My birthday is on March 4th and I have a Drabble request/prompt/please ramble on about this idea in the lovely way you do with all them bullet points and angst that’s so romantic.

No seriously, ilu. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, my dear friend! I hope you have a wonderful birthday and are spoiled rotten by your beautiful loved ones (and avoid bites, haha).

I am not organized enough to write anything for this but I can freestyle some ideas so – birthday hats on everybody, streamers and cake: let’s go with some Killer of Men Widowisms. Um, proceed with caution I guess, but it’s probably pretty tame.

Okay so who is Tess in this scenario and why is she doing it? A contract killer or out for her own kicks? I like the sound of the latter to differentiate from anything else I’ve done.

So let’s go full serial killer with this one. She’s organised, in control of her desires and travels for work, so she never chooses marks in her own backyard. She aborts more kills than she follows through with because she’s so meticulous that her marks meet very specific criteria and things can’t be traced back to her.

She likes to drug them before they get started as physical advantage but changes up the method of actual murder to try and eliminate falling into traceable patterns.

Sometimes she goes years between kills and as a result, when she picks Joel up in a bar she’s feeling particularly itchy. This guy seems kind of nice. She might ordinarily let this fish go, nice men don’t deserve messy ends.

But as their time together progresses she starts to get another vibe off him, and thinks maybe he’s not quite so nice as she thought.

So just as she’s about to unhook him she decides to go through with it, even though her instincts are undecided about what is actually going on.

They go back to her motel room, she drugs his drink but she’s still not sure, something’s off. They get it on and he doesn’t really seem to respond to the effects of the drug she gave him, but she’s so intrigued by being unable to figure him out that she doesn’t pay it the attention she should.

He’s rougher with her than she’d normally tolerate but she likes it – it’s exciting not really knowing if she’s in control or not, she’s always in control, and this uncertainty really thrills her.

They have ~amazing chemistry ofc

She doesn’t try to kill him when she normally would at point of climax. She tells herself she’ll give it a few hours and maybe try again.

While Joel’s in the bathroom she examines his drink and the bottle of pills in her bag. Counts them, she definitely gave it to him but … what’s that? These pills aren’t hers. These are not her drugs.

Joel opens the door and he’s like, “You think I didn’t see that comin’ a mile away?”

Tess: “Did you go through my purse? Those are my motion sickness pills,” blah blah lie lie.

And Joel tosses the pills on the bed. “Those are cheatin’, sweetheart. Where’s the fun if you don’t have to fight for it?”

Serial Killer Tess, meet Serial Killer Joel.

For his part, Joel was preying on her in turn and cottoned on when he caught her spiking his drink, which he then dealt with with some slick sleight of hand and swapped the rest of the pills while she was distracted on a phone call or something (idk)

Joel considered playing along and pretending to be drugged - he thought she was just going to rob him and liked the idea of turning the tables on her at some critical moment (surprise!serial killer, baby!)

But as it went on he realised she had no interest in robbing him, and he started recognising himself in her, and realised what was ACTUALLY her game

And yeah he liked that

Quite a lot

Very much actually thanks

So he let it all evolve but while she was courting the idea of killing him, as was he with her

So when he announced himself she finally got it and she was like, "Who the fuck are you?"

And he's all, "who the fuck are YOU?"

Sick professional meet and greet, each very impressed they've never even heard of each other

But they're successful because nobody knows their secret ... so only one person can leave in the morning, right?

Bulb, you are an absolute gem. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about my number one boy (and thank you @shojojidais for encouragement, ilu Maryam).

This post got way out of hand. I'll put the basic text below, but the full version with detailed footnotes and an index of all the YouTube videos I linked is on Google Docs, if anyone would like to see it.

Choi Minho: An Appreciation

Who is Choi Minho?

Choi Minho was born on December 9th, 1991. In May 2008, he debuted as a member of the boyband SHINee, meaning that Minho has been in our lives for almost 15 wonderful years now. His official position in SHINee is main rapper and visual (i.e., the face of the group), but these days he sings about as often as he raps. (His voice is especially lovely when he gets to sing in his natural range, which he almost never gets to do with SHINee, sob sob).

Minho originally hoped to become a soccer player, but his father, the soccer coach Choi Yun-kyum, denied him, saying he hoped Minho would pursue a less difficult career. Unfortunately for Coach Choi (but perhaps fortunately for us), Minho was just born too pretty to do something more normal. At age 14, he was scouted by SM Entertainment while visiting a ski resort with his family, and the rest is history.

Why I love him

He is a true genius of hard work

In spite of the fact that he more or less stumbled into being an idol, Minho has always given 100 percent of himself to SHINee—in fact, Minho always gives 100 percent of himself to everything, whether it’s singing, rapping, dancing, acting, speaking English, sports, or drag. He hasn’t always been good at everything he does, but part of what makes Minho such a special person is his endless capacity for growth.

Here’s what he had to say about being criticized for his acting in To the Beautiful You (2012):

Even from my point of view, I more than deserved those criticisms. I struggled a lot in my first lead role in ‘To The Beautiful You,’ but looking back, it is because of that past that I have confidence now, so I definitely don’t consider it a taint on my history … Back then, I just stubbornly thought that I just have to do well. At a young age, I was in a leading role and I needed to lead the drama by paying attention to the people and situation around me, but I wasn’t able to. A lead isn’t someone who just acts well on his own, but leads the entire drama. I should have paid more attention to the other things, but I focused too much on myself, and it resulted in me just awkwardly standing out. But I learned a lot from that, and it was ‘medicine’ for me. To be honest, being criticized so much was a huge lesson for me. It’s a lie if I say that I am not scared of being criticized for doing badly. But I think it’s something that I should put up with. It’s only right to acknowledge what I’m lacking and correct it. Of course, everyone wants to do well from the start. But I don’t think I’m gifted that much so I need a lot of experience.

Similarly, on writing his own raps for SHINee:

At first I was very bad at it. But if I didn't do it then it would be detrimental to me as well as to the members so I thought that I should really try to do it properly. It's true that when you put in effort your skills change. I thought, there isn't anything that can’t be done if a person really tries…

What makes Minho’s growth doubly impressive to me is that he’s not a naturally confident person. On the contrary, he’s painfully self-aware and takes deeply failure to heart:

After filming Dream Team, on days I won I would be in a really good mood, and on days I lost I would keep thinking about it. It's the same as when I make a mistake on stage. When I mess up on one step on stage, I feel hateful towards myself. I grow angry. Wondering why I did that that during that step. I think it's because my competitiveness is so strong. But that doesn't mean I enjoy competing. Instead, if there is a competition I tend to avoid it. Because if one wins, the other loses. Because any person, no matter who it is, dislikes losing.

When Minho first debuted, most people immediately clocked him as the weakest member of SHINee—and he knew it. He couldn’t rap (his infamously terrible rap on “The SHINee World”—which he really wants you to know he did not write—is legendary both in the fandom and beyond), he couldn’t act, and while he was never the worst dancer in the group, he didn’t stand out much either.

It also didn’t help that SM saddled him with the part of the ‘cool, silent type,’ when his real personality is goofy, warm, and sentimental—not to mention teasing, nagging, nurturing, full of natural aegyo, and loud. Variety is usually a place where K-Pop ‘visuals’ get to prove their worth, but in SHINee’s early variety appearances, Minho was just sort of...there.

In his own words,

Looking back, I went through a slump during my early debut days. I first thought, “Why did I debut?” I couldn’t dance or sing, and I couldn’t say anything in variety shows. Before debut, I was good at talking and confident, but standing in front of the public as a celebrity isn’t an easy job. (161208 SHINee’s Choi Minho - Media Interview (3))

Now, it’s never made sense to me that anyone could praise SHINee’s live stages out of one side of their mouth and trash Minho’s performance skills out of the other—there’s just no room in their choreo for any member of the group to be lagging significantly behind the others.

These days, I would be shocked to find anyone who doesn’t see Minho as an integral part of SHINee. But it’s worth taking a minute to acknowledge what a dynamic, well-rounded performer he’s become in his own right. I was so happy when I saw other people calling Minho’s rap in “Atlantis” the best part of the song, 1) because IT FUCKING IS, and 2) it made me realize just how many great rap moments Minho has had going back years. The Story of Light alone is full of them (have you guys listened to “Retro” yet today?), but there are so many older favorites, too (it’s actually pissing me off that the previous video I linked doesn’t include Minho’s part in “One Minute Back,” so here it is).

Minho hasn’t just become a strong idol-rapper (he’s never going to be on the front cover of XXL Magazine or whatever, but that’s fine, because it’s not his job); he’s also grown into a strong vocalist, a damn good dancer, and an excellent variety idol and MC (he is seriously so funny, you guys). As an actor, he’s worked hard to earn genuine praise from audiences and critics while accepting relatively ‘risky’ parts (he played a delinquent in the indie drama Derailed—where he smoked! and swore! and got beaten up by Ma Dong-seok!—as well as a gay character in the drama Yumi’s Cells). He’s also an underrated lyricist, with more than 40 songwriting credits throughout SHINee’s discography.

Last but certainly not least, Minho has (flaming) charisma and stage presence for days, as well as an astonishing ability to ‘commit to the bit’ that’s elevated many a goofy SHINee performance (my current favorite example is this performance of “Girls Girls Girls” at SHINee World III in Seoul—notice how many of the comments mention that Minho was obviously feeling himself in that bathrobe!).

Since he finished his mandatory military service, Minho has been branching out with more of his own solo activities, including a radio show, Best Choice (again: he is so funny, you guys!), and a forthcoming solo album, Chase. He seems to have become comfortable in his own skin in a way that we should all hope to be in our early thirties. As a fan, I consider it a privilege to have watched him blossom into a better, more confident version of himself. He is a true genius of hard work, and I could not be more excited for his solo.

He has the biggest heart

I love Minho because Minho has so much love to give. He’s the kind of person who leaves notes telling his friends he loves them while they’re asleep. He once saved all the SHINee members’ names in his phone under “My Lovely ___.” He writes the longest dedications of anyone in the group. He’s thoughtful and dedicated and has a lot of feelings (though by his own admission, he tends to hide them, so that he can continue to give strength to others). He is, for lack of a better word, all ooey-gooey inside, with a sentimental streak a mile wide.

Minho always goes the extra mile to support the other members of SHINee. SHINee’s leader, Onew, once called him the group’s “heart aid”:

Whatever happens, he is by our side and calls out to us. Minho is really a person who becomes our strength in any situation … It’s not only with me, even with other members, he is our heart aid and is a very important existence to all of us (2014)

When the other members cry onstage, Minho is often the first to comfort them. Who could forget the iconic photo of Minho hugging an inconsolable Jonghyun to his bosom after SHINee’s first music show win for “Juliette,” or all the many times he comforted Jonghyun—always the crybaby of the group—onstage thereafter?

Surprising Jonghyun on the last day of Blue Night—and bringing lots of tissues, because he knew Jonghyun would cry (170402). (The part of this video everyone remembers is the part where Minho tells Jonghyun that he brought the softest box tissues “because Jonghyun-hyung’s skin is precious,” but really, every second of it just radiates compassion and care. We should all be so lucky to have a friend like Minho.).

While he was in the military, he sent food trucks to Taemin to support Taemin’s comeback (200907)

On the day he was discharged , Minho went straight from the military to see Taemin backstage at Inkigayo, without even changing out of his marine uniform. I should add that Minho doesn’t do all this stuff because he’s not booked and busy himself. He’s constantly filming, doing photoshoots, and randomly upstaging Melania Trump. Supporting the other members isn’t something he does just because he has the time; it’s something he works at consciously.

When SHINee went on Blue Night in 2016, Minho described how he transfers his support to the busiest member depending on the season:

Jonghyun: Then Minho-ssi, which member do you feel the most attached to? Minho: Out of the four? I think it changes with the season. Jonghyun: Who is it in the recent season? Minho: In the recent season, it’s Jonghyun-hyung. It’s because he’s the busiest. He needs to prepare for the concert. I think I try to take more care of the member who’s the busiest. Jonghyun: Then Key has been very busy until recently because of Drinking Solo. Key, did you feel that Minho was taking care of you? Did you feel it, Key? Minho’s love? Key: No, not at all. Jonghyun: He must have just thought about it a lot in his mind. (Ha.) Key: But he really is surprising. I think his day is a little longer than other people’s. I don’t know how he can watch them all [referring to the members’ activities]. Jonghyun: It’s a great thing. It means he has a lot of affection. Key: It’s not that I don’t watch it on purpose. When I turn on TV and find that our member is on by chance, I would watch it then. But to watch something intentionally…it means it’s a plan. Jonghyun: Minho watches everything, all the members’ schedules.

I’ve been a fan of SHINee for a long time—long enough to remember a time when the members didn’t all get along as famously as they do now—and I really believe that they wouldn’t have made it nearly this far if not for Minho holding them together.

I thought about saying something here like, “Minho’s strength is giving strength to others,” but I don’t think that would be giving nearly enough credit. What I most admire about Minho isn’t just that he gives strength to others, but that his love for other people becomes his strength—that it enables him to do the impossible and find that extra hour in the day.

This is all very sweet just by itself, but it becomes even more impressive when you consider—and here is where I start to get into a little bit of conjecture—how easily Minho could have given in to jealousy and resentment.

Imagine, for a moment, that you are 16 or 17 years old, you’ve just made your entertainment industry debut, and you’re surrounded by people whom everyone agrees are more talented than you. This isn’t the first time you’ve been overlooked; at home, you have a brother whom everyone agrees is smarter, more popular, and better-looking, and your own parents joke that maybe he should have debuted instead of you. People on the internet write articles calling you “useless” and “a black hole of talent” (I’m not going to link these!).

I think a lot of people in that situation would have grown to resent their peers. Instead, Minho doubled down on his support for the other members. There is something truly egoless, I think, in how hard he works to care for those around him. Whatever his own insecurities are or might have been, he doesn’t seem to have ever let them get in the way of all the love he has to give.

Of course, Minho doesn’t just show his tender heart in his interactions with the other SHINee members. He’s also endlessly kind to fans. Some of my favorite examples:

When he was a guest on My Last 48 Hours in 2018, the three things he chose to do in his hypothetical last 48 hours were: 1) spend time with family, 2) spend time with SHINee, and 3) spend time with fans. Since there was no time to organize a fanmeet, the producers found just one fan for him to surprise. She started to cry, he got kind of choked up at her crying...it was all too cute for words.

From the letter he wrote to Shawols (SHINee fans) while he was in the military: “As part of the engineering battalion, I’ve received air transportation training. You guys might not know much about it, so to put it simply, our training consists of falling from a plane or a helicopter with a parachute! … I was able to get closer to the sky during training. It was really pretty, and it was great, because I felt like I was looking at you guys.”

...OK, one more quote from the same letter: “I’m reading each and every letter from our SHINee world and I’m treasuring them … Giving your hearts to someone is like giving them your everything, receiving the heart of someone is like receiving all of them and sharing everything with them. I’m really happy that that person is you guys.”

Just the sheer number of times it’s been confirmed he actually reads his fan letters

His Kiseki stage. All of it. It’s maybe the purest expression of Minho to date (his solo stages prior to this were all, like, hip-thrusting to Usher with his shirt off—which, like, fine, I’m not complaining, but the baseball uniform is so much more his style). Every time I rewatch it, I’m just blown away by his sincerity. You can hear it in his voice. Also, I’ll say it: better than the original.

Recently he confessed that he watches fan reaction videos when he can’t sleep (Minhooooo!)

He once spent $21,000 to gift the 800 fans who came to his birthday fanmeet with sweatshirts from his endorsement line (171209). Insane thing to do. When the time comes to eat the rich, I will have no choice but to spare him.

If you’ve never been sucked into the K-Pop Vortex, I know what you’re probably thinking: being kind to fans is part of his job, it doesn’t actually mean anything. And you’re right, it is a part of his job—a part he’s very good at! K-Pop is a fantasy, and entering into a space where you feel seen and appreciated as a fan is a part of that fantasy.

But as a veteran K-Pop Enjoyer, I can tell you that just because something is ‘performative’ doesn’t mean it doesn’t also come from the heart. I also feel that SHINee have worked hard throughout their careers to be true to themselves in public—and to create spaces where they could be closer to fans on their own terms. So it would actually be really unfair to them, I think, to continually insist, against all available evidence, that everything they say and do is somehow calculated. I don’t have any trouble understanding that being an idol is a job, and there are no doubt days when they would rather do anything than talk to fans. But if Minho says that hearing from fans is a part of the job he generally enjoys—and that he cares about us, whether on a personal level or solely in the abstract—I’m inclined to believe him?

I’m cynical about many things, especially in K-Pop, but I just don’t have it in me to be cynical about Minho or SHINee.

I mean, just look at this:

I love him to pieces, and he’s improved a ton, but I’m still not sure he’s that good an actor.

Miscellaneous reasons

I’ve always felt that the extent to which Minho is openly adored by his industry juniors and seniors, as well as by his non-celebrity friends, speaks for itself. His friendship with TVXQ’s Changmin is especially cute (they even had a dating scandal together!).

He’s famously close with SNSD (so much so that Korean netizens nicknamed him “A male idol that people don't get suspicious when he's close to female idols”) and was even the first person to congratulate Taeyeon on the release of “I Call You” in 2020.

He is unfailingly gentle with children—one of only, like, two members who had any business taking care of a toddler on SHINee’s Hello Baby in 2010

He majored in film at Konkuk University and recently said that his “favorite Netflix show” is The Irishman. He also apparently liked Hirokazu Kore’eda’s Our Little Sister? With teasers for his solo album leaning in a moody, ‘90s neo-noir direction, many are speculating that a new cinephile Minho era may be upon us (and by “many” I mean “me”).

He knows how to laugh at himself

Never has been Minho been cuter than while walking through the London Underground on SHINee’s One Fine Day in 2013.

This took a long time, but you did ask me all the questions so I feel like I get a pass for that.

Under a cut, because this is long.

1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting?

Garamond. I think I read somewhere that it’s like, a good one for people to read, and I’ve just never moved away from it. I like it.

2. If you had to give up your keyboard and write your stories exclusively by hand, could you do it? If you already write everything by hand, a) are you a wizard and b) pen or pencil?

Oh god no. I edit and change my mind far too much, and I type much faster than I could ever write by hand. I’d end up getting a typewriter or a Dictaphone instead.

3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?

I tend to write my first drafts on my tablet downstairs. It’s mostly just a skeleton for a plot, and then I edit upstairs on my desktop computer, in like, total silence so I can concentrate. That’s where I flesh out all the stuff I’ve written, and it goes from a draft to a proper story.

4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?

Silhouette. Or manoeuvre. Or camouflage. I spelt two of them wrong, because they are Evil Words.

5. Do you have any writing superstitions? What are they and why are they 100% true?

I dunno, I don’t think I’ve ever thought about it. Probably not?

6. What is your darkest fear about writing?

That I’m honestly just writing the same thing over and over, with different characters. Even if the story’s different, that the message is the same. Or that my writing’s like, hollow – it’s just a story, and it doesn’t have a message at all outside of that. Which is fine, obviously, not every piece of writing has to have some Big Meaning behind it, but. Yeah.

7. What is your deepest joy about writing?

Re-reading something I wrote and haven’t read for a while and going ‘I did that’. Even better if I can go ‘I did that and it’s just as good now as I thought it was when I wrote it’.

8. If you had to write an entire story without either action or dialogue, which would you choose and how would it go?

Action. I could probably write like a pure love story, Love, Simon-esque. But no dialogue would be very hard.

9. Do you believe in ghosts? This isn’t about writing I just wanna know

Yeah, absolutely.

10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?

Not a specific piece of writing but when I write a metaphor and I’m like ‘I’ve used this before’ and I know for a fact that I have but I can’t remember where, which feeds back into that whole ‘all I’m doing is writing the same thing over and over again’ thing, that haunts me a lot. Haunted by my own narrative.

11. Do you believe in the old advice to “kill your darlings?” Are you a ruthless darling assassin? What happens to the darlings you murder? Do you have a darling graveyard? Do you grieve?

I don’t think it always applies, but definitely sometimes. I don’t like doing it, obviously, because it’s Murder, but sometimes trying to make three paragraphs work because you really like one sentence just isn’t the way to go. I don’t save them, they just get deleted and I’ll cry a little bit.

12. If a genie offered you three writing wishes, what would they be? Btw if you wish for more wishes the genie turns all your current WIPs into Lorem Ipsum, I don’t make the rules

Being able to type without ever misspelling a word again. The amount of times I misspell shit and have to go back and change it, I could probably have written twice as many words.

The ability to have Fresh Eyes right away. I tend to write in the morning/afternoon then step away from it and edit in the evenings, but sometimes it’d be nice to just be able to edit right away.

Maybe like, the ability to just stop myself from being so fucking critical about my writing, that’d be nice.

13. What is a subject matter that is incredibly difficult for you write about? What is easy?

I dunno, I don’t think I write things that are hard for me, like, on purpose? Maybe that’s not pushing myself, I guess, but. I tend to worry that when I introduce problems, especially relationship problems, I solve them too quickly and easily? Maybe that’s it.

Melodrama’s easy for me, because I love it. Stupid sweeping sentences and ridiculous descriptions and big explosive set-pieces. That’s my shit.

14. Do you lend your books to people? Are people scared to borrow books from you? Do you know exactly where all your “lost” books are and which specific friend from school you haven’t seen in twelve years still possesses them? Will you ever get them back?

Yes, yes, yes, and no, in that order. I’m very particular about my books, I don’t like them being damaged, so I’m happy to lend them to people, but they have to understand that they have to look after them.

15. Do you write in the margins of your books? Dog-ear your pages? Read in the bath? Why or why not? Do you judge people who do these things? Can we still be friends?

Dear god no. I don’t judge people who do any of those things, just don’t do them with my books. We can still be friends, Quiz. But you’re on thin ice.

16. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever used as a bookmark?

Oh probably food. I think I used one of those liquorice straws covered in sugar once, and had sugar stuck in the spine of the book forever after. I definitely try not to do that any more lol. This always reminds me of that post where the guy used a slice of cheese.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

Ooh, good question. I don’t think I’ve worked out all of that stuff either, so it’s hard to say. I think most of it’s explicit? Or it will be when I finish it.

18. Choose a passage from your writing. Tell me about the backstory of this moment. How you came up with it, how it changed from start to end. Spicy addition: Questioner provides the passage.

Ok, not a passage, but there’s like two chapters in the middle of A Pack Of Two that I wrote when I was right at the end of the story. I didn’t know how the story was supposed to end, not really – like I knew I wanted a happy ending and stuff but I didn’t know how to get there, so I went back and wrote these nice fluffy chapters where Steve and Eddie did some fun things together that added a little conflict and fleshed out how they felt about each a bit more, and by the time I’d finished them, I knew how I wanted the story to end properly. So sometimes, going back on yourself can be helpful.

19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?

I guess I’ve always written fanfic, even if it never really went anywhere. I had some stories on an old comic book forum, there was some Spider-Man, Runaways, Green Lantern, and Thunderbolts that I remember.

Then I did my first x Reader insert thing for Teen Wolf, and that took on a life of its own. I really liked the whole idea of adding a new character to continuity, like dancing between the raindrops so you can get your own character in there without changing the original narrative. That was what kept me writing for a bit, I did a Krypton one and a Stargirl one too. Oh and a Zombies one, nearly forgot that.

And somewhere in there, I started doing NaNoWriMo – my mum suggested something to me once, about writing a story I wanted to read because I didn’t find it on a shelf, and that was where I got my first three novels, The Ormere Chronicles, from.

I also wrote my High Fantasy book, Shall Set You Free, and then my Terry Pratchett-esque book, Death Vs. The Zombie Apocalypse (which I think is still my best book, tbh).

When the pandemic hit, that was when I started writing my Lovecraft stuff, because it was fucking depressing. I’ve still gotta finish those, I’m like 1/3 of the way through the final book.

And since like, July of last year, I’ve been writing Stranger Things fanfic pretty much non-stop, which is probably the most consistently I’ve written for a long time, and I like that.

In terms of where I’m going, I don’t really know. I’m writing stories I like writing, about things I like, and I’m gonna keep doing that. I hope I don’t ever stop, honestly.

20. If a witch offered you the choice between eternal happiness with your one true love and the ability to finally finish, perfect, and publish your dearest, darlingest, most precious WIP in exactly the way you’ve always imagined it — which would you choose? You can’t have both sorry, life’s a bitch

Oh, probably the first one. I’m never entirely happy with what I write, and I think having one perfect piece of writing and then not being able to live up to that for the rest of my life would be so depressing. I’d rather have 50 nearly perfect bits of writing (and my true love) than 1 flawless one.

21. Could you ever quit writing? Do you ever wish you could? Why or why not?

I hope not? I can go a long time without doing it sometimes, but I don’t think I could ever out and out stop. I don’t feel like it’s a chore, so I don’t wish I could stop, no. It’s fun, and while it’d be nice to like, make a career out of it, I enjoy it too much to really want to monetize it.

Or y’know, I’m too scared to try, but we won’t talk about that.

22. How organized are you with your writing? Describe to me your organization method, if it exists. What tools do you use? Notebooks? Binders? Apps? The Cloud?

Notes-wise, I tend to write a lot of stuff down on paper to start with when I’m getting the story in order, and then transpose them into a Word doc.

I then proceed to basically ignore said Word doc, write the story, and then check the notes at the end and laugh at how close/far away I was from what I’d intended.

23. Describe the physical environment in which you write. Be as detailed as possible. Tell me what’s around you as you work. Paint me a picture.

It’s either a dining table with a tablet on it, usually with a mug of hot chocolate and/or something to snack on, or my desk upstairs that’s full of the usual desk things, nothing particularly special. I don’t think I’m interesting enough for this question.

24. How much prep work do you put into your stories? What does that look like for you? Do you enjoy this part or do you just want to get on with it?

I let the ideas percolate for a while. I don’t need a whole beginning/middle/end before I start writing, but I like to have the big beats, like the Point of what I’m writing, rather than just totally winging it. I tried that once, and it failed miserably.

It’s a lot of thinking, and then writing notes. If I get stuck, I try and go for a walk or do some kind of activity where I can’t do anything but think about my story, so my brain can sort out any problems or connect the dots that I can’t connect usually.

I don’t mind this part, but I definitely prefer the actual writing bit.

25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?

In my head, Alicia from The Ormere Chronicles literally looks like “If River Song Was Black”. I don’t know if that’s like, explicit in the text, but it is now.

26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?

Writing fanfic, it’s easier, because I can just rewatch the shows or whatever that I’m basing things on. I like doing that to get their voices down properly, so at least they sound right when I write them. I read all my dialogue over a few times, sometimes out loud, to make sure it sounds natural, and like what they’d actually say.

For my original characters, it’s a lot of ‘what would X do in this situation’ kind of conversations with myself. Once I’m in, I try and stay there until the story’s done – I only work on one WIP at a time, usually.

27. Who is the most stressful character you’ve ever written? Why?

Oh god, probably some of the insufferable characters from Death Vs. The Zombie Apocalypse, like the whole point of them was to be horrible representations of human beings, but I think maybe I was a little too good at that. Read into that what you will.

28. Who is the most delightful character you’ve ever written? Why?

This question was really sticking for me, until I remembered, there’s a character in the Ormere Chronicles, the third book of the three, who is literally my nan. She passed away before she could read any of my books, but she’s a character in one of them who’s in a bus station at two separate points, and she meets the two main characters who missed each other, and she talks them through their problems so that they can reunite.

I don’t think I realised why I did that until now, including her because she couldn’t read them before she died. Oh, now I’m sad.

29. Where do you draw your inspiration? What do you do when the inspiration well runs dry?

That’s a good question. With fanfic, it’s usually ‘I want to write these characters in this kind of situation’, and the situation is one I’ve seen in other media, like transposing them from their universe to another. Or with x Reader stuff, it’s ‘I want to be in this situation with this character’ which is entirely self-indulgent and I love it.

For original stuff, I like to pick a genre, and then go from there, that’s my starting point that dictates the characters, setting, and such.

30. Talk to me about the role dreams play in your writing life. Have you ever used material from your dreams in your writing? Have you ever written in a dream? Did you remember it when you woke up?

I barely ever remember my dreams after I wake up, so I don’t have much to say on this one. I’ve used dreams a few times in my writing, to be like prophetic or to help put things into perspective for my characters, that’s about it.

31. Write a short love letter to your readers.

I always sign off my fics with “I hope you had as much reading this as I did writing it”, which I think sums up how I feel about my readers, honestly.

32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?

I honestly don’t read a lot of other people’s fanfic, because I have this weird thing of not wanting to write things that other people have written, so if I don’t know that they’ve written them, then I can’t have copied them, if that makes sense?

33. Do you practice any other art besides writing? Does that art ever tie into your writing, or is it entirely separate?

Nah, writing’s my expression. I am art.txt, not art.jpeg, as the meme goes.

34. Thoughts on the Oxford comma, Go:

Yes, love it, best comma. All the commas.

35. What’s your favorite writing rule to smash into smithereens?

Starting sentences with prepositions, probably. Because I can. And I will. Sometimes it’s just necessary.

36. They say to Write What You Know. Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is terrible advice…what do you Know?

Closeted/confused queer boy finds himself. Anything more than that is usually veering into the Things I Wish I Knew category.

37. If you were to be remembered only by the words you’ve put on the page, what would future historians think of you?

God, he wrote a lot about those dudes from Stranger Things falling in love, didn’t he?

38. What is something about your writing process YOU think is Really Weird? If you are comfortable, please share. If you’re not comfortable, what do you think cats say about us?

I have this odd hang-up with sex scenes that I’m trying to get around. I have been writing more of them, and getting more comfortable with them, but a lot of my sex scenes are very much metaphor and inference rather than ‘he put his dick in his ass’, because it feels really weird to me to never mention sexual stuff until The Sex Chapter, and then it’s all dicks and shit. But I’m working on it.

39. What keeps you writing when you feel like giving up?

Re-reading my own stuff, and knowing that a) I did that, b) I can do that again, and c) I can do better than that now. Reminding myself what I’ve accomplished already and what I can do in the future.

And reminding myself that, at the end of the day, everything I write is for me first.

I know I’ve had similar experience in feeling as though my work wouldn’t meet expectations, but i believe that it’s important to push through and then learn from the experience. It’s only a failure if we don’t learn something, right? I always like to celebrate any win, regardless of size. Maybe I didn’t finish a goal for the day, but I did manage to get that automation to work by trying some coding I’d never done before so I still came out on top since I learned something. We can be our own harshest critics, so what view as flaws may not be seen that way by the end user (and likely won’t even be noticed unless it crashes the game), so try to change your perspective or seek outside review.

HOW STRICTLY DO YOU FOLLOW CANON?

I try my best to follow canon as best as possible. I do put in my own twists here and there. I have added things into his character have been shared later on through Tweets on Twitter from Jro and Milne. I take their portrayals and incorporate them into my Tarn. For example, Milne said that Tarn was Pharma’s new lover and they had a special relationship and since I’m weak for that pairing I really wanted to incorporate that in. Also Red doesn’t help we both feed into each other ilu <3 ALL IN ALL though, I do like to keep him canon and not too much off character to where he isn’t Tarn anymore. I want him to be Tarn not someone else

SELL YOUR MUSE! (aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutual.)

I could sell Tarn for hours and a few friends know this very personally. IM SORRY. ANYWAYS. Some may find what I love about Tarn to not what they like but it’s my opinion on him! So here goes.

I love his damaged nature (I’m sorry Tarn muse). I find his addictions interesting, even though they weren’t technically shown in the issues. It’s part of who he is from who he used to be (however they came about). I will always love his flaws and I enjoy showing those sides of him so be aware that I will show his addictive personality (through Transformation, Nuke abuse, and murderous tendencies).

Which brings me to... His murderous/torturous nature. We see killers a dime a dozen in the series but to be a leader of a torturous group? Like that’s pretty rad and completely different from a lot of other characters. Can you tell I like the baddies? sdifhoisdf This brings up this ONE side of him. He doesn’t like killing / taking part in the demises of SOME of their victims. Why? I think I may know the answer to that. Why does a mech like him want to advert his gaze while the others have their way with them. Talk about something deep we never got to understand that.

He has a soft spot for musical pieces, especially classical piano music. I love Chopin the most, so you’ll see me post that all the time!

He apparently loves pineapples and just I LOVE THAT SO MUCH UHG.

He’s a big tank with Daddy (Megatron) Issues! You gotta love it LOL He’s got biolights literally everywhere. FLASHY

When he’s only around his team, he can be a little bit more calm even though he can drop it at the drop of a dime.

He’s a touch starved mech odifhsodif

NOW THE OPPOSITE! (list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?)

Even though I kinda sold him on this I thought I should mention it here too. I don’t think people find him interesting for how dark he is as a mech. Push aside everything and look at how purely evil he can be. He’s cruel. He’s torturous and very sadistic. He will thrive off of every little bit of pain you give him. He can be manipulative at times.

Tarn is a huge hypocrite. It shows so much throughout the comic issues if you really look at it. I show it a lot (he will deny it sometimes but don’t worry I know he’s one) Probably one of the biggest hypocrites in the whole 2005 IDW Series.

Tarn is easily-influenced and persuaded by certain situations (to not look weak) and mechs.

He is very easily angered from the smallest things.

He holds onto grudges

I started rp’ing him on here as soon as he debuted in the MTMTE series (i think it was back in 2013 or 2012?) I did kind of poof for a few years due to being so busy sdiufhs. Anyways, I fell instantly in love with his character. I loved his dark ways and how he was so drastically different of a villain. His musical tendencies. And how he could offline a mech with ONLY his voice? Like damn sing to me all day you Musical Angel. He is dark and mysterious. NOT TO MENTION, black and purple my favorite colors.

His design was flawless and MTMTE #7 sold me on who he was and from then on I just couldn’t stop loving this murderous tank. I love how Jro and Milne have come out later on to answer more questions about him and just I love him that much more. Looking back years later on it, I see a little bit of myself in him.

WHAT KEEPS YOUR INSPIRATION

He’s pretty easy to flow out honestly. Just like my other muse I have. If he does struggle some, I just pop on some Chopin and he’s good to go. What really does keep me going more than anything is continuously exploring who he is as a mech and as a Decepticon. I want to know so much about him literally everything. Even though I could write headcanons all day and drabbles too, I love making him interact with others to find that personality. It’s really just my never-ending curiosity for him.

DO YOU ACCEPT CRITICISM WELL ABOUT YOUR PORTRAYAL?

Only if its constructive criticism. I love it when friends bounce ideas or talk to me about him. I will take into consideration of changing him slightly from only my close friends and that’s because we’re close. I will not change my character for anyone because they don’t like how I portray him because he is my portrayal of him, not yours.

DO YOU LIKE QUESTIONS, WHICH HELP YOU EXPLORE YOUR CHARACTER?

I love all the questions you all send him, either on anon or not. Even the most awful ones! Tarn may not like them but most I find absolutely hilarious. I think the more personal questions really help for exploring who he is or if I post drabble prompts, go ahead and send me one! Even if I dont send in one and you wanna know more about him I will try my best to respond to it.

IF SOMEONE DISAGREES TO A HEADCANON OF YOURS, DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY?

This is a hit or miss question. I don’t really want to exactly know why unless if I ask you personally on it (which is usually just between close friends because sometimes I just aint thinkin straight). I don’t mind bouncing off ideas but ishdfoisdfh i really truly don’t know the answer to this one

IF SOMEONE REALLY HATES YOUR CHARACTER, HOW DO YOU TAKE IT?

I honestly don’t care. People won’t like every character out there and that’s just part of being human. I understand why people would hate his character in the series in all honesty. But I love him for all his flaws.

I don’t blame people for hating Tarn but I do not want hate sent to me. That is unacceptable and not okay. You don’t have to like my portrayal but please don’t shove it at me that’s just uncalled for. If your character hates him that’s totally different but don’t come attacking me for any reason.

DO YOU THINK YOU ARE EASY GOING AS A MUN?

I think I am. I’m usually fairly quiet. But once you get to know me, I am kinda strong on the goofy/funny side and a bit blunt/straight-forward sdoifhodsf. I tend to be really easy going and laid back. My personality has drastically changed since I’ve gotten into my mid-20s. I don’t like drama and dont wanna be apart of it.

Seth, as well as Lisa, turn around, to see Marina giving an enthusiastic thumbs-up to her sound engineer. Seth replies with a thumbs-down, to which Marina shakes her head. Seth and Lisa turn back around. "What was that?" Lisa asks. "Dunno." Seth shrugs, and the two of them continue walking towards Lisa's place. [bandori 'five minutes later' introduction card] "-So I guess there were some hitches with Kasumi's vocals at the end, but I think that's 'cause I set the gain too high and just forgot to change it. Like- their vocals all go into separate channels, so there's no way I would've, like, turned it up for Rimi's part and forgot to have changed it, but, like, who knows." "I'm glad it went well, though. Didja have fun?" "Oh- yeah, of course. I'm kinda sad you weren't able to be there for Initial. it was fuckin' great." "I know, right? I remember hearing it when you drove me to school the other day. Which, by the way- thank you." "Oh, no problem. And Garret says I drive the Slowbalt..." Seth sighs, remembering how the two of them still arrived to school at eight despite Lisa saying she was running over that morning. Lisa laughs, and the two of them continue walking until Lisa pipes up as they reach her house. "Um, Seth?" Lisa stops walking, and Seth follows suit. "Yeah?" "Can we talk? It's nothing bad, I promise." "Huh? Yeah, sure. What's poppin'?" "Well... Yukina might get mad at me for doing this, but... I really like you. And I was wondering... if you wanted to be my boyfriend?" "Uh- I mean- I, uh- hm." "Sorry." "No, no! I just- I don't want to get you kicked out of Roselia. Because I know they mean a lot to you, and I didn't know how Yukina would react, and... you really care about me that much?" "Of course I do, or else I wouldn't have asked." "I... do want to be your boyfriend, Lisa. I love you." Lisa flashes a bright smile at Seth. "I love you too."

ok so this will be for ungodly hours!

FIRST LOOK

1. describe your novel in 1-2 sentences (elevator pitch).

a criminal, the prime minister’s daughter, and a demi-god race against time (wink wink) to piece together the scattered soul of a powerful magician

2. How long do you plan for your novel to be? (Is it a novella, single book, book series, etc.)

unlike my other wips it’s planned to be a standalone (unless i miss the characters and think of a new adventure for them to go on).

3. What is your novel’s aesthetic?

vibrant colors, different art movements (esp impressionism, abstract, and social realism) old clockwork, empty alleys, glass houses

4. What other stories inspire your novel

the first one that comes to mind is the kdrama tomorrow with you which made me a lil interested in time travel again and about the consequences of it. also the shades of magic series with the idea of different worlds, however ungodly hours is more of timelines that began at a singular point and diverged at different periods of time to create the world that it is

MAIN CHARACTER

6. Who is your protagonist?

bishop aka our criminal

7. Who is their closest ally?

it was ivan his childhood friend (who he also had to betray early on in the novel sad face), but jane soon fills that void and become almost like extensions of each other

8. Who is their enemy?

the main enemy would be stoker, the head of the pseudo orphanage/crime organization that forced bishop into being her hound and living this lifestyle that goes against everything he believes him. even when he visits the other timelines, he can still feel the hold she has on him.

9. What do they want more than anything?

he really just wants freedom to live the way he wants, to get away from stoker and from the town that fears him. during the time where bishop florence was his guardian, he was really encouraged to pursue his gift for painting so he created this idea of living away from the big city, taking each day one at a time, and painting as much as his heart desires, but as the years goes on that dream seems further out of reach

10. Why can’t they have it?

stoker pretty much owns him and his life. he tries to work off his debt to her but it’s just never enough and if he were to run away he would be hunted down and killed

11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves?

he views himself as the villain of his story and that he’s undeserving of good things. but even though he forced to do these awful things he cares so deeply about everyone and everything

12. Draw your protagonist! (Or share a description)

he’s v v tall, black hair, v dark brown eyes. he has a long scar on his cheek from a run in with one of the magistrate’s goons. he wears this realllly old worn coat with sewn in patches and a cross necklace both given to him by bishop florence before he died.

PLOT POINTS

13. What is the internal conflict?

there’s actually three stages of the novel that correspond with the three characters of the novels. the first is jane and her need to belong, the second is werner fulfilling expectations, and the third goes back to how bishop sees himself as the villain and treating himself as one, and consequently the lack of self worth that comes with it.

14. What is the external conflict?

stoker, the magistrate aka our powerful magician, and werner’s dad aka father time all chasing after them lmao

15. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protagonist?

that he’d be condemned to continue to live as stoker’s hound or to be the cause of his friends’ (esp jane) death/accidental obliteration from the three timelines

16. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story?

there’s two actually. 1. they see very very familiar faces in these timelines, and 2. the magistrate had more power originally than he let on

17. Do you know how it ends?

yes and it’s v bittersweet

18. What is the theme?

um acceptance is huge. also despite the time travelling, time isn’t going to stop and wait for you. and with that is the concept of personal destinies and the paths that you have to take ???

19. What is a recurring symbol?

not to be like obvious, but clocks.

20. Where is the story set? (Share a description!)

the first is drona, the capital city and the home of stoker’s crime syndicate and the prime minister. it’s a pretty grey town, lots of brick and the empty lot that was formerly the beautiful cathedral that burned down. the other 3 are wyn (one of the timelines that embodies like abstract paintings with the colors and the avant garde fashion), yune (a timeline in black and white where a cult is in power), and su (the land of the gods, and werner’s home)

21. Do you have any images or scenes in your mind already?

there’s two that come to mind, 1 is jane’s run in with the cult and her accidentally taking part of one of their rituals and another is this mirror maze in a fortune teller’s tent

22. What excited you about this story?

originally the protagonist was werner and he was created after reading all these like stories of gods that were super powerful and i just wanted to make one that was v clumsy and dorky and just not what you would expect of him. also thinking about these worlds and how different they are, idk it’s really cool to me

23. Tell us about your usual writing method?

um lots of outlining and character/world profiles that are longer than the actual draft itself. opening the doc and staring at it for a long time and only writing a sentence lmao. but for u know actually writing, it’s writing a v shitty rough draft written at like 4am where i’m too tired to criticize it and then looking over it again when i wake up to make changes.
