Leave it to gamedevs to look at a game they know is gonna do numbers because it's very clearly a passion project by a decently-sized studio and thousands of people are excited for it, and they go: "Yeah well, good for them I guess, but don't go and expect the rest of us to make our games even half as good."
Now they're literally just telling us that they aren't putting any effort into the shit they give us, but we should like it anyways.

When you're living in a household full of cruelty and bitterness and you were never given any kindness, you'll believe the world hates you for being who you are. You'll believe you don't deserve any kindness because the people around you never gave you that. When you see someone being kind and gentle you can't help but feel disgusted. As a child, I experienced this and I hated the world. In Astarion’s perspective, I definitely understood that. This part of his narrative is really relatable to me because I've been there.
He hated when your Tav helped people and treated them with kindness because he was never given any of that when he needed the most. No one came to him during his lowest moments. Until he met Tav who originally he planned on seducing them so they would protect him, and the first person who treated him with genuine kindness. After facing Cazador he realized he can be much more than what he was made for, someone who can break the cycle of terror that he endured for 200 years. He had nothing for so long, with his freedom he can finally start healing and be able to make decisions for himself. He will never be used as a toy anymore because he is his own person now.
I have never loved a character like this before. His story means so much for trauma survivors just like me. Astarion means so much to me and I'll be forever grateful for knowing this character.

I feel like the main feedback we should submit to Larian is "please stop using reddit as your main source of feedback. it's an incel den and an echochamber" because they seem oblivious to that fact. it's like they don't realise what type of gamers they listen to.
For example they rewrote Wyll last minute because redditors regularly complained about him being boring etc. I understand that Larian had good intentions, they genuinely thought they needed to improve this character and they wanted to do better. So maybe if we explained to them, they would be a bit more careful when they listen to shit reddit feedback??
Because they are literally still doing it with every patch!!
Most recently look at how they listened to the dudebros who were simply annoyed that male characters are flirting with them and Larian considered this serious feedback about how romances are unrealistic so they made the companions flirt less. Now I don't think this change is a big problem BUT I am bringing it up because it's the most recent one and once again I can trace this back to a certain type of gamer's complaint. And sometimes it will be minor things like this, other times it's a full rewrite for a black character. This keeps happening, they almost exclusively listen to redditbro feedback and nothing else. I dunno what to do. Flood them with feedback that says don't listen to that other feedback? 😬 lol
you can send Larian official feedback here by the way. just select report type "feedback" instead of bugs. if you want to pester them with anything that you think should be improved in bg3

Everyone cheering about 'lol other game devs are shaking in their boots cuz they're jealous of Larian' are, I think, entirely missing the point.
Like step back for a second and ask yourself why devs at other companies might be wary of Gamers (TM) treating this huge, complex game based on a beloved franchise that promises unprecedented agency and consequences as a new baseline.
Like, perhaps they are concerned that the already standardized-shitty working conditions and outrageous demands of publishers could be made worse if upper management get it into their brains to demand "why can't you just make it like BG3" while providing a fraction of the resources and time.
Not to mention the rather notorious way that Gamers (TM) tend to harass and threaten game devs when they don't get what they believe they are entitled to in a game.
You'd think the devs discussing the working conditions and material conditions that make BG3's development exceptional would get more understanding & sympathy from folks on this site when those devs talk about how their own working conditions wouldn't facilitate such a development cycle.

As disappointed as I am by the news that Larian Studios won’t be making Baldur’s Gate 4, I’ve got to admit that’s a chad move on their part to make quite possibly the greatest RPG of all time and then refuse to make a sequel because fuck you, we’ve got our own ideas we want to pursue. I respect it 😎

people love the mantra "i want shorter games with worse graphics and longer development times and im not kidding" and then theyre like "😔 AAA devs are soo scared of baldurs gate because now they have to deliver quality" "baldurs gate should develop additional free content forever because i am personally unstatisfied with act 3's scope" "they are neever gonna release hollow knight silksong 🙄" "remember in the good old days, when games actually came out on the day they were promised to be released at?" WELL WHICH ONE IS IT?

yeah, this is definitely the takeaway and i am so glad at least Rami sees it! because let's look at the points that the Larian guy is making and how actually a lot of them come from the perspective of a company with money and resources (time!):
1) hire funny people - you need money (and time to interview them, find the right fit, etc.)
2) understand where they are - you need money (for good tools) and time to do this research, maybe even some previously successful games you can draw from.
3) Control spend - assuming you have spend you can control!
4) ... i'm gonna translate this to 'be authentic' - maybe the only one that doesn't cost?
5) don’t bamboozle - it's basically just 4 again so i won't bother.
6) KPIs are a plague - i actually sort of agree with this one, but you can only not worry about most KPIs (like wishlists, sales) when you have funding to not worry about tomorrow, so while in theory it's all good, in practice, you have to make sure you're reaching at least some basic goals before you launch.
7) Impressions don’t mean anything to you - they do and they don't. by themselves, yeah they're useless. but a good campaign means you're getting the impressions and the engagement. it's not possible to get engagement without impressions. people can't interact with what they can't see..
8) Figure out how to execute your expression - but also figure out how much time you can spend or money on executing it because the reality is you probably won't be able to do everything you think you need unless you have unlimited resources.
9) Most important: it has never been easier to *potentially* reach your audience directly. - um yeah, you just gotta research all the places where they hang out and be consistent in talking to them - which both take time.
10) Don’t look back. Look forward. Focus on what works for you, and what isn’t working for you, and tune your message until it is. - yeah, constantly evaluate what worked and what didn't, and take the time to do that. what's that? is that time you could be working on your game cause you don't have hundreds of employees? um yea.
i know he doesn't expressly say you shouldn't do marketing and you should do what we did but a lot of people will take this sort of thread as gospel because he disses marketing so hard and I just wanted to dispell the idea that these are in fact easy steps to replicate for most studios.

Crunch is always bad. Period. End of discussion. If you think crunch needs to exist in any way you are a bad human.
Ah shit stains and their "Every company has crunch" and it's "DRAMA" when it's brought to light as well as "Well, actually THIS crunch is good!"
