I find it worrying that @staff won't let you add a custom domain to your blog if you don't purchase it directly from [tumblr] anymore (so you can't use one you already own). I understand the push for monetization (at the dizzying cost of usability) but, this is just a strange one coupled with the recent push to force users to no longer use username.tumblr.com and instead use tumblr.com/username (while also pushing for custom themes? that you can't have with the new url profile‽). Feel as though there are two different teams with vastly different goals leading them through this weird change. You can obviously do both, but not this way. I understand the new-ish owners of [tumblr] are also a $7.5B+ juggernaut of a company with many different directives, but it's just strange.

I can't believe tumblr changed custom domains so that you can only have one if you buy it through their service. I already own a fucking domain and I'm not going to buy a second one through tumblr just so that I can have my domain point to my blog while I'm rebuilding my fucking website. gotta thank tumblr staff for making features that have existed for years more cumbersome to access just so that they can make a buck

I'm so annoyed. I was going to make a new Tumblr blog for personal stuff and photography and I was planning on using an old domain I had sitting around but Tumblr said NOPE! If you want to use a custom domain, you have to buy one through us.

I mean I could just buy a new one and come up with a new name but I'm so annoyed that they did this, I don't want to give them my money lol. Thanks @staff for breaking something that didn't need fixing!

What site did you use to make your shop/blog?

i used squarespace but i´ve been meaning to switch because i hate how they changed things to be extremely confusing at the backend for the sake of "simplicity" (like calling the E-commerce menue "selling" and putting every tool in the "selling tools" menue

they also still only have a handful of useable ecommerce templates

#they also straight up have shit customer service #i had issues with my domain being blacklisted by security companies and all they did was send me in circles. i talked to one guy who did mo #e than just rattling off the websites help menue and he was allowed to help for one (1) email. like it´s not the fault of people working th #re to be clear it´s them not providing conditions that let their employees be helpful

not to be That Guy... ... but say you’re interested in using a blog here as a standalone web page, and you’d like to hide the ‘follow/like/reblog’ navigation bar in the upper right corner on your theme as well as that DELIGHTFUL ‘signup for tumblr’ popup that shows up and obscures most of the lower half of the screen every single time you load the page

i’m speaking metaphorically of course, who would even WANT do do something like that? after all, staff has intentionally removed the option to disable the ‘promote tumblr’ option on everybody’s themes, and we all know they only make changes to the way this site functions that people absolutely want!
