im still so full of excitement & brainrot for this silly little wizard man ok anyway quick tl;dr whilst the carrd is under construction:

basic roleplay/tumblr etiquette. dont be an ass. merlin's default ship is with @worthfuls' alice bingley in every verse. open to shipping but it takes place in its own universe. merlin is adaptable for almost any verse! established verses are as follows; default (takes place anytime in his life, most likely the modern day), star wars, high fantasy, mass effect, ouat (exclusive with alice) & pacific rim. my fc is daniel sharman. my merlin follows multiple fantasy and period tropes, with the bbc show acting as influence for key points in his life, though expanded upon massively. there's a myriad of inspirations for my merlin. im also not an expert on arthurian legend so dont hate me if i get things wrong, just let me know!

Skills.

Hunting Proficiency: Being uprooted from the privileged life he had at age 13, he quickly was taught by Riggs, a militia group, how to hunt, survive, and truly be a man. Well equipped with bows and arrows, setting traps, and tracking, he became one of the best hunters in the group.

Stealth: For being lonesome on and off for several years, it’s the key to his survival. Started as a kid from a place of fear and evolved into a strength overtime. It’s allowed the feasibility of traveling alone and evading groups and the infected alike. When in quarantine zones pick up on key individuals and information by remaining a shadow.

First Aid: Learned under the guidance of Riggs. After witnessing a crush injury while on a raid, was thrown to patch a member while the rest of the group eliminated runners that cornered them in a building. Since then has picked up on tips and tricks from the various medical staff of the groups and QZs he’s been a part of over the years.

Positive Traits.

Loyal: If the cause and mission is in alignment with what he believes in, will wholeheartedly support and bring the vision to fruition. Same goes for individualized relationships. If the trust, safety, and care is present and reciprocal, is inclined to go to the ends of the earth for someone.

Realist: A logical thinker. Information is of utmost importance to him. Knowing the details and angles to a situation before making any definitive decision. The truth and reality may be a tough pill to swallow, but will accept it as is and move forward.

Adaptable: Views himself like a chameleon. Can blend in and adapt rather well to the environment and surroundings. It’s a survival tactic that he garnered since his youth, but willing to show his value and benefit to whoever is around him.

Negative Traits.

Reserved: Always keeps his cards close to his chest due to the betrayal he experienced as a kid. Incredibly cordial to all those he encounters, but hardly talks about himself beyond the general commonalities of their day unless he trusts them.

Stoic: Difficult for him to emote. Learned that vulnerability was a sign of weakness by the Riggs and so only the lucky ones behind closed doors get to witness that side of him. Can be a bit apathetic at times, but tries to find perspective with most things.

Headstrong: May take various attempts to persuade him to change his mind. Unless something is clearly and blatantly rational that there is no reason to criticize the objective at hand, he will debate and argue until he hits a wall.

Biography.

TW: mention of death, violence, and blood

Alexandria, VA → April 2009 to April 2019 Mateus was the youngest of three born in the spring of 2009 and raised in Alexandria, VA alongside his sisters. Both of his parents, Julian and Kimberly Baker were involved in government. His mother the attorney general of the state and her father a consultant to the local military base. When the infection began to spread, he was only four years old. His mother, a huge proponent of FEDRA, provided him with the privilege and protection that a majority of those in the Alexandria quarantine zone did not have. It made them a huge target. A few weeks before his tenth birthday, a militia group known as the Riggs took up arms in the zone, executing both of his parents right in front of his eyes in the middle of the night. Separated from his sisters, the Brooders took him as collateral to convert this sheltered boy into a man.

The Midwest → April 2019 to August 2027 Was at the mercy of Kevin Riggs and his followers for several years. Everyone looked to him as Kevin’s son throughout the years. Dealt with a lot of brutal environments as they migrated across the country to find new terrain and resources as they continued to dwindle through the years. Witnessed a lot of deaths, ruthlessness, and destruction at the hands of the Riggs, some in which he reluctantly participated solely to survive. His mission was to destroy FEDRA and spread his support of social Darwinism in every zone they conquered. There were always eyes on him and so the window of opportunity to break away from Kevin and his yes men was severely limited. It was while they were setting up camp in a new zone that a native of the zone led stalkers and bloaters out of a righteous anger and spite. It was there in the chaos that Mateus grabbed his belongings and fled. A few weeks of hiding and dodging got him out of their grasp and into a place of freedom unlike ever before. For the first time in his life, he was on his own. No matter how he felt about Kevin and the boys, they taught him how to fend for himself and survive in the world where one was either the predator or the prey.

The Lone Traveler → August 2027 to May 2030 The first year and a half was a rough adjustment, one in which pushed him to the edge on many occasions. It tested his grit and will to live, something that was questioned in the darkest of times. There were several close calls, but he had to dig deep to survive these plains. A few individuals he’s met along the way began to help reshape his perspective. Even with the Riggs he knew what they were doing was morally wrong, but he didn’t have a voice then. On his travels he ran into a caravan of people heading to Utah. A couple Sarah and Ryan in the group were the ones who began to help him shape and formalize his thoughts that were fragmented for so long. The group received him with open arms which was jarring to Mateus, but he decided to trust for once and was glad he leaned into the fear. Together they made their way to Salt Lake City, where a rebel group known as the Fireflies had fortified the area and were accepting newcomers into the community.

Salt Lake City, UT → May 2030 to November 2038 Being in Salt Lake City fueled him with a new outlook and purpose in life. Offering the skills he learned along the way to the betterment of the community gave him value and softened his heart to the cold exterior that was created around him from the time he was ten. Beginning to find his foothold in the group, he pledged his allegiance to the Fireflies. Committed to their vision, Matt was fully invested in supporting the mission. Leading the hunting and scavenging runs as well as training new members on the way of the community, he was finding contentment in this new world. The bonus to being in Salt Lake was meeting Eva. She was a breath of fresh air and sure he’s had his few flings along the way, but there was a different energy about her. Quick to humble him on many occasions, for the first time ever Mateus felt like he could be his most authentic self. It was terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time. Before he even knew it, they were engaged. No official ring, but they were committed to one another and despite the terrors of their world, Eva was a place of solace for him and that was everything to the Baker.

Yellowstone Stronghold & Wyoming Militia → November 2038 to April 2039 Things had been well in Salt Lake until it wasn’t. Shifting a change in dynamics with their original leader falling ill, the structures around them were beginning to cave. Eva’s parents wanted to move on and despite his hesitation, his heart remained with his fiancé and by default her parents. The Purged was the end goal. A self-righteous group of individuals which felt like a common theme with all these groups he stumbled upon since he was a child was another hope for sanctuary for the Rhies. Except that desire was never met. An unexpected attack by the left Mateus with the difficult action and grief-ridden fiancé. At this point the two of them were on their own and all Mateus was seeking was shelter so they could regroup. The plan was to return to Salt Lake, but the state of Eva’s grief consuming them, worried him for the long road back, and they ended up at the mercy of Yennefer and the Grizzlies. Reminding him much of Riggs, he agreed to go on this planned raid against Idaho Falls as payment for giving Eva and him a temporary home. It was supposed to be like all the other ones he’s gone on, except the tactics the Grizzlies used were far more unorthodox and corrupt than he’d ever witnessed. Charged with having to lay out some of the ammunition around the Idaho Falls infrastructure, Mateus ended up getting injured in the process. Fleeing for safety as far as he could from the territory, there wasn’t enough self-patching to manage the bullet that was lodged in his shoulder. Not sure if it was a few hours or a couple of days, all he could remember was looking up at the stars and thinking of Eva before everything went black.

Jackson Town, WY → April 2039 to May 2041 He woke up to a sliver of light and someone listening to his heart in a makeshift medical room. The Baker was informed a hunting party had found him unconscious and bleeding out. After a few days of interrogation, he was released into the public. Wanting to pay for the expenses and resources of keeping him alive, he made a deal to help their community for two years. The only motivation for him was to get back to Eva. Leaving her in that decrepit place in the hands of the Grizzlies, he was only hoping she would persevere and hold out for him to return. Mateus kept to himself for the most part, did what he needed to do, paid his dues before thanking them for their hospitality before heading back to the Grizzlies compound. Showing up outside the walls with a peace offering of infection tied to chains for their deluded tactics and advantage, all he wanted was Eva. They claimed they had no information on her and no one within the compound by that name resided there. Perceiving they saw him as a traitor for being missing for a few years, he took it as a cue to leave for the sake of his own life. The Baker could only pray that she got out and if not now then soon.

Lone Traveler → May 2041 to July 2044 Dissuaded by his experiences with these various camps and zones he’s been a part of Mateus figured he was better off on his own. Not veering too far away from the region, he tried to keep an eye out for groups on raids for any indication of Eva’s presence. In the interim, he kept to himself, survived on his own, and oftentimes waited for the day that an infected could take him out. There was no drive, no purpose, all it was now was survival. Perhaps Kevin was right all along. This world was made for the fittest of them all.

Present Day It was while he was scavenging for more resources that he came across a crew of individuals from Idaho Falls who had got surrounded by bloaters. Seeing that they came from a camp, he found it advantageous that if he saved them, they would supply him with what he needed. Helping them defend and take out the infected, he garnered their appreciation and was brought back to their camp. Even a fresh bath and bed would do him well. Agreeing, he stumbled upon Idaho Falls and with the fearlessness with which he willingly helped the group he was asked to stay longer. Solitude has become his new normal. There’s uncertainty with immersing himself into a world of civilians once more. At the end of the day, you're either predator or prey.

Arcs

The Rekindling - Things have changed over the years since he’s last seen Eva. Running into her in these walls is going to be earth shattering. He’s no longer the man she once loved or knew, so where does that leave them? Has she moved on? Will he still be enough? Are they better off alone because at the end of the day all he wants for her is the best and he no longer is that man.

The Traitor - No one is aware of the knowledge this man has. Blending in like a chameleon, he kept his head down during his few months with the Grizzlies and two years socializing and eating dinner with those in Jackson Town. Some of his knowledge may be old news, but any insight on a different territory could be useful to the Volkovs. Mateus may not agree with the actions made, but if it’ll protect him or even Eva in the long run it may be to his benefit to share some news.
