What was it about pre-bluegrass songwriters that they refused to shrink from reality?
Monroe incorporated this ethic into his new invention, bluegrass music. David Davis and crew remind us of that tragic but soulful stretch of musical time with an immaculate, brother duet and the most faithful, Monroe-style mandolin picking we've heard since the Father of Bluegrass spent his last days on earth. Only Nashville Bluegrass Band's Mike Compton is Davis' equal in this foundational style.
The point here, I think, is that time marches on, but we shouldn't help it along with such flippancy. All the corporate sponsorships in the world don't halt the futility of existence when one is poor, geographically isolated, and alone.
David Davis and The Warrior River Boys don't let us forget that for a minute, and God bless them for it.
Here they are covering Charlie Poole's "Goodbye Mary Dear".

you ever learn something you wish you didn't? I, for example, just learned that between 2008 and 2015 not a single episode of Doctor Who aired that was written by a woman. Between The Sontaran Stratagem, a story with David Tennant as the Doctor, and The Woman Who Lived, a Peter Capaldi story, not a single episode was written by a woman.
