How To Get Your Character Models Out Of A Game: Tips And Tricks For Bitches That Have Never Used Blender

(it's me, i'm bitches)
(also ignore how messy that lighting is it's 1am and i should have been asleep hours ago. he's there for proof of concept 💕)
a couple people (specifically @forsaken-constellation and @ratasum) asked for a tutorial on how to rip models out of the game. this is not that, but it is a compilation of resources i used to learn about ripping, blender, and 3d modeling in general. i desperately wanted a post like this to exist when i was trying to figure this out, so here we go! all the resources below are completely free, with the exception of a link to the patreon of the person that created ninjaripper.
disclaimers:
there are probably more efficient ways to do the things i am doing. i watched a tutorial to learn shortcuts and then skipped to character models. if you have tips to add, corrections to make, or other thoughts, please feel free to share! i'll link to your post here. ^^
i do not know if any of this will get your account banned. i've ripped several models, so i'm going to assume it's fine as long as you don't try to make money off of it. use your best judgment, be an adult, etc etc etc

PROGRAMS & WEBSITES
ninjaripper 1.7.1 - there's a newer version on the creator's patreon, presumably with support for newer versions of blender and fewer bugs, but i haven't tried that
blender 2.79 - the import addon that comes with ninjaripper 1.7.1 is outdated for the current version of blender (3.5 as of this post), so 2.79 is needed to combine the .RIP files into a .BLEND (blender) file
noesis - ninjaripper saves your textures as .DDS files, noesis lets you view them and export them as .PNGs
blender 3.5 (optional?) - i just like it better than 2.79. if you're completely new it might not matter to you. all of the tutorials linked later are for later versions, though.
mixamo (optional) - rigs your character for you and lets you put them in Situations (like my guy above.) there's a whole library of free animations and poses you can try!
TUTORIALS
how to use ninjaripper - most of what you need to know about actually ripping the files and using ninjaripper is covered here. do not skip this one.
how to use blender 3.5 - full disclosure i haven't finished this series because it's uhhhh many hours long. but if you are a complete newbie to blender, i do recommend at least the first few videos; you'll learn about shortcuts that will make your life easier, how to unfuck your model when it fucks itself for no reason, and different terms that will help you google things you don't know later on. possibly he even covers some of the things i'm about to link! anyway.
what's a uv map?
how to apply textures
how to apply bump maps (note: for our purposes, you wouldn't add a color ramp node, you would add an image node with your bump map, and attach it to the bump node as the person does in the video)
there should be stuff here about weight painting, cloth physics, emission maps (makes your sylvari glow), and other stuff, but um. i haven't figured those out <3  
TIPS

TURN UP YOUR GRAPHICS BEFORE YOU RIP - if you don't, you might end up missing certain textures/glows/etc. HOWEVER, you should turn animations down, because apparently high animation can make your meshes misplace themselves
rip from the character select screen, rather than an instance, because you will have 100 meshes to sort through instead of 1400. i am not exaggerating either of those numbers. if you are new to blender, please love yourself and start with character select.
your textures will be fucked up the first time you try to apply them. this is because the UV maps (the things that tell your textures where to go) of your models are flipped upside down in relation to the texture image. you can flip them back over manually, ooooor you can just flip the entire texture file in something like CSP or photoshop.
for some reason all eyes are red in the texture files. i have not figured out why. i recommend editing the .PNG to have the correct eye color before applying the texture.
mixamo only works for humanoid characters with tight clothing (or without clothing at all). if you try to use it to rig a charr or asura, or someone with a skirt or big sleeves, you will most likely be disappointed.
that's all i can think of for now - if you have other questions, feel free to shoot them my way, although i can't promise i'll have a straight answer ^^;;

[ Depot Agents, Pt 1 ]
Did this as a little warm-up yesterday and today before I jump into coms. I'm not a human artist but CSP's new tools make me feel actually competent at drawing people lmfao
I've had hcs for these three rolling around in my head since I started writing Lost and Found last year or so! Believe it or not, but these three basically keep Gear Station running if the twins are out of town (or when Emmet needs to take a mandatory leave of absence because the man's working too hard).
Uh, feel free to use these if you want, idc, just credit me I guess? I'm not the first to have HCs about the depot agents, and I won't be the last. Their personalities just kinda shined when I started writing my fic.
(Similarities to other HCs by other people are coincidental, we just all share a few braincells lmfao)

Cameron:
1 of 2 depot agents that's been employed before Ingo and Emmet were made Subway Bosses that was promoted to a Lead
Often doesn't wear his hat because his fro cannot be contained
He doesn't THINK he's great with Pokemon, compared to Isadore and Ramses, but he can DEFINITELY hold his own. He's just far better with being an Engineer, problem solving, and customer service.
Was contemplating quitting until Emmet saw his potential and encouraged him to stay.
Speaking of who, he's great at strategy and logistics, so Emmet likes to use him as a rubber duck to bounce ideas off of him.
Cannot be scary to save his life. A real cinnamon roll. Kids love him.
Ingo prefers that Cameron train new Depot Agents, as he's very good at explaining things and doesn't pressure them into learning things too quickly.
Likes food. He can be easily bribed with sweets.
LOVES gossiping with Jackie. If there's a betting pool for something for whatever reason, he's usually the cause of it because Jackie gave him a great scoop.
(I immediately hc'd him as black because I have a cousin named Cameron lol)
Jackie:
Not actually a cryptid, but likes letting people think that. Her commitment to the bit is VERY strong, including roping Ingo and Emmet into it. The twins appreciate her dedication to her work, but DO encourage her to actually go home after her shift...
She actually has an apartment that's right behind Gear Station. Nobody sees her go home since she takes a back exit out of the station.
Nobody knows how long she's been at Gear Station. She did work there before she transitioned. Coincidentally, that's when the rumors about her being a ghost started...
Is VERY mischievous. Isadore despises that the twins don't seem to do anything about her pranks and behavior (as long as it isn't harming anyone or being disruptive, they don't mind. Ingo at least tries to look serious if he has to scold her; Emmet couldn't do that to save his life)
Furze and Cloud have seen her all of about 3 times since they started. Furze screamed when he first saw her (well, she did purposefully scare him...)
Usually runs the night shift. It's very rare she's scheduled during the day, and she will bitch about it the entire time.
No pronouns, do not perceive her (she jokes; she's trans)
Loves to bake. There's often pastries in the break room waiting for the morning crew.
Is a strong trainer. Prefers ghost types, though she has an Aipom that was gifted to her that often follows her around.
Will not hesitate to use her cryptid-like abilities to scare unruly passengers into behaving. She has a particularly low tolerance for creeps and perverts. It's rumored that riding the Single's train at night is the safest way to travel because Jackie does NOT put up with that sort of behavior.
(Isadore begs Jackie to stop scaring passengers. He doesn't want to have to submit another report, even though he greatly appreciates her dedication to protecting passengers).
Isadore:
@pigdemonart and I seemed to share the SAME BRAINCELL with this guy's design. I swear, I hadn't seen it before I did my initial sketches of him XD. I think we all just kinda decided "yeah, he seems like a serious guy" and ran with it
The other depot agent that was employed before Ingo and Emmet took over.
Used to be a punk in his youth, until his parents forced him to take a job at Gear Station to get him some structure and discipline in his life. Then he just kinda decided he really enjoyed it (maybe because his bullying turned into bossing others around to keep them in line)
(Really, he reminds me of Higashi, just older)
Salt and pepper hair. Is definitely daddy material
Looks scary, is scary. But is more "stern father" scary. Really, he doesn't want anyone ending up like he was as a teen/young adult. He won't hesitate to be the dad of the crew to provide some 'tough love'.
Great at customer service. But sometimes Cameron has to reassure people that he's [probably] not mad. He just always looks like that.
Can make jokes, they're just delivered in the most deadpan way possible.
Secretly likes dramas and romance novels.
[ Lost and Found Tidbits ]
(Don't mind these if you haven't read the fic! OC interactions ahead!)
Cameron prefers working with Emmet, Isadore prefers working with Ingo, and Jackie doesn't mind either if she works a day shift (though she works with Shey when she stands in for Ingo)
Isadore handles stress by working even more, which is terrible for both himself and Emmet. He'll work himself to death in order to give Emmet a break.
Jackie and Shey are best friends, somehow. Rumor has it that Jackie hung out at Shey's condo after work once, though neither one will corroborate this rumor.
Out of the three, Cameron is the best at handling someone who is overstimulated. Isadore is the worst, but he IS the best at yelling at anyone who dares to get close. Man knows how to clear a room.
Jackie loves joking about how handsome she thinks Isadore is. She doesn't have any romantic interest in him, but it IS one of the few ways to get Isadore to look flustered and distracted (and when she means it seriously, Isadore does appreciate it). Cameron will join in if he's around.
Cameron and Isadore are a formidable duo when they battle together. Though, Cameron surprisingly battles well alongside anyone.
Bonus: Isadore without his hat. He kind of reminds me of TF2 Medic, too lmfaoooo

Another drawing of Lavona! The theme for Day 18 was Inspired by a metal song. I chose Sinergy's "The Bitch is Back" because I think it fit Lavona well. Don't you agree? I tried redrawing her. TRIED. Man the fire and lighting could of turned out so much better. Drawn in CSP.

CURIOUS- What is your process when making your animatics? And what do you use your individual programs for most? (Ei: csp for art and moment / vegas for effects or somn)
Also, I recently got csp ex for animatic/animation stuff myself- You have any tips for how to make big projects alike yer animatics/tions ?
SO. umm. if im being good and professional i'll do the smart thing and do thumbnails for my animatics to outline the gist of what i want. but uhh if im being honest i only did that for lavender town of which you can watch the wip of here! (for some reason i also animated a little bit within these thumbnails which you shouldnt really do but whatever)

but for the rest of my animatics ive thumbnailed in my brain which is very bad and i advise against it. bc i can remember a few times in toba the tura, my heart still beats and mama where im just sitting there like. uhh. what next HAHA so its just good to draw out smthn beforehand or plan ahead even if its messy!!! my only saving grace is how fast i am at drawing so im able to make up for this LMAOO dont be like me for each of my animatics i make one Big csp file (and a backup) which stores all the frames for that animatic (its usually just titled "a" or smthn i am very uncreative) these bitches get huge. So many layers. theres around 600 layers for lavender town alone. if i were smarter id split these files up so it didnt take ages to load and save but alas i am not. But this is where i do my frame by frame animation basically, i just lower the opacity of a frame and draw over it (onion skinning is the term for this iirc), usually i draw key frames of movement and then just inbetween them so they look a little smoother (e.g: a head turning to the side, id draw the back and then the side profile, and then draw the inbetweens of that motion) , im fond of the choppy lower fps look so thats what i go for! i definitely do not set out for super ultra smooth animation or id be collapsed on the floor rn i think as for editing with sony vegas pro, i import all the frames from csp and use "track motion" and "pan/crop" to tween stuff! (like... make it go from left to right, move the camera around yknow) which is a huge crutch for me Especially in toba the tura, i did very little frame by frame animation for that one LMAOO (not shitting on tweening u can do some really fuckin fun shit with it, like that shot of pk stabbing the lance sentry in toba the tura) i do overall prefer the look of frame by frame but i use a hybrid of the two!! theyre both super cool, complicated and fun in their own ways tbh.

funniest part of my Animation process is wanting the hair and body to be paced differently so i have to slot the hair in like its a fuckin lego piece on a different layer. this truly was the hell of the mama animatic. theres also just an entire layer dedicated to mouths for lip syncing. very funny anyways thats about it, i hope this has been enlightening!! if you have any like super specific specific questions feel free to dm me! i dont have too much experience animating using an art program's animation features specifically tho, so i can't speak to those! i compile and pace all the frames on a timeline in sony vegas pro basically so csp is just for drawing each frame out for me!

I cAN TOTALLY EXPLAIN THE FIRST 2 PICS. The first one is exactly from a year ago when my brainrot just started and I was like "well fuck I guess I have a new f/o now". If you ever see or feel familiar about the first art even though you prooooobably never see it,

Also if you notice, the art style for that one is totally different from others and shhh the reason it was like that is because initially I want to draw them in my actual artstyle around that time and I dont want it to follow the same artstyle like in the show. My friend said Utonium kinda reminds them of that guy from clo.udy wi th a ch.ance of meatb.alls and im like "oH SHITTT". There's more drawings of Utonium pre-brainrot era with this kind of artstyle in my folder but I don't think the world is ready for that yet lol
Anyway as I progresses to the 2nd pic, I changed my mind and was like "wait I actually WANT them to look like they're in PPG and not my own artstyle" so I slowly draw both of them to look more like the ppg style if you understand what I mean??? Althoughhhh in the 2nd pic I still want him to look a bit like my own style with my own touch and despite how much I don't like the reboot, I actually like his gray hair on his sideburns??? So if yall remember that phase and followed me from way way in the early days of this blog, I used to draw Utonium with those streaks before I gradually stopped doing that because of.... actually idk why I stopped??? I should totally add the grays back because I love it actually lol but anywayyyyyy the 2nd pic was also around july too me think? So there's probably like a few weeks gap between the actual totally real not clickbait picture of Chloe and Utonium 'together'.
That was how my render looked like for a few months until november (the 3rd pic).
So in the 3rd pic, I discovered this very magical spectacular magnificent function on CSP called t E xt U r e and holy fuck, let me tell you, I feel like I am a changed person. I was never the cringe person with mediocre render like I was, this legit marked a cultural shift in me, I just feel like I've been blessed by god himself. I spammed the fUCK OUTTA THOSE TEXTURES like it was MY BUSINESS. i pAID CSP FOR FULL PRICE I HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO USE IT TO ITS FULL CAPABILITIES AND SQUEEZE IT OUT OF ALL IT'S WORTH. Although I must say, my render time after that significantly increases. By standard I used to render around 3 hours? Now this bitch took 6 fuckin hours to completely. It wasn't a daijobu era ngl 😔😔😔
And holy fuck do I have a fuckin field day with it. You think I was a changed man back then? I have ascended, I am now r e b o r n. My friends feared my, my peers stared at me, my teachers are baffled by the amount of brainrot I drew at that time. How am I real?
I rendered like that for around 4 months until I discovered something even more cooler:

Okay jk but hhh anyway for my current render; it's kinda more like an accidental discovery? I wanted to look for ways to cut render time because it was really tiring for me to render with a fuckton of texture layers and I also wanted to emulate my fav artist's render style soooo bad (it was luoman if anyone asked) and I kinda figured out how they did it? I mean they still do it better but like I was really inspired to be like them and lemme tell you, I cried for 3 days 3 nights unpaid vacation time when I figured it out. I wasn't kidding when I say I feel like I am a new person. I am quite pessimistic tbh, I'm insecure about my art but like this is the first time in like 3 years ever I feel like I did a major progress and I feel really good.
Why did I made this post? I actually dont feel good about myself, maybe because I am nervous about my test tomorrow and I just need a quick mood boost from myself. I don't believe I did any progress. But now, after typing all of my thoughts at 3 am, after I just put art phases of my braunrot together, kinda believe I actually did progress and I am proud of myself ;w;

back to serious face. I made a new rough model of her to pose around so I could retire the basic bitch built in CSP doll and did this draw-over to test the proportions. (pic of the model is in blender, but she loads into CSP and is pose-able in there just fine) - main adjustment I made drawing was fluffing up the hair and drawing the bob angle more correctly. Gotta go back into blender to fix that up

I'm working on Wind first because there's much less editing. Fire is like 90 odd pages worth of editing. Like break out a chainsaw lets rebuild this bitch. XD Cuz I was super smart and never saved the csp files, thinking I'd never need to go back and edit it. If there's a lesson to be learned: SAVE EVERYTHING. Because YOU WILL be having to go back and edit it XD And hindsight is 20/20/

[ANSWERS] Weirdly Specific Artist Ask Game
1. Art programs you have but don't use
ahahahaha oh boy. The list. Somewhere across like 4 machines and about 5 External drives by now, there's probably: • FireAlpacca (raster, reported to be sai-like but I never got into it) • Inkscape (vectors) • Affinity Designer (Raster/Vector, Illustrator adjacent) • Corel Painter? (I think this came with an intuos years and years back) • Manga Studio 4 (technically this has leaped and evolved into CSP afaik?) • CSP/Clip Studio Paint (I TRY to use it but I always fall back into Sketchbook)
4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw
Oh boy that's a hard one. Off the top of my head, top three are probably trees (how do branches?? leaves?? where? whomst???), glass textures, and just. Humans. In general. Yes, I've avoided humans for long enough that every time I go "oh god how do figure draw". I need to get back into doing regular practice for people T–T
19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
Ok this ones easier. SHINY. GOLD. GEMSTONE. THINGS. Give me all those beautiful stupidly ornate vases and completely ridiculously over the top ceremonial objects. They are my illustrative jam. (But OH BOY when you start thinking about where/how they got all the materials to make these things....)
[minor derail to be like 'NATURE IS ANIMATE. NATURE IS LIVING.' If I have to remind myself that trees are referred to as 'いる' ("iru", to exist for animate things) not 'ある' ("aru", to exist for inanimate things), introduced to me as the "does this thing breathe or not" test which, yes, trees breathe, it would be kind of terrible for us if they didn't thx]
23. Do you use different layer modes
<fiddles with the modes> me? <furrowed brow, flipping through layer modes> maybe. Sort of. Just because I use them doesn't mean I understand how they work. (kidding)
Yeah, when the occasion/need arises. I tend to gravitate towards multiply and overlay settings. Usually I try to keep it to only using them when I can't computer how a colour should look. It's a lot of guessing and messing around with modes though to find what does the trick on a case-by-case basis.
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically
I don't know if I'd actually rule anything out as "doesn't inspire". Just about anything can trigger an idea that my brain will latch onto and run (over the hills) and far away. There's plenty of media that I do love that I haven't really done anything for though, in a perpetual loop of "I should do that, but I gotta get portfolio stuff done first".

Rebelle, FireAlpaca, and I thiiink I have SAI on my other computer too? I just tend to stick with CSP and MS Paint these days

i like to draw left-facing but like. in a 3/4ths view way :]
3. What ideas come from when you were little
(copy-pasting this from an earlier ask) when i make fakemon designs a lot of the time they come from drawings i did when i was a kid :] but other than that, genuinely a lot of my angsty work aligns with little meg because even back then, i loved that sort of thing
4. Fav character/subject that’s a bitch to draw
claude von reigen and chrom and byleth. all those fire emblem characters with painfully detailed designs :') but also hades lovestruck because i can't draw him for the life of me. and ALSO also. adrien agreste. 8 years and i still can't draw him
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself
mmmmmm probably i post about half of what i do. a lot of my unposted things are wips or sketches that will likely never be finished- but i sketch a lot, so there's a ton of them.

4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw
i love to draw character art, especially gw2 stuff right now... sylvari anatomy and skin patterns are a big pain to figure out for me. these leafy motherfuckers have lines everywhere it's so annoying. smoothing them out with a buffer <- guy who's learning and having fun and loves it, but i hate it too
otherwise something that's really hard for me is like. plain humans without much flair to them... idk what my issue is but especially something like an artistic nude without clothes to distract from (everything) is like ohhhhh i drew the most boring thing in the world. awesome. check out this expanse of flesh. welcome in and sit anywhere. <- i think a big part of it is that humans dont have a lot of clearly defined features that are easy FOR ME to pick out, this is strictly to me. i have trouble just deciphering faces in day to day life so trying to draw a proportionate and believable face is like ohhhh this sucks so hard. we should ban this.
9. What are your file name conventions
i do my BEST to make my files findable later, so it's usually character name, drawing topic or content, and then if it's an export, what purpose the file serves. for example.

i delete csp files when they become irrelevant or i feel i no longer need access to them. sometimes this comes back to haunt me but usually not
and all of this is sorted into folders based on the subject matter; I've got folders within folders for original content stuff and general oc stuff I'm not currently working on; then a bunch of fandom folders. then my main art/work folder where wips and stuff live until i sort them. tbh it's a mess right now, I need to go in and clean up but that's a lot of work <:) over 1600 files and 52 folders right now...
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated
picking just from new stuff, both of these slapped recently but especially the first one... i did a whole thing...
