Tell us about the first fan fiction you wrote.
Oooh, I've got to go back nearly 20 years. High speed internet was still a relatively new thing, and I discovered online fandom. I'd been a Trekkie pretty much all of my life, but I had previously fangirled in solitude. I knew of fanzines and conventions, of course—dreamed of going to one someday when I had enough money (still do)—but aside from attending one in-person meeting, I'd never had anyone to squee with. Imagine just how exciting it was to find sites like Trekbbs and commiserate with other people who were as rabid as I had secretly been. Even more, as a young, stay-at-home mom, I suddenly had access to adult conversation that wasn't steeped in kids and parenting. It was a heady time.
When Star Trek: Enterprise aired its second episode of the fourth season, "Home," I fell headlong into the ship of these two idiots:
Tumblr media
That episode broke me. I tiptoed into the Trip/T'Pol thread in the ENT forum, hoping to find that I wasn't the only one dying over what was happening between these two star-crossed lovers, and I discovered a whole new side of fandom: fanfiction! Back then, stories were generally archived on privately owned sites. Technically FFN existed, but no one in the TnT fandom used it. Our go-to site was the TripT'Polers corner of the House of Tucker. I devoured the stories. It was like reading Trek novels but catered specifically to my favorite pairing.
The site held challenges based on spoilers for upcoming episodes of ENT, and with encouragement from fellow fans, I decided to write a oneshot for the "Bound" challenge: The Beginning of Hope. A masterpiece it is not—nowhere close! But while the prose leaves something to be desired, that one story has led to over a hundred more in various fandoms. It's led to friendships that have lasted nearly two decades. It led me to a beta reader turned beloved best friend who has been integral to the writer I am today.
Thank you so much for asking! This was a fun trip down memory lane. ❤️

not you liking and defending dabi a literal criminal and mass murderer, who actively tries to kill his innocent younger brother and still simultaneously are shitting on endeavor. like newsflash both suck ass but atleast endeavor has the heart to change and realize his mistakes and is contantly trying to pay for the pain he caused without looking for forgiveness. what does dabi do on the other hand? except for just smelling like a burnt chicken nugget
Don't be shy, come off anon <3
People are allowed to like and dislike characters regardless of what they've done, you know that right? Also I've never defended Dabi in a way that implies I agree with his decisions, which I apply to Endeavor as well. I love both of them actually, as characters. I love to hate Endeavor, he's a piece of shit but I like how he was written. Same with Dabi, he's done horrible shit but I fucking love his character.
Besides, Endeavor finally realizing his mistakes after multiple decades doesn't erase the trauma he caused or how much of an asshole he has been and still is. And someone like Dabi is too far gone to care about anything that isn't on his one-track mind.
It's called literary comprehension, fully understanding the media you're in and recognizing the characters and content you're consuming ✨ I love all kinds of characters while also hating all kinds of characters. Most of the time, I can recognize when they're well written (despite how much they piss me off) and still hate them, as a person.
You don't have to like certain characters, that's your decision. I don't like quite a few characters that people love, because they're not my type of character. But I can recognize why they would.

When you write and read stuff do you maybe have like a different preference for the both of them sometimes? Like for example one might like reading romance but can't write or will not write it. 👀 (Ask game)
Ohh definitely. I’m very picky when it comes to writing fanfics, but I can handle more tropes/ characters as a reader.
For instance, in my rules, I said that I don’t write Character/ Reader death, angst w/o comfort, or unrequited love. But if you look at my reblogs, you’ll notice that I’m willing to read fics with those tropes. Depending on the writer or my ideas, I can also make exceptions.
Also, while I can handle nsfw, I can’t write fully-fleshed smut scenes. That is why my Harbinger fics only show a few details + what happens before and after the smut.

Curious anon here: When did you start writing (fic or non-fic)? And for fic, do you prefer writing AUs or canon universe? Because you’re amazing at both 😍
Thank you so much, curious and kind anon!! 🥰
I don't remember when I started writing, but every memory I have, I have a notebook and a pen with me. I was always writing stories. Now I have a phone that makes it even faster and easier! Love it.
My first fanfiction was a self insert OC and I don't remember if it was a Black Stallion rip off or a Romeo + Juliet rip off. I was 13. I wrote both that year. It was a lot of fun. I was a horse girl who loved Shakespeare. I had an old set of the Black Stallion books that I read so many times they were falling apart. I can't find them anymore and it makes me really sad TBH.
And I had a huge crush on baby Leo. He was too old for me then, and yet somehow I am too old for him now, even though he is still over a decade older than me!
Then in my twenties I was getting divorced and I read Harry Potter for the first time and I went through a huge fandom period there, live journal fanfiction saved me from the deepest depression and toughest time. My OTP was Remus/Sirius aka Wolfstar.
And now ... I write original stuff sometimes, write online content for industrial brands for work, and thought I would never write fan fiction again. But then I saw somebody on Reddit say "God bless the Haladriels, there are some really cute stories on AO3."
That was 5 months ago and I have written over 100,000 words since then?!?! About goddamn Galadriel and Sauron?!?
AU feels a lot easier and more natural and overall fun to write. But I think I take more satisfaction as a writer when I get the phrasing to cooperate and the details to ring true in a canon universe? Also, the stakes feel higher because it's not about two humans it's these power players in a cosmic level story!

What's your most deranged bit of headcanon for any fandom?
So I tend to have a general deranged headcanon for all my fandoms: it's not always terrible for the "bad" side to win. Because it's fictional, and I absolutely love exploring that idea.
My favorite stories for Trek are in the Mirror Universe where nobody is good and right and true (by virtue of their hellish existence), but their stories are still compelling.
For Labyrinth, MCU, Shadow & Bone, and Rings of Power, I ship villain/hero. And gosh, I am rabid for the bad guy coming out on top. Not to mention the inherit power imbalance. Jareth is some kind of ambiguous magical immortal (though strongly implied Fae) and Sarah is human. Loki is a demi-god and master sorcerer who has been alive for roughly 1700 years; Jane Foster is human. Alina might be the Sun Summoner, but Aleksander has had centuries to perfect his shadow powers and political machinations. Yes, Galadriel is an elf thousands of years old, but Halbrand/Sauron is a Maia who helped sing the very world into existence, who helped create the beings who now live and breathe there.
It's kind of like Japanese-style horror versus Western-style horror. Western horror is like, "Yeah maybe not everyone survives this, but our main character will somehow vanquish the evil supernatural thing." Japanese horror is like, "Why in the world would any average human be able to defeat a supernatural being? No, evil wins."
I love that in fanfic we get to deep dive into the idea that the underdog does not win, that the big bad gets what they want. It's not merely the "all is lost" moment of the story before the hero finds a way to defeat the evil; it's literally the finale—the end. Evil triumphs. Mainstream fiction could never.
(And as a final aside for my other fandom, OUAT, as much as I adore a reformed and fully redeemed Captain Hook, I have a very special obsession with season 2 "vengeance-at-all-costs is my only guiding star" Hook and season 5 "dark one" Hook. But that fandom doesn't really have a space for that kind of "darkness wins" storytelling, and I'm okay with that!)
Thank you so much!
