadline: June 8th, 2021

Also I like your sims looks and your pictures, they look so cozy. Also like your houses ♥ Keep on being the amazing you !
😳 Well that is just so nice of you to say. I've been playing and posting for so long is so lovely to hear people enjoy my stuff. Funny thing is, before this I never made it past gen 5 I think. But the DITFT challenge really speaks to me. I dunno what I'm gonna do when I run out of generation rules. Start over I guess? Maybe Sims 5 will be out by then haha.
Anyway thank you for sending me this! You keep on being the amazing you too!

i'm about to start your updated version of the ditft challenge and i was wondering if the 2.5 etc. generations are a seperate generation? or am i supposed to play 2 and then 2.5 with the same heir?
they are considered as a separate generation or a replacement! ex being, if you’d rather play the 2.5 gen because you are a missing a pack, or prefer the rules to 2.5, then you can play it in place of the regular gen 2, or challenge yourself and do both gen 2 and gen 2.5! (whether you want to use the same heir, or a child of that heir) i hope that made sense! 💖

yayy i’m starting my first ever sims 4 challenge here! this is the differences in the family tree challenge and i’m following these rules! (i’ll also mix those rules with these ones since i don’t have all packs) this is the heir of gen 1, ava sprout. she’s a freelance botanist and has the dog lover, loves outdoors and clumsy traits (young adult). i really hope y’all like it!! and pls like the ditft posts if you do! :) i’m probably starting it tomorrow (may 11th) btw! also i think it’s fair to say my inspo to start this specific legacy challenge is @cowsplant, and mainly inspos on starting it all are @peanutty and @ratboysims, so go check them all out! <3

The Quick family has doubled in less than a day, adding to the chaos of transitioning to a new stage in Leo’s life.
The twins are back at home by the late morning. The birth had its ups and downs - literally heart stopping - but now everyone is safe, happy and healthy.
Jayla: “Twins. I still can’t believe you kept that from me. We’re done. No more multiples.”
Leo laughs, knowing that Jayla is only teasing him. In truth, it’s a lot to comprehend. Mila was a blessing when she arrived, but now they have double the blessings! Still, did he catch that she might be up for more children, as long as there’s no twins in the future?
No. No more thinking ahead. He already has enough - so much - and doesn’t need anything else. He loves how much their family has grown, but three children between them is enough. Mila is already a handful, he’s sure the twins will be just as bad. In fact, after he and Jayla have to feed one of the twins each, they hear Mila’s feet pounding down the hallway as she rushes to meet her new siblings.
Leo: “I’ve got this. You can rest a while if you want.”
Jayla leans in for a lazy kiss and nods sleepily. They break apart so that she can rest up and Leo will distract Mila for a while.
Jayla: “Wait…we still haven’t named them!”
Leo states at her blankly. Everything has been such a rush that they forgot something so important - naming their sons! After some quick deliberation, they settle on the names Dilan and Auden.
