SAM SAM SAM CORNER BAKERY JUST FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY
This is, pun intentional, so delicious.
For those of you who may be new, my feud with Corner Bakery goes back at least a decade at this point because they kept selling me food that made me sick. But the reason this is delicious is not that I am witnessing the fall of a worthy foe -- it's because I think this confirms my theories about its business model, since Corner Bakery explicitly failed because a) trends were shifting before the pandemic and b) Corner Bakery lost revenue that other places didn't due to people working from home.
My theory has always been that Corner Bakery's model was to situate itself in places where there were no other strong options. Corner Bakeries tend to exist in business districts or tourist districts where people are just far enough away from other good food options to make a reasonably priced soups-and-sandwiches place look appealing. They went into museums, or near museums and other tourist destinations, where the other options were either very high-end or McDonalds. Their locations in Chicago's downtown are near skyscrapers full of people who want fresh, "healthy" food quickly on their lunch break but don't want a grocery-store sandwich.
And then they serve the absolute cheapest, poorest-prepared food possible. Tiny expensive bags of cheap chips, the lowest-quality deli meats and condiments, gross bread used even after it goes stale, elderly veggies used after they start wilting. The last time I got a sandwich there, it was made with the heels of the bread, unripe avocado, and deli turkey that was uncomfortably wet. The last time I ate there ever, I got food poisoning from a slice of lemon pound cake.
I didn't know that this was true but I suspected it, and the coverage seems to be confirming that their brand of swindle, which was highly vulnerable to a drop in tourism, turns out to have been even more vulnerable to mass work-from-home than most restaurant chains.
Corner Bakery traded explicitly on the desperation of the people it served and made me sick multiple times before I stopped eating there. Good riddance, I hope its holding company lets it die completely, and I'm going to take credit for it personally if it does. :D

On a journey to make/find the perfect sandwich
Turkey and ham on baguette w/ kettle chips
Tumblr media
Gouda, Swiss, whole grain mustard, arugula, mayo.
I scooped the bread to make it less of a mouthful.
Dear lord, never take this whole grain mustard from me. It adds so much to anything. Really, it's mustard in general. She's that girl or the condiment game. If you don't like mustard, grow up.

hey!
if you, your child, or anyone you know and plan to hang out with are coughing/sneezing rn... please consider NOT going to a public place like a cafe! or, send the healthy one inside MASKED.
baristas and line cooks and register workers and servers and all service workers are PEOPLE WHO CAN AND DO GET SICK.
- sincerely, a cafe worker who is immunocompromised, needs to be healthy for an upcoming procedure, and whose coworkers pretty much are all sharing a flu

I keep telling myself to post this and then forgetting, but here’s the progress on the Bakery Enemies AU dress (@buggachat’s AU).
This really has been a side project (because while I was hyperfixating on it I didn’t have access to the right equipment, and by the time I was back in a place to access my stuff I was already enmired in like five more important responsibilities and various rotating hyperfixations). But I made a previous post and I feel like I ought to round it out with some more information.
Also I absolutely adore @buggachat and her AU, and I want to celebrate the work that she’s done.
So here’s Marinette’s dream gala dress (at least, within the unfinished capacity to which I’ve progressed):
This project was meant to be a way for me to use some of my fabric scraps to drape something fun, so it took a little bit of experimentation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I draped and patterned a few pieces and made a mock up out of muslin to make sure that the pieces shaped correctly and were the right measurements (all of which I do not show in the pictures. I just figured a little context would be helpful for anyone who’s never sewn before). Then I started my first version with an opaque layer underneath and added a sheer over layer. Unfortunately, this version was scrapped because the under layer absorbed too much light, which hindered the ability to see the spots that I added afterwards.
The first spots that I tried were cutout and stitched on (which looked super campy). So the second time around I painted them on my under layer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then I draped a skirt from some leftover chiffon.
(I’ve removed my sewing room from the background. It’s a mess. I don’t want you to see it. Maybe one of these days my ADHD will drive me to clean it instead of abandoning it to chaos. But that day is not today.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since then I’ve created a black underskirt. But then I went and mucked up the overskirt by painting it. (I know better. You’re not supposed to dye a dark color. You start with a lighter color and move to a deeper gradient. But I’m also using fabric scraps and I got lazy and I figured ‘it’ll be ok. It’s an experiment. It’s fine’ . . . It was- . . . Ok, it was kind of fine. But not stellar. And the red was never going to be light enough for me. So I’m not showing it to you. Because while it is productive for people on the internet to know that dresses take a lot of experimentation and don’t pop out of thin air, I am also embarrassed by my ridiculous choices that went against all logic. So I will tell you about them, but I will not show them to you).
I’m considering going out and genuinely crafting a decent Ombre. But it’s not going to happen right this instant. I’m not sure how long it’ll take me to decide and then to actually finish the dress. But there you go! Some progress pictures, and maybe also some perspective on the process of crafting clothes. All of this took hours and days, although sporadically separated—mostly because each step requires testing to ensure that the seams and measurements work well and that the right fabric is being used, and that it’s being used properly. Definitely not on the professional level, but what I tinker with in my own sewing room tends to follow a bit more of a haphazard plan than what I would do in a shop.

Don’t Eat At Corner Bakery
Unrelated to anything but to the number of people who asked me why I warned Anon off eating at Corner Bakery in Chicago -- I used to eat there occasionally in my first few years in the city, until I instituted a ban because their food was so uniformly awful, so frequently poorly made, bad tasting, and threatening to the digestion, that I realized the problem was institutional. It happened to me across at least four different Corner Bakeries between Roosevelt and Sheridan, including the one in the Field Museum (now mercifully a cafeteria) and the one in the Crain’s building, which ought to know better.
The second to last time I ever ate at Corner Bakery I got a turkey and cheese sandwich with avocado to go. The avocado was so unripe it was crunchy, the turkey was unsettlingly wet, the cheese was absent, and perhaps to maintain structural integrity due to the Wet Turkey they made the sandwich with the HEELS OF THE BREAD LOAF. I understand sometimes you run out of bread, but I do feel like getting a $9 sandwich made with the two last slices of bread that are 99% crust entitles you to some kind of discount, especially since by the time you get to the heels both are stale.
The last time I ever ate at Corner Bakery I got a slice of lemon poppyseed cake, thinking this would be safe, and spent that evening vomiting.
Corner Bakery is bad food, poorly prepared, and unsafe to eat. Possibly in the ten or so years since I instituted the ban they have changed, but I’m not risking finding out. There is nowhere in Chicago that has a Corner Bakery that doesn’t have somewhere better to eat nearby.

When I was younger I used to ride in the car to a local Costco and pass this cute little empty corner store on the way. I fantasized about having my own little shop there and most of the time it was a bakery in my imagination. I wanted to start each day by opening the blinds for the sun to stream through and prop open the door to let in the customers. Today I passed by it again and it’s now a cross fit place. Lost potential if you ask me. I was going to watch the sun come through my windows and have the regulars come in at the same time every day. The trainers will never understand. They won’t treat her like I would have treated her.

//shhhh everyoone, the low activity blog with no character interactions has some important news....
//my current manager was just fired, so i might be taking on that role. What that means for this blog is still up in the air. I still want to interact, but bear with me, it might be another week before i fire off any in character content. That being said i'm also down for casual discord roleplaying if ya'll had some weird itch to interact with me. If you want that i am happy to provide in dms, but not publicly. I really wanna do stuff on this blog that isn't OOC stuff but ahhh....adulting comes first
