Not irl, just Cyberpunk Red drama again 😅
I just want to say that as myself, I feel so bad for my friend's Rockerboy character cos he's been through so much ;_;
And I feel super bad for backstabbing him as my Netrunner in the beginning of this campaign ;_;
BUT I need to be in character when RPing
My Netrunner abandoned her real name long ago. She goes by her net handle or by the name given to her by her sponsor (actually her bio dad...)
Only her elder brother calls her by her real name when he's exceptionally disappointed with her or when he's concerned about her
As myself, I get that Rockerboy is desperately trying to reconnect with my Netrunner. But as my Netrunner, him calling me by my real name is like an insult to my dead brother
I'm suffering from mild psychosis now. I'm not being rational. To me, it's like Rockerboy thinks he can replace my brother. Who does he think he is? How dare he use my real name >:U
I was vulnerable because I saw him as my first real friend. That's why I trusted him with my name. But he trampled all over my trust >:/
The worst part is he tinted her memory by betraying her trust. They exchanged real names when he shared with her a BD of them sitting under a starry sky far away from Night City
When my Netrunner saw the stars, she dared to dream of being free... which got her into the current mess she's in... but at least for once in her life she found the courage to go against Arasaka/dad. That BD was a precious memory for her
But my friend/Rockerboy just ruined everything by doing the one thing my Netrunner told him never to do 😠. Now she can't think of that day without feeling betrayed 😠

outlining "Tapeworm" - which once upon a time was supposed to be a short fix-it fic - is hard and thirsty work (in both senses, hehe) so here are some spoilery memes to help me get this shit out of my system and also i really need a break (special shoutout to ChatGPT for explaining English to me like i'm five)
also yes if you can't tell i'm slightly going wild over the Black Dog story in Cyberpunk Red (how dare it derail my perfectly headcanonized plot!) because it's good stuff and i need to cram it's plot points into "Tapeworm" or else imma lose my mind

hey if you like ttrpgs here's some ttrpgs you should try out, especially if you've only played dnd -cyberpunk red: tense af action and a great setting -masks: teen titans simulator, playing as a young superhero team can lead to a lot of fun drama and action. if u dont like powered by the apocalypse i still recommend this one -lancer: tactical mech combat with lots of flexibility. you can also jockey a mech like in titanfall so automatically a win -city of mist: cool af neo-noir mystery ttrpg. Has one of the most flexible character creation systems i've ever seen with an even more flexible setting for your detective needs. -monsterhearts 2: Teen drama with monster people. I don't even have to explain this one it's just like riverdale but good -triangle agency: this isnt out yet but it's inspired by scp and x-files and you get to capture anomalies it's automatically cool. Look at the playtest books they're so fucking well made. there's more tabletop stuff out there but this is the stuff i have experience with or have read thoroughly. have fun becoming addicted to new systems.

drowning myself in world building minutiae for a tabletop campaign is justified actually because my players are also worldbuilding nerds . i dont have a problem. im fine. writing 1,000 words about the soviet space program for a cyberpunk campaign set in london and Very Much On Earth is fine actually.

I love how PM keeps playing with tropes. We've seen the tropes that they deconstruct within Limbus (in fact, it is a theory of mine that each Sinner is based on a stereotypical character from gachas), the way that they pick up the cyberpunk trope and basically throw it across the room, but another huge one is...
Carmen.
Look. I think that Carmen was and is based on the traditional 'Mary Sue'. Because...well, some traits that are said to belong to the 'Mary Sue', are turned brilliantly on their head by PM. So, for typical 'Mary Sue' traits, there's:
Pretty in the traditional sense. 'Mary Sues' always look perfect, peerless and never have to work hard to maintain their image. While, as far as I know, there hasn't really been made an in-universe compliment on Carmen's physical appearance...you'd rather stop and listen to someone who at least looks like they can be trusted wouldn't you? She's likened to the sun, as Oswald called her that, and is inside the light. (Also, out-of-universe: she is certainly pretty in my eyes. She adheres to the modern beauty standards at the very least).
Related to the above: charming. The 'Mary Sue' often has an innate charm that attracts others to her. The way that Carmen has this is through her voice, which already was powerful enough to let her traverse the dangerous Backstreets unarmed, standing out from all those other Backstreets preachers somehow and draw in the most cynical noblemen, but is even more charming after death. She doesn't even need to give a breaking speech or anything, as we've seen, she just gives you questions and comments on things. Which falls in line with...
Powerful, yet without having to break a sweat. Even before dying, she was already drawing in people without having to get physical (at least, none we know of). The only time we fight her as of yet (Kether realisation), Angela needs to use an attack that depletes all her HP to win, after five phases have already passed.
The 'Mary Sue' is often a so-called spotlight stealer. She will have a major role in the story, inexplicably, at least one other character will fall in love with her and she will overall have a large presence. So far, Carmen is the only character who has appeared in all three of the games, and if you count the Distortion and the Library, she has influenced WonderLab, Leviathan and Distortion Detective as well. She was also relevantly connected to the main cast of LobCorp and has influenced most of them in some way (i.e Ayin, Angela, Giovanni, arguably Kali, etc.). She remains to be relevant to several major story turns and has left her mark in them, in some way.
Unusual eyes. It's a stereotype that 'Mary Sues' always have unusual eyes. A common type is heterochromia (which is why I often jokingly call Hong Lu a 'Mary Sue'), but other types exist like sparkly rainbow or them changing like a mood ring or something. Carmen has red eyes, which are a common side-effect of body enhancements (Vergilius had them and the R Corp pack leaders too)...except, as we said, for as far as we know, Carmen hasn't had any. They are also a trait of Bloodfiends, but she isn't (yet) confirmed to be one. Either way, red eyes are a sign of the not-weak in the City.
Oftentimes, 'Mary Sues' are referred to as divinity, as pure grace from an utmost high all-powerful deity. They may or may not even be that deity. With Carmen, she practically had a cult of personality around her when she was alive...and she also had an analogue in another pale-skinned, red-eyed being that is also treated like this. She was described as this paeon of altruism and someone who genuinely wants the best for humanity.
Meaningful name. While not so immediately on-the-nose like 'Flowersparkle', Carmen's name can be seen as a reference to the infamous prototype of the femme fatale, once again hinting at that charming quality of hers.
Perfect. A 'Mary Sue' never fails at what she does...and that's where PM shows through that...
...Carmen is a parody on the 'Mary Sue'. A so-called 'Parody Sue'...but not played for laughs. The thing is that she is described as being all this...by those she already has enthralled. Those that aren't really involved with her - Hokma (was more loyal to Ayin), Binah (who wasn't in the picture during Carmen's life), and Roland (a stranger to LobCorp to begin with) have their say during Ruina and offer us another view at Carmen, our first, and one thing becomes clear:
A real 'Mary Sue' would be weird as fuck.
Carmen shows us how weird a 'Mary Sue' would actually be in a world that isn't sunshine and rainbows - an extremely uncanny, severely misguided being who nonetheless draws people to herself, who show a creepy amount of belief and devotion to her. Carmen thinks that the 'be yourself' message - so omnipresent in media - should prevail...in a world where the majority of people are either pieces of shit or are living such a dreary, miserable life that they just give up all hope.
But all of this is only revealed in the second game and pulls the player out of the dream. And so, Carmen does end up failing to convince some people like Dongbaek and Dongrang who manage to develop E.G.O instead.
Because despite what she was painted as in the past, in reality, Carmen is not a 'Mary Sue'. And she is not perfect.
That's why she's such a great PM character.

Help me name my anti-capitalist space TTRPG!
I am in the process of developing a splat book of sorts for Cyberpunk Red and could use some help deciding on a name! Check out the game description and vote below.
[UNTITLED SPACE GAME] will explore the absurdist end-game of the billionaire space race to colonize Mars. Combining inspiration from genres such as cosmic horror, sci-fi, and capitalist dystopia, [UNTITLED SPACE GAME] is as much of a work of speculative fiction as it is a TTRPG. Players will find themselves as the newest recruits in the Interplanetary Resistance – an alliance of humans, aliens, and androids hell-bent on toppling the billionaire superpowers that have turned Mars into their own personal playground. This group of scientists, machine workers, and android liberationists will serve as your guides and allies as you acclimate to the Red Planet. While any good resistance movement has to get comfortable with bloodshed, players can also expect to navigate covert operations and diplomatic relations with the various people that call Mars home.
Please reblog after voting!!
One note: [UNTITLED SPACE GAME] is currently under development, with a test game planned for Summer 2024. This test game is closed to new players at this time.

genre: body horror, biopunk, cyberpunk
member: just john lol sorry
warnings: coarse language (or not, I don’t really remember), blood, gore, self-mutilation (not mental health or self-harm related, it’s just a gory sci-fi plot point), barely proofread but I think it’s passable.
note: a spooky little piece i decided to do as i’m making massive changes to my ‘fight or flight’ series… partial spoilers but i don’t expect to be finishing the first fic any time soon, and i feel like it’s not for the tumblr demographic anyways LOL (ao3 here i come). sort of bloody and gory stuff ahead, you have been warned.
*****
MIDNIGHT IN THE WEST LANES OF THE QUARRY, wrapped tightly in the arms of sin and vice: Johnny had found himself in a gnarly predicament.
He slid to the ground spewing profanities, his backside meeting the metal of the door mere seconds after it had slammed shut. The entire thing shook beneath his weight, protesting further when he threw his head back against it. Blunt force hammering into his skull, pain burying deep into his head and racing down his spine like a current—just a precursor for a long, long night.
He did it again, to be sure, pitching backward until he heard a sickening thump. It hurt less now. Good. Then he brought the tin can back up to his lips and finished the rest of his drink, grimacing when he felt grains of sand on his tongue. Peering into the bottom of the now-empty can, he found jagged edges of metal soaked in a discoloured foam. A suspicious crimson stain sat at the bottom, as if the bartender—last seen suffering from the dryness of the Lanes and a badly-split lip—had spat in Johnny’s cup before filling it with lukewarm beer.
No matter, he thought, mustering a condescending sneer. They were no strangers to disease and illness on the streets of the Quarry, and he had a multitude of other issues to worry about: beginning with a group of men somewhere on the other side of the door, all hellbent on tearing him from limb to limb. Leraje had made good promise of carving his face into a gargoyle, if he ever got his hands on him.
Suppose Johnny would just have to do it himself, first.
His reflection awaited him in the bathroom mirror, rough and fatigued, somewhat of a hazy memory. Not quite him. Not perfect, hardly recognizable to most. A softer jawline and heart-shaped face that certainly made him feel foreign in his own body. His eyes were a little meaner than he remembered, bright red and angular like a pair of garnets. His lips were drawn back in a sharp scowl, not entirely to his liking. But it was effective enough around these parts, able to fit him perfectly into the crowd of lowlife party-goers and spiteful drunks.
Working quickly, he slipped out of his jacket and tossed it onto the counter. His shirt followed, pulled over his head in one smooth motion and discarded haphazardly. He debated, for just a second, whether it would be necessary to carve the ink out of his shoulder. For as long as he’d been in hiding, it was the one part of him left recognizable, never altered, never defaced.
“Short, scrawny, black-haired, blue-eyed. Bird tattoo on his arm.”
“Tall-ish, muscular. Black hair. Swallow tattooed on his left shoulder.”
For someone they wanted to kill so badly, they could never paint the right picture.
“He’s got a cute little birdie on his shoulder,” Jungwoo had once said—directly to Johnny’s face, completely unaware that his bounty was right in front of him. “Seen anyone like that recently?”
“No,” Johnny had responded with a snide curl of his lip. He’d tossed a handful of change onto the counter without regard, all whilst holding a blade to the neck of a man hidden below him. It was the small, wiry bartender he’d robbed just moments prior, whose clothes and identity he’d assumed when Jungwoo’s goons backed him into a corner. “Now get the fuck out of my bar.”
The Assembly had been hunting him for sport, like the uber rich topsiders hunted game in the summertime. Johnny had eluded them at every turn only by the skin of his teeth.
By his skin, flesh and bones, by the breaking and tearing of his own body to conform to whatever illusions necessary.
He studied his face for a few moments before taking the knife from his pocket: a handy contraption he’d built himself, with dual blades that could be deployed with the click of a button. Click, like a mechanical pencil. A thin sliver of metal emerged from his hand, gleaming, thrilled to see light again, already on its way to mark the canvas like it had a mind of its own.
It was quick enough. Two symmetrical slashes, one down each side of the face, from the undereye to the hollows of his cheekbone. Deep, painful, nicking something solid on the second stroke. The ink were a deep, glistening red colour, streaking down to his collarbone.
No sooner than he’d begun to bleed, the loose ends of his skin began to knit together. Cells into fibres into tissue into muscle—spiralling into place, regenerating, remodelling. And when they’d smoothed over into patches of new skin, there was a sharpness to his face that hadn’t been there prior.
Though not quite enough.
Again, the knife came. This time below the first cuts, deeper. Harder. Hitting bone purposefully. He hissed as a white-hot sear burst on his vision, lurching forward to clutch at the edge of the counter—before he flipped the blade around his hand and went for more. The thin scalpel now replaced by a thick blade, he drew. An artist hard at work, immersed in their vision, simply could not be stopped. A splatter of red met the floor.
He stopped only to observe. To critique. It looked too much like a past persona: the eyes too small, the mouth too low, the expression still far too cynical, like the bartender facade he’d used to fool Jungwoo. So he relaxed his brow, contorted his features to where he wanted them to be, used his fingers and a smidge of his own blood to mark where he would cut. This was detailed work, after all. He didn’t have time to measure precisely, surely, but he wasn’t a heathen.
Thud. A violent sound behind him; the door shuddered on its hinges, causing Johnny to momentarily lose control of the blade. He felt it cut deep into the corner of his eye and sever a half dozen vessels. Yet there was no fear—it wouldn’t have been the first time he gouged his own eye out, if he was a few millimetres off. There was only a certain irritation at the disruption.
“Someone in there?” a familiar voice called from outside. It was loud and booming, robotic in some strange way, almost as if it’d been fed to a machine first. But above all, it was taunting. “You’ve been in there a long time, friend… Do you need any help? The drink wasn’t too… strong, was it?”
Damn Kim Jungwoo and his timing. Clenching his jaw, Johnny ran the tap and splashed water onto his face. His blood splattered across the sink like crimson watercolour being flung across a canvas. With drenched hands, he slicked his hair back and redressed, then picked up his empty can.
He considered himself an artist in many regards. He had an aptitude for lies and trickery unlike any other. He had lived the lives of upwards of a hundred characters—all hand-drawn, hand-sculpted with the finest material, created with intention and nuance and all, never hollow or useless. The flesh and bone were only the first movement; performance was the second, even if it humiliated him to his core. Johnny believed himself to be an actor suited for centre stage and spotlight, but seldom could he claim his rightful place. Not now. Not yet.
When he flung the bathroom door open a few moments later, he emerged drunk and deranged, tipping over and grabbing onto the first person he saw. A symphony of distasteful club music and voices roared for his entrance, and he thundered above it, spitting and sputtering like an animal.
Within seconds, Jungwoo had flung him aside. They were here for the man with the bird tattoo, not this fool. So Johnny tripped past several party-goers and tumbled to the ground, yet never letting go of his tin can. Then he sat amidst stomping feet and the smell of sweat, feeling the symphony vibrate his bones, laughing until he choked. Part of it was for show; the Assembly wouldn’t bother with someone who looked like him. Part of it was to revel in his victory. In the victories to come.
For one day, he would cast aside all the characters and performances, then rise above them.

Also annoyed on a meta level because my friend hard-core ships her Rockerboy with my Netrunner
BUT EVERYTHING HER ROCKERBOY DOES MAKES MY NETRUNNER WANT TO DO THE OPPOSITE OF DATING HIM >:U
Anyway! Even if he was husband material (he is not. He is kinda toxic. My Netrunner is toxic too, but at least she's not as self destructive) I already told my friend I will not let them be together
Rockerboy deserves better...
I'm not over how I let our DM indoctrinate me into Arasaka when we first started cos I knew nothing about the lore...
As my Netrunner, I did so many bad things as a double agent for our DM/Arasaka...
Maybe Rockerboy can forgive someone who indirectly got his friends killed, let her brother torture him in front of a mirror, and destroyed evidence his friend died to collect...
Maybe he's really that blinded by love...
But I cannot forgive myself 😭. And my Netrunner cannot forgive herself too 😭
Actually... I admit my Netrunner is just as toxic as him... As my Netrunner, I almost used him as a ticket out of Night City because I knew he was still in love...
But the timing was bad. His friend (a NPC) just got killed. So when my Netrunner approached him and said she's ready to leave with him, he said he couldn't leave yet but will arrange for a contact of his to get her out first
^ my Netrunner saw this as him breaking his promise. He was the one who asked her to leave with him but wtf now he doesn't want to leave >:T
(I know. My Netrunner is the "mature" and "smart" one in the group, but she actually can be very selfish and bratty cos of her upbringing)
(As my Netrunner I went me me me me and spun this into him being the bad guy for hurting my feelings)
So my Netrunner is trying to hurt him back by stubbornly staying in Night City now
And Rockerboy isn't any better because he realised she's trying to hurt him, so he retaliated by becoming more self destructive and disruptive because he knows she hates that
It's gotten so bad that before my Netrunner's brother got killed by MaxTac (he actually killed by Exec, but that's meta knowledge my Netrunner does not know >:T) she moved into Exec's apartment
Rockerboy and my Netrunner were roommates since like forever. But they weren't on talking term when Rockerboy ran into the building after her when she was trying to stop her brother's psychosis induced rampage

just a small bunch of Alek because he is the babiest of girls 😔
think it's about time i explained who tf he is and why i'm always sad about him so here are a few fun facts about the boi!:
saw his parents get brutaly unalived by Arasaka aged 16 and had to delta the fuck outta there with a toddler sister in his arms
got stranded in the desert outside Night City with nothing to his name but dad's old jacket, enough eddies to buy like one burger and a hungry child to care for
came across some Nomads (the Bakkers) and for a year or two Selita Bakker took the babes under her wing (then she fucken died and he had to leave again)
was forced into a life of crime just to make sure his sis didn't starve
he'd disappear for days or weeks doing gig after gig while Jaxine stayed with Mama Welles, Padre, Dr. Vik or Mama Fabienne (a kind-hearted haitian proprietress of The Birdhouse, an orphanage set up in the ruins of a small theatre tucked away somewhere between Dogtown and GIM) more about her sometime later
because of that Jax basically raised herself and Alek forever hated himself for not being there for her when she needed him most
he called her Jacket all the time and only used her name when she done fucked up and needed an ass woopin' (she was a hooligan who'd get locked up on possession charges aged 14...)
the nickname came from the fact that after they became orphans Jax would only ever shut up and stop crying while swaddled into her dad's giant jacket; she'd even wobble around like a penguin wearing it like a giant ass cape. and so it stuck. Jacket (sometimes it was JJ when Alek was in a hurry)
back in the world of edgerunning he was known as Vulture or V for short. his selling pitch was "got a bone to pick with somebody? Vulture's your man!"
as a side job he also ran an indie rock group "The Vultures". music helped him cope with day-to-day traumatic shit he had to endure. it's through the showbiz that he met Kerry Eurodyne and developed a hopeless crush on the celeb. feelings were mutual AF but both gonks were too shy to say anything. Kerry would only find out about it some years later from his sis when she became a walking floppy disk for Johnny_Silverhand.exe
at some point he utterly peaked in the merc world. every dog at the Afterlife knew his face and everybody wanted to work with him. even Rogue at some point advertised him to her clients as "the" man to do the job
at the pinnacle of his career Alek chipped in some mean mantis blades, top of the line Kiroshis, a Militech-made Sandevistan and a gazillion more enhancements that made him a fucken beast to be reckoned with. he also trained relentlessly and folks even mistook him for an ex-military, even though everything he knew was self-taught. he never stopped improving his body and mind and because of this (or maybe inspite of this?) he started showing the first symptoms of cyberpsychosis sometime around 2070. despite that, he'd keep his illness under control up until his death in 2074
it was also around this time that he klepped a pristine Type-66 Avenger off some corpo rat. he took the beaut to the Nomads to have it juiced up and after some work the wheels came out black as midnight, equipped with CrystalDome tech, guns upon guns, meanest freaking engine and tyres that could cling to walls if need be. don't ask how many people died staring down that bumper approaching them head-on at supersonic speeds, cause the answer is too many. Jax always felt like he loved that damned car more than her sometimes... and whenever she asked to take the beastie for a spin he'd always reply "over my dead body". who knew fucker meant it literally?!
Alek lied to Jaxine her whole life in a desperate bid to protect her from literally the entire world. the story of how they became orphans, what he did as a job, where he went off to for days on end... girl grew up knowing nothing about real Alek. only years later when with the help of a mutual friend she discovers his secret pad in the Glen that she'd start to piece together who he really was
Alek was afraid of his illness taking away his memory, so he scrolled damn near everything. birthday parties, hangouts at the shooting range, hikes into the badlands... every more or less important moment with Jaxie got recorded onto a BD shard and tucked away like a precious little slice of life that he was losing alongside his self-destructing neural links. later, Jaxie would spend hours rolling them over and over again, reliving the life that Arasaka took from them
throughout his career Alek's sole purpose in life (besides keeping his lil' sis alive) was revenge on Arasaka. specifically, he wanted to end Saburo himself with his own hands. any gig that involved messing with 'Saka or allowed him to gather crucial info was an automatic green light for him
he knew his dad didn't die in the assault and suspected he was Soulkilled like many other enemies of the corp (old man did in fact manage a anti-corpo group of vigilantes for like a decade before getting ratted out by somebody). at some point while on a gig to steal some 'Saka intel he got a hold of his dad's engram's copy. not like the Relic which would delete your personality, but the old gen - one that you plug in and talk to like your average hologram. of course, Alek never told Jax that he had their dead father on a shard slotted into his head at all times... and old man Bryce didn't want to traumatize his junior kid even further, either
dad wholeheartedly supported his son's mission to topple Arasaka, which was probably a bad idea... because history tends to repeat itself and eventually 'Saka discovered Alek's true identity and connected numerous crimes against them back to him. Adam Smasher was on his way to smash Alek...
too late did Alek realize that he done fucked up. he got all the crucial info locked away in his pad, the keys from it he left in his wheels and send that mf off into the sunset with a trusted fella. he recorded a sordid confession for Jaxie with a shitton of i'm-sorry's and i-love-you's and sent her away by... lying, again. he told her some drug dealers where coming to collect their due and he wanted her out of danger while he dealt with them. but the metal man Smasher showed up and the epic fight ensued. Alek knew he had no chance but he wasn't gonna make it easy for the dickwipe that zeroed his fam. the least he could do is hurt the bitch. and so as Jaxie was speeding away on Alek's bike - explosion. both Alek and his digitized dad were gone for good. Jaxie was left to fend for herself, not knowing that 'Saka now knew that they didn't wipe all of the Bryces and were looking for the one that got away
eventually she'd learn the whole tragic ass truth. and despite Alek's last wish for Jaxine to leave 'Saka be and just live her life, she made it her life goal to avenge her family. somehow, someway. one Johnny Silverhand would later come in extremely handy in this quest of hers
even though his life was hard and short, he did try to live to the fullest. he put his heart and soul into his music, he tried his damned best to show Jaxine that he loved her, and he looked out for his friends. Rogue would describe him as "the good villain" - a guy who despite having bloodied hands that never dried, always tried to do well by others. there was a short time when he was considered the deadliest motherfucker in town the mention of whose name sent shivers down gangoons' spines. and then he, like many before him and after, died
so if ya wanna honor the legendary Vulture whose flight was cut short, come down to the Afterlife and ask Claire for a shot of The Vulture: Armagnac Massy on the rocks with a splash of Cirrus Cola and a mint garnish. expensive, you say? if you knew him, you'd know he was worth every ennie

🌐 seya : before we dive into an amazing world of web-aesthetics, there are few things that i’d like to point out. first of all, i chose aesthetic for each member based solely on my associations with their vibe. meaning: i associate the vibe of aesthetic with them, rather than the history behind it. secondly, some of the information was gathered from such sites as:

now that we got that out of the way — enjoy!

diner kitsch – aesthetic familiar to everyone, yet not that many people know it’s actual name (or that it is, in fact, an aesthetic!). checkered floors and walls, milkshakes, burgers, neon signs and, of course, waitresses on roller skates — these things define diner kitsch. originating from 1950s, when diners were seen as a place, where you could enjoy a hearty comfort food and have a good time with your family or friends it was finally revived in our years through media that depicts mainly high schoolers or travelers of any sorts, going out for a dinner.
🌐 seya : i chose diner kitsch for gunil because he is literally the embodiment of a nerdy boy who would definetely hang out with his group of friends in a place like that. doing homework, reading comics, getting cookies on the house because of how often they visit a diner… 🥤🍔 yum!

“the term neon-noir is a film genre, but it can also represent an aesthetic. this aesthetic includes a brooding, mysterious, cyberpunk, and dangerous atmosphere. the neon-noir aesthetic can be related somewhat to the sibling-genre neo-noir (without the “n”), including avant-garde fashion, femme fatale style, dark clothing, technology, and neon lights.” — ©️ wendy zhou (from her blog wendyzhou.se)
neon-noir (also known as future-, cyber-, tech-noir) was born in the film industry around 1980s, when sci-fi was blooming yet again. not so popular in web, it is still quite known in gamer community, thanks to such games like “cyberpunk 2077”, “anno mutationem”, “blade runner” etc. this aesthetic is mixing old-school noir with futuristic elements, giving it a whole new look. neon signs, robots, androids, futuristic technology are going hand in hand with good old detective genre, accented shadows, rain and fog.
🌐 seya : i find this aesthetic to be the most suiting to jungsu. i can imagine him in this type of setting so well and i’d actually like to read or even write something, where he is portrayed as a detective in a mysterious and futuristic setting!

“rule-bending, medium-blending "instagram grunge". full of horror vacui, chrome type, oddball textures and self-referentialism.” — ©️ cari institute.
originated in the 1990s and revived in 2010s, acidgrafix (also known as: acid graphics and acid design) aesthetic is mainly seen nowadays on the covers of music albums. bright colors (usually red, orange and neon green, neon yellow, neon purple), wireframes, distorted images, liquid metal forms – all of these are key elements of acidgrafix. the term acid, as you might’ve already guessed, came from the acid house and rave culture. it first appeared on flyers, used to promote and to invite people to raves. smiley faces (of course, resembling nothing else but the actual drug), op-art-esque patterns, sci-fi futurism – all of these were such an eye candy for party-goers, that soon enough this style overtook the music industry. after being long forgotten in the 00s, acidgrafix finally found it’s new home in instagram, where musicians would design their insta-stories and albums with all of the key details of this aesthetic.
🌐 seya : aaand this is the part that i was worried about the most. this aesthetic took it’s origins not from the best culture, but i still find it’s style being quite suiting for gaon. it’s bright, innovative and bold – just like he is!

"the millennial and gen-z iteration of edgy grunge aesthetics, associated closely with "pop punk" and the store hot topic." — ©️ cari institute.
*puts a cd in the drive, "girlfriend" by avril lavigne starts playing* now that we're in the mood, let us find out what the hell is a teen punk. the dirty, the angry, the free and THE wild – this aesthetic conveys the whole essence of the rebellious period that every teenager eventually goes through. you can usually see this movement being expressed through clothes, style, make up and, most importantly, music, rather then the way you could draw something or edit a photo. mainly seem in early 00s, teen punk found it's new home in hearts of people through nostalgia that overtook us all as soon as pandemic started. this aesthetic combines different colors like foggy green and blue, obviously black, red and pink (yes, the tricolor of emo aesthetic is very important here). essential details of teen punk are denim jackets, torn jeans, big ass t-shirts with logos of musical groups, fishnets and those humongous military boots that everyone used to wear. the pioneers of this movement are mainly musical artists, like the infamous avril lavigne, all-time favorites my chemical romance, green day, paramore etc.
🌐 seya : now i need you to look me dead in the eyes and say that THIS isn't his aesthetic. bro literally dresses as if hot topic was more grunge and still managed to survive.

"first wave of corporate appropriation of graffiti culture. typically includes urban streetscapes & iconography contemporary to the time period (eg. trash cans, brick walls, chain link fencing, street lamps, sidewalks, industrial elements, general 'urban decay'). it's also associated with that eras' portrayal of street, hip hop, & punk culture." — ©️ cari institute.
disclaimer: this part is mostly retelling of an article from this site: https://www.grafftergallery.com/2023/08/graffiti-pop-art-vivid-intersection-of.html | i really don't think that i would be able to express myself better than they already did, so let me give the credit to the rightful authors!
this aesthetic is a firm proof of the dynamic between street culture and the world of art that was born in early 80s and was especially popular till the 00s. bright colors, bold splashes of different patterns, provocative slogans, popular singers, models, tv personalities – it screams fight for the freedom of self expression. this movement is first and foremost was heavily affected by socio-political issues, causing street artists to voice their concerns through art. graffiti itself is a rebellious act (you're literally damaging private property) and when you mix this with media icons and pop culture that was thriving, you're guaranteed to have all the attention that you need.
🌐 seya : i feel like this aesthetic really suits jun han because in my eyes he is one of the most brave idols in terms of expressing himself through his style and art.

"let's take a look at what is included in such aesthetics as retro-surrealism (also known as airbrush surrealism and included in the subgenres of retro-futurism), shall we?"
retro is an imitation or conscious derivative of a lifestyle, trend, or art form from history, included in music, fashion, or looks. the retro art movement always invariably revives and in one way or another refers to everything that happened in the past. surrealism is an art direction that always strives to revolutionize human experience. it balances a rational vision of life with one that asserts the power of the unconscious and dreams. combining these two trends of media art, we get abstract paintings made in the style of sci-fi comics from the 70s-90s. very often they feature elements such as musical instruments, outer space and electronic objects such as telephones, radios, televisions, etc. usually such paintings are airbrushed, which gives them a slightly hazy, matte effect, typical for surrealism (promotes immersion into the unconscious me thinks!).
🌐 seya : i love, love, LOVE this one so much, i just had to give it to my favorite boy jooyeon! i feel like this one suits jooyeon just because he looks like that one dude obsessed with weird ass comic books, always going around with his old mp3 player and vibing to daft punk bangers. sorry not sorry, no one is getting this image out of my head.

FFXIV JP Fanfest 2024/7.0 Spoilers ahead!
So from the images we’ve seen of it, I’ve been feeling increasingly confident that this new future city people are the people, or at least one of the peoples, who fell to the 2nd Umbral Calamity.
Looking at the city/cities themselves, they clearly don’t match architecturally to the civilizations that we’ve seen so far in game, looking more high-fantasy sci-fi than much of the Ancient’s vaguely deco diesel-punk stylings and very distinct to the red with blues and greens of Allag. Their cities have this kind of purple glow over chrome metal with this sleek, cyberpunk esque styling to everything than what you might see with Allag’s turning rings and jagged edges, which feels too distinct to be the same nation to me, at least from the same era. It definitely feels out of left field aesthetic wise for the game, even when compared to some of the technology we’ve seen from other sci-fi heavy civilizations.
Now, this could just mean new civilization from basically anywhere. However, Yoshi-P mentioned that these places are lightning attuned, which explains the purple, but also possibly links it to the 2nd Calamity, the one of lightning. Now, we know next to nothing of this era, but one thing we do know, or at least think we know of this time, is that the people escaped a long-lasting hail of lightning strikes that ended their civilizations via building underground shelters to wait out the storm. Looking again at the two areas connected to this new civilization, they both seem to have these big shieldings covering the tops of these cities, with both the new raid, the Arcadion, and more prominently with the city shown in the distance of the Heritage Found artwork clearly having a shield at the top covering the city. We don’t get a super clear view of the sky with Solution 9, largely because of how all-encompassing the skyscrapers and block towers are here, but the fact that the lighting here is seemingly mostly from spotlights, billboards, etc., I do feel confident that something at least is blocking natural light here. (On a side note, Heritage Found’s city is definitively underground.)
All this to say is that I think we’re going to be meeting something relating to the 2nd Calamity here, whether that be the remnants of the people, a lasting civilization, or just the lingering stuff like robots or something in Dawntrail. If they are the people from this time, I do have some wild ideas as to their deal in the story. Maybe they’re bunkering up to avoid going to the surface for some reason? Maybe they’re the ones that carved the big divide between the North and South of Tural that Tuliyollal connects? Maybe they’re Garlean ancestors since they possibly have a third eye judging by that picture in the billboard of Solution 9 and we’ll learn why Garleans can’t use magicks possibly (assuming it isn’t just an unrelated forehead gem the lady in that billboard has)? I don’t really know. I guess we’ll have to find out these new people’s deal in Dawntrail.

Finally played through the Phantom Liberty thing for cyberpunk 2077 and "it was fine" is my review. It sort of continues the thing that the original game had of being weirdly out of date in political/thematic terms, you end up waiting for some sort of deconstruction/subversion when it starts with the "Escape from New York" plot but it never really comes.
At some point, playing things straight becomes an unexpected twist, and I admit that I psyched myself out when they started playing around with V's implant.
I could go write thousands of words about this, but I think "being out of date in political/thematic terms" actually worked to the original game's advantage.
Different people have different levels of political sophistication, and in particular young people haven't had as much time to develop that yet. There are also recurring patterns where people will reach their ceiling of political sophistication, which limits how politically-sophisticated general audience media can get.
To take three examples from the original game:
If you read the accompanying text, gang operations often don't get flagged for police bounties until someone fucks up the social context protecting them.
Corporate behavior is not monolithic, but driven by competing internal factions (and individuals).
The Mayor "lowers the crime rate" by reclassifying the most crime-prone district as not part of the city.
In some sense Cyberpunk 2077 is a cartoon; the aspects of disorder are enhanced in order to increase the contrast (and provide a violent video game), but this is actually pretty solid content.
Adapting an earlier property also allowed CD Projekt Red to foreground human interactions and concerns and push less relatable and more speculative techs (such as mind-uploading and AI evolution) into the background.
Also, as a game that wants to draw power from The Nineties...
Tumblr media
(Above: from Hark, A Vagrant #311)
Cyberpunk 2077 is incredibly, unapologetically masculine, and has no shame about being horny.
Oh sure, it's happy to present women as complex, agentic, competent, and so on. And it's happy to position a man abusing his power over women as a villain.
But 2014-era feminist lecture clickbait? It's just not there. Post-2022, the power of clickbait feminism is waning, so by adapting an earlier property that's not actually hostile to women and LGBT people, but also not hostile to men, CD Projekt Red could basically just skip that whole entire discourse plotline.
This is the right choice for a number of reasons, including that Guardian columnists don't buy video games.
Something about Cyberpunk 2077 feels like an opera of sorts.
The original Star Trek is full of wall-sized computers full of blinking lights and special effects that look like a couple of color filters cast over a spotlight on a wall. But people still love that show. They might make fun of the stryofoam rocks, but they find the show quaint and charming.
It's because it's not so current that I suspect that 20 years on, the robotic chainsaw arms become props for that opera, a story about revenge, corruption, and capital.
I suspect it will endure a lot longer than much of the 2014-2022 media. It may become the Raygun Gothic of our era.
Beyond 20 years, it's more difficult to say.
