It's kind of weird how Girl Genius took a sharp turn from "Steampunk sci-fi fantasy" to "wizards, everyone's a wizard", huh?

that was kinda always the vibe? there's not that much difference between a mad scientist and wizard, when you think about it. GG was never particularly hard sci-fi, and building a clank army out of circus tents isn't that much less impossible than a timestop scepter.

this stuff with queens and flames and general harnessing-the-powers-of-the-cosmos is, like... it's goofy, but they're not trying to be like, "oh, this is so mystical and beyond the ken of man". it's like "oh, this is how you do crazy wizard shit at the atomic scale with nothing but my mind. one more trick in the toolbox. got it." i don't really mind it! it's kind of like the natural endpoint of this kind of thing.

...that said, while sure, it's the natural endpoint of this sort of thing, the story doesn't seem to want to go anywhere near an endpoint, so i think they might've kinda jumped the gun on the powerscaling escalation.

if they take this return-to-Mechanicsburg arc and wrap the story up here, finally paying off the time travel portal mystery they set up back on like page four and earning that Agatha-wins happy ending they keep doing omake flash-forwards to, i think i'll be basically happy with the pace of escalation. if this is just one more stop on an interminable pan-european tour of new and more magical threats... i dunno.
