“Most people would describe their lovers the same way
Beautiful, funny, smart, incredible, perfect
But you my darling are grotesque
You are the creature that stalks the night
You steal my blood
tear my hair
and poor wax in my wounds
I need not put you on a pedestal for you already placed yourself there
We are not two princes equally fallen in embrace
You are a king and I am your subservient
And you like it that way,
But only sometimes
Sometimes you crawl to me in the dead of night
an emperor without his clothes
begging for succor from my measly human form
I like it that way
There is no comparing you to a summers day
For you are the cold winter that steals daughters away
Cold and bitter yet inevitable
As I Persephone
You are Hades
And when winter comes I meet you
King
I have been told you used to be worse
Patrons of hell your love hath borne witness
But I believe not the bird creatures and the hellish denizens of my dream life
I believe you
You come on your knees shouting
“Teach me! Teach me!”
You are not a king to me
You are a human
As human as they come
With the belief a god is trapped in your bones
I am your master in the land above the dead
Your eyes see only what I tell you is there
It’s only fair isn’t it?
For the roles reverse in the dreamlands
You are a monster
With gnarled teeth leaving trophies in my skin
Claws that curl round my jaw
I love you oh otherworldly being
Yet I question if you love me too
For I am man
You are king
But not always
I fall in love with the days when the king is striped away to reveal
A Dream,”
Dream closes the book,
perhaps it was unwise to look into a book titled “Every single one of Hob Gadling’s Thoughts about Dream of the Endless in Alphabetical order” but really who could resist a title like that? It’s not his fault that literally every single book ever including only vague concepts is in his library.
He should talk to Hob about this and correct some assumptions immediately. He would never beg for succor, the nights he slips from the Dreaming because he is overwrought are his business!
-🦎
Oh, poor Dream. Didn't you know that it's not a good idea to read the poetry that lies within your lover's heart? You may not like what you find there...
Hob is, of course, mortified that Dream would have access to his thoughts. He sits there with his head buried in his hand as Dream critiques each line:
"I am not grotesque and I have never stolen your blood - you mistake me for some twopenny vampire!"
"Well - I didn't mean it literally-"
"I do not require succour, nor for you to... "teach me"!"
"I'm sure you don't love, but it's more of an extended metaphor..."
"You are certainly NOT my master. I believe that I serve the dreamers as a collective, that is my function - but I do not exist to serve your pleasures!"
"Of course you don't, love. I know that. I'm sorry."
"I should hope so. And the most ridiculous part of all, "I question if you love me too". How can you ask such a thing? Would I be here if I did not love and ardently adore all that you are?!"
At this point Dream is red in the face. He slams the book shut, and Hob takes his hands very gently.
"There will be no more poetry, dear. I promise. Now can we go upstairs and have a cup of tea?"
Dream allows himself to be led upstairs, tucked onto the sofa, and plied with tea and biscuits. And he is satisfied that he has put Hob Gadling in his place - there will be no more nonsense.
Hob strokes his hair, and silently smiles.

i just woke up from a dream in which you were a character, and I have the following details to share with you: 1. in dreamland you're an admin for a minecraft server catering to creative types 2. in this minecraft server, you and some of the other admins have released small novella-length books as actual minecraft books, which people can obtain (along with works of art made by other denizens of the server) as part of a system of fairgrounds style prize games. 3. one of these, the one i received for competing, was something you snickered about and confessed that you'd actually just rewritten steven king's IT as a science-fiction cosmic horror with coyboys in space
all sounds pretty on-brand tbh

Love how the Sandman comics slowly widen in the perspective on Dream where first you start out from the human perspective and he's terrifying and distant and then you get Death's perspective where he's kind of a melodramatic and awkward little brother and then there's a couple volumes where you get to know the denizens of the Dreamlands a little more and to them he's a well-liked and respected albeit occasionally exasperating ruler and then the focus shifts a bit to the other sibs and you find out that Despair, Desire, and Delirium are all on the same page regarding Dream as "dude has a major stick up his ass"

The Waddle Dee and The Piece of Blue Cloth
This is my headcanon fanfic about how Bandana Waddle Dee got his signature piece of clothing. Enjoy!
It was a fine sunny day on Planet Popstar, and everyone was relaxing after the defeat of Nightmare. And among the bustling streets of the Dreamland marketplace, a tiny Waddle Dee who was asked by none other than King Dedede to grab groceries for that night’s feast was on his way out. “Hey, where are you going?”, asked a friendly Cappy who was running a store for toys. “Nothing much. Gotta get the king his lunch!” The Waddle Dee replied as he made his way towards the castle.
Suddenly, out of nowhere a bunch of rowdy denizens made their way through the market, causing the tiny little orange marshmallow to trip and spill all the groceries he was carrying. Luckily, nothing was broken- save for a bump on the Waddle Dee’s head that appeared when he tripped on the ground. “You ok, kiddo?” Asked a friendly Cappy merchant as he helped the Waddle Dee pick up the spilled goods. “I guess so…” replied the latter as he picked up his bags, but the injury on his head was irritating him.
“Here. Maybe this’ll help you.” Said the Cappy as he went over to the fabric stand and asked the seller for a piece of cloth to cover up the injury. “Whoa! It’s all blue and stuff like that! Is that for me?” Asked the Waddle Dee excitedly as he took the piece of cloth from the friendly merchant. “Of course, kiddo. You’ve gotta place something over that head injury if you want it to heal!” He said as his little friend tied the piece of cloth over his head. “It fits me! This is amazing!” He said as he looked at himself.
“Have fun, kiddo- and tell his majesty I said hi!” The grateful Waddle Dee replied as he went on his merry way to Castle Dedede. And that’s the story of how a single Waddle Dee would later come to be known as King Dedede’s “Waddle of The Year”, and Kirby’s best friend.

"Ugh, this isn't working.. what if I.. this should help!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Um, helllooo? Is this thing on and working?"
Tumblr media
"Great! I knew I could do it (read: fix this dangerous, untested magical device) if I tried hard enough. I'm Aife, denizen of Dreamland, and I need your help! Well, not need. But it'd be nice..."
Tumblr media
"So one day I was thinking. Who's the undisputed best in Dreamland? (other than Kirby, of course...) No, in the whole of the Gamble Galaxy? That got me wondering about this little thing I found... So I tinkered with it a little and here we are!"
Tumblr media
"Hehehe, save your praise for later. Here's the plan: You, O' wisdom from Another Dimension- will help me determine the BEST and GREATEST in all of the Gamble Galaxy! Sound like a monumental task? Well, don't worry: all you have to do is vote! And submit your candidates, of course."
Tumblr media
"But don't breathe a word of this to any of the Star Allies... I'd get in big trouble... And they'd win easily! That's unfair! Not all of us were awake to help... So what are you waiting for? Send me your candidates!"

The Girl from the Steps
Gotta say, Identity V has actually brought back a lot of inspiration when exploring my characters, this happens when I get a hyperfixation, I come up with a new character or explore new ideas with others.
For Emilia and I think this could be a cool concept but she's actually a denizen of the Dreamlands, specifically the Steps. She's still technically of Atlantean descent BUT ever wonder what happened to a lot of the people from Atlantis when the empire fell?
Her home realm is both wonderous and dangerous and they can also tune into radio from Earth from different eras there.

It’s Kirby’s birthday today! I cannot express enough how much Kirby means to me. His games are very important to me and always a comfort to me to play and just engross myself in. When I can’t play anything else, I can play Kirby. I first played the original Kirby’s Dreamland when I was 8 years old and I was instantly drawn into the world of Dreamland, Planet Popstar, and beyond. Something about it always fascinated me more than Mario. Kirby’s world seems more grey and fluctuating to the whimsy of its denizens, good and evil existing in every creature and often in equal measure, Kirby’s world is a world of dreams in every sense, and not all dreams are soft, gentle things, and yet he himself is the very embodiment of good, mercy, empathy, and forgiveness. Thanks for everything Kirbs. I look forward to all I get to experience with you in the future in Popstar and beyond!

i want the king in yellow/the dreamlands/carcosa/whatever to have like. a hollow knight esque colosseum of fools
i want a big giant tournament pit where the king and his dancers can lounge decadently in the stands like a fuckin roman emperor while they & presumably the wildly violence-thirsty denizens of carcosa watch wayward eldritch entities & trespassing humans fight to the death for. idk freedom or glory or whatever
hastur's allowed to do fun stuff to the arena, too, like make spike pits appear or reverse gravity or cast hallucinatory terrain whenever he wants just to spice things up
and there's a body chute underneath bc of course there's a body disposal chute underneath and of course there's also monsters living down there like "mmm! nummy! free snackies!" bc the dreamlands also needs more pits filled with monsters waiting for snacks to drop in on em
idk man, i just think the king deserves some good and fun and extremely bloody and violent entertainment

continued from here...
"Somewhere safe."
It had been instinct more than planned when he had taken the androids hand to flee the scene. While the golden hour was a harbor of ultimate safety to it's denizens and visitors, there were still things that could definitely go wrong in the dream. After all, people's temper could still be volatile even in the most perfect of circumstances.
In his case, it started just as most things in his life do. A gamble. The current situation could be thanked to his penchant for winning regardless of the stakes. It's not his fault his opponent didn't know when to stop, much like he himself didn't.
While he's no stranger to having people actively despising him post game, the few who dare to try to claim their losses back can be quite the hassle. The hunch men of the loser currently stalk him from a distance but they are closing in.
In an impromptu moment, he devises a quick plan to fool the goons before they can reach him. He randomly grabs the closest being available in his path, making a dash for the more secluded streets where he can hide the person.
"I'm going to need your appearance for a moment." It was illegal to change appearance in the dreamland, but he was hoping that the secluded alley was far enough from the hounds eyes for him to perform the switch. If they weren't, well, he'd just have to pay the price.
Tumblr media
"Please, stay here and don't make a sound." He's not exactly allowing the other time to process by placing his hat over the androids face and letting darkness fall as he changes appearance to match that of theirs. "I promise to repay your kindness afterwards."
And with that, he leaves the being in the back alley while he stalks back to the main street.

Yetis (Paths Beyond)
Yetis, the iconic IRL cryptids from the Himalayas. Surely a creature worthy of inclusion in Pathfinder, but how much of a connection can they have to the planes? It turns out quite a bit.
Tumblr media
On Golarion, yetis are the reclusive stewards of the mountaintops, but they also dwell in places where the boundaries between realities are thin. In particular, they familar with and wary of the denizens of Leng, which is why some of the 2e yeti's abilities are themed around fear and dreams. Translation: yetis are found in places where strange things happen and where interlopers for other planes can be found. Most yetis guard against these influences and act as gatekeepers who ensure that corruptive planar influences don't spread.
I say most yetis though, because yetis are not uniform and the punishment for violent behaviour is often exile. Other ancestries end up projecting a fearsome and dangerous reputation on yetis because these exciles are the one they are most likely to encounter - and also the yetis most likely to fall to the seductive influences from beyond this reality.
In the frozen wastes of northern Irrisan, a community of yetis watches out for rifts to the first world. Known as the Ubnishro — the light walkers — these yetis are tiny, barely reaching a halfling’s knee. They stymie the advances of the Mouse King into Golarion, as the diminutive fey relentlessly opens new portals for his troops. Anyone passing through the portal finds themselves shrunk to the size of a rodent and trapped on the First World to boot. Only with the aid of the noble rats and their Ubnishro allies can they make their way home to thwart the pint-sized invasion!
Rang is an exile from his community, but unlike many yetis in similar situation, he is not violent and his situation is voluntary. Rang is a summoner who face down the nightmares that stalked his dreams and brought them to heel. While he is no longer at risk and can call forth the nightmare beasts to fight on his behalf, he know the creatures are not benign and fears they will try to corrupt others. He welcomes those seeking to understand their nightmares or seeking passage to the dreamlands - if they can conquer the mountain peaks Rang calls home.
Rumours say that celestial yetis dwell in the remote peaks of Heaven, particularly Illumis and Iudica. These heavenly cryptids are scholars and meditants who reflect on the ideals of justice and right action. They rarely move from the monastic gardens that spring up around them, but through divination pools they can see into the Material Plane, as well as the Dimensions of Dream and Time. Sometimes mortals cand find their way to these gardens, crossing through thin spots between realities high in the peaks of the mortal realms.

Planar Tour Guide: Ethereal Plane part 2
Tumblr media
(art by Erik Nykvist on Artstation)
Geography
As mentioned yesterday, the Ethereal plane doesn’t actually have a lot going on in terrain-wise. In fact, it doesn’t even have gravity. With barely any solid matter and no gravity, one would imagine that there’s no way to move. However, because of the psychically reactive nature of the plane, visitors without flight can will themselves to move at about half their normal speed in any direction.
When matter does appear in the In-Between, it takes the form of matter either brought in from another plane by magic, or as a psychic reflection of an emotionally resonant site on the material plane. What’s more, material objects and creatures can also be vaguely seen as indistinct and translucent shadows.
In any case, these structures that are brought in are often former or current strongholds of powerful mages, or else the creation of it’s denizens. The House of Itinerant Souls, for example, is a cathedral-like structure where lucky souls that haven’t moved on further along the path can find respite and collect themselves before continuing on, free from the fear of being consumed into true undeath. Meanwhile, phase spiders and xill alike have their own realms, such as the ether-spun Whisperweb and scavenged Varesk Gul respectively, or the structure-creature Xevnorvex, which serves as a living library and habitation for the caulborn.
Additionally, a vast mountain of sinister Phantasmagoria’s Maw, a mountainous complex of ectoplasm and manifested matter which is a labyrinth of traps, fear-maddened undead, and worse. This complex is the foothold of sakhils on the Ethereal Plane, with portals to their home realm of Xibalba and to the material plane. Worse still, the Maw moves, disappearing and remanifesting elsewhere so that sahkils can plague the entirety of the material plane.
It's also worth mentioning ectoplasm, which is a substance formed when the mists of the ethereal interact with a soul, particularly when said souls push against the veil between ether and material. This can result in undead creatures coated in or made from the stuff, or web-like masses of the odorless, tasteless, cold gunk.
Moving on from the ethereal, the Dimension of Dreams can be vague and misty at times, but within dreamscapes and the Dreamlands, one can expect nearly anything, the terrain, the gravity, the terrain, and such all vary by who’s dream you are in. What’s more, because they are dreams, a person cannot normally travel their by plane shift, but rather, by lucid dreaming. Once you are in such a state, the impossible becomes possible if you have the will to make it so. However, normal magic can sometimes be wild and unpredictable.
The exception to this is Leng. While technically part of the Dreamlands, it is its own separate demiplane inhabited by it’s own set of horrors. It may be technically the dream of something so immensely powerful that it took on a life of it’s own, or perhaps a horrific playground made by one or more elder gods. Either way, the Plateau of Leng gives way to the Dreaming Shore and further mountains, and contains many settlements. However, they are filled with creatures of malice and madness, where a quick death a mercy compared to the horrible tortures, slavery, and madness that awaits survivors, all in the name of the Elder Gods.
Moving from one horror to another, Xibalba is the realm of the Sakhil. While one can find Phantasmagoria’s Maw and enter there, Xibalba can also be entered entirely by crossing over the demiplane’s border in the Ethereal or plane shifted into directly, to the horror of those who wander in. It appears to be a massive jungle hilltop on which rests a massive ruined city, where sakhil enjoy tormenting mortals and souls they have in their clutches, stripping them of hope and joy in this, the home of fear. There are even caverns below filled with even more horrors, including the Cave of the Bat, one of the homes of the bat god Camazotz. At the center of it all is the Black Pyramid, the great meeting place for Sakhils and the greatest of their kind, the tormentors.
There are also several other demiplanes attached to the Ethereal plane and connected dimensions, such as the Harrowed Realm, an offshoot of the Dimension of Dreams created by Sonnorae the Storyteller, who filled it with beings embodying the many stories and folk tales of the Varisian people. This wondrous fairytale land was not to remain pristine, for some of her creations rebelled and slew her, gaining free-will and self-awareness, only to realize they were trapped in that realm forever with only themselves for company, aside from extremely rare travellers who arrive by accident or by somehow learning of the obscure realm.
As you can see, Despite being mostly empty, the Ethereal Plane and it’s neighboring dimensions offer many wonders and horrors to visitors, even if they normally just use it to walk through walls. Tomorrow, however, we’ll take a deeper dive into the entities that dwell there.

🤍 Starter for @smashingsire 🍰
Power drainage was a bitch. This was something Hope Raymond knew well. Sometimes you got bored with how quiet your homes had been and you go world hopping and end up stranded. That’s just how it is sometimes.
This time in particular, she’d ended up stranded on a version of Popstar. At least it was somewhere she could stretch her wings and tail and could be relatively safe in camping out in. She even knew somewhere relatively sheltered; she just had to talk to this universe’s Whispy and let them know her issue. Which is exactly what she did and in very little time at all, she was set up in a secluded part of the woods, camp sheltered by a cliff.
Tumblr media
Naturally the next course of action was stretching her multi-colored wings and tail out so she could flop down on her sleeping bag and rest. The half-human was exhausted in many ways and it was admittedly nice to have some time away from all the stresses that city life evidently came with. Even if it did come with the classic attitude to Dreamland and it’s curious denizens; cautious for good reason, given how notorious foreign visitors turned out to be malicious.
Thankfully, this wasn’t the case this time. But they had no real way of knowing that.

The Overview of Mirror World
A 'pocket dimension' of sorts, it's unknown how and why it exists, but it has existed for quite some time.
The Mirror World in this AU, unlike most interpretations, is smaller and less contrived. The Mirror World reflects Dreamland and its surroundings AND ONLY Dreamland and its surroundings, and thus only denizens of Dreamland and its surrounding areas really exist there. Though, they seem to only 'copy' the 'certain important people' rather than everyone in it, which makes it very weird. So they have their own Taranza (Dark Taranza) and Susie (Parallel Susie), but weirdly not Tiff, Tuff, Bandana Dee and Robobot Armor. It's just odd, and there were those people who were begging for answers.
And unlike most interpretations, the Mirror World reflects someone's greatest desires rather than their worst sides... or at least that's what it was supposed to be for at least the main trio's copies, if it weren't for Dark Mind somewhat muddling everything away. For example, Shadow Kirby represents Kirby's internal wish to be free from the world constantly turning him into a spanner in the works of whatever threat was coming at the time, as well as a wish to have better innocence and a nicer childhood, but thanks to events of Amazing Mirror, Shadow Kirby lost their innocence and was forced to grow up, becoming more mature faster than Kirby in the process.
The Mirror World tends to be neutral to a lot of conflict. This is because they act mostly pacifistic and peace is near eternal there, in contrast with Dreamland's constant chaos. People there generally do not find interest in causing huge trouble, which is why events of Amazing Mirror was a huge scandal amongst many.
Nowadays, the place is pretty peaceful, and people come and go as they please. New events in the mainland means that there will be some new faces arriving in the Mirror World peacefully around a week later. No, seriously, the people there just ask nicely if they can live here, and they are instantly accepted as long as they don’t try anything horrible.
Where did the copies come from? Who created this world? Why is it created? That's a question no one, not even the smartest brains in the Mirror World, could never answer. Despite so, ironically, the denizens don't really have a problem thinking about their existential crisis or anything, they are grateful for existing the way they are in their own little bubble. And the mainline people, as rowdy as they are, tend to be a good bunch for the most part, so they are content. It’s even still unknown if they have a religion, most of them just live their peace to the fullest.

i saw your kirby oc, Jinxy. and I was wondering if you can share some more information about them? backstory, what they do currently, personality etc. they look so cool.
Of course!! Backstory:
Jinxy LeHex in the kirby universe, is a bat creature who hails from a different dimension on a planet that is called "Nocturnea". The planet has a very dark aesthetic with some gothic and halloween vibes to it from the fauna, the flora and the denizens that live there. One of the main beings that live there are the same species as Jinxy. Now there is a king who rules over the planet known as King Lazarus Grimrose and his son Prince Noc. The king is but a tyrant and the people are afraid of him...however they do have a lot of respect for his son who is the complete opposite to him. Part of the court is a court magician by the name of Lord Phantasma Dascălu who is Jinxy's adoptive father and mentor , He was the one who taught Jinxy everything they needed to know as well as had an extensive knowladge about magic and "The Old World"...which kinda comes into play later?? Now...Things were fine up until an event happened which lead to the events that put Jinxy on Planet Popstar in the first place... This event in short was that Jinxy's adoptive father was accused of a crime he didn't commit, he was imprisoned and was set to be executed. Jinxy of course was upset and being pretty impulsive when it comes to making decisions ended up confronting the tyrant king which lead to a fight...him accusing Jinxy of treason and she too was imprisoned...Now Prince Noc and Jinxy were close, best friends even since Jinxy arrived at the castle. Noc didn't want to see his best friend getting hurt by his father so with his own magic he created a portal to the nearest dimension for Jinxy to escape to since if Jinxy were to leave the cell they were kept in there wouldn't have been a safe place on Nocturnea for them to hide.
With that Jinxy seeing there was no other choice they went through the portal which lead them to The Dimension Road/Another Dimension, It was unknown for as to how long Jinxy was stuck there for but eventually The Bat Witch did find an open rift which lead them to Planet Popstar.
Jinxy kinda...landed really awkwardly since the rift was placed in a weird location so when they walked through they fell and landed in a field at the bottom of a hill....So they were a little disoriented? They were also kind of scared since this world is very unfamiliar to them and the witch didn't know what awaited them there. So once Jinxy got a bit of their bearings they ended up exploring trying to at least find a settlement or something to find an inn to rest in. After a bit they did run into a person and Jinxy decided if they could point them into the right direction. The person was none other then Meta Knight, he happened to be training Sailor Waddle Dee at that moment. Sailor Waddle dee was more or less curious about The Witch, so was Meta Knight but he had his guard up since you know, stranger he never met before and he is a cautious dude.
To try and shorten this even more, basically Meta Knight took Jinxy in for a short while until Jinxy got settled into Dreamland. It took Jinxy to adjust to the place since it's nothing like their homeplanet so they had to get accustomed to the people, place, culture and so on!! Which took months since they also had to get used to a planet that has a sun as well since Nocturnea doesn't have a sun. Just two moons so it was always dark there compared to the bright and colorful world she now resides in.
Present:
Jinxy LeHex after a while did settle in nicely in Dreamland, they live in the forest not to far from one of the villages!! By day Jinxy is a potions merchant beings that they know alchemy as well. So it's how they make a living!! However...when they aren't selling potions Jinxy did aquire themselves a little crew where they all cause mischief together, like pranks and the like!! Jinxy believes Dreamland could use some excitement beings that when there isn't something threatening Popstar or the galaxy as a whole it's a quiet and calm place.
Personality:
I briefly mentioned that Jinxy was implusive when it comes to making decisions, So in turn it does make the witch a little reckless. Doesn't mean she isn't smart though, she's smarter than what they give themselves credit for. Not only that Jinxy is very mischevious, loves pranks a ton, so they're very playful ontop of that!! They do have a soft spot for the people they care about and will pretty much drop what she is doing to help their loved ones.
So sorry about this post being long, i have a lot of things written down when it comes to my characters, I did my best to condense it down as best as i can!! I am happy that you've shown interest in my silly characters! it means a lot to me so thank you!! ^^

speaking of the other denizens of Dreamland, have you ever made an encounter with popstar's very own Kirby?
kirby.... quite an interesting character. when me and para lived closer to waddle dee village, we saw him very often, but never really interacted.
except, once ... i was sitting down to eat a sandwich para so lovingly made for me, and Kirby came right up to me, shoved it in his mouth and flew away! i was so shocked i didn't say anything, but I suppose I can't be too mad at a child.
...well, i say that, but i dont know how old kirby actually is. i dont think anyone does? they never seem to age or grow, either!
hmmmm...

Plentiful Planes & Places: The Dimension of Dreams
Also known as: The Dreamlands
Tumblr media
Image source: Planar Adventures, pg. 213.
“When we sleep, we all visit the Dimension of Dreams.”
The Dimension of Dreams overlays the Ethereal plane, serving as the place where all sleeping minds go. Sleeping creatures, known as Dreamers, enter the Dreamlands through avatars called lucid bodies, in order to exist within their own personal Dreamscapes. Dreamers are capable of entering the Dimension of Dreams from anywhere in the multiverse.
When a Dreamer enters the Dimension without precautions such as magic or meditation, or they fail a contest of wills against the Plane, they are summoned into the Dimension of Dreams at a particular disadvantage, such as in a hostile environment or without important equipment.
Even in the worst of circumstances, a Dreamer is capable of impossible feats while within a dreamscape. Depending on a being’s willpower or knowledge of the plane, they may perform unlikely feats such as powerful spellcasting, destructive prowess, or warping the very area around them.
Hidden deep within the seas of dreamscapes, there lies a stable center to the plane known as the Dreamlands, the stability of which is maintained by the minds of powerful Dreamers and other entities. Traveling to this realm is more difficult than other forms of planar a travel, as one needs to find a doorway through an existing dreamscape in order to access The Dreamlands, a doorway which usually appears as a literal door on the side of a tree within an enchanted forest.
Entire nations and and realms exist within the Dreamlands, some ruled by powerful Dreamers and others existing as nightmare realms controlled by otherworldly powers.
Denizens of the Dimension of Dreams:
While many beings across the multiverse visit the Dimension of Dreams in their sleep, very few outsiders actually make their home in this plane.
Night Hags are fiendish Hags that ply the Great Beyond for souls and other vile goods they can trade off to the highest bidder. They are capable of entering the Ethereal Plane in order to travel, and often invade the Plane of Dreams in order to harass Dreamers.
Animate Dreams are exactly as they sound, Dreams given sentience and free will. They caper about the Dimension of Dreams, often appearing in sentient creatures’ Dreamscapes.
Dreamthief Hags are more powerful cousins of Night Hags. They are not born naturally, but are created when a Night Hag undergoes a potent ritual. Rather than bartering souls like their weaker kin, Dreamthief hags capture the minds of their victims, to sell to unique buyers.
Other creatures associated with dreams and sleep can be found in the Dreamlands, along with even stranger creatures of nightmares and alien sentience.
Divinity in the Dimension of Dreams:
While most gods have influenced dreaming minds, no major divinities actually lay claim over the Dimension of Dreams.
The closest thing to divine presence in the Dreamlands are the strange, alien beings known as the Great Old Ones, or the Outer Gods.
These beings often invade the Dimension of Dreams, influencing the minds of powerful Dreamers and sowing madness in the world.
Some of these Elder beings actually make lairs in the Dreamlands, where they corrupt and twist the already strange landscape.
Locations in the Dimension of Dreams:
The outer part of the Dimension of Dreams is made up of a sea individual dreamscape, and beyond that there is a central core, known as the Dreamlands, which is held together by powerful minds. The collective dreams and desires of individuals such as powerful psychics, Spellcasters, or Great Old Ones hold the Dreamlands together, enabling a mostly cohesive, yet still shifting, geography.
Dreamscapes are individual bubbles in the Dimension of Dreams containing Dreamers. This foam of Dreamscapes forms and evaporates as each being in the multiverse sleeps and awakens, and each Dream is unique to the consciousness of the Dreamer that created it. When one first enters a Dreamscape, it appears as a flashing swarm of desires and visions, but over time it molds and takes the form the Dreamer imagines.
The Enchanted Wood is often the first place visitors to the Dreamlands encounter, as it holds the doorway between the Dimension of Dreams and the true Dreamlands. It is an idyllic forest, where fantastical beasts make their homes and lives, and inhabitants are capable of impossible feats.
The Plateau of Leng, while partially considered it’s own realm, is held in the far reaches of the Dreamlands. It is a strange locale, populated by alien ghouls and other beings from beyond the stars. The Plateau truly is a place of nightmares, where the Outer Gods have a foothold into the Dimension of Dreams.
While I have been plagued by the odd nightmare and ominous vision, I never would have expected my dreams to actually MEAN something, let alone be actual places.
Imagine my surprise when I found out that not only are dreams real, they make up a whole plane of reality dedicated to dreams!
With magic, one can view or even manipulate the dreams of others. However, with powerful occult rituals, it is indeed possible to actually visit the Dimension of Dreams consciously.
Once this journey has been made, it opens up a whole reality of shifting dreamscapes and strange locales, each full of artifacts, knowledge, and treasures an adventurer can only dream of.
Get it? Dream of?
- A Weird Warlock.
