Recently I had the amazing opportunity to go to De Grijze Jager Dag in the Netherlands, which is like a renn faire just for Ranger's Apprentice in an amazing open air museum!! I got to meet so many of my favorite creators and friends, and it was totally worth the trip all the way from America. Anyways, I rarely do pics on this blog, but I thought it would be fun to tag all the people who I met on this fine day. @ailsa-iris, @redrose-arrow, @ranger-melany, @uselessranger, thanks for being so welcoming and lovely!!

Also shoutout to @forgedroyalseal for being another insane American to show up for this event I was NOT expecting to meet you at all. Your candles breathe life into me fr fr. (Photos below the cut!)

Sulisstuff explained!

Hello there! And welcome to my blog!

I've been on Tumblr for over 6 years. In the past I've had several blogs with this one previously being a meme page for Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks' miniseries Band of Brothers.

Now. I still love Band of Brothers, but I decided that I wanted to turn this blog into something more general.

This blog is NOT dedicated to the godess named Sulis OR to Aquae Sulis, known for the Roman baths.

My blogname is just an easy way of writing Suli’s stuff. Gotcha?

Soo, second of all:

What's my name?

My name is Suli.

It's not my actual name, but it's the name I'm comfortable with to put on the internet. So you can just call me Suli on this blog, even if you do actually know me ;)

Now, I mentioned Sulis and that my blogs name is just a version of Suli's stuff

But to those who are fan of James Cameron's Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water: I'm sorry. My name also doesn't have anything to do with Jake Sully's Na'vi name "Tsyeyk Suli"

I do absolutely love Avatar and I love the connection it has, but it's not based off of it.

Where am I from?

I'm from the Netherlands. I was born and raised Dutch and I'm proud of it! (gekoloniseerd)

So, since I'm Dutch, I feel like I have to mention that the Dutch people seem to be known for their fondness of swearing and cursing.

And I do feel like I also have to mention that I'm no exception.

Like, not in the slightest. Sorry

My blog won't be filled with swearwords though, but I also won't make sure that it isn't. So if you have a problem with swearwords, you should probably look elsewhere.

What languages do I speak?

My first language is Dutch! I'm completely fluent and it's the language I speak on a daily basis.

My second language is English. I was not raised speaking English and I started taking English classes in school when I was about 12 years old. I consider myself pretty fluent in the language, but naturally I still make some mistakes as it is not my first language.

And after that I've had five years of German classes when I was in school, but I can't say I speak the language very well. I do understand it moderately though, but just don't ask me to translate it haha.

What are my pronouns/preferences?

I was born as a female and I identify as a female, so my pronouns are she/her.

I'm straight, and not part of the LGBTQ+ community, but I love and support everyone to be who they are and I will not accept any form of racism or discrimination on my blog! People who comment negatively on those matters will be reported and blocked immediately. No hate on this blog, just love!

What type of content can be expected?

On this blog I will post just random stuff related to the fandoms I'm in.

I actually love to write and I've been writing stories since I was 10 years old, but I've never actually published them anywhere. And if I do write, it will only be in Dutch. I master the English language very well, but not well enough to actually write stories I will be satisfied with.

So, if people would like me to write anything for the things I listed above, I will surely try, but it has to be okay if it's only written in Dutch :)

Furthermore I will probably post memes and other content related to the things I love!

De Grijze Jager = Dutch for Ranger’s Apprentice.

At the local bookstore they had these fancy maps of Araluen - yes I’m Dutch - and it’s so detailed and has all the fiefs with its castles and villages. It’s soooooo pretty.

Headcanon time!

wat nou als Halt al jaren lang Abelard’s haren vlecht, en dan op een dag wanneer Pauline en hem samen zijn, en het Pauline niet lukt haar haar te vlechten, dat Halt gwn is zo van “hier.” En vlecht haar haar in like een of andere zeer moeilijke vlecht. En Pauline is zo van “wacht dat kan jij?”

En halt moet uitleggen dat hij vroeger ooit Abelard’s haren heeft gevlochten omdat het zo’n puinhoop aan haren was, en dat Abelard het sinds toen altijd wilde, en dat het een soort van relax momentje werd waar hij gewoon even helemaal nergens aand hoefde te denken en dat Crowley hem toen ooit een oud boekje heeft gegeven dat ie had gevonden op de markt, en daar stond allemaal uitleg voor moeilijke vlechten in en hij heeft ze langzaam allemaal uit z’n hoofd geleerd op Abelard’s haar. Het was echt zo’n paard-baasje bonding moment.

En Pauline kijkt echt zo naar halt van wtf Did I just hear. En ze is gwn zo van “ja laat maar ik ben allang blij dat ik een man heb getrouwd die kan vlechten.”

ik heb voor school een boek moeten lezen en daar een opdracht voor moeten maken en daar kreeg ik een cijfer voor. gelukkig had ik een voldoende en het boek was de grijze jager 1

TOP 3 FAVORIETE BOEKEN 🥈

Op de tweede plaats is er “De dragers van het Eikenblad” van de serie De Grijze jager geschreven door John Flanagan. Het is het vierde boek van de serie.

Het is het verhaal van Will een jonge Grijze jager die in het derde volume als slaaf samen met Evanlyn (de dochter van de koning) in Skandia vast zit. Het lukt hen om te ontsnappen maar Evanlyn wordt ontvoerd door Temujai krijgers. Will komt er met zijn mentor Halt achter dat het een heel leger van Temujai krijgers zijn die het op de Skandiërs hebben gemunt. Ze beslissen om de Skandiërs te helpen in deze oorlog.

 Het is een heel leuke serie dat super spannend is. Ze beleven altijd nieuwe avonturen en we hechten ons echt aan de personnages aan. Er komen altijd nieuwe personnages die in de volgende boeken vaak terug komen en dat vindt ik heel leuk. Ik raad het aan aan alle personen die van avontuurlijke verhalen houden. Het is natuurlijk beter om met het eerste volume te beginnen. Ik heb zelf de hele serie uitgelezen en dit was mijn favoriete volume. Laat me weten welke jij het beste vond!

Ruïnes van Gorlan (Grijze jager)

Samenvatting

Dit boek gaat over Will, een jongen van 15. Het jaar dat Will wordt geboren is er oorlog tussen Araluen en Morgarath, heerser over de Bergen van nacht en Ontij. Araluen wint deze oorlog

Will wil graag naar de Krijgsschool gaan, maar hij wordt afgewezen omdat hij klein is. Voor de Krijgsschool moet je groot en sterk zijn. Arnaut (een jaargenoot en pestkop) wordt wel aangenomen. Halt (de mysterieuze grijze jager) wil hem wel als leerling. Will wil dit niet.

8 maanden later gaan Will en Halt naar de jaarlijkse jagersbijeenkomst. Hier ontmoet Will Gilan de ex-leerling van Halt. Als ze even later op de jagersbijeenkomst zijn heerst er een gespannen sfeer. Halt, Will en Gilan moeten direct daarna op zoek naar de Kalkara, gevaarlijke monsters van Morgarath.

Recensie

Ik vind het een super leuk boek, ik heb het al een paar x gelezen. Je komt heel erg in het verhaal, het is ook met veel gevoel geschreven, ‘hij liep kalm een paar passen achteruit en viel opnieuw aan. Will draaide om de stam heen, en wist de vlijmscherpe tanden nog maar net te ontwijken.'

Dit is niet het beste deel van de grijze jager serie. Het is wel een heel leuk deel. Het is soms langdradig geschreven maar het is wel echt super leuk!

Als je eenmaal aan het lezen bent is het moeilijk te stoppen met lezen omdat je snel in het verhaal komt. Als je het eerste deel uit hebt dan heb je binnen een mum van tijd de hele serie uit.

Mocha - dream job?

I would love to work (or if I dream really big, own a place) in a place where people with special needs, either physical or mental, can work on their health etc with the help of animals. Like having therapy sessions with either a dog or a cat present so you can hug them when your emotions get the best of you or talk to them if you don't want to look at the therapist. This is just one example that comes up to me, but there are dozens of examples of animals helping people so it would be really awesome to do this kind of work and help people. All of this would, of course, be in an animal friendly way :)

Pumpkin spice - dream car?

I've never been someone to care much about cars, as long as it takes me where I need to be, I'm good. But my brother is a big fan of expensive cars, like Ferrari, Lamborghini and more of that and because of that I started to see the beauty in them too, but not enough to have a dream car.

Iced cafe mocha - favorite thing to do on rainy days?

Snuggle up on the couch with a cup of tea, a cookie and either a book or a movie

Hot chocolate - are you an affectionate person?

I am with people I know and care a lot about. Someone who doesn't know me, or just met me, would see a more closed off and private person.

Mint tea - how do you relax?

I love going to dinner with friends or family, just talking and enjoying food together. I also love to go outside and walk, with or without my dog. Both things calm me down and make me rrally happy and therefore, also relaxed

Iced coffee - do you like reading, if so what's your favorite book?

I love reading! I got that love from my mother, who got it from her mother and so on. In high school I was in the library so much the librarian knew me by name, saved me articles from the newspaper that were about my favorite writer and always told me when he had gotten new books for the libraby he thought i'd like. I always find it hard to pick a favorite book, becaus I love a lot of books I've read but one of my favorite series is Ranger's apprentice (de grijze jager in Dutch). I started it in high school and I still love it. I also love books about true stories like history or a biography. Two books that I found really good and interesting are "The home for unwanted girls - Joanna Goodman" and "The Alice network - Kate Quinn"

Langblr secret santa 2019

I've been assigned @sweetcheese06 by @langblrsecretsanta

Since it was mentioned you'd like fantasy books in Dutch, I've decided to try and make a list of my faves growing up, and also note a few good beginners books (not necessarily of the fantasy genre)

First of all these are books I remember growing up that I think are good as beginner books:

Nijntje (miffy) - by Dick Bruna

These are all separate little stories about a bunny named nijntje and her friends. The books are usually rather small, and have short stories. Each page contains easy sentences with max? 4 sentences a page, mirrored by an illustration for each page.

https://www.nijntje.nl is the official nijntje site, which shows a list of books, and a few audio books are available.

Jip en Janneke - by Annie MG Schmidt

Jip (the boy) and janneke (the girl) are stories about two neighbouring kids, who go and experience all sorts of everyday adventures. Sometimes their adventures involve their pets, takkie (the dog) and siepie (the cat)

The books are (from what I remember) usually bundles of multiple short stories, and use simple sentence structures that are more difficult than nijntje but are still rather aimed at younger children. That being said, I'd say these books are the most useful for beginners. Because they're still a challenge, but also not too difficult.

My favourite story is called "de rijst met krentenhond" which is part in the bundle "jip en janneke 1" and I found a blogpost with the text of that story on it:

The story is about the children meeting a giant dog that has the colour of rice with spots like raisins...

Fantasy books:

A very useful thing I've seen as a language tip is to read books you're familiar with, except in your target language so here are a few well known books that got a translation to Dutch:

De hobbit - J.R.R Tolkien

In de ban van de ring - J.R.R. Tolkien (lord of the rings)

Harry potter ( for example: harry potter en de steen der wijzen) - J.K Rowling

De hongerspelen - Suzanne Collins (the hunger games)

De schijfwereld - Terry Pratchett (the discworld, my all-time favourite... The books are quite challenging though, both in English and Dutch)

Hart van inkt - Cornelia Funke (inkheart, I've only ever read the first book, and it's a good story but also a very thick book haha)

Mathilda - Roald Dahl

Hi! So that’s actually a very good question, and I’m glad you asked. I’m going to try to explain how we work with that and if anything’s not clear after, let me know!

So, officially, in the Netherlands, the series is promoted as intended for 8-12 year olds. Since the Fanclub has come into existence, this is no longer explicitly the case, but it inherently is, you know?

This means that many of our members are in fact, relatively young and so we’ve noticed that they don’t take the biggest interest in anything that isn’t explicitly canon. At the same time, we have a bunch of members that DO want to talk or think etc. about Alternate Universes, Alternate Pairings, etc. This is a contrast that we find very difficult to balance, because we don’t want to shove things down people’s throat that they don’t take any interest in, but we also don’t want to ignore the members who do.

So, generally speaking, our topics within the newsletters, activities, and social media are pretty neutral and largely focus on the canon. However, you are always free to interact with that however you want, and if you want to discuss an alternative pairing, we will not restrict you. On top of that, we have a bunch of members that are always super active and we can always bring you into direct contact with them and I’m sure some of them do or would ship Hill.

In the end, my totally unbiased opinion would urge you to become a member, and then we can together with you look for other members who have similar opinions.

Mijn autoleesbiografie

De kijkfase

In mijn kijkfase werd ik niet erg veel voorgelezen omdat ik dat ook niet echt wou. De boeken die me wel voorgelezen werden, waren bijvoorbeeld Bambi, Dumbo en nog meer Disney boeken. Deze boeken heb ik onthouden omdat ze altijd in mijn kamer liggen en ik het me dan herinner dat die aan mij werden voorgelezen.

De genietende luisteraar

In deze fase werd er nog steeds weinig voorgelezen. Er werden wel een paar boeken voorgelezen waarvan ik de meeste titels niet meer weet. Het boek dat ik me wel nog herinner is een boek van Suske en Wiske.

Het verre leesverleden

Het eerste boek dat ik volledig alleen gelezen heb is een boek van Suske en Wiske, die me al eerder is voorgelezen. In de lagere school heb ik veel boeken moeten lezen, onder andere Harry Potter boeken. In die tijd heb ik ook veel Star Wars strips gelezen want die vond ik, in tegenstelling tot andere strips, wel leuk om te lezen. In de eerste graad van het secundair onderwijs heb ik ook een aantal boeken moeten lezen. In die periode heb ik ook veel boeken gelezen van de schrijver John Flanagan. Hij heeft de boeken van de series De Grijze Jager en Broederband geschreven. Van deze 2 reeksen heb ik een paar boeken gelezen omdat mijn ouders ze ook lazen en ze het goede boeken vonden. Lezen deed ik altijd s ’avonds voor het slapen.

Het recente leesverleden

In mijn recente leesverleden heb ik eigenlijk geen boeken uit eigen wil gelezen, alleen maar boeken voor school. Dat komt omdat ik vind dat er veel leukere dingen zijn dan boeken lezen. Strips lees ik ook niet graag. Ik lees ongeveer 4 boeken per jaar voor school en momenteel ben ik geen boek aan het lezen. Ik ga ook nooit naar de bibliotheek om een boek te halen.

Inhoud: Terwijl men zich in het koninkrijk van Araluen voorbereidt op de oorlog tegen Morgarath, vergezellen Will en Arnaut de Grijze Jager Gilan op een missie naar Celtica. De dorpen in Celtica blijken uitgestorven te zijn. Alleen het uitgehongerde meisje Evanlyn kan hun vertellen waarom: Morgarath heeft zijn leger van Wargals gestuurd om de Celten te onderwerpen. Gilan keert direct huiswaarts om dit nieuws aan de koning over te brengen. Intussen ontdekken Will, Arnaut en Evanlyn de werkelijke redenen van Morgaraths handelen: alles wijst op een verrassingsaanval op het koninkrijk. Zullen de vrienden dit onheil weten te voorkomen? De Brandende Brug is het tweede deel in een spannende serie over Will en zijn vrienden van Kasteel Redmont.
