CR3 92 -- A list. Spoilers? I guess.
So I normally watch the first hour or so of CR and then go to bed, because time zone and work in the morning, but of course, I had to watch ALL of it last week and by the end, I was so sleepy that I vowed to rewatch it on Friday. Then my dog got into a fight with a raccoon, and we ended up at the emergency vet at 2am (he's fine now). I realized I hadn't finished watching Kymal, so I had to go watch that, and I didn't get back to rewatching the ep until yesterday/today.
1. The growth of Aimee fucking Carrero as a player. Love it so much.
2. Aabria Iyengar is perfect. No notes needed.
3. It’s so fun to watch Matt be one part tactician 2 parts himbo.
4. Robbie is absolutely coming back to the main table. He said Dorian feels like he needs a purpose, but he’s the only Crownkeeper who isn’t favored by a god.

I am given to believe, although I’ve not seen anything much due to Tumblr’s wonderful curation model, that some folk are complaining about CR 3 ep 33.
And I just have to say that I’m sorry for all those folk who aren’t having a good time.
Because I am having an AMAZING time. Like, there is something fantastic about realising that you are the target audience, and babes, I am right in the firing line for this one.
Over the last few days I have been VIBRATING. I am THRIVING. Every day I watch the end of the episode around 10 times at the least and love it more every single time - eating up the expressions, the breathing, the gasps, the body acting. It hurts. It hurts so much but in that wonderful sweet/sour way that good angst has. The ‘is she your favourite’ and Imogen’s breakdown that follows is the MOST satisfying of tropes - of love being spilled out and weaponised, and I am absolutely living for it.
I guess it’s something about how polarising some things are. For me, this is possibly The Best episode of Critical Role I’ve ever seen. The fact it hasn’t left me for four days and counting speaks to that.
I dunno, I don’t really have wisdom about this. I just wanted to share how very very much I am loving this ride, with all it’s attendant pain. I have never longed for Thursday to come more than this.
PS - on reflection, the fact that A Crown of Candy is by far my favourite Dimension 20 show probably says something about my nature and what really floats my boat. I write fluff, I LIVE for angst. That’s how it goes.

The texture sculpted into this model is impressive. All the scales and folds make this simple creature design a more interesting mini. I am quite curious about the monster this cloaker miniature represents, the skirath hunter. What’s their deal? Why are they attacking skyships? Were they maybe drawn to Bells Hells for some reason?
Skirath Hunter Eberron: Rising from the Last War #26 Cloaker
So I thought for sure this cloaker had cutesy lil’ trex arms holding lil’ daggers, but those are apparently mandibles are something. Furthermore, I’ve made another discovery, the name cloaker is very literal as these monsters have a false appearance ability to look like a literal cloak. What an incredibly specific ambush technique.
Next time you retrieve a jacket from your hallway closet, remember that a closet can be its own dungeon crawl. A one room, one combat 1x1 inch grid square dungeon crawl. No wait- the cloaker is a large creature, that wouldn’t even work. Since the cloaker is a 2x2 large creature, that means it measures approximately 10 by 10 feet in size! So like, they use their false appearance to look like a MASSIVE cloak? 10 by 10 feet, that’s not a cloak, that’s a circus tent. I gotta tell ya, I’m not so sure about this monster concept.
Moving onto the model itself. Not as much sculpt detail as the other cloaker, but the posing is quite good. The way the wings are arranged sells that billowy, floaty sort of vibe that I imagine a cloaker would have. The onscreen model looks a lot greener. Not sure if that’s the result of a repaint or of studio lighting.
The Nonplayer Characters
Xandis Icewind Dale Rime of the Frostmaiden #39 Avarice
This miniature paint job needs a few more colors. The character’s hair, head, and feather collar all just sorta blend together. I didn’t even realize this mini was of a tiefling at first. I thought they were a dragonborn or lizard folk. The color scheme is based directly on the NPC artwork from Rime of the Frost Maiden and I don’t think it translated well into Wizkids miniature form.
Gordi Fangs & Talons #14 Goliath Fighter
“Gordi the Goliath”, love the alliteration, don’t love the mini though. A bit of a wimpy looking goliath with a wimpy looking weapon. Aren’t goliaths supposed to be pretty hulking? This fella looks downright spindly by goliath standards. I dig the face markings though, that is very goliathy.
Terana Critical Role Dwendalian Farmer
Don’t be fooled by the pleasant exterior, this farmer mini is capable and ready to start the peasant revolt! A righteous model for certain. Super useful mini. Like how many villager prepainted minis are there? Not many. How many villager dwarf minis? Basically zero. And what’s even better, is that the farming implement looks vicious enough that this mini easily works as an adventurer mini. Solid paint and great sculpt to boot.
Khalil Benes Waterdeep Dragon Heist #006a Merchant
This model is back, having appeared last campaign as a denizen of Cognouza. Mighty fine merchant model. I like how this character is staring at the scroll in their hand as if to say, “What is this?” He needs a scroll of identify just to identify that scroll!
The Ballista
Ballista Tyranny of Dragons #34 Ballista

Not the most baller of ballistae, but it’s basically bearable. The sculpt and casting mold is kinda lazy. The trigger portion is extra wide for no reason that I can think of other than for ease of manufacturing. And the scaffolding on the bottom should have space between the pieces of wood, but they are just filled in with plastic. Overall, fine for a piece of terrain I suppose.
Closing Thoughts and Predictions
So with a custom vehicle this impressive, I can only assume we will see this skyship again. Not the wildest of predictions. That being said, if this is the only session to feature this ship, I would have such respect for Critical Role and for Matt Mercer. Wow, what a power move that would be. Such a mini flex.

👓 What helps you focus when you write?
My main must is that I can't be Hearing Words, if that makes sense? So no podcast, no chatter, no live CR ep, no new music. I'll usually either put on some soundtrack, or a song that Perfectly matches the vibe on repeat, or a playlist of songs I know by heart that won't distract me. Also a glass of water or coffee on hand to sippy sip, and a feather to stim with while thinking <3 A trick I love is speedwrites - set a timer for 10-15 minutes with a friend and write as much as possible, the peer pressure and competitive spirit really gets things flowing!
(I'll actually be dropping One for sorrow / Two for joy's playlist later ;3 keep an eye out?)
🦋 Which character is your favorite to write?
Beau and Percy are my favs to write! Both can get extremely intelligent and insightful, are hilarious when they panic, deal with trauma in their own fun to write ways (Percy spirals a bit, Beau gets Angry). Percy is fun and trying to be respectable while Beau's inner monolog is a lot more crass and like dialogue, and she reacts very explosively. (I just write Percy more bc Perc'ahlia is my otp and I adore Vex, whereas I like Bashter, Beauyasha and Beaujester a good deal but don't *adore* Yasha n Jes like I do Vex)
😎 What fics do you prefer on a scale of canon compliant to wildly original?
A happy medium of both? I want fics that love canon, if that makes sense: that dig into it deeper and make clever nods to it and respect the characterization of the characters as opposed to ones that say fuck you n do what they want. I appreciate the love and research that goes into having things Fit well, bet it lore/worldbuilding in a missing scene fic or adapting Ripley and her impact on Percy to a modern AU.

hello! i hope you're doing good (especially after today's/yesterday's ep<3). i'm like 10 episodes behind this campaign and sadly i don't have the time to binge watch 10 eps so i wanted to ask is there a quick way to catch up on campaign 3? i know the cr wikis have very detailed synopses of the episodes, do you think that would be enough to read? and maybe if i might start watching the episodes, is there a fight that i should really watch that happened in the past 10 episodes (that you can remember)? i usually skip fights if no one dies or nothing major happens.
I'm not sure as I haven't really skipped large chunks before, but my guess would be that your best bet is Dani Carr's CritRecaps (not animated). You should be able to find them on the CritRole website.

I had initially thought "the Bat is as cowardly as the rest of Monzenbashi; just better at hiding it" based off the similarities between her and Ao/Ranka, but it might be more true than I realized.
I think it's important to note that Monzenbashi was mostly composed of young, inexperienced magical girls who couldn't make it in the Ryuugasaki-Torayamachi war. They're easily intimidated into submission, so the Bat won't have to worry about them getting standoffish. They are also easy to manipulate-- after all, their weakness puts them at risk of being attacked by rival gangs. How fortunate they are to have a strong veteran magical girl (the Bat) around to protect them, right?
The Bat can prey on their inexperience to keep them in her debt, getting them to provide her with grief seeds in exchange for their safety. And if they let her down too many times, well... they won't be hard to dispatch.
The gang's victims (a category that includes its own members) are largely shown to be young or weak magical girls, too. From a survival standpoint, it makes sense-- weak girls are easier to cull to solve the magical girl-to-grief seed ratio problem, as well as easier to rob.
(Whether that's completely cowardice or a mix of cowardice + the Bat playing it smart is up for debate. Experienced magical girls are tougher opponents; the risk/reward balance isn't as appealing. On the other hand, while targeting a scared 7th grader who just made her contract 2 months ago may be morally reprehensible, it's basically a guaranteed win. To the Bat, who's desperate to survive in a witch drought like Futatsugi's, why fight fair when picking off scrubs gets you free grief seeds?)
Back when she planned on usurping Juri and taking over Futatsugi in CR, she tried to rope Ao into helping her. She wasn't gonna fight Juri alone. We know that she can take on stronger opponents- she shielded Ranka and the others from danger, after all- but it doesn't seem to be something she's especially comfortable with. Combined with how her thought process was "I have to be the one in control or I'll be the one getting hurt"... hm. She strikes me as being quite insecure underneath her viciousness.
Something curious I noticed the other day is that we hardly ever see the Bat get into fights alone. Even when she's the one doing the killing, she almost always has Ranka and/or some underlings backing her up.

Like. This happens a lot. There's no way it's coincidental at this point, right?
(top 2: Ao's MSS; bottom 2: CR Juri ep.10. as an aside, it's mentioned in the CR flashback here that there are 4 other Monzenbashi members present, aside from the Bat, Ranka, and Ao.)
The only time we see her get into something on her own is in CR's Ao ep.3, where Ao attacks her to try to keep her away from Janomiya's base. And even then, the Bat says "Come on, I don't want to fight with you." They end up getting into an altercation anyway when Ao refuses to team up with the Bat, but still, I find it interesting that the Bat tried to weasel her way out of having to 1v1 someone.
Like Ao, she's determined to never fall victim to exploitation, and covers this up with a tough face-- but unlike Ao, it's not a mask anymore; she's perfectly capable of killing people if she has to. Like Ranka, she's well aware that what she's doing is a necessary evil-- but unlike Ranka, she refuses to feel bad about doing horrible things to protect herself.
It's sort of ironic that for as much as Ao and Ranka have spoken about being used by the strong, the Bat is, in a way, just as "weak" as they are. But since she's reshaped her paranoia into violence, nobody suspects a thing.
It makes for such a good "cycle of abuse" narrative that melds excellently with Ao/Ranka's character development throughout the rest of the story, ahh. We may not see much of Monzenbashi, but I love digging into the scars that the Bat's own fear left behind.

New season of Vox Machina has dropped, 3 episodes are out, here is my review:
(Yes, I’m a bad indie RPG designer and don’t hate CR with a burning vendetta, sue me)
Ep 1 - pretty good! lots of carnage & destruction. I too enjoy Kaiju movies. Also, the CGI dragons have improved from laughably awful to nearly consistent with the broader art style.
Ep 2 - deeply, deeply *mid*. We've seen far better "this fight is a fight of the soul" sequences from this show, and recently (it was literally only two episodes ago). Existential shit-talking doesn’t feel like consistent characterization, and the split focus feels weird. Visuals were alright.
Ep 3 - starts mid, I’ve never seen PCs so fucking stupid, very funny to hear goofy-ass New Lore Names being used to avoid WOTC lawsuits. Some neat visuals; emotional sub-plot was undercut. Great ending tho! 7/10

ComicBook.com: So what was it like to get to participate in all of the pre-game skits? To be honest, I love watching the actual Critical Role campaign, but I think the skits in the first 10 minutes of the shows are always my favorite part.
Robbie Daymond: Yeah, that's wild, right? That's a unique to Critical Role sort of pre-show that you don't see many other places do. It was fun, man. It's like the wild, wild west! Like, they just threw stuff at me. And I think that they gave me a few softballs right off the bat and then they were like, "Oh, he can play, let's go."
So it evolved from being, "Hey, here's a script, think about it. You've got 10 minutes before we record this." And then it got to the point where the night before Sam says, "Hey, I wrote this like Dave Matthews thing, you can play guitar right?" And I was like "Uh, okay." When I get there, and they're like, "OK, here's the loosely-based script that we're going to do, but basically we're just going to wing it." And you just go, "All right, well, hope you got your play hat on today, cause its going to get weird." It was super fun.

there is something so precious (as in beautifully rare) about the way Zerxus treats Asmodeus. yes i understand that canonically Asmodeus is a Capital M Manipulator and that this is likely still canon in Exandrian lore, but what a brilliant way to show that Zerxus' compassion is literally limitless.
is it worth losing your humanity just to spare yourself the shame of others calling you stupid for your kindness?

i understand that people unfamiliar with CR are celebrating keyleth saying 'not yet' to vax as if its some kind of comeuppance against male audacity but no no no no you don't understand, vaxleth is so important to me because kiki said 'not yet' and vax said 'okay.'

i love how much love they're animating into vax. that was a character that so many people underestimated and just tagged as 'sad boi' because of how his story ends but so few remembered how full of warmth and charm and softness vax was. he was goofy and protective and wanted the best for his sister and fell a little bit in love with every person he met. i'm so happy i can still see that in the animation version of him.

The great thing about the legends of vox machina series is while the story will be the same it wont be verbatim the live stream. Like how when you finish a book series that’s it, there’s never a new scene with those characters, you never learn anything new about them, theres nothing new to experience with them. But this will be like we get to see our fav characters again in a brand new story but also we know how the story will go.
Or I guess it’s like a book to tv series adaptation if the book was written by multiple authors who are also playing the characters in the tv series.
What I’m saying is I’m VERY excited

Kudos to Brennans acting cause in the second episode when they visit the oracles and Zerxus has that conversation with Asmodeus and Z says “promise you won’t forget me” and Asmodeus responds “oh, I won’t forget you”. Brennan had just enough of an edge in his tone I had a red flag pop up like, wait was that a threat..? But then he played Asmodeus as going back to soft and gentle and in awe of Zerxus. Lulled us right back to where he wanted us.
He really had me thinking this betrayer god might be misunderstood but he left a nice bit of foreshadowing to lead right up to that reveal with the line “and I did nothing wrong” *chefs kiss*

I cannot get the “if you look down and see the stars, what will you see if you look up” line out of my head. What a beautifully terrifying, dream-horror moment. Just *chefs kiss* I aspire to be able to write something so perfect, so on theme, and the TIMING followed by “you see the ground. And it is fast approaching” just chills, bravo

I’ve realized what it is about Brennan Lee Mulligans DMing style that I like so much. Its the way he handles exposition. He is a master at showing, not telling and he does that with all his lore drop exposition moments. Best example so far is…

When Xerxus gets that nat 20 religion check on Vespins body. Brennan could have just said “you realize he’s a cleric of a betrayer god and he was used to death by that god”. Nice, to the point exposition.
No, instead he tells a story, first setting down the logic behind a cleric slowly gaining more power, and that it would be bad if a god gave a cleric too much at once. Then he describes the logic behind the betrayer gods choices, that the betrayer god might not care about their followers so much. And that allows his players to add those two things together to realize and really understand exactly what happened to Vespin to be in the state he is.
Its just perfectly done! What an amazing story teller he is to be able to provide a lore drop with so much emotion behind it. And to provide his players that experience of dawning realization and horror that your character, if they were a real person, would experience on having that same epiphany.
How does he do that? Is that all off the cuff, improv? Does he write or at least plan some of this stuff out beforehand? How do I do that, cause man oh man I want to do that. That’s so much fun as a DM and as a player.
