am i the only one that hates the look of the creature size comparison thing on the df wiki? like there is something distinctly Wrong about it. i found an example that's less horrifying than most of them, greatly aided by being low res, and that the featured creature lacks most humanizing body parts.
okay first things first it fucking stares at you like ⚫⚪⚫! i fucking hate that!!
second. the ones with arms and legs are spread out completely, including all fingers and toes maximally spread out, a highly unnatural pose that increases fear by a Lot
third. i cannot fucking overstate the eyes thing. we need to go back to that, as i now present one that's more typical of the average size comparison chart!
THAT DOES NOT AT ALL RESEMBLE A WATER BUFFALO. note the front facing eyes and humanoid ears, as well as the "standing" posture that begins to directly go against the very idea of a size comparison!
note the gray fingers of the dwarf. that represents each fingernail entirely covering each finger! note the twisted jumble of detail on the dwarf's face, inhuman and seemingly agonized! we were simply never meant to see this!!!!!
in conclusion i hate this "feature" of the wiki and use ublock to quick-hide the chart when its a page with information i need

#I am betting... no#Honestly I've pretty much given up with Rejet at this point#upon reflection the more I think about the mess that was Shin's Daylight CD the more I wonder whether I actually trust them with him anymore#I know it's hard to keep coming up with new situations for the characters but it really felt like whoever wrote it#had never bothered to look through any of Shin's earlier material#and just read his wiki article#I'm not saying he was OOC but... they took him back to being more like he was in DF and then speed ran his character development#but without any fun blood sucking scenes

Giant versions of animals in DF are no joke. This sea lamprey provoked a giant sponge and did not survive.
I love how the lamprey's attack is described as "lightly tapping the target". On the other hand one successful push from the sponge ,and it was over for that silly fish.
Some dwarves like sponges for their squishy texture.
Some dwarves like sea lampreys for their suckers.

I hate the way Mapleshade is characterized later on. She starts off as a fairly average, yet haughty cat who views herself as above the Code and descends into madness after being *tormented* by visions of her dead children. She wasn't killing people out of jealousy for Reedshine and Appledusk, she killed people because she was convinced it was the only way to get her kits into heaven. But later on, she starts tormenting Crookedjaw for no reason other than jealousy, then torments DF apprentices and starts hating StarClan just for evil points, I guess. How do you mess up the motives of your OWN character so bad??
It would have been so much more interesting if she believed she deserved to be in StarClan, then tried to secure her place in StarClan by "helping" Crookedjaw + redeeming herself while in actuality she's only securing her place in the DF, rather than her just being another generic "evil" character. It would also be WAY more interesting if the fact that Frecklewish (it would be better if it were everyone in MV other than Reed and the kits were in hell but whatever ig.) could drive her even further in thinking she was right.
I get that the people who wrote MV are not the same as in the other books but STILL. Why the hell did they think it was a good idea to use the WARRIORS FANDOM WIKI as their series bible.

disclaimer: I do not know anything about plants.
a dihua tidbit in cfandom I saw recently: in ep 8 when dfs first joined the lotus tower party, there was this transition scene of 荻花 (pronounced dihua, exactly the same way of 笛花 dihua. wiki tells me they're called amur silvergrass in english)
(in fact one of my favourite dihua fanart is dihua drawn with the lotus flower + 荻花 dihua motifs.)
off the top of my head, that reminded me of the field llh was in during his final sword dance in ep 40 - which is also a very significant dihua scene:
and indeed I found out that people have talked about how this is a dihua field.
when doing a quick google search on 荻花. there are articles talking about how similar 荻花 and 芦花 (luhua / reeds) look and are easily confused with each other. if we followed the guides, those in ep 40 are likely not dihua, but in fact luhua. which another one of the dihua fans also pointed out.

of course this is not to be taken seriously unless it means anything to you. but luhua apparently symbolises a love of inferiority/humility

Did you know? The dwarf fortress version number is based on the number of core features completed, followed by a typical counter of minor updates. for example, version 0.50.11 is the 11th revision of the 50-feature version.
features range wildly in size and scope. completed features include wrestling, beast attacks, fire, and the tutorial. future/incomplete include love and romance, artifacts having varied magical properties, and castle guards being able to arrest you in adventure mode, rather than only kill you.

name explanations and more info below :3
basic stuff
-each agency is a clan, not each unit. 14-15 clans would be silly and then we would have some clans with 5 cats and some with 2.
-starpro -> lightclan. i couldn’t call them “starclan” for obvious reasons. light is somewhat synonymous with star, so i’m going with that.
-cospro -> nightclan. i don’t think the cats in warriors know the word “cosmic”, but cosmic implies cosmos implies night sky, so we’re going with night
-rhyth lin -> rippleclan. ripple is sort of a synonym to rhythm….? this one was hard
-new di -> fortuneclan. this one is a stretch but neither “new” or “dimension” have synonyms that really fit a clan name. fortune is something that relates to multiple characters in new di though
-starclan still sort of exists, but the cats do not believe in them the way they do in warriors. they are more of a nursery tale than anything, and select cats (ex: tatsumi) believe in them, but it is not written into their code. medicine cats can still interpret signs, but they do not necessarily think of them as coming from starclan.
-medicine cat forbidden romance is not a thing here
-intermingling of clans is ok and common
-there’s like. other cats in their clans besides just the enstars cast i assume

fortuneclan:
knights
-tsukasa -> scarletstar (scarletblossom) . he is the leader of fortuneclan because he is one of the new di reps for the summits. both scarlet and blossom were chosen bc of his last name (scarlet is a red color… kinda similar to cherry…. and blossom for the cherry blossom).
-leo -> lionheart. ok this one is kind of cheating because lionheart is already an existing warrior, but…come on….
-izumi -> silverspring. sora describes his color as silver, and spring is in his first name
-ritsu -> frostmoon. his first name means cold moon according to the wiki so i just rehashed it
-naru -> goldenroar. since she doesn’t like her first name i didn’t want to use “storm”, and her last name can be read as “thunder” but that’s a little too close to storm? so golden for her hair and roar for her last name
switch
-natsume -> sageeye. a sage is similar to a wizard, and eye is in his first name . also the “dovesong” mentioned is wataru :)
-tsumugi -> bluewing. he is a bluebird. warrior cats probably wouldn’t straight up call a cat “bluebird” so i put wing there instead. deputy cause he’s the vp
-sora -> skyspring . sora means sky. spring is in his last name. i could have used “stream” instead to differentiate him from sena but i think spring is cuter

-madara -> tawnystripe . tawny bc it’s like kind of close to calico if you squint. stripe(s) is in his last name

i swear they used to have pages on the american wc wiki, since that's where i got the prefix bat for one of my ocs. as it stands, i got my info for them by google translating a dif wiki page lmao.
i've decided they're divorced, cause that's an extremely funny dynamic for df cats to have, and anyway, they're barely cannon as is. basically ocs to me <33. i do wish they still had pages on the american wiki tho, i mean, there's some other Su cats that still have one
anyway, i did one design for Batear based on Bunnicula. i realized he looked sprt of bunnyish, and with the bat prefix it was the perfect opportunity <33

The DF encyclopaedia has spoiled me immensely
I'm trying to look up the parts of the AQW story where the DF Hero makes a cameo appearance because I know they exist (or existed at some point) and I cannot find anything because I can't figure out how to navigate the wiki to find the information I'm after
#if this were the DF encyclopaedia it would be SO EASY#I'd go to the page of a character I know was there and then go through all their appearances until I found what I was looking for#NOT SO ON THE AQW WIKI. Can you tell me how to get started with dorf fortress? Like, how to get into it. I am thinking to try it but. I am bad at video games and i am worried it may be overwhelming given its complexity.
This ask came in on August the 8th, 2022, and I would first and foremost like to humbly and deeply apologise for my tardiness in getting around to answering you.
I've been asked this question a lot over the years. I had been going back and forward and umm-ing and ahh-ing at a few details - generating a brand new world, taking screenshots, being as to-the-point as I could. What you see above is about the tenth iteration of the work, and this will probably be the twelfth or so.
Here is the general setup for a successful Fortress:
Create a Small to Medium World.
Select Very Short to Short History.
High Civilizations are a must.
High to Very High Sites to keep things interesting.
Medium Number of Beasts so you won't starve.
Low to Very Low Natural Savagery so you don't get killed by Elephants.
Frequent to Everywhere Mineral Occurrence so you're never short on metals.
Settle in a Mountain tile.
In the preview, make sure you're next to a river.
Make sure when you examine the area, there's no Aquifier.
Check the Temperature, and make sure it's either "Warm" or "Hot".
[e]mbark!
Make sure you [d]esignate some Dwarfs to cu[t] down some trees.
[b]uild [w]orkshop fis[h]ery, two of them, next to your river.
[d]esignate a Dwarf to [d]ig up the stone to lay your foundations.
Every step I just listed is the quintessential "How to play Dwarf Fortress". In fact, if anybody wants to play Dwarf Fortress, this is all you need to follow - this, and the Wiki. You can reach it by going to the official Dwarf Fortress wiki, or use the In-Game Help menu by pressing [?] at any time during your gameplay to figure out the basics.
After writing all of this, I asked the community - mostly because I felt it was far too dry. This was pretty rough content, not at all interesting, and while helpful to most, it can be difficult to go into DF by rote instruction. Amongst them was my original suggestion: Watching Vargskelethor's Dwarf Fortress playthrough.
Some other suggestions from the wonderful community:
Use a "Lazy Newb" pack, such as PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack. These packs are tailor-made for newcomers into Dwarf Fortress, allowing for quick setup, texture packs, and a great deal of utilities.
Use the Dwarf Fortress Wiki's "Quickstart Guide". In fact, just use the Dwarf Fortress wiki in general! The whole wiki is tied to the game itself, so you can find it via the [?] Help! menu.
Use DFHack. DFHack, or Dwarf Fortress Hack, provides you with a console that runs detached from Dwarf Fotress, one that allows you to input commands to modify the game. It automates quite a fair few features for you, making the gameplay far easier.
Watch Let's Play's, Let's Learn's, or read some Dwarf Fortress stories. They're all excellent ways to learn the game - as mentioned previously, I personally figured it out watching Vargskelethor's Dwarf Fortress playthrough.
This covers basically everything you need to know. Everything relevant ends roughly here. This is the definitive, mechanical guide of starting Dwarf Fortress.
If you would not mind, however, I ask you to not leave yet. I have a story to tell you.
This is how to play Dwarf Fortress.
If you've made it to the end, this work was heavily inspired by what initially caused me to be interested in Dwarf Fortress: the Quantum Artefact known as Planepacked.
I came across this whilst looking for video game glitches to laugh at during a moment of deep depression in 2012. Shortly after reading about this ludicrous artefact, and all it's unique, inter-locking, self-referential stacks of history, I found the story of Boatmurdered, which made me laugh myself deep into the school nights.
This year marks my 10th year of playing Dwarf Fortress, and it also coincides with the premium release of Dwarf Fortress on Steam. I joined this little page after my endeavours with speedrunning Dwarf Fortress in 2016 came to a crashing halt after my ambitions got the better of me, and I wrongfully stepped out of line with another member in the speedrunning community.
I only contributed little commentary, but have been continually impressed and proud of the tumblr Dwarf Fortress community - from its incredible artworks I've always wanted to join in on, to the sheer volume of incredible Fortress Stories, to trying to help with complex and complicated problems I felt only I could solve.
This answer has taken a colossally long time to complete as I could not answer it with good faith until I felt all grounds had been absolutely covered, and all possibilities explored - not because Dwarf Fortress is a hard game to play, but it is very, very hard to get into, and get people into.
