Wonder Wombat is actually good friends with Wonder Woman. She has even invited Diana to the Farm League Meetings. The Pets love it when Diana attends the meetings because she's the only one who understands what they actually say and, acts as a bridge to the Main Justice League.

Historical American Association Baseball in Milwaukee
Continuing our exploration of historical Milwaukee sports, we have the Junior World Series winning game for the 1951 Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers defeated the Montreal Royals in 6 games to win the series, ending in a 13-10 victory for Milwaukee. After three innings, the Royals were up 10-4, before being shut out for the rest of the game. Al Unser tied the game in the 6th, followed up by Luis Olmo’s triple in the 7th, bringing the Brewers back from a 9-point deficit. The Junior World Series, called the Little World Series from 1904 to 1931, was held between the International League (IL) and the American Association (AA) from 1932 to 1975.
The Milwaukee Brewers began in the American Association from 1902 to 1952. They were Class AAA from 1946 to 1952 and affiliated with the Boston Braves. The Brewers won the Junior World Series in 1936, 1947, and 1951. The team played in the same field for its entire tenure. Originally built in 1888 and called Athletic Park until its renaming to Borchert Field in 1928, it was located on the North side of the city on Chambers Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets. The field was used as the Milwaukee home park for the Green Bay Packers in 1933 before they moved their games to the Wisconsin State Fair Grounds the following year. The field was demolished following the construction of County Stadium in 1953, where the current major league iteration of the Brewers play. In the 1953 season, the Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee, giving the city its first MLB franchise which lasted until the team’s relocation to Atlanta in 1966. The Braves won one World Series while in Milwaukee in 1957 against the New York Yankees.
The Montreal Royals were part of a number of minor leagues in their early years from 1897 to 1917 before settling into the International League in 1928, where they remained until 1960. They were Class AAA from 1946 to 1960 and the top farm club of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Jackie Robinson played with the Royals for the 1946 season, a team recognized as one of the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time by the National Baseball Association and winners of the Junior World Series. After the Royals folded in 1960, the city began pushing for an MLB franchise, which they received in 1969 as the Montreal Expos in the National League. The Expos had a rocky history and eventually moved to Washington, DC, in 2004 and became the Washington Nationals. The Nats won the 2019 World Series against the Houston Astros, the franchise’s first title.

Commercial Insurance
Commercial Insurance for New York City: Insurance is a type of risk management. There are many different types of insurance, and each can be different from one to the next. Which XFL team should you root for?
Tumblr media
Photo by Matthew Pearce/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
There are eight XFL teams, but which should you support? We’re here to help.
The NFL season is officially over and the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions for the first time in 50 years. Now it’s time for sports fans to turn their attention to the NBA, NHL, and college basketball seasons, which are all in full swing.
But for some, there’s never enough football. Luckily for those folks, the XFL is here.
The Vince McMahon-led league ran for one season back in 2001. It was a wild ride, complete with weird rules, WWE flair, and surprisingly good football. Now it’s back with more off-the-wall rule changes, albeit less wrestling influence.
There are eight teams for the XFL’s reboot:
Dallas Renegades
DC Defenders
Houston Roughnecks
Los Angeles Wildcats
New York Guardians
Seattle Dragons
St. Louis Battlehawks
Tampa Bay Vipers
So who should you root for? Here’s a guide to pick an XFL favorite:
For the fan who roots for the hometown team
Three of the four most populated cities in the United States (New York, Los Angeles, and Houston) have an XFL franchise. The other five cities are all have at least a few hundred thousand people too. So even though there are only eight teams, a big chunk of the U.S. population won’t have to think too hard about which team to support.
Even if you’re not in one of those metropolitan areas, one Reddit user created a chart that can help you find your nearest XFL franchise:
View post on imgur.com
It isn’t a perfect fit for everyone. Most people in Phoenix probably won’t jump on the LA Wildcats bandwagon, and there likely aren’t many in Charlotte who feel kinship with DC Defenders fans. International football watchers might not care at all about the U.S. geography of the franchises.
Luckily for those who don’t have an XFL team anywhere nearby, there are other ways to pick a favorite.
For the uniform-loving fan
This is a bit subjective, but here’s SB Nation’s definitive rankings of each XFL team’s uniforms:
Battlehawks
Renegades
Guardians
Dragons
Vipers
Roughnecks
Wildcats
Defenders
The Battlehawks nailed it with a look that’s both classic and innovative, highlighted by an oversized logo that stretches across the top of the helmet. The Defenders have a boring red-and-white look that’s straight out of an awful State Farm commercial.
For the “oh hey, I know that name” fan
There’s nobody with anything near Tim Tebow-level fame in the XFL ranks. But there are a few players who built a name for themselves in the college ranks, even if they couldn’t cut it in the NFL. Here are a couple notables from each team:
Dallas Renegades
Landry Jones, quarterback
Cameron Artis-Payne, running back
Ben Roethlisberger’s longtime backup was cut loose by the Steelers in 2018 after five seasons. Now Jones is arguably the face of the XFL after being the first player signed by the league. He’ll be joined in the backfield by Artis-Payne, a former Auburn and Panthers running back.
DC Defenders
Cardale Jones, quarterback
Matt Elam, safety
Jones was a national championship-winning quarterback at Ohio State, so — if nothing else — he’s got a special place in the heart of Buckeyes fans forever. Elam was a Ravens first-round pick in 2013.
Houston Roughnecks
Sammie Coates, wide receiver
Kony Ealy, defensive end
Coates was drafted by the Steelers to be the starter opposite Antonio Brown, but that never came to fruition. He did record 435 yards and two touchdowns in 2016, though. Ealy had 14 sacks in three seasons with the Panthers and saved his best ever game for Super Bowl 50, when he recorded three sacks and an interception.
Los Angeles Wildcats
Josh Johnson, quarterback
Tre McBride, wide receiver
Johnson bounced around the NFL as a backup for about a decade and got four games of starting action with Washington in 2018. The Lions reportedly tried to sign Johnson in November, but were blocked from doing so by the XFL. McBride was a receiver and returner who spent most of time in the NFL with the Titans and Bears.
New York Guardians
Matt McGloin, quarterback
Joe Horn Jr., wide receiver
McGloin spent four seasons as the Raiders’ backup after earning the Burlsworth Trophy (nation’s best player who began as a walk-on) at Penn State. Horn was briefly with the Ravens, but it’s his father’s lengthy career with the Saints that makes his name stand out.
Seattle Dragons
Keenan Reynolds, wide receiver
Will Sutton, defensive tackle
Reynolds was a star at Navy, where he finished with 31 passing touchdowns and 88 rushing touchdowns. Sutton was the back-to-back Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year while at Arizona State.
St. Louis Battlehawks
Christine Michael, running back
Matt Jones, running back
Michael was a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and Jones was a third-rounder in 2015. Michael bounced on and off the Seahawks roster a few times, and scored seven touchdowns for the team in 2016. Jones scored seven touchdowns in his two seasons with Washington. Now the two will team up in the Battlehawks backfield.
Tampa Bay Vipers
Aaron Murray, quarterback
Quinton Flowers, quarterback/running back
Murray is still the SEC’s all-time leader in passing yards after throwing for 13,166 yards at Georgia. He’s also the brother of a winner of The Bachelorette. Flowers was a prolific dual-threat quarterback at South Florida who wasn’t able to produce as an NFL running back. The Vipers have him listed at both positions.
For the fair-weather fan
There’s nothing with wanting to root for a winner — especially when you don’t have any ties to an XFL team to begin with. It’s tough to tell which team will come out on top, but here are the preseason championship odds, via DraftKings:
Renegades: +350
Guardians: +400
Vipers: +450
Defenders: +500
Wildcats: +650
Roughnecks: +900
Battlehawks: +1000
Dragons: +1200
The Renegades have an experienced quarterback in Jones and former BCS National Championship-winning coach in Bob Stoops. No team is way ahead of the pack, though.
For the “you pick for me” fan
Congratulations, you’re a fan of the St. Louis Battlehawks.

10 To Watch : Mayor’s Edition 72919
RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 29 : MAYOR’S EDITION
with Jacob Aere
Forbes named the most valuable franchises in sports, led by the Dallas Cowboys, who for the fourth consecutive year landed atop the list. The study values the Cowboys at $5 billion, with the Yankees second on the list at $4.6 billion, and Spain’s Real Madrid in third with a valuation of $4.24 billion. Rounding out the top ten are Barcelona ($4.02 billion), the Knicks ($4 billion), Manchester United ($3.81 billion), the Patriots ($3.8 billion), the Lakers ($3.7 billion), the Golden State Warriors ($3.5 billion), the New York Giants ($3.3 billion), and the Dodgers ($3.3 billion). The NFL dominates the overall list with 26 teams in the top 50. A major contributor was the league’s lucrative media rights deals with CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN, and DirecTV, which saw each team receive more than $260 million last year. Way behind the NFL was the NBA, which had nine teams on the list. Eight European soccer clubs made the list, as did seven MLB franchises. Cowboys owner and Sport Business Handbook contributor Jerry Jones has been credited with driving up the franchise’s value since purchasing it for $150 million in 1989.
The cost of the Raiders' new Vegas stadium has risen to $1.9 billion. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal (LVRJ), the Las Vegas Stadium Authority has reportedly approved $40 million worth of additions to the build, including 20 more suites and a field-level club area near the venue’s north end zone. The LVRJ report added that close to $1 billion has so far been spent on the construction of the 65,000-seat stadium. The new venue is expected to be ready for the 2020 season, when the Raiders are scheduled to relocate from Oakland to Las Vegas. The construction project, of which $750 million is being funded by taxpayers, has now passed the halfway stage, with the next major task being the installation of the cable steel roofing system that will support the stadium’s translucent roof. The latest update comes a month after the franchise appointed AEG Facilities to operate the new stadium. Right now, the Raiders are reluctantly in the spotlight as HBO’s “Hard Knocks” documents their every move during NFL preseason camp.
World Cup star Alex Morgan looking to launch female-focused media venture. Morgan, co-captain of the USWNT and World Cup champion, is planning to launch her own media venture focused on storytelling, specifically content for girls created by female athletes. The unnamed project is one of many off-field pursuits for the 30-year-old, recently named one of TIME's 100 most influential people. Morgan has written a series of children’s books about soccer called “The Kicks,” and last year acted in her first movie, a sports comedy called “Alex & Me.” Her sponsors include Nike Inc., Coca-Cola Co., AT&T, and Secret, a deodorant brand owned by Procter & Gamble. Morgan reportedly isn’t planning to launch it in partnership with any major media companies – rather, it’s part of a larger push by women on the team to advocate for gender equality in sports and beyond. “We’re authentic to who we are and what we stand for, and we’re becoming more brave and comfortable in our own skin,” Morgan said. This latest venture shows how the women of the USWNT can continue to use their championship platform to speak up about important issues.
The Oklahoma City Thunder partnered with the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum to unveil their new City Edition uniforms, a "charcoal and gold Nike uniform [that] pays respect to those affected" by the 1995 bombing there. The Oklahoman reported that it has "long been a Thunder tradition to bring each player to the memorial when he joins the team," but now the team will "put its own imprint on the museum." The team "plans to underwrite a permanent exhibit that will focus on the 'Oklahoma Standard.'" The "three values associated with that standard -- service, honor and kindness -- are also printed above the City jersey’s tag." In addition, a time stamp "appears under each: 9:01, the minute before the bombing, and 9:03, the minute after." The "survivor tree, a 90-year old elm that withstood the blast, appears on the waist band of the shorts." The Thunder also "pledged to fund free admission to the museum once a month" during 2020. The jerseys – a touching way for basketball fans to honor those lost in the tragedy almost 25 years ago – will be available to purchase at a later date.
Williamson signs landmark deal with Jordan Brands. Pelicans forward Zion Williamson's deal with Jordan Brand is for seven years and $75 million, according to a source cited by Forbes. In DC, The Washington Post notes for "comparison purposes," LeBron James signed a seven-year, $87 million deal with Nike in 2003. Williamson "arrives in the league as arguably the most-hyped prospect since James." Rockets guard Russell Westbrook and Thunder guard Chris Paul "have signature lines with Jordan Brand, but as an ascendant superstar, Williamson can quickly become the face of the brand." ESPN reported Williamson "ultimately turned down a higher offer from Puma" and as much as $15 million annually from Chinese brands Li-Ning and Anta "in order to wear Michael Jordan's brand." Williamson could see also his already impressive social media following expand after signing the Jordan Brand deal. Jordan has 33.1 million total followers, with 55% of those on Instagram. Williamson became a social media juggernaut due to his high school and college exploits, amassing almost four million Instagram followers and 390,000 on Twitter. Clearly, this sneaker lace up is a win-win for Williamson and the Jordan Brand.
Nasdaq makes a bet on sports gambling. The New York-based stock-exchange group announced a deal with UK betting platform Football Index to help build its trading platform using tools similar to those Nasdaq uses on traditional stock exchanges. The four-year-old, privately held Football Index launched a virtual “stock market” in 2014 in which participants buy shares in star players like Lionel Messi or Harry Kane. The site provides a mix of fantasy sports and regular sports betting with elements of stock market speculation. The Football Index deal will be the first in which the Nasdaq brand will be visible to gambling customers. Nasdaq has other sports-betting clients including the Hong Kong Jockey Club, which has a monopoly on the Chinese territoryʼs sports-betting market. It also has an agreement to provide betting technology for the horse racing unit of Australiaʼs Tabcorp, a lottery and gambling giant. In both those cases, Nasdaq has supplied back-end technology but its logo and branding did not appear on any consumer-facing products. Football Index says the ultimate goal is to create “recreational markets for retail traders in something they understand a lot better than” traditional financial instruments, such as currencies.
MLS WORKS showcases the soccer league’s philanthropy during 2019 All-Star Week. According to Orlando City FC, MLS’ philanthropic group is rolling out a slate of community-focused initiatives and events in the Orlando area for the MLS All-Star Game on July 31. MLS will offset a portion of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with All-Star Week festivities by purchasing 2,600 carbon offsets from a clean cookstove project in Africa. Supporting the Orlando City Foundation’s commitment to urban agriculture, MLS will invest in a community garden as part of the MLS WORKS + Target All-Star Community Day. And in partnership with Fleet Farming and their Edible Landscape service, a garden will be installed at Neptune Middle School. MLS will also provide funding for South Street Urban Farm’s education program in the Parramore area of downtown Orlando. The charity arm of MLS will also team up to combat hunger and support the Special Olympics as the MLS All-Stars take on La Liga’s Atletico Madrid.
Wasserman Media Group launches The Collective with $1 million for women in sports. According to Philanthropy Women, Wasserman unveiled its new program July 13 and the Collective will offer resources for female-focused initiatives, utilizing the full reach of Wasserman entities to support business and client campaigns. Among the Foundation’s grant recipients are Women in Sports and Events (WISE) and the City of Los Angeles’s Evolve Entertainment Fund. Currently, Wasserman represents 56% of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, 26 WNBA players, and “a number of women Olympians who have won a total of 37 gold medals since 2010.” Representing some of the top women in sports such as Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach, Mia Hamm, and Katie Ledecky, Wasserman Media Group has furthered its commitment to increasing the prominence of top female athletes.
Kevin Durant helps to send kids from Prince George, Maryland to college. The newly-signed Brooklyn Net has opened the Durant Center, an educational facility in his hometown. According to BET, the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation has committed $10 million over the next decade in a partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools and College Track to help minority low-income high school students earn a college degree. The Durant Center is the first College Track center on the East Coast, with the inaugural class of the Prince George’s county program totaling 69 students of color. Enrolled students attend the center after school for tutoring and advising where they are taught life skills, including time and stress management. Last year, Durant donated $3 million to University of Texas Austin, in addition to supporting organizations like the Tulsa Dream Center, Larkin Street Youth Services, and Black Girls Code in San Francisco, and was named ESPN’s 2018 Humanitarian of the Year. This only builds on his philanthropy track record.
The Tom Hatcher charity golf tournament raises nearly $100,000. Six years ago, Tom Hatcher had no idea what he was starting when he decided to organize a charity golf tournament. According to The Daily Times, Hatcher is the circuit court clerk for Blount County, Tennessee and was moved to action by his father, who was in the midst of a five-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. At this year’s tournament, more than 300 golfers competed for two causes close to Hatcher’s heart. The sixth-annual event raised roughly $100,000, which will be split up and donated to Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Inc. and the Blount County Boys & Girls Club. The total donations have increased every year, with Hatcher’s inaugural tournament raising $23,000 in 2014. This one’s total bested last year’s by roughly $20,000. By mixing politics, sports, and charity, Hatcher continues to see growing success in raising funds and awareness for the Boys & Girls club as well as Alzheimer’s Tennessee.

1920-1940: Roosevelt, Hitler, Stalin: The Battle of Ideas.
Tumblr media
As American troops returned home from war, the America they returned to was becoming both more conservative and more modern at the same time.
The 18th Amendment (1919) banned alcohol in the United States and led to the ascendancy of criminal gangs. We passed racist and antisemitic immigration laws, which would actually serve as an inspiration to Hitler. Nativist attitudes flourished across the country. Millions joined the anti-Catholic and Prohibition-enthusiast Ku Klux Klan (essentially a racist Birth of a Nation cosplay group), which ended up dominating politics in multiple states and sending hundreds to the Democratic National Convention in 1924. Lynchings were also rampant. John Thomas Scopes was prosecuted for teaching evolution in Tennessee. Our ‘return to normalcy’ was essentially just hating and suppressing anything that was not a specific kind of white, Christian and anti-intellectual.
But this was also the era of the Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age. Celebrities were made on the big screen and over the airwaves. Advertising had a golden age. There were flappers and speakeasies. The Harlem Renaissance, the Lost Generation, and a swath of lauded writers and poets created their masterpieces during this era. And New York replaced London as the center of the world economy. But it all stood on very shaky ground.
So much of the economic good times hinged on German war reparations, a thing Germans saw as a national humiliation. But America bankers loaned money to Germany, which in turn paid Britain and France, who paid the American bankers. So those bankers got filthy rich, while Europe’s economy was on the verge of collapse. And out of this environment, Nazism was born.
It probably also didn’t help that Benito Mussolini and his brand of fascism rose to power in Italy in 1922. And that he wanted a rebirth for his country, opposed communism and liberalism, hated the Treaty of Versailles and was appealing to the working class. Mussolini’s rise also inspired Hitler (who was getting a following for being a powerful orator) to stage a coup in Berlin in 1923. The coup failed, but Hitler became nationally famous and ended up writing Mein Kampf while in jail.
Then the Great Depression happened. And without the necessary help of American banks, Germany’s economy collapsed. Unemployment there was over 30% and the German powers that be, who were scared shitless of communism, decided to cozy up to the country’s most famous anti-communist.
Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933. And when Germany’s parliament building, the Reichstag, burnt down the same year, Hitler took the opportunity to blame the communists, arrest them in mass, and consolidate his own power. Commie hating bankers in London and New York totally didn’t mind.
In 1932, tens of thousands of broke army veterans descended on Washington DC demanding their cash bonuses, which were not due until 1945. President Hoover, who didn’t want to involve the government in Depression relief efforts, ordered the protesters’ campsites to be removed. And Douglas MacArthur (along with Dwight Eisenhower and George Patton), fearing a communist revolution, went about tear gassing the veterans and setting their tent cities on fire. The next year, with a new president in the White House, the Bonus Army troops were visited by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, which diffused the situation. One soldier commented, “Hoover sent the Army. Roosevelt sent his wife.”
FDR came into office on the heels of his famous inauguration speech, inheriting a horrible economic situation with 25% unemployment. But he proclaimed a New Deal and went about stabilizing the banks, getting Americans back to work and saving farming in his first 100 days. He also repealed Prohibition. Wall Street hated him for it.
In 1933, there was even an alleged fascist coup being planned by Wall Street bankers and wealthy businessmen to overthrow FDR. Smedley Butler even testified about it before Congress. The press thought it was a hoax and nobody was called in to testify. But some of Butler’s statements have since been confirmed. And organizations like the American Liberty League, which were headed by wealthy business elites, were trying everything in their power to oppose the New Deal and hint that FDR was a communist.
Several American banks and businesses actively aided the Nazi regime. Thomas Watson of IBM, Alfred Sloan of GM and Henry Ford were awarded the Grand Cross of the German Eagle for their efforts. Ford, a pamphlet-writing antisemite served as an inspiration to Hitler. Ford-Werke used slave labor and had alliances with I.G. Farben (the maker of Zykon-B). But Ford, along with GM were given reparations after World War II. The Bank for International Settlements also had close relationships with the Nazis. So did Chase Bank. And JP Morgan. Both of which remained open in Vichy France.
Anticommunist William Randolph Hearst never attacked Hitler in his press. And one of the biggest American celebrities of the 1920′s, Charles Lindberg (another big anticommunist and friend of Henry Ford), became the face of the noninterventionist America First movement and only a few steps away from being a full blown Nazi.
These were morally confusing times for many Americans. Because of war profiteering in World War I, isolationism was en vogue. At the same time, a battle between communism and fascism was moving across the globe. And one of FDR’s big regrets was not getting involved in the Spanish Civil War, taking sides in the fight between the two ideologies.
Coming out of the Depression had also created a dark optimism in the hearts of many ordinary Americans. Hundreds of thousands of Americans (including many famous writers) joined Communist groups. They built the CIO and battled for civil rights. Henry Wallace admired Soviet social programs, including universal health care, free public education and subsidized housing. They also had a full-employment economy and were rapidly industrializing. But many Communist sympathizers in the United States only saw the sanitized version that was actually taking place in the Soviet Union.
Stalin rose to power by being a ruthless and violent sociopath. He acted more like a Tsar who used Marxism to justify whatever evil, backwards shit he was doing. There were famines, mass starvations, possibly genocides, show trials, secret police and gulags. Something like 13 million people died on his watch. The question is whether or not he was a logical extension of Lenin’s ideology.
Whereas Leon Trotsky wanted a permanent revolution (Marx believed the revolution had to be global) because the Soviet Union didn’t have enough wealth to succeed on its own, Stalin believed in socialism in one country. He was a paranoid psycho who just wanted to keep control at home with a police state. There was no other real ideology. And he had Trotsky killed with an ice axe to the head for his efforts. The irony was that the death of Trotsky meant the death of international communism and the end of the revolution. Stalin didn’t want global conquest. The fascists did. And it was this misunderstanding of Stalinism that would eventually lead to the Cold War.
