Go Back Couple/Couple on the Backtrack, Why Every Couple Here is Great and Why The Secondary Love Interests Add Well to The Story
Part 1 because of image limit.
Tumblr media
Go Back Couple is a korean drama uniquely about a divorced couple getting sent back in time to fix their mistakes and redo their regrets.
The main characters are Ma Jin-joo and Choi Ban-do.
Tumblr media
The introduction to the story was honestly great. I got more invested when this lovely wedding happened. Look at them!!!
Tumblr media
The first thing I knew about Jin-joo and Ban-do was that they're very happy and easy-going with each other. Ban-do is silly, energetic and a little awkward. His father-in-law didn't seem to like him, unlike his mother-in-law who was so fond of him from the look on her face alone. Jin-joo was obviously smitten.
The hard cut from them walking out from their wedding to them walking out of a divorce courthouse just made me raise my eyebrows. Like that was such a stark contrast.
The episode goes into further detail about what their life was like after around 18 years of marriage. They were tired and miserable and of course, they were taking it out on each other. I wish I could show more pictures but google and netflix hate me so just take my word for it when I say these two are some of the pettiest, rudest people I've had the second-hand embarassment of watching. Jin-joo dumped Ban-do's work journal into the sink after he forgot to get her an anniversary present. Ban-do was being rude to her in general. Absolutely horrid.
I think some of you might be wondering "Why should we root for such awful people?" Well, unlike certain media out there with such unlikeable leads - After and its sequels. This pattern of behavior eventually gets addressed and fixed. It's important for characters to have flaws and yes, flaws because episode 1 intro conveyed Jin-joo and Ban-do to be very sweet, nice people. What happened then? (god I wish I have pictures)
Ban-do's job essentially turned him into a subservient dog for the higher-ups, he'll bend over backwards to please them if it meant a possible raise. This showed me Ban-do's other flaw is being a people-pleaser and he was desperate to keep providing for his wife and son.
Jin-joo was a very tired housewife. She did everything and barely did anything for herself. She felt tired and looked the part. All she wanted was a break and for her husband to give her proper time and attention. The only flaw I could think of with Jin-joo was that she wasn't good at communicating her problem but immediately resorting to petty insults and destruction of his property.
This lack of proper communication between them culminated in Jin-joo breaking down and asking for a divorce when he couldn't be contacted (becuse his job is shit) and someone sent her a pic of Ban-do with another woman (that he didn't know) and she immeditely assumed the worst, which wasn't exactly her fault- her husband was often home late, barely paid attention to her, and when he did, didn't respect her as much as before. Yeah, sounds hella suspcious.
The scene here was so gutwrenching because I knew Ban-do didn't mean to hurt her in that way. He was a bit of a douche but he wasn't a cheater and he was about to go home and apologize with flowers for their anniversary when she called and asked for a divorce, not even giving him time to explain. Yeah, he also had the right to feel that way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aight. They got divorced after this. Seo-jin (their son) was likely with Jin-joo's sister for the time-being. Where do we go from there?
Well, the scene of them throwing away their rings was awesome and google wouldn't give it to me. The way they threw their rings away was very reflective of their characters. Jin-joo was sad, lamenting about how this wasn't how her life was supposed to go, letting go of her ring by dropping it outside of the bus on her way home.
Ban-do was in his room at his old parent's house, angrily wishing they never met and throwing his ring out the window, reflective of his brash nature.
Bippity boppity fuck the space time continuum, they were sent to the past of 18 years earlier, with their memories in tact.
Them remembering their current lives at 20 years old is the key to their character development later on.
Cue past shenanigans, Jin-joo and Ban-do being petty as fuck especially after they found out that they remember their current lives. After some time of them being really petty to each other, some might think "Why are we still supposed to root for these people to get together?"
I think I wasn't supposed to. They made up their minds to try and pursue other people and I figured, nah, this isn't about them as a couple anymore but them as people. Jin-joo and Ban-do got married when they were 21 or 22. They were still their 20s selves, that being their worst versions. Jin-joo was stuck up and bratty and Ban-do was impulsive and brash.
Enter the secondary love interests. Jung Nam-gil and Min Seo Young.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nam-gil was closed off and elusive, prefering to keep to himself. Seo Young on the other hand was sweet and friendly.
I'll be honest, I got worried that they'd make Nam-gil a better option than Ban-do and Seo Young to be a real bitch deep down but no, neither of those things happened which was a pleasant surprise.
Nam-gil was great. He was awkward and despite his appearance, carried around this aura of inexperience to him. The reason why I don't think he would have been better for Jin-joo is because of when his attraction to Jin-joo started. While Jin-joo initially pursued him, thinking she was his first love that he never got over, she eventually stopped when he gave her a cold warning to "stop her weird obession with him."
Nam-gil started getting the real feels when he got into physical contact with Jin-joo twice. He saved her both times and she worried about him in return. Especially with the incident with his hurt ankle, she started mothering him, if you will and he got so smitten with this version of Jin-joo. While it's nice that he finds Jin-joo sweet and caring and he wants to return that (by asking her for her time, trying to defend her honor, gifting her things), their dynamic was more like her nurturing him to be a nicer person (by asking him to reciprocate people's affections and efforts) and him trying to pursue her to no avail.
His character added something to Jin-joo's. She understood that she was well, a brat who treated him like shit that one time, then assumed he was obsessed with her, then only wanted to get with him because of his status in the current life as a billionare historian.
Throughout the story, first loves's types and strengths were discussed. Jin-joo wanted to be someone's first love because it was supposed to be special. She truly became his first love in this timeline and she decided no, she didn't want him to be alone forever pining for her like she initially belived.
She wanted him to experience a life outside of her because he was a good, warm person deep down and that he deserved happiness.
Tumblr media
And he does at the ending. 😭 Look at him! He was with his kid in that shot!
Tumblr media
Min Seo Yeong was Ban-do's first love.
Tumblr media
Go Bo Gyeol and by extension, her character excuded innocence, softness, and grace fitting for the ballerina dancer that she was.
Seo Young wasn't as troubled and complicated as Nam-gil but she wasn't shallow. She was a popular school dancer, weighed down by the pressures of academics and theatre by her parents.
She greatly benefitted from having Ban-do in her life, pushing her to have fun and stepping out of her comfort zone. She started eating more, expressing herself more, getting outside of the house, walking around.
Her character change was all thanks to Ban-do finally working up the courage to talk to her and pursue her. Unfortunately, this backfired. His efforts at taking care of her, lecturing her (like Jin-joo did with Nam-gil), and barely physically pursuing her afterwards, led to her seeing him less like a boyfriend and more of a father figure. And he took it well, all considering. All this bonding with Seo Young, give us a little more about Ban-do's character.
He thought of himself as an average guy with nothing interesting going on, no hobbies, no special skills, nothing. He forgot his love of films since he pursued Civil Engineering, contrast to him telling Seo Young to do whatever she loved in the career she was actually passionate about.

Date: 2017
Language: Korean
Country: South Korea
Cast: Jang Na-Ra , Son Ho-Jun, Jang Ki-Yong, Kim Mi-Kyung
2017 KBS Drama Awards - December 31, 2017
Excellent Actress (mini series) (Jang Na-Ra)
Best Couple Award (Son Ho-Jun & Jang Na-Ra)
Son olarak dizide, Goblin ve Descendants of the Sun dizilerine göndermeler yapılıyordu. Gülümsetse bile çok dikkate alamadım. Yani özetle, zamanda yolculuk dizisi değil de, evli bir çiftin hikayesiydi. Özellikle birine dizi tavsiye edecek olsam bunu izlemesini önermem.

Baldur's Gate 3 is officially the first game to successfully have me romance a male character in the first playthrough. The combination of the urge to roleplay my character over listening to my homo instincts and good writing has made me, for the first time, choose what my character would be attracted to over me.
Congratulations Astarion, you're enough of a traumatised bastard that my equally bastardous silver-tongued sneak thief would absolutely be into you. You have beaten my lesbian instincts.

I feel like I'm losing my fucking mind.
while the absolute horror continues to bombard palestine - the nonstop bombings, the dead bodies in the street and trapped under rubble those living can no longer get to, the restriction of health care, newborn babies left to die, starvation and thirst, literal sewage in the streets spreading disease, all of this in gaza and even in the west bank, the increased bombings there and raids - daily, meanwhile, here in canada, we apparently have nothing fucking better to do then arrest people for using pro-palestine chants under the guise of it being hate motivated.
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
I wish this was a fucking joke, but no. a protestor in calgary was arrested for using 'from the river to the sea, palestine will be free.' apparently the cops stopped by to 'inform' the protestors what chants were allowed and what were ~no no's~ which included 'from the river to the sea', and when a protestor used it anyway (because it's NOT FUCKING HATE SPEECH) they arrested him. for calling for the freedom of people under an occupation.
this is canada, supposedly one of the most free places to be (built atop the blood of indigenous people but anyways). but with pro-israel propaganda and the weaponizing of anti-semitism being repeated by our media and leaders, shit like this happens.
someone tell me right now where in the phrase 'from the river to the sea, palestine will be free' there is a call for an extermination of jewish people. look me in the fucking eyes and try to find where in that call for freedom it shows hatred for jews. this is fucking pathetic. this is a call for freedom. this is a call for liberation of a people who've been oppressed and assaulted for years, since before both my 60+ parents were born. this is a call for them to be able to walk freely within their own homes, within their own land, to be able to control their own lives. liberation for their safety and for their children, from the constant risk of arrest, assault and raids by the israeli army.
this is about ending an occupation, not the jewish people & their way of life.
many new sites like cbc and global reported on this as well as others; the global article also interviewed a jewish man, who claimed the chant was anti-semitic. it mentioned that he was the president of an organization called 'Federation CJA' - one google search of their website, and wouldn't you fucking know it, they're in partnership with israel, from 'birthright' trips to allowing you to send goddamn postcards to their poor, sad soldiers who're exhausted from bombing innocent civilians all day.
so while we sit here in safety, humming over think-pieces about whether a demand from an exhausted people to finally let them be free secretly means slaughtering every person of another marginalized group in site, the death toll in gaza has gone above 11,000.
of all the fucking absurd things canadians could be talking about right now, this has to take the first-place blue ribbon.
frankly, what this does mean at least, is one thing - when the occupier starts crying because the people they've trampled on for years demanded they stop & it hurt their feelings, it means they're scared. it means that the marches and support are working. when the oppressors start weaponizing language used for liberation and claim it's a cry to hang them from the gallows, then they're getting desperate. it's a reminder to us all to keep pushing and fight for a liberated palestine.
from the river to the sea, palestine will be free
(I s2g if any zionists come in my notes trying to claim some bs that is just the regurgitated rhetoric of the propaganda you've swallowed it's on fucking site I will block you).

Platonic Stobin Month, Day 21: Stargazing
"Hey, Robs?"
Steve's voice cuts through the cooling night air. It has been a relatively warm night for the late-Spring evening as they sit out by Steve's pool, lounging back on a chair each as they look up at the stars.
"Yeah?" Robin replies, tearing her gaze away from the skies to look over at her best friend.
He looks nervous, breathing a little heavier than expected for the seemingly tranquil calm they had cultivated from a night of mutual silence as they stargaze over a few beers. He huffs and sucks in a hearty breath before chewing at his bottom lip.
"What is it?" she asks, quiet and trying not to sound too demanding of an answer as she moves to sit up.
She spins on the spot to face him, placing down her nearly emptied beer can on the glass outdoor table situated between them. Steve doesn't look at her. Instead, he remains looking up above them, shaking his head ever-so-slightly as he seemingly wills himself to say whatever it is he's nervous about.
"I think I'm going to ask Eddie out," he declares, voice quiet as he speaks, his words only slightly slurred together.
He finally makes eye contact, brows knitted together as he purses his lips, looking like he wants to take back what he just said.
"Cool," Robin shrugs, waving a hand to offer a shred of casual support so as not to spook her best friend.
"Really?" he asks, his worried brows finally letting up as his eyes go glassy.
At that Robin stands.
"Scooch over," she requests with a smile, cocking her head.
He does as she asks, reaching a hand over onto the concrete slab to steady the chair as Robin squishes in next to him.
"Careful," he warns as the metal framing gives a squeak and scrapes with the movement of a second person sitting on the lounger.
"Oh please," she laughs. "Like you haven't sat out here with a girl on your lap."
She wiggles down so she is laying against him, hooking her right leg across Steve's and resting her head on his shoulder. She searches his face, poking him in the chest with a gentle finger and raises an expectant eyebrow when he meets her gaze.
"You think it's a good idea?" he asks tentatively.
"Yes," she whispers, poking him again as he hugs her tight.
"You sure?"
Typically, Robin would tease him over this level of uncertainty but, in this case, she'll let it slide. Because this is the first time Steve has verbalised the unspoken obviousness of his crush on Eddie Munson.
She raises a hand to his chin, gently turning his head so he can't look away.
"Steve, we know Eddie likes you."
And they do. The idiot makes it pretty damn obvious. Hell, even the kids know. Dustin and Max have even taken it upon themselves to team up as the world's worst matchmakers.
But Robin isn't going to mention that part because the general nosiness of the Dork Squad is partly why Steve and Eddie have been dancing around each other for months. It's almost as if they are all co-dependent losers who don't possess one ounce of self-awareness or the ability to recognise boundaries...
"I know you're nervous," Robin adds, earning another sigh.
"I just..." he begins, cutting himself off as he looks back up at the stars with glee in his eyes. "I really like him."
"I know," she says, following his gaze. She laughs, "Even though he is such a dork."
"Yeah, he is a dork," Steve echoes fondly, giggling.
"Hey," she says, poking him once again to get his lovesick attention. "We'll devise a plan so you two can talk uninterrupted. No dweebs around, okay?"
"Sure," he smiles and kisses the top of her head. "Love you, Robin."
"Love you too, Steve," she says, kissing him on the cheek before returning to looking up at the starry night above them.

hm feel free to tell me ur thoughts if youd like friends but basically my friends did text abt doing dinner and i was like 'im sorry i cant tn feel free to go w/o me or lmk if you wanna do another day' and ofc i caught stupid messages back just like 'booooooooooo' 'i cant till next week at least' 'what time r u busy til eye roll' and ill be honest here i fucking lied not that i should have to even give some big explanation but i was like 'well i have class till 5 (theoretically i would) and then have a meeting that doesnt have an end time' basically pretended the one from yesterday. and then i even sent a followup like 'if you guys end up just hanging out at someones place or you grab drinks or anything ill try to stop by later on' and the one sends a message back like 'do you think if we planned on a day next week you could commit to that?' fucking condescending as hell and to that i literally said 'Hm well idk' and then they were just like 'No days next week?' 'just wondering i mean bc maybe the three of us can just go and then we can plan on something lower commitment some other time.' fuck you first of all. and then a 'i get it if it's too last minute!' from my one friend um so thanks to her i guess and i sent smth kinda snarky back like 'well it's not like we had an actual commitment for any day but by all means go and ill certainly try to carve time out in my schedule some other time yeah!' and ive had the notifs muted bc i just dont want to deal with it rn. why am i not allowed to not be available why am i automatically some flaky low commitment bitch who has to be constantly berated in the chat while yall also ignore pretty much everything i say. im not doing that. and this just confirms my suspicions that they already see me in a certain way why should i have to bother when i HAVE still tried to see them and at least offer alternatives when i cant make it to things. also the semester just started like

Part 2
The Love Triangles and Why They're Great Here
I have a lot of gripes about love triangles. First, the Second Love Interest is either bland/awful/an interesting third wheel. Inuyasha. Second, both Love Interests are just awful. Twilight.
Go Back Couple avoids this by making the love interests not only likeable and interesting but also giving them valid reasons as to why they're not the best option for the leads or why they're no longer even an option, and thankfully not by giving them love interests of their own.
Tumblr media
Good scene btw.
First, we should compare and contrast everyone in the two love triangles.
*Ban-do - snarky, earnest, impulsive, observant, righteous, and hardworking
*Nam-gil - distant (towards everyone initially), sentimental (mostly with Jin-joo), and abrasive (towards his mothers and other girls)
*Jin-joo - sweet, naive, sentimental, temperemental, hardworking, and somewhat vain
*Seo Yeong - gentle, graceful, easy-going(especially later on), and distant (particuarly when it comes to her problems)
Everyone's default here is nice. These people are generally polite but on their own, they vary so it seems they don't have a lot in common on the surface.
Ban-do vs. Nam-gil
I was worried they'd make Nam-gil just look like the best option instead of actually developing Ban-do into the ideal but remember the premise, Jin-joo married this man for a reason and the show wonderfully displays Ban-do's best qualities to balance out his rascal tendencies.
Ban-do tends to look out for people who couldn't defend themselves, likely because he got into scuffles and would likely be grateful if he was helped the same way. He looked after teens, elderly and even his fellow schoolmate like Ye-rim, yes, it was mostly to fuck with Park but his plan still saved her from a sham of a marriage. All that, coupled with all the times he went out of his way to keep Jin-joo safe from con artists like the English Major and Park himself. Yeah, he was a douche about it but he still meant well. When he overheard Park talking shit about Jin-joo, and at the time he was bitter with her, he still went out of his way to ruin Park's day because fuck that guy.
Nam-gil was not the better guy. Jin-joo tried to woo him, with the fact that he would have turn out to become a famous billionaire History Lecturer , clearly not the best motive. Nam-gil was distant, fickle and was fine being rude to other people with the exception of Jin-joo because Jin-joo was nice to him. He's got a lot of issues he was bottling up and he wanted someone who might have understood that and it was Jin-joo. It would have been sweet really but he wouldn't have been trying to be nicer to his peers if Jin-joo didn't ask.
The end of the story wraps up with these two coming to an understanding when it came to their love for Jin-joo. Ban-do didn't have to, could have let his pride and jealousy get in the way, but he was humble enough to find Nam-gil and thank him for saving Jin-joo from Park Hyung Seok's assault. Nam-gil in turn realized that Ban-do was being genuine and that lead him to confessing to Jin-joo for the sake of being open and honest, with not only her but also himself, letting her go at the end of their date.
Jin-joo vs. Seo Young
I was concerned Seo Young was gonna be too perfect or a secret mean girl just to cause conflict with Jin-joo. Thankfully, Jin-joo still had to work on her flaws to be a better person/partner and Seo Young didn't have to be put down as a character.
Jin-joo being somewhat vain, insecure and materialistic (to a degree) leads to her having this highly romantic or naive idea of marriages. She tried to get with Nam-gil (a future billionaire history lecturer who was supposedly in love with her) and Hyung Seok (Ban-do's future boss-doctor at the pharmaceutical company). After Nam-gil coldly rejected her, she almost immediately ceased all attraction to him, as he gave a bad impression. She only viewed him as a younger man with issues after that. Hyung Seok's sexist comments angered her and it finally made her heed Ban-do's warnings about him.
Seo Young on the other hand, as far as I knew, never had a boyfriend and wasn't looking for one. She was just a school dancer and heart throb, weighed down by academics and theatre by her parents. She just needed someone who was unconditionally supportive and caring of her and her interests.
Unfortunately, they don't have an actual relationship but that doesn't mean they don't add a little something to each other's character on a meta level. The deeper dynamic was one-sided, with Jin-joo being jealous of Seo Young for not only being Ban-do's first love but also being perfect- pretty, popular and talented. Jin-joo eventually learned to regain her appreciation for Ban-do's earnest and hardworking personality, the same one that made Seo Yeong fall in love.
Seo Young for her part, never actually met Jin-joo personally. Especially in the past as they were strangers. In this timeline, she only met the other a few times and her only impressions were 1) She hates Ban-do, 2) She's good at singing and cooking, and 3) She's Ban-do's true love.
When Seo Young figured them out, she was shown to be very happy for them, which was mature. Instead of asking Ban-do to change for them to be together, she supported him and only wished they could still be friends, which she deserved!
With all the dynamics being this good, I want to talk about the best one of all which is of course Ban-do and Jin-joo. They have the best plot and now I will be discussing the timeline of their relationship.
