Crowley is Lucifer
(Ok I know some of you don't believe this theory but I highly suggest you give this a quick read anyway. I tried to make it short and easy and I'll be going chronologically, from s1 all through s2)
- First, let's get this out of the way, Lucifer and Satan aren't neccesarilly the same person. Even in the show the devil that appeared in s1 has only ever been reffered to as Satan, not even once as Lucifer.
- In the bible Lucifer was the one to tempt Eve with the apple, and who do we know that does that in the show. Crowley is literally THE snake from Eden.
- An obvious one perhaps, but the red hair is also a giveaway
- In the bible Jesus was tempted by the devil for 30 days, in the show Crowley says "I showed him all the kingdoms of the world", so that's another role Lucifer has that Crowley had in the show
- It's well known (even mentioned in the Sandman) that Lucifer was the most beautiful of all angels, and our demon is played by no other than David Tennant
Now on to season 2 because there's a LOT to unpack here
- He litterally started the engine of the universe which was one of Lucifers roles
- He's the first to say "let there be light", which is pretty fucking huge since that is Gods line
- "I worked closely with upstairs on it" even in the first scene they're telling us Crowley is an angel of very very high rank
- He fell for asking questions, which is litterally what Lucifer fell for, for questioning God. This in and of itself should be a pretty big indicator. "I only ever asked questions"
- Shax: "a miracle of enourmous power only the mightiest of archangels can perform"
Crowley: "How do you know I didn't do it"
And Shax just... doesn't counter that. She looks even skeptical, as if it COULD be a possibility, unlike Uriel who says to Aziraphale don't excpect us to believe you did it. Shax litterally doesn't shut the option down which confirms Crowley has the power not only of an archangel but of the mightiest kind
- In the bookshop with Gabriel/Jim he says "I don't remember. It [gravity] seemed like a good idea when we were all talking about it"
- "You're welcome to come in, you might even spot an archangel" don't tell me this was Crowley just egging Shax on and not being sneaky
- The fact that he could sense the demons coming. "Somethings wrong""It's coming in waves", when Aziraphale couldn't. It could be a demon thing but we saw Sandalphon, an archangel of lower rank, in the first season mention "something smells evil" so obviously angels can sense demons too, they just have to be powerful enough. And keep in mind Sandalphon was already in the book shop for quite some time, Crowley sensed them even before they had arrived (he also sensed the hell hound who was some fucking miles away)
- The.fucking.folder. "You have to be a throne or dominion above" and this dude opens these clasified documents like it's nothing. If this isn't an indicator of his high position as an angel I don't know what is.
- He's worked with Saraqael, another very high ranking angel
- "I'm the only first order archangel in the room"... and the camera imediately pans to Crowley, and for anyone who's read the book and watched the show you know that rarely anything is coincidental
- When the Metatron says they can't lose another prince of heaven. This... this fucking line. So it's relatively well known that Gabriel and Lucifer are brothers, and if Gabriel is one of the princes of heaven I wonder who the other one could be. "Two princes of heaven". And the Metatrons words were very careful, he doesn't say lost as in heaven can't find him, he says it in the context that they won't be sending Gabriel to hell since they won't lose another prince to downstairs
- In the bookshop when no one can identify the Metatron he turns to Crowley who imediately recognises him. Now you have this dude, who's literally on top of the angel hierarchy and is responsible for running heaven and the connection to God themself, surrounded by archangels and a principality you spoke to face to face with just a few years ago and... none of them can tell who you are, the only one who does is the literal demon. That tells us that Crowley has not only seen him in this form, but has probably worked with the Metaron himself personally. "Always asking damn fool questions", 10 million angels and he remembers what this one particular angel was like 6000 years ago
- Crowley is also very reluctant to reveal his identity as an angel. Now if he were just an ordinary angel of no real significance he wouldn't have a problem revealing his name, but... if his name was one that's the literal representation of all evil in this world, then it is understandable he keeps it a secret, in fear he might scare Aziraphale away
- And I wanted to leave the best for last. So you remember in the book when Crowley has to sign his name to start Armaggedon, and Hastur tells him "no, your real name" after which he reluctantly writes it. Now in the book we never see him write anything, but in the show we see him write a sygil, something that looks very mich like an L. An L... A FUCKING L. And now I wonder how this theory didn't come up sooner.
(Also he can fucking stop time, like dafuq)
Edit:
- "Oh looky here it's Lucifer and the guys" we all thought he was talking about someone else, he's just refferencing things other angels have said about HIM. FUCK
- I keep seing people saying Crowleys memories were wiped because he couldn't remember Saraqael and Furfur. But I think people forget, demons lie. He's lying to make them think he's not that angel they worked with, that he's not Lucifer. (In season 1 we hear him a few times refferencing his life as an angel, so he does remember most of it)
- Also saying if the Raphael theory were true then as showrunners they would have mentioned him somewhere for those not that familiar with the bible (or don't read much fanfiction). The refferences for Crowleys past are so so vague that it would be too sudden and confusing if he were Raphael. But there is one name that everyone is familiar with, no matter who you are how old you are or where you're from, a name that needs no introduction.
Edit 2:
- Back to him being the most beautiful angel, I don't think it was ever quite explained how every single demon when they're in hell looks... awful, but Crowley doesn't. Beelzebub has the spores all over their face, Hastur the maggots and the sh-, Dagon the scales etc. But Crowley doesn't, not even when he's in hell, he's always just so, well, pretty.
- I saw a few people asking about how Lucifer started the rebellion and Crowley wouldn't do that. I think it's the same Crowley who wouldn't get stuck in traffic after creating the M25, or the same Crowley that wanted to call Aziraphale after bringing down the entire London network, "you told them you invented the spanish inquisition, and started the second world war""so the humans beat me to it that's not my fault", "so all this is your demonic work?""no, the humans thought it up themselves nothing to do with me"
- Also I think Satan's in charge of hell not Crowley the same way the Metatron's in charge of heaven and not Gabriel (and who can very easily demote angels if he so wishes)
Edit 3:
- like some of you pointed out Lucifer is also known/means Light-bringer. And Crowley was the first to say "let there be light."
- The file he opens with Muriel is Gabriels file, a class A archangel, so if he knows the password to that it means that either he's on the same level as Gabriel, or above him.

Hehe, it's Crowley time.
I was listening to music videos that were made from other fans on YouTube of Good Omens and I hit some gems.
Most of which are about the special event that occurred between Aziraphale and Crowley. So, to satisfy my own storytelling mood and craving for something fun, I made an extra scene after the credits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HAHAHAHA. After getting to set this up on here, I can see all my mistakes. Oh well, I'll fix them after I get some sleep. Maybe this will be another project to color after I finish Azi's image. Then I'll do an after credit Azi in elevator reaction. ❤️

Crowley ISN'T Lucifer, But...
So today, Neil Gaiman basically killed The Crowley-was-Lucifer theory, which is fine. I thought the theory was fun, but to be honest, it never completely satisfied me.
The most compelling evidence (for me) regarding the theory were two things 1) we see Crowley before the fall, creating the stars and Lucifer was the Lightbringer, and 2) a lot of what Satan/Lucifer is attributed are things we see Crowley doing in the show's flashbacks.
I don't think it was wrong to recognize that the mythology of Lucifer/Satan has connections to what we see in Crowley's character. I just think it's missing some important context.
For example, Crowley is The Snake from the Garden of Eden. We know that for a fact. The Snake tempts Eve to eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and humanity falls (aka Original Sin). Satan is never mentioned in Genesis. But over time, the snake is attributed to being Satan.
That doesn't mean Crowley is Lucifer/Satan. It just means humans in the GOmens verse tend to attribute the demonic things Crowley does to Satan over time because they simplify their own history. The same can be true for enacting wrath on Job or showing Jesus all the kingdoms of the world (tempter of the Gospels). Those things happen, a demon does them, and later down the line, they are conflated as being done by Satan.
Originally, the word satan just meant "adversary" or "opposer." It was a word that described any adversary to God, sometimes even humans. Over time the concept of satan evolved to Ha-Satan, aka The Adversary, the personification of all evil whom Lucifer and The Devil are often attributed to. So there's actual real-world evidence of these translations of any adversary becoming The Adversary, and anything anyone does that opposes God's plan eventually becomes attributed to Satan over time.
And since Crowley is the one on Earth doing things for most of human history, I'm sure most of the things he does get attributed to Satan in the telephone of human mistranslations and simplifications.
Basically, Crowley is the overworked employee who does all the work, and his boss gets all the credit.
But Lucifer, the angel Satan was before he fell, was Not Crowley, and I think that's important. A lot of people were pointing out that Lucifer questioned God, and Crowley asked questions so badda-bing badda-boom Crowley=Lucifer, but I think that's ignoring or simplifying a lot about Lucifer.
Lucifer didn't just question God or rebel against God. Lucifer wanted to be Above God. (Originally, the concept of Lucifer was a king of Babylon, and the concept came strongly from Sumerian mythology, but he was eventually conflated as the Devil/Satan in theology over time). The Book of Isaiah basically describes the main motivations of Lucifer:
Isaiah 14:14: "I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High"
The Cave of Treasures was responsible for the first and most popular proto-orthodox Christian explanation for why the angels fell. Basically, the concept of fallen angels in the Bible is dubious at best. In a lot of rabbinic Jewish literature, Satan and his satans are still angels and servants of God; they just accuse humanity of wrongdoing and punish them for sins. Christianity really developed the idea that Satan was the enemy of God, and the two of them were the figureheads of Good vs. Evil. And with Satan being conflated as Lucifer and Lucifer being conflated as a fallen angel in the Book of the Watchers and that concept of fallen angels (which in the Book of Watchers notably happened after the fall of man, the angels fell because they had sex with humans) Christianity suddenly needed to explain why all these angels became fallen in the first place BEFORE the temptation of Eve, so the Fall of Man and Original Sin was retroactively preceded by the Fall of Angels, and then they had to come up with Why They Fell.
The two biggest Sins that became popular explanations for why the Angels fell were Pride and Envy. Pride, as taken from Isaiah and attributed to Lucifer The Angel instead of Lucifer The Babylonian King, where Lucifer wanted to be above God and have divinity for himself. Envy came from the Cave of Treasures, where Satan was jealous of mankind and refused to prostrate himself before Adam. Basically, God told all the Angels that Humans were going to be the next big important thing and Most Loved by God. Lucifer got jealous because He was Most Loved by God, so he decided to overthrow God out of envy, and the reason why he tortured humans is that he still is envious of them.
So I think fundamentally, if we look at these proto-orthodox explanations of The Fall, Crowley obviously isn't Lucifer. Crowley never wanted to be God. Crowley never hated or envied humanity. He protects them. He pranks them and tempts them, sure, but without malice.
He just had questions. He was Just Some Guy Angel who wanted to make the stars and didn't understand why it had to all go kablooey in six thousand years. Heaven's institution refused to give him answers (or even let him ask his questions, based on his awe at Job conversing with God), so he went and talked to the other angels who were also disgruntled with management in Heaven but for maybe more selfish reasons (Hey Look, It's Lucifer and The Guys). And because he was unsatisfied with Heaven's system, he ended up hanging out with the wrong people, getting involved in the war, and sauntering vaguely downward. And fundamentally, Heaven is going to punish anyone who challenges the status quo. It doesn't matter why or if they had good intentions.
I kind of don't want to know what angel Crowley was before he fell. Maybe he was high-ranking, and maybe he lost his memories, but ultimately the angel he was doesn't matter anymore. The trauma of the war and the fall stripped the angel Crowley used to be and transformed him into the demon we know now. The demon he is now is the only character we need to know. It is fun to theorize, and the angel he used to be might inform the demon we see now (although I think we have most of the information we need to understand that). But the war, the fall, and his time on earth, I think, inform his character far, far more.

Huh. But if Crowley is Lucifer then it makes even more sense why he won't take up Azi on his offer.
Azi's whole argument is grounded on the fact that HE is now high in the hierarchy to be able to change Heaven for the better -
And Crowley 100% knows that won't work BECAUSE HE IS FUCKING LUCIFER HE WAS ALREADY THERE.
And Aziraphale doesn't know it. Omg Azi......

So we know Crowley is unique among the demons for having an imagination but I wonder if he's always been different in that way. It takes an imagination to put yourself in another's shoes and develop empathy.
The angels, while moral, have absolutely zero empathy and are honestly the most callous characters in the show. Heck even Az seems to lack basic empathy and Crowley has to teach it to him time and time again.
Really makes me think Crowley was Lucifer. I imagine God would have loved his insight, patience, kindness, all the virtues he still holds.... but, as we've seen with Az, when Crowley questions the rigid angelic morals and challenges their righteousness, he can be met with annoyance and hostility. I imagine God loving his insights at first, but the more Crowley would critique and point out that narrow minded black and white morality will never work, the angrier God would have been.
Perhaps he too had a memory wipe, maybe in an attempt to erase this dangerous empathy. He could have started the rebellion, forgotten all of it, still believed in his own ideals, fought and fell, with no one the wiser to who he truly was.

I’m not entirely convinced on the “Crowley is Lucifer” theory…
But if you take it along with the “Aziraphale is Raphael” theory… (I’m really into this one but more on this later)
And read Lucifer by Joost Van Den Vondel…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note Raphael’s use of a pet name (Joy of my life, my inspiration) and Lucifer’s denial and confusion when Raphael accuses him of seeking power and lying.
In this work of literature, Lucifer’s motivation is the power that humans will have, and how it will affect him, reminiscent of how Crowley is incredulous when he’s told that the universe was created for humans and that it would be demolished soon.
Also, Lucifer doesn’t just decide to rebel on his own. It takes some other angels (including Beelzebub) to convince him.
Raphael is also very upset about what happens.
Ok now Aziraphale is Raphael. The similarity of the names. Also, he wouldn’t have to be an actual capital-A Archangel, he could even be a little-a archangel and have been promoted to principality later. He had most contact with humans and is the angel in Eden, Raphael’s role in Paradise Lost.
Ok another thought just hit me. And it’s entirely stupid.
Crowley: (leads rebellion)
Crowley: (falls)
Everyone else: (fails to recognise him)
Crowley: (treated like crap)

Crowley is Lucifer theory.
So I was rewatching S1 and I saw another season that shows Crowley was important in heaven.
In episode 3, Gabriel tells Aziraphale that they expelled Crowley and the rest.
Why would he say 'Crowley and the rest'? Then Crowley might have been the most important angel of the group of the fallen ones, and as far as I know, acording to the bible, it can be Lucifer.
Even though I think he can be Raphael too. I see both theories factible.

New head canon: Crowley quietly raised every human that died on his and Aziraphale’s exploits (wee Morag and magic shop man for examples) from the dead off screen.
Cuz why the heck raise the carpet man like it was NOTHING and let those poor Scottish lesbians be torn apart?
(Probably cuz he was “free” from hell by then but shhhh it’s head-canon)
EDIT: Neil says Crowley can’t raise people from the dead and that Mr Brown wasn’t dead and I personally find this to be the sloppiest but of story telling then in S2 which I loved by the way but I think the criticism stands

Crowley is Lucifer??
So I've heard a little something something about this theory and in the Biblical sense Lucifer = Satan.
It's been knew. Satan or the devil are nicknames for Luci. The devil was in season one of GO. The whole plot revolved around Lucifer. And Crowley is the one who delivers the antichrist. I don't remember him making the antichrist. Sooo how does that work? They literally see Satan himself errupt from the ground.
It sound cool as fuck and it would be awesome if that were true, but to me it doesn't make much sense
We know Crowley was a big deal before falling and we still got the Raphael theory buuuut what does the J. in Crowley full chosen name stand for?
Possible candidates:
Jophiel means the ‘Beauty of God’ (sometimes called Iofiel, Zophiel, Jofiel) and is particularly helpful to those of us in the creative pursuits of teaching and writing of the arts.
Jophiel, we are told, is one of the original Archangels of creation. It is his job to transmit the ‘thought’ of God into the minds of man and woman. Through Divine inspiration of ‘God-ideas’ we co-create the beauty and art form in the world and some of us with much practice will reach a state of mastery, or enlightenment, where a point of complete understanding of how everything in the universe works, is finally reached.
This one could fit. With Crowley beauty and him seeing beauty wherever he looks (Aziraphale in particular) Buuuuut
Jerahmeel
Believed to be one of the Seraph he is said to have been the angel that drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. He is the ruler of the planet Saturn and cited as the intelligence of planet Jupiter.
The Hebrew name Jerahmeel, which appears several times in the Tanakh (see the article Jerahmeel), also appears in various forms as the name of an archangel in books of the intertestamental and early Christian periods.
Saint Jegudiel the Archangel also Jhudiel or Jehudiel (Hebrew: יהודיאל‎‎ Yehudiel "laudation of God" or "God of the Jews") is one of the Seven Archangels in Eastern Orthodox tradition and in the eastern rites of the Catholic Church.

Also, on ep 2 season 1. Minute 21 15.
Anathema is staring at a drawing representing Lucifer and the camera cuts to Crowley in the almost same position of the drawing.
Idk just saying

Even if I don’t agree with one, I always read Good Omens fan theories, cuz they’re all so well thought out and fun to ponder over.
I love the Raphael/Lucifer theory. Even though, Neil debunked the Lucifer one, it’s still fun to think about.
An AU where Anthony J Crowley is Lucifer and Aziraphale falls in love with him? That sounds amazing.
Someone write a fic about it!

Ok, so a curious thing,
We know that Crowley was certainly Throne or dominion or higher?
Now he also says.. “that’s something to scare away the young Cherubs” … or something like that?
Now he would only say this if he was higher than a cherub?
Does this mean he was a Seraphim? As in the highest angel. I am convinced he was the prince who was banished.

My favorite Good Omens theory is “Crowley is Lucifer” cause like THINK ABOUT IT. He was the snake in the garden, he’s the one who destroyed Jeb’s life, he showed Jesus the kingdoms of the world, all things that Lucifer did in the Bible. Now you might be saying, “but Bernie, Crowley isn’t the king of hell.” WELL EITHER IS LUCIFER. Lucifer and Satan are two different people, and in Good Omens Satan is explicitly the King of Hell.
Now, you might be saying “what about the “it’s Lucifer and the guys” line?”, and I say what about it? You *really* think that they’d throw away a plot as big as Crowley being Lucifer over a *tiny* little throw away line? Not to mention that it can be easily retconned because when he says that, his voice goes up in pitch, which means he could be mocking someone, like *Satan*. So, instead of Crowley coming across Lucifer and the guys, it’s Satan coming across Crowley and the Guys.
Not to mention that Crowley fell cause he “asked too many questions”, and who else fell because he questioned God’s Plan? LUCIFER. Not to mention the snake, the red hair, the black wings, how *hot* he is (Lucifer was canonically the hottest Angel cause he was God’s favorite). And him being able to open the file that only Thrones and above can open, you know what’s above a Throne? AN ARCHANGEL. Also his line about him and the others making up being written out of existence to scare the Cherubs, and who else knew about that? MICHAEL. This would *also* explain Crowley’s hate of Gabriel because Gabriel was the one who beat Lucifer in the first battle of Heaven and Hell.
Not to mention how thematically satisfying it is for Gabriel to attempt to kill Lucifer when he was pretending to be Aziraphale, and for Crowley to fuck with him! That is such a Lucifer thing to do! And it’d explain Crowley’s hesitation in helping Gabriel before he even heard of the trouble Aziraphale would be in.
Also, Lucifer would’ve been very important in hell, important enough to have his freedom on Earth without someone regularly checking up on him like Gabriel did to Aziraphale. Also, Lucifer is the sin of Pride, and Crowley is *definitely* a proud person.
Now, I do like the “Crowley is Raphael” theory, but it doesn’t make quite as much sense. Other than him obviously being an Archangel, there’s not a lot that connects him to Raphael, especially cause Raphael didn’t fall.
You know who it makes sense for them being Raphael though? *Aziraphale*. The angel who’s name *literally* means “Of Raphael”. Because not only did Aziraphale not fall, but Raphael is the Angel of Healing. You know who we see heal? Aziraphale.
But now your saying “Aziraphale is a principality not an Archangel!” Easy. He was demoted. That’d explain why he doesn’t remember Crowley before the Garden. And who better to keep an eye on a former Archangel, *than another former archangel*.
Also, why would the archangels believe that a principality was able to preform a miracle stronger than any archangel, because he used to be an archangel. You also wanna know what’s stronger than one Archangel? *Two motherfucking archangels*.
But, you could be saying, “why was Aziraphale demoted then?” I dunno, because he spoke up when a very friendly archangel was cast out. Now, Aziraphale is not the type of man to stand up for someone to the point of falling, but if I was God, who just cast out a bunch of my angels, I wouldn’t take kindly to another Angel questioning me. I’d probably demote him just so he doesn’t question me again, which is exactly what God did.
