When I saw the notification for an ask from you I was very curious to know what it was about. I did not expect this, but I actually should have, considering what we talked about on and off in the last weeks 😂.

I absolutely do love him hairy, and I'm very much salty about not having seen him as Matt with his lovely chest hair. I seriously hope that Disney will do right by us 🤤.

Writing Under a Penname: IngramSpark Vs Amazon

When I started my foray into publishing a book under the name "Afipia Felis" my goal was (shockingly) to use that alias on all things that are associated with my book. I have a career outside of writing that pays the bills. I am not comfortable with the way the current publishing industry encourages writes to use their name/face/life as a brand to sell more books. To me, it feels greasy and my "brand" is already associated with my "real" job. I always loved how William Goldman made up an author and I wanted to do the same. Hence how you all got this.

Pseudonyms and writing go way back. There are numerous reasons why an author may choose to write under a penname. In publishing circles it is a well respected tradition and is often encouraged.

So why does IngramSpark make it so hard?!

On Amazon KDP, writing under a penname is effortless. Open up the main page, click "Create", select your book type [ebook, paperback, hardcover, series, or "kindle vella" (similar to WattPad)] and plug in your penname under "author".

Then, use your legal name, legal address and EIN or SSN for payment.

Next step is your publisher's name (also known as an imprint) which will be found under the product details section. If you are publishing with the free isbn Amazon gives you the publisher's name in the details section will read "Amazon" or simply won't list it (see any Kindle Unlimited book). If you publish with your own isbn, just put your publisher name after it.

Done. Simple. Anonymous. Free.

(Well, aside from buying the isbn if you want but that's on Bowker not Amazon)

What about IngramSpark?

Well... to be blunt. It's a huge pain.

Sure... IngramSpark makes it look easy. Go to their website, set up your account under your legal name, click "add title" from the menu on the left side, pick your format ["print and ebook" $50 vs "print" $50 vs "ebook" $25] and then click that little "add imprint" button on the right of "select imprint". Seems simple, right? It is simple... right up until Barnes and Noble website ignores all of that and lists the publisher as whatever you typed under your legal name. You know. The name on your bank account that you'll be receiving your payments to.

What?!

"Any book in the Ingram/Lightning Source/IngramSpark print-on-demand catalog can automatically be available to Barnes & Noble’s customers through www.barnesandnoble.com and through customer special order request in the stores, at Barnes and Noble's discretion. B&N does not recognize an imprint name. They will list the name used for the publishing company." -This article which is well hidden in the help section

Well, how obvious it it?

Does that rather defeat the purpose of writing under a Penname?

Yes.

What can I do about it?

Get a DBA or start a legal business ($25-300 depending on if you do it or you hire a lawyer and it's not totally anonymous either), wait 2 weeks, get an EIN, wait 2-4 weeks for the ss4 letter to arrive in the main, set up a business bank account (Watch! Many have monthly fees and may require $50-100 deposit to open!), and then have your payments go to that. Then, come tax time, prepare to fill out a 1099.

That sounds like an expensive pain.

Yup.

And Amazon didn't need any of that?

Nope. For once, Jeff Bezos is not the villain.

That's stupid.
