Slayers: A Buffyverse Story
Release date: October 12, 2023.
Original cast members from the beloved TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, reunite for an all-new adventure about connections that never die — even if you bury them. A decade has passed since the epic final battle that concluded Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV). The game-changing spell that gave power to all potential Slayers persists. With new Slayers constantly emerging, things are looking grim for the bad guys. Rebellious vampire Spike is working undercover in Los Angeles with his old pal Clem when he meets feisty, rookie Slayer, Indira, who wants Spike to be her mentor. Stakes intensify as Cordelia Chase emerges from an alternate reality where she alone is the Slayer, and Buffy Summers doesn’t exist. Cordelia enlists Spike’s help with a classic big bad terrorizing her world…his ex, Drusilla. Giles, Anya, Jonathan, and Tara also return, but through the years and the vastness of the multiverse, not everyone is who they used to be…
Writers: Christopher Golden, Amber Benson.
Starring: James Marsters as Spike; Laya DeLeon Hayes as Indira; Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia; Emma Caulfield as Anya and Anyanka; Amber Benson as Tara; James Charles Leary as Clem; Juliet Landau as Drusilla; Anthony Head as Giles; Phina Oruche as Olivia; and Danny Strong as Ghost Jonathan.
Also Featuring: Julia Cho as Ms. Bang; Josh Petersdorf as Kurgan; Juno Dawson as Miranda; Jessica Gardner as Amy Madison; Cheryl Umana as Zantina; Joshua McClenney as Rahim; Denise Pickering as Buzz; Glenda Morgan Brown as Esther; Jasmine Hyde as Althenea; and Michael Swan.

I haven’t been on here in a cow’s age but had to share what I did today with my fellow Esparza Fans:
I BOUGHT TICKETS TO SEE HIM IN GALILEO! 👀
If you hadn’t heard, the musical some of us got to experience in read through version in 2019 at Vassar where I came thisclose to meeting him but chickened out and just took pictures of him talking to other people has finally gone to production. It’s going to be this summer at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California. I was on the fence but my sister said she was up for the adventure and I clicked purchase this morning!!!! We are going to the June 8 matinee that has a post show discussion!
Merciful heavens I can’t believe I’m going to get to see him on stage again!

Big news today about "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as the show teamed up with Audible to record a new story called "Slayers" that centered on Spike 20 years after the show ended and he's helping out a new teenage slayer Indria in LA pretending to be a villain again. While trying to find a watcher they get caught up exposing a multiverse and in a new reality were Cordelia became the slayer instead of Buffy and the big bad is Drucilla!!! :D The story was written by Amber Benson and Christopher Golden, and James Marsters, Chrisma Carpenter, Anthony Head, Juliet Landau, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, James Charles Leary, and Danny Strong are all back in their roles and newcomer Laya DeLeon Hayes voices Indria.
They're going to be at New York Comic Con next month too revealing more about this and makes me wonder if others will be in the story too that they'll announce there. This story does remind me a bit of some of my old "Buffy" novels that was a 4 part series that included Buffy being trapped in another universe and us seeing one on the show before too. Also curious if what happened in the comics also happened in this story as well and what they'll mention about the other characters, and if this gets a print version as some of Audible's stories have.
The story premiere's October 12th and their NYCC panel is the next day the 13th.

thinking about how spike didnt know who buffy was in the superstar episode which implies that he wasnt in love with her in that universe which implies, given the context, he was in love with jonathan.

So how weak is the Strong book anyway?
Eh, not too weak honestly. Like it's got problems, don't get me wrong, but this is Chess. Everything's got problems. Now I've not yet listened to the recent concert in full, but going off the Kennedy Center book, there are a few big problems (which are somewhat integral to the script but are very easy to fix!)
Oh my god, can we lay off the politics for five minutes? This is hands-down the most political Chess script to date. Chess needs this emotional/political balance to it: go too much in either direction and you break the foundations on which the show is built. Strong swings way too far into the politics. I understand wanting to conextualize the show for modern audiences, but "contextualize" does not mean "shove modern jokes down the audience's throat."
I have to address disabled Freddie because he's... well, I'm not going to say it's a bad choice, and actually I think the Kennedy Center book handles it quite well (not going to touch on what they did in the concert yet), but it causes some story problems. Strong is clearly trying to give Freddie some justification for his actions, but... Freddie needs to be an asshole, it's kind of a major plot point. Without that, Florence seems like a bit of a jerk. For instance, in the 1990 US Tour (which I know is our baby now, but as the person who introduced you all I have to be the one to criticize it), Freddie does very little that's unjustified (Robert Coe was clearly trying to make him a sort of hero), and combined with the very creepy and unwelcome approaches of Anatoly, it's hard to sympathize with Florence's decision. Strong doesn't go quite this far into it, but he's clearly trying to foreshadow Freddie's eventual redemption far too early and it does not work.
The ending. Now, it is not true that Florence's father being alive is a categorically bad ending. It's not entirely in keeping with the rest of the show, it's true, but go and watch the 1990 Long Beach production and you will see how it can work (notably, it has to actually be a sacrifice on Anatoly's part). However, the Strong book does it in the cheesiest way ever and it kind of ruined the whole rest of the show for me. It's one of the weakest Chess endings out there and it needs fixing.
A random pet peeve of mine: four years is a really weird length of time between acts. One year is usual, and three years was the actual usual division between chess matches, so I'd expect one of those. But no, to line up with the politics, Florence and Anatoly are together for a full four years and Molokov never tries to get him back in the meantime.
And honestly, if you fix these few things, you've got yourself a very well-structured London rewrite. It's not perfect, but it has the problems every London version does. But it's better.
