What is it that you struggle with in the vanilla durge story?
OUGH I just about stopped bleeding followers, now I'm gonna start again.
Oh well RIP in piss me 😔 You're my sweet cheese though so I'll answer 💖
Basically I find that Durge (as far as I know) actually having a pretty good time before Orin put a worm in his dome undercut a lot of the "oughough I'm struggling against my nature" storyline they're going for. Because Durge never chose to try to leave before being forced to, him attempting to redeem himself basically happened by chance, without any sort of motivation. And that makes sense for a video game character with amnesia, but that's where the "set backstory" clashes against player choice. What in-universe reason does Durge even have for trying to resist his urges? Just like ... an innate feeling of wanting to be good? But why? How? If he's made from Bhaal's flesh, why is that instinct even there at all? If he's a thinking independent being, why didn't he try to leave before Orin did the worm thing?
I'm not even particularly against the Urge itself, even if the way its presented is very edgy and juvenile at times. But the fact that it's implied the Urge was SO strong before but now is just gone and been replaced with a new personality just doesn't mesh with me.
Either Durge had some agency before and chose to be a serial killer horny for murder, and that's why his not remembering shit makes it possible for him to prioritize doing good now that his Urges are suppressed/forgotten. OR he's Bhaal's own flesh and the Urge is an intristic part of him and he physically cannot comprehend doing good.
But because the player needs to be able to choose whether to indulge or redeem Durge, why Durge is choosing/capable of doing good is left to the player. And that just doesn't mesh with the backstory they set up. The Urge was so strong before that he was gleefully a serial killer, but now it's so weak that he's able to resist? Why? What changed? Why was there a personality below the Urge at all? What use does Bhaal have of a puppet who is, on some level, able to think for themself? And if Durge was always able to think for himself, why didn't he rebel sooner? Well, because what if the player wants to play Evil!Durge, then it wouldn't make sense for Durge to rebel in his backstory!
My friend said it's basically a factory reset, and that's what's bothering me. It's unmotivated, it's chance, it's not Durge acting on his own accord. Larian are trying to have their cake (protag with a set background) and eat it too (protag is vaguely enough defined that you can just insert your own motivations into them).
Idk ... Does that make sense? It's a very difficult sort of incongruence to explain, so I'm sorry if I rambled a bunch and said fuck-all.
I'm considering making Phoebus into a classic Bhaalspawn from the previous games, but I'd have to do a bit of research to make that work.

I feel like the playable companion thing in BG3 was kind of a wasteful gimmick whose writing energy could have been better spent on deepening each companion's connection with Tav/Durge and each other platonically AND romantically (less so). I love BG3 but I think it's sorely lacking that found family thing I love in RPGs.

maybe I'm just gay and caffeinated but god. durgewyll story of all time you are the prodigal child you love your father and he asks things of you you'll never be able to live up to.
your father loves you and he demands your life for it. you love your father and it drives you to destroy yourself. you love your father and you sell your soul for the principles he taught you. you destroy yourself and he abandons you. you sell your soul and he exiles you.
you love your father and you would forgive him anything and he will forgive you nothing; any grace you might earn evaporates at the first human failure. your father made you in his image and then he broke the mirror.
wyll lives in the shadow of his father's rejection and his mother's death, and still he quotes him, lives by his teachings, admires him, holds him up as an ideal. the dark urge tried to end the world for bhaal and he took their murder as sacrifice just as readily as any other's, and they spend most of the game desperately clawing back their memories of him - touched by his ideal, whether resisting or not, no choice in the matter.
both of you brought up to your specific purpose, both of you having that purpose snatched away and subverted before you can fulfil it. children brought up to fit in specific roles, unable to return to the fold, unable to shake it off entirely. no wonder you cling to each other.
and of course you're both doomed - except you can save yourselves, at the cost of losing your father.

I just put some detailed, bulleted feedback in the Larian discord server. If you'd like a cheat sheet for ideas on what things to mention in your feedback be it in their discord, on the feedback board on their forum, through their report form (select feedback in the 'report type' drop down menu. Someone also suggested sending each issue as a separate feedback instead of all in one which is a fabulous idea), on twitter, or so on I will drop what I wrote below the cut. You are free to copy my homework and just change the wording a little if it makes sending feedback less daunting.
Hi! Firstly, I will say that I love Wyll very much. Many people do! He has far more devoted fans than you may realize :sparkling_heart: However, we are now 6 patches and 17 hotfixes in and the issue of Wyll’s content disparity still has not been addressed. This is especially notable after the romance-themed Patch 6 which did not even address the major disparity in romance content for arguably the most romantic character.
To break down what I mean:
Despite multiple patches, Wyll still lacks the same level of content as other characters in terms of overall dialogue time (several hours less than Karlach who was added later and has still received new scenes and content beyond epilogues, kisses, and idles). This has yet to be addressed.
He is the only character without a single romance greeting while most if not all other characters have several.
In the epilogue (which was created after the game and thus cannot be excused as “ran out of time to finish him” as other players have tried to suggest about the main game) Wyll is the only origin companion who cannot be hugged or kissed while you can do one or both to all other characters.
Wyll only has two romance scenes compared to all other origin companions who have 3+
He is the only romanceable character lacks a sex scene (or equivalent non-sexual romantic scene to fill this gap)
Wyll is unable to make his own choice in the climax of his story.
Wyll has the least reactivity among the main origin companions, both as a companion and as an Origin character.
Wyll still suffers from bugs that have yet to be addressed and fixed
Despite other character appearances being tweaked between EA in the full game as well as in subsequent patches, Wyll still wears the default warlock outfit which wasn’t even recolored like Gale’s wizard outfit was.
In line with the above, Wyll’s appearance as a devil does not match what is described in his dialogue (claws, more ridges, etc.)
The only updates that have been made to Wyll are the ones that affect all characters (kisses and epilogues) so, to clarify, this is not what I or any others giving feedback are referring to. We are referring to the above issues that have been present since the full game was released.
He is arguably one of the most important characters to the story, one of the most romantically inclined protagonists, and he has one of the most interesting stories. I believe many more people would see this were he given the proper updates and adjustments to bring him up to the content levels of other companions.
It is especially rare that a black character has the chance to play the role in fantasy media that Wyll has been given (heroic, romantic, the center of intruige, witty and charming, and so on), but it is unfortunately common for black characters to get sidelined in writing and for this reason I believe it's all the more important that these things are addressed. He is an important character to many people and would be a wonderful breath of fresh air for the genre if given more time and care.
All of this has been a pretty big topic of discussion on various social media, especially since Patch 6 was released, and I would be more than happy to share those posts (particularly those from social media sites Larian isn’t on) if requested so that a wider range of organic feedback and interest can be seen. If you have any further questions you are free to contact me about it! If you would like more detailed suggestions on what might be done to improve and update his story and integration, myself and especially the many talented and passionate Wyll writers and enjoyers out there would be more than happy to contribute.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this!

AN ABANDONED MISSIVE, FOUND IN SHARESS' CARESS
Do not remind me of that awful brat, Galatea. Yes, I did know him, in fact we used to work together in the brothel back in Luskan. He was always unsufferable, I never even knew who his mother was, she was already gone when I got there and I'm only a few decades older than him after all. Oh but how he teased me mercilessly, calling me hag and all kind of names! Every time one of us would lose a client to him and his devilish charms, he would brag about it for days! He was such a brazen, vulgar little boy. I've never been happier than the day he went and disappeared forever in the woods near the coast, I heard he struck some kind of deal with a fey lord and calls himself a warlock now. Ugh, I'm telling you honestly that nothing good can come out of a man like him having access to that much power. Tyr willing, we'll never have the displeasure of finding out. In the meantime, do not utter his name in my presence ever again!
