S3 - E5 - The High School Reunion
Tumblr media
Nahhh you see, I'm not buying the episode's ending narrative of Dan always having been liked. Not with both Chris and Dan talking about them getting bullied/ridiculed. As someone who grew up with undiagnosed ADHD/Autism, my ignorance has always been exploited to be the butt of the joke. And I don't think the ending is any different from that. (strap in, it's a long one)
In this episode we learn Dan bullied Chris back then too, but we ALL know Dan is a very reactionary guy who acts largely on "setting things straight". It's not that outlandish to think Dan either acted his frustrations from getting bullied out on Chris OR Chris being caught in the crossfires of Dan getting back on someone.
And Chris honestly had it Terrible... Just look at how much he's been with his class and done for them, and how little they remember him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elise wants Chris to have a good time and reunite with old friends (to get rid of Dan), so when Dan shows up she locks him in a locker... And he responds like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's BEEN in those lockers before. His classmates PUT him there.
Tumblr media
And he desperately wants Chris to see nothing's changed.
Tumblr media
But Chris only remembers High School positively on his end... (even though he got wedgied too) So what gives?
It's because Chris stayed ignorant, but Dan didn't. Dan likely used to be just as ignorant as Chris, trusted people, and got hurt because of it. He learned not to trust people and to assume everyone's out to get him, because it's easier than getting humiliated or tricked, again. Chris never did! He always assumed it was just his friends goofing off, even though he got hurt in the process. And we can feel that in a later scene too.
Tumblr media
Yes, Dan could be saying this because he genuinely thinks the costume is dumb, but if they both were getting bullied, Chris would very likely have been ridiculed for wearing it! So in his messed up Dan way, he DID try to save Chris, because HE'S learned to not trust any smiling faces.
Which is very apparent in the next scene, where he's strung up from the ceiling after he'd fallen.
Tumblr media
If you watch the episode, "BACK OFF" doesn't sound like his usual overly confident and aggressive tone. For a second, he sounds a bit frightened. He's constantly struggling to get out and doesn't say anything besides threatening people to leave him alone. People start listing all the ways he's taken revenge on them..... and then start cheering. Now, usually in a show like this, the main character would stop struggling and be baffled by the positive reception of his appearance.... but not Dan. He keeps warning people to stay away and keeps struggling.
Tumblr media
People are laughing and cheering as they try to get him down, and he starts panicking. some tense music picks up as he flails, music usually used (in other cartoons too) when a character is in a scary situation.
He falls to the ground, looks up at everyone laughing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And runs. He doesn't try to fight anyone, he just runs.
Tumblr media
And Elise and Chris respond with this:
"So your classmates actually LIKED Dan?"
"High school was somehow not as I remembered..."
Tumblr media
So what happened here? Well, that's how they got bullied. That's how it started. And that's often how autistic people get bullied, too. They pretend to be nice to gain your trust, and then exploit that trust to belittle you, bully you and put you into humiliating situations. All while keeping up the "nice" act to make said autistic person doubt themself about whether or not the hurt they feel is warranted or not.
Chris isn't remembering High School wrong... Dan was right. They haven't changed. Even though they remember Dan fondly, he was never their friend. He was their play thing. Their personal jester to poke at and make fun of BECAUSE he reacted and lashed out. Chris never did, which is why he was never deemed "interesting" enough by his peers to be remembered.
Dan even says it himself in the scene after, trying to explain to Chris why it's all fake, but after all these years, Chris is still too ignorant to see it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan is explaining to Chris as clearly as he can, how these people used and bullied them. They took advantage of their struggle to read social cues and used them both for entertainment.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day, they exploit Dan's struggles with social cues again to convince him they all genuinely liked him for who he is (conveniently leaving out all the times they pushed him in lockers)... While in reality, he was only ever good for bringing entertainment. What's even sadder, is that Chris envies him. He still can't see the full picture and wishes he could be in that spotlight.
Showing that ultimately it's not JUST the classmates that haven't changed, but Dan and Chris haven't either.
And it's another reason as to why they're still together after all these years. The only real friends they HAD were each other.

The summer brought a cacophony of sounds, including jack hammers, walls falling, motorized lifts reaching to the ceiling, wires pulled through the ceiling, tile ripping apart, and the huff and puff of working bodies trying to dissuade the heat from taking their breath away. Now what lies before us are exciting times. Delone Catholic football game was the place to be on that Friday night? Do you remember when there was no air conditioning in the school? Do you remember that first day of school, that favorite teacher, that favorite lunch, that treasured dance, that best friend, that snow storm that closed the schools for days, that most challenging class, or that best time ever! After a quarter of a century, I can reminisce with many and remember when myself. Do you remember when there were no uniforms? The 'Gossip Girl' Cast Then Vs. Now Will Make You Feel All Kinds Of Nostalgic
New Post has been published on https://getyourgossip.xyz/the-gossip-girl-cast-then-vs-now-will-make-you-feel-all-kinds-of-nostalgic/
The 'Gossip Girl' Cast Then Vs. Now Will Make You Feel All Kinds Of Nostalgic
Tumblr media
It’s been more than a decade since teen drama favorite Gossip Girl premiered and immersed viewers into the upper crust world of rich high school students’ Manhattan. At the time, the relatively-unknown cast could easily be boiled down to pretty boys and the blonde girl from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Today, with the cast members grown up, it’s a different story. Time flies when you’re watching reruns, and photos of the Gossip Girl cast then vs. now will make you feel nostalgic for your Wednesday nights watching The CW.
Like with any cast of a hit show, the actors’ post-Gossip Girl careers have been filled with hits and misses. While Blake Lively’s popularity has skyrocketed thanks to her eclectic range of movies and her #goals relationship, when was the last time you heard about Taylor Momsen or Chace Crawford? Some of the stars’ recent obscurity makes me curious to see a cast reunion, but for now, I’ll settle with making myself feel old by comparing how each actor has aged since the beginning of the show.
Blake Lively
Tumblr media

Unquestionably the most well-known star at the start of Gossip Girl, Lively’s acting career had only begun two years previously in the The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Gossip Girl almost wasn’t meant to be for her, as Lively intended to turn down the role of Serena van der Woodsen and go to college instead. In a Vanity Fair retrospective about the show, Lively said:
I said, ‘No, I want to go to college. Thank you, though.’ Then they said, ‘O.K., you can go to Columbia [University] one day a week. After the first year [of the show], it’ll quiet down. Your life will go back to normal and you can start going to school. We can’t put it in writing, but we promise you can go.’ So that’s why I said, ‘O.K. You know what? I’ll do this.’
Things didn’t quite work out that way, but everything happens for a reason. Starring in everything from thrillers to historical dramas, Lively has taken box offices by storm since Gossip Girl‘s wrap. She also happens to run a killer Instagram account often featuring her love of baked goods and fashion. Let’s not forget that she’s also one half of Hollywood’s cutest marriage alongside husband Ryan Reynolds.
Yeah, I guess she did OK.
Leighton Meester
Tumblr media
The CW / JC Olivera/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
Following a childhood of making her way through network hits as a guest star, Meester was particularly praised for her Gossip Girl portrayal of Blair. As the show has aged, it’s safe to say that the character remains the most beloved. I definitely still envy her wardrobe.
Since 2012, Meester has proven that she’s a triple threat by having successful forays into the theater and music worlds. She made her Broadway debut in the 2014 revival of Of Mice and Men and released an album, Heartstrings, later that year. Kicking off that busy 2014, Meester also married The O.C. star Adam Brody, causing millennials worldwide to squeal in delight. The couple welcomed a daughter in 2015.
Meester will return to TV this fall in the ABC comedy Single Parents. Blair Waldorf as a frazzled mom? I’m intrigued.
Penn Badgley
Tumblr media
The CW / Bryan Bedder/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
When his character Dan Humphrey was revealed as the true Gossip Girl in the final season, Badgley initially seemed to have taken a hiatus from acting. He focused on working with his band MOTHXR, but like Meester, he’ll soon be back on our TV screens. Badgley is starring in Lifetime’s TV adaptation of Caroline Kepnes’ novel You, which debuts on Sept. 9.
Although his real-life relationship with Lively made my life as a teenager, Badgley is also now married, having wed singer Domino Kirke in 2017.
Ed Westwick
Tumblr media
The CW / Jeff Spicer/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
Ten-plus years later and Westwick still has that Chuck Bass smirk perfected. Since the end of Gossip Girl, the British star has been in several movies, but he most recently made headlines when several women accused him of sexual assault last year. The three alleged assaults are said to have occurred in 2014.
Elite Daily reached out to Westwick’s team for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication. However, Westwick denied the allegations in a statement on Twitter back in November 2017, which has since been deleted. He wrote,
It is disheartening and sad to me that as a result of two unverified and provably untrue social media claims, there are some in this environment who could ever conclude I have had anything to do with such vile and horrific conduct. I have absolutely not, and I am cooperating with the authorities so that they can clear my name as soon as possible.
Chace Crawford
Tumblr media
The CW / Michael Kovac/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
To be fair, I don’t think any of the Gossip Girl cast members ever had an “awkward” phase, but Chace Crawford as Nate in the pilot comes the closest to being the ugly duckling of the group. I blame it on the hair. At the time of the show’s premiere, he was 21 years old and making his television debut. The role made him a teen heartthrob, and in 2009, People named him “Summer’s Hottest Bachelor.” Like the majority of the main cast, he remained a leading star on Gossip Girl until the 2012 series finale.
Although he starred in the short-lived ABC drama Blood & Oil in 2015, Crawford has veered toward more independent projects in recent years. He was involved in the films All About Nina and Eloise and has other movies in store.
Taylor Momsen
