I’ve been feeling really inspired by @emmatheward’s character Cadmus, the Consumed, and looking for a fun creative exercise, I went and analyzed the (first half of the) God-Devouring Serpent’s theme from Elden Ring. I wanted to make a theme that somewhat fit that classic GRRM/ER sound - you know the one, lots and lots of cellos, some war drums, an overly dramatic solo violinist (sorry, redundant), and some vocals.

I wanted a theme that I could get my ass kicked to, but tell me what you think! Enjoy~

wait are ppl theorizing abt dnp beats lol... i read thru a generic creator contract for lowave records around when all or nothing dropped, the basic gist is: lowave makes music for a creator essentially for free, the creator uses the music in videos, the streaming revenue is split, and if the revenue is good enough theyll keep dropping beats. idt theres any like Plan for it other than more bgm for videos and therefore less necessity to dip into the copyright free Classic Youtuber music bucket (especially cuz all those old imovie soundtracks they used to use are actually copyrighted! i tried using a song from imovie in my own video and youtube kept saying there were copyright issues)

Public Domain cartoon characters from Golden Age comic books

Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit going (mostly) into the public domain is a pretty big deal. In the next ten years a lot of animation from the 1930s will wind up in the hands of all artists who want to use them. But did you know there's a huge amount of cartoon characters from the 1940s that are totally free to use? It isn't just cartoons that starred on the silver screen that have fallen out of copyright. (Of course, I'm using the word "cartoon" somewhat loosely...)

See, when US copyright law was revised in 1976 and went into effect in 1978, works created before 1964 were required to have their copyright renewed before the end of 1980, or else they would become public domain. Hundreds if not thousands of Hollywood movies and other types of media had been made by studios and publishing companies that went bankrupt and were completely dissolved decades prior to this new law. This included the cartoons made by studios such as Bray, Van Beuren, and many others- but it also included comic books.

If you weren't a big comic book company like DC or Marvel, chances are you shuttered your doors sometime in the 1950s or early 1960s. And during the 1940s, with the rise in popularity of Looney Tunes, Woody Woodpecker, Tom and Jerry, and Droopy, comic book publishers were printing tons and tons of comic books starring wacky, slapstick-oriented animal characters. Most of these titles went out of copyright, and there are lots of fun and interesting characters to be found in them.

One of the most historically notable is Supermouse. When the first Mighty Mouse cartoon premiered, he was called Supermouse, but what they didn't know was that Pines comics had already taken the name, and successfully sued for copyright infringement even though they were both parodies of Superman.

One of the most interesting titles I've come across is Funny Films. The conceit of the series is that these are actually cartoons you can watch in a movie theater, except it's a comic book. A bit confusing, I know.

The end result is a series of fourth wall breaks so absolutely thorough in their scope that the fourth wall really doesn't exist anymore, barring actually jumping out of the page (or your computer screen) and blowing up your living room. They talk to the audience, jump out of the screen, and even show up late for the cartoon to start. This is of course the bookends to a whole bunch of slapstick gags and goofy dialogue.

Another interesting series, especially if you're a fan of Archie, is Hi-Jinx. They basically took the premise of teeny-boppers in high school and made them into funny animals. Most of the stories have something to do with swing music and dancing.

And although they're crudely drawn, one of the more unique character concepts is Pussy Katnip, found in various titles scattered across the mid-1940s, usually buried amongst a bunch of more normal stories with ordinary human characters. Pussy Katnip looks like one of your classic film noir glamorous beauties, except she's an anthropomorphic cat. Think Minerva Mink but feline. She may appear to be a femme fatale at first, but she's actually a crimefighter. To do this she chugs a mysterious beverage that gives her enhanced strength and intelligence. She's sort of a mystery-solving superhero.

Her appearances are random and kind of hard to find. Here are the titles of the ones currently circulating online: All Your Comics (1944 issue) All Top Comics (one-shot) All Good Comics Everybody’s Comics (1944 issue) Green Mask v1 #11 Ribtickler v1 #1 All Great Comics (1945 issue) Book of All-Comics Green Mask v2 #2 Rocket Kelly #2 Zoot Comics #1

Often these comics, especially in the early '40s, remind me of the artwork of underground comics of the '70s- not quite rubberhose, not quite Looney Tunes. The kind of thing you might find on a punkabilly album cover.

And ocassionally you'll come across characters with a suspiciously familiar name:

One thing to watch out for is the occasional Donald Duck knock-off, some more obvious than others.

So if you're like me and you're too impatient to wait for Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to fall out of copyright, and you want to do something more unusual and unexpected, there are dozens and dozens of comic books with silly, wacky characters that can be utilized in your own original stories, cartoons, and what have you- and you can monetize them too!

When, like me, you're exploring the low budget depths of the free to stream horror genre, when life gives you a movie called Oops! You're A Vampire you watch it. I don't set high expectations for these movies, and I don't watch them because I think they'll be good. I do it because I love horror movies without reservation. If you wanna see new people in the genre, new directions, or really just anything a little off the beaten path, you gotta go off the beaten path. This also pertains to watching movies not made by US Americans, which I do but we're talking about the low budget stuff.

Okay so what are we even doing with our lives? I don't know where to start with Oops! You're A Vampire (OYAV) except that it's one of the reasons I keep going back to this dumpster. It's not good. If you want good, go find a movie that can afford a score besides copyright free classical music., feel me? But for working off a shoestring, it's shockingly effective. The acting is average, but everyone does their level best to rise to the occasion. The camera work, lighting, and editing are all significantly higher quality than I'd have anticipated, as is the writing and directing - in fact overall the effectiveness of OYAV in creating emotional connections and thoughtful metaphors soars with what I can only imagine is the same sense of pride as a garage built airplane taking flight. It surely doesn't belong up there in the sky but somehow there it is. The bizarre way the dysfunctional family unites against the adversity of one of them being a vampire, and the way vampirism itself is likened to a degenerative disease rather than something that creates a superhuman monster is passingly close to a genius metaphor, though not fully articulated. In particular an xmas dinner sequence in a messy dining room with blood soaked walls from the victims of the titular vampire is both grotesque and heartbreaking.

The closest OYAV comes to being the comedy its billed as is the worst, scene, a painful and cringe inducing attempt by a True-Blood parody of an elder vampire to take the younger one into his suspect care. Everything else, while varying in tone, rarely strays far from something like a wistful and sad sense of longing, each person in the family wishing they had some way to connect to each other, and the only way they find any common ground is caring for a sickly vampire. There are movies that go way above their range, and of all things Oops! I'm A Vampire is one. Now whether you should watch it is another order. If you are an appreciator of micro-budget trash, you may just be delighted at this rough masterpiece. If not, well it's probably not a good idea.

Here it is! Doomsday in the style of 1976.

TWO MINUTE PREVIEW. FULL TRACK ON MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL.

I was initially going to come up with a story to explain how the Doomsday scenario could happen in Season 14. Maybe Sarah-Jane was whisked away at the end of The Hand of Fear, as part of a backup plan by the Master and Chancellor Goth, and the Doctor found out about this, and talked with her at the end of The Deadly Assassin using Time Lord technology on Gallifrey.

But I thought it would be better to let you come up with your own ideas to explain how Sarah-Jane could get separated from the Doctor in a parallel universe, and how he managed to communicate with her. Feel free to share your thoughts about how this could happen, in the comments. I'd be very keen to hear how you think it could have worked!

I took inspiration from the soundtrack of The Deadly Assassin to come up with the instruments to use for this. There's heavy woodwind (oboes and bassoon's) and one of the backing instruments is an organ which featured prominently in that story. I tried to balance both authenticity with emotion and nostalgia - a balance I try to strike with most of my remixes. So, before anyone comments "this doesn't completely sound like it's from 1976", this is why. Tracks like this would not have featured in Classic Who, and to strip it down and make it as authentic as possible, much of the emotion and nostalgia would have been removed (in my opinion, anyway) that means it deviates massively from what I'm trying to do.

There are some brilliant creators out there who do an incredible job of making 'era authentic' music. @HudsonMedia and @GeorgeCMusic are two examples of creators who do a phenomenal job of this, and deserve infinitely more praise than they get for their efforts. I admire their work immensely, and would encourage you to subscribe to their channels.

My approach is to echo the nostalgia and emotion attached to the original track while making it sound like it *could* have sounded in the era being channeled. This is done by taking the original track and 'plugging in' the instruments or sounds of the era. My work has been described as "bombastic", "fun", and "emotional", which is what I try to prioritise with my mixes. That's a long winded way of saying that if anyone says 'it doesn't sound like the 70's' that I KNOW!

Also, I know someone is going to comment "this, but the 1960's" or something similar. I'm receptive to suggestions for future releases, but lately the suggestions have been more like a demand or insistence than a suggestion for the future. I've been getting a bit uncomfortable with the degree to which people have been saying 'do this', like they have the right to demand something from me. Like I said, I'm very receptive to suggestions, and several of my releases have been the result of a suggestion, but please don't phrase it in a way that shows you have the right to tell me what to do. I don't claim any monetary reward for this work, and I'm very unlikely to ever start some sort of monetary reward platform for these, for ethical reasons (it's copyrighted music, and I use sheet music and/or MIDI files made by other people). So, this work isn't rewarded by money, and it's something I do in my spare time, both as a therapeutic distraction from a tumultuous personal life, and as procrastination from my PhD. So, please phrase your suggestions a little more respectfully.

Lastly, I wondered about releasing this in July, being the 18th anniversary of Doomsday. But it seemed too far away, and as the Majestic Tale (1970s) is taking a lot longer to work on, I thought this would make for a decent release in the meantime.

If I’m being honest, I have been more into just listening to music during my free time more than anything and while I read a lot of manga, my goldfish brain would blank out if someone were to ask me anything about it. However, I will tell you my list of definite rewatch/reread series though some of them are pretty old or obscure.

My Top 10 (in no particular order)

Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-Kun (manga/anime)

At first, I watched it mainly for the fun aesthetics (cute colourful characters with spooky backgrounds) but I fell in love with the characters and world-building of this series. The whole cast, be it main or supporting, are absolutely amazing and capable of running a story arc of their own even without the main cast which is seriously impressive. And while the anime only just scratched the surface, the author really built the setting of this series with great thought, with its own politics, history, systems, and culture that impacts the story well. No random fact is without purpose and I love it.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. (manga/anime)

I’ve been watching anime since I was 4 so I can confidently say that I’m familiar with many classic anime tropes and cliches. This series is like a kudos to longtime anime fans with its jokes and jabs as it follows a strong psychic boy being absolutely done with the insanity of his life as he tries to keep his powers a secret from his schoolmates like a sports anime jock, a shojou girl, delinquent gone good, etc. The comedy coming from this deadpan omnipotent high school student is just an absolute delight. I kin Saiki so much

Nope (movie)

I’m a real fan of horror movies, especially those with undertones that bring a critical element to humanity. While I love all of Jordan Peele’s current works, Nope has got to be one of my favourite movies overall. I’ve heard of some of the criticisms people had with the film (pretty ironic ones too) but I personally love the pacing and suspense of the film. While it’s fun to watch monsters and killers get crazy from the get-go (that’s why Saw movies and slasher films were popular) but Nope touched on that all-too-real fear of not knowing what’s going to happen. That fear where you’re afraid but you’re not sure of what yet.

Petshop of Horrors (manga/anime) and the sequel Neo Petshop of Horrors (manga)

Speaking of horror with critical undertones, I was obsessed with this manga series that came out in the late 90s. I would try so hard to find a way to read this series every chance I could growing up. It’s a sorta episodic style story that stars a mysterious petshop owner that often becomes a suspect in the deaths of people who have bought animals from his shop. I love the philosophy of each new story that touches on humanity and how different (or similar) we are to animals. It questions our societal norms, expectations, base desires, mythology, what it means to live, and what is “acceptable” in our world. Unfortunately, the series was never fully translated and only published fewer copies than typical manga series due to reasons I’m not too sure of (possibly conflicts with ownership and company copyrights at the time, think Baccano situation). The series had an anime but even that anime only had 4 episodes (I still highly recommend it however). I’ve managed to get a few volumes for myself and I know people are selling certain volumes online but I have to save for essentials so collecting them is unfortunately a lower priority now.

Pokémon (video game/manga/anime)

Is this a cop-out? Nah. To this day, I would still have to physically fight myself to not buy plushies and games when I’m already broke af. Pokémon might be one of the first animes I have ever seen (I have seen both sub and dub because my brother found a way) and I would still on occasion go back to rewatch literally any season and any movie of theirs, Nintendo really hit the marketing jackpot with this franchise. The creativity and design are so iconic and memorable that it’s so easy and fun to get into the fantasy of going on an adventure with your favourite Pokémon. There’s of course some nostalgia at play since I loved the moments where my older brother would watch the movies with me and my cousin and I would collect the figurines together.

One Piece (manga/anime)

Is this also a cop-out? Don’t care. I LOVE ONE PIECE! I will sacrifice my time and tears for this series. I have legitimately managed to rewatch this 4 times in my life (granted I started when it only had 400+ episodes so I had an easier time) and I would willingly cry over a flashback, a whale, even a boat over and over again. The action and story-telling of this series just keeps me running back for more even if I keep meeting dumb gatekeepers (yea, people don’t believe me when I tell them I’m a One Piece fan, what are ya gonna do?) I haven’t watch the Netflix live action yet but I probably will once I get my friends to watch with me (I like to fangirl with friends~)

Forget my Husband, I’ll Go Make Money (manhwa)

Despite my blog probably being best known for the villain/ess series, the banner of my blog is not an isekai villainess story but a fantasy series where a woman who can see the past, present, and future tries to make money while being married to a foreign prince before expecting a divorce (because she assumed he rather marry for love than for political reasons). Fun fact, this series was actually one of the foundations when I was writing the villain/ess story for Leona. The art and main couple are just absolutely delightful, I can’t help but reread it as it returns for a new season. Not only is the art just gorgeous, the main couple is just so gosh darn entertaining with their conversations, personal dynamics, and hilarious misunderstandings. Just beautiful.

Hotel Del Luna (K-drama)

Leave it to my interest in horror to love a romance drama with ghosts in it. It’s funny, it’s cute, and some of the ghost’s backstory is heartbreaking as well. This is a great story to just have a nice cry out. I love the story, I love the music, but most importantly, I love IU! She is my queen and every scene she is in, she kills me with her fashion, her haughty character, and her tragic backstory. She and the male lead was such a fun twist of the typical k-drama relationship where she was the powerful but broken character who ended up being healed by the kind, hardworking character. I've watched this 3 times at this point, but I still cry Every. Single. Time. No exceptions.

Hell Girl (anime/manga)

If I haven’t sold you on how I was probably that kid with creepy interests, maybe this will convince you. This was my go-to show back when I was in middle school. There is no excuse, I just really love the psychological horror of this series. In the show, there is a website you can access at midnight where you can ask Ai or Hell Girl to send your most hated person to hell, with the price that you will go there too when you die. While there was a linear storyline in the background, the episodes were always new people who requested Ai’s help with different cases of their own hell on earth. It touches on some really heavy real-life topics but what made it memorable to me was how sometimes I would feel saddened by the choices the people in the show made. Sometimes, they’re in the situation where all they can do is curse someone to hell but then was it really worth losing your chance at a happier afterlife? I watched this show with some of my friends who either saw Ai as a villain for sending people to hell, or a saviour who helped these people find an escape from their torturer, and that honestly made me think about what it means to have that much hate in you. I always wondered if I was ever in that situation, what would I do if given the chance?

Big Hero 6 (movie)

Arguably the first Marvel-Disney movie since Disney bought Marvel, I remembered people having weird thoughts on the usually cartoony company taking over the superhero franchise but I fell in love with everything that was this movie. It had Marvel-style action mixed with classic Disney wholesomeness and gut-wrenching emotional moments. I loved the message and warmth that was in this movie. Having an older brother myself, I couldn’t imagine how I could go on if I lose him but watching Hiro being so well supported by Baymax and his friends cemented within me the importance of helping others and that supporting those in pain can be as powerful as stopping bad guys (sappy, I know but hey I’m now learning to be a preschool teacher so this really stuck with me). Tadashi’s recorded message brings me so much comfort that I didn’t realize I needed. He may have been the closest thing to a Disney crush for me.

i watched iasip. once again, thank you for the long post. you really sold me on it, and i'm glad you did. i don't have anyone to share my thoughts to, so i thought i'd come back here.

(just for the record, i watched from season 5-16, because i struggle to get into shows if they start off slow. after i write this, i'm going to go back and watch season 1-4)

my first thoughts were, i'm surprised how much of the soundtrack i know. the background music and intro go so hard, don't get me wrong, but i was shocked how much of it i've already heard from youtube videos and stuff.

my seconds thoughts were. woah i hate everyone yet i care for them?? now that is good writing. but also i've never gasped or said "oh no" aloud so much while watching a show. again, good writing.

surprisingly, several of the episodes like, hit me hard and got me genuinely feeling like shit. cough the suburban house episode cough.

i was also surprised at the out right gayness. normally from these types of sitcoms, i've grown to accept the odd gay joke and gay-coded characters. but a canonically gay character that's sexuality is brought up often and isn't just stereotypes ontop of stereotypes? that (sadly) really shocked me.

i also found myself able to predict the way the episodes were gonna go, not for all of them but for quite a few. my brain would just assume the worst, and then it would happen. which, i think added to the atmosphere if anything. the dramatic irony and the dread i would feel as the episode progressed really just hooked me. i knew it was all going to shit, i hated it was all going to shit, but i couldn't stop watching.

overall, a very enjoyable show. i think i might like it a little less when i watch the earlier 4 seasons, because i'm assuming it'll be physically painful to watch. but again, thank you! you've created an iasip fan!

and yep! a lot of the soundtrack, including the title sequence song, are just from an unlicensed free music library online lmfao, so a lot of youtubers and stuff use it when they need music that won't get them demonetized for improper copyrighting etc. this is because they started the show with such a small budget lmao, and they decided to just stick with it. it's a funny bit tbh. here's the pieces they use for score if you were wondering, I listen to them a lot lmfao it's genuinely good music (coming from a music major who listens to instrumental orchestral shit a lot lmao)

and YES it's so awesome how terrible the characters are as people, yet you're still captivated by them and genuinely care about them. that's storytelling baybee!!! some people don't really vibe with that aspect of the show and it puts them off so I’m glad you liked it.

the suburbs episode LMAO that one's a classic. something I had a bit of trouble with at the beginning was being able to separate myself from the characters and just appreciate the comedy and story from an objective standpoint. I just really tend to put myself in the characters' positions or immediately find any way I can to empathize with the scenario. but this show becomes so painful to watch if you try to do that the whole time, so learning to take myself out of the story and just really not take any of it seriously at all has been interesting to say the least. this isn't to say you shouldn't have emotional responses to the show or connect with the characters, not at all, just that I had to learn to really not take the jokes and scenarios seriously. I hope that somewhat made sense

and yes!!! canon gay representation!!! even though rob mcelhenney (guy who plays mac) isn't gay, his mom is gay and he has two gay brothers, so he has been surrounded by the queer community his entire life. he's one of the few straight men who I think are truly qualified to play a gay character, and he does it very respectfully and mindfully, while not compromising the spirit and humor of the show itself. I really respect him for that, and it's one of the things that makes this show really special to me.

(p.s. idk if you've seen mythic quest? that's another one with great gay rep. I think I remember you mentioning you'd seen it but I thought I’d put that in here just in case you haven’t)

you saying that you would predict what was going to happen next because you just thought "what's the worst way this could go," and then it did indeed follow that worst case scenario, made me laugh lmao. I have a similar experience watching. it's exactly like you said: you know it's going to shit, you hate that it's going to shit, but you just can't stop watching regardless.

and, I don't know if you’ve already watched seasons 1-4 by the time I post this, but they're really not bad at all. in fact, seasons 2 and 4 are in my top 6 seasons of the show overall, and the season 4 finale is one of the most iconic episodes in the entire series. I just meant that season 5 is a good place to start because it immediately gets going, it makes sense without too much context, and it's a good way to gauge whether you'd be into the rest of it or not. but that's awesome that you just immediately watched all the way to the present.

anyway! yippee!!! welcome to the club! I’m a pretty new fan too tbh I started watching this august, but I’m really glad I was able to recommend you something that I love, and that you really enjoy as well. lmk what you think of seasons 1-4 or if you ever want to talk more about the show, as you can see I am always down to yap about my favorite sitcoms lmao (sorry about the unnecessarily long response) happy honda days 💯

Later, at the Minami house, Fisherman Minami closed his eyes and took a deep breath before saying anything. Carefully, he bowed his head and apologized to his wife. “Tanira san, I am deeply ashamed of my behavior towards you this day. I can only say that I am used to being the one taking in catch from the other boats and was upset at seeing you and those girls from over at the Shop of Repairs doing it. You do know that they are spies for the evil ones in that shop, do you not?”

Tanira nodded a bow thoughtfully as she replied, “Minami san, I will accept your apology. That you were very upset at the turns of events lately is obvious. I did also expect you to say that last.

“If Minara and Takahara are spies, still, we owe them much. I took the Fish Market as a complete settlement for the golden cash that you stole from my dower rights. Looking at its books, I made a very bad deal. Without the help of those girls, I would not have earned enough to pay for the fish that we got today.

“Even if I tried your criminal trick of only paying for fish after it is sold, the Market's earnings would have been only a few of copper cash. With their alert and pleasant attitudes, they drew in many customers that would have passed us by. Because of them, we earned two of silver cash and three strings sixteen of copper cash after all costs including buying the fish at dockside.”

Slipping a bit from courtesy, Minami snapped, “And then you went to dine with those evil ones!”

“Minami san! After a long day of hard work, Ichuru san and I were invited to share a free dinner in pleasant company!

“On the dock you crowded to the head of the queue in front of those there first! You rudely called me 'woman!' and demanded over three times the value of your catch in front of all the fishermen! You were so completely rude that your own crew threw you into the water for some peace so that they could settle the value of the catch.

“You left such a sour ending to an otherwise excellent day that when Ichuru san and I were offered a pleasant meal in happy surroundings, YES, we took it at once!

“When we came out to come home, you ruined even that! If you are what is good and they are evil, I will take the evil at once!”

Her shoulders slumped and she began to weep. “I am sorry, Minami san. This conversation has gone badly. I wish that you could see why.

“Would you like me to fix you some dinner?”

Minami paused, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. He noticed Ichuru quietly playing with his toy boat on the tatami mats of the floor and his face softened. “Yes, Tanira san, I would appreciate that.”

Taking the small victory of her husband's being courteous with her, she went to the kitchen and began to cook.

For a wonder, it was a quiet meal and when it was done, Minami helped her to clean up.

The next morning both Minami and Ichuru were absent, so she had a quiet breakfast and went to open the Fish Market. Both Minara and Takahara were waiting for her. They had not been idle. All of the sun shades were up and in their proper places. The little ice that had survived the night was waiting.

Takahara bowed politely in greeting and said sadly, “Poor Patsu san was right. There is a lock on the ice house door and a note saying that the key will cost you a cash of silver.”

Concern in face and voice, she asked, “Poor Patsu? What has happened?”

Both Minara and Takahara shook their heads in sorrow. “It was last night sometime, after the tide started to rise. One of Sabo's regular fishing boats, the Chrysanthemum of the Sea tried to fish in the waters near to Dry Island after dark. There is a strong tidal bore that comes out from between Dry Island and the Rocky Eyot. The sudden current caught them and pushed the boat onto some rocks sideways.

“It rolled over and three of the seven men on her drowned. Patsu came out to our dock first thing in the morning and found two of the bodies. In spite of being broken up, she saw the survivors on that dangerous rock beach on Dry Island. She took a small boat and some floats out.

“Not even our boats are safe near that beach. She let the floats out on a long line for them. She pulled all four of them to safety at our dock. On the way in, she found the last of the drowned men. She was really upset by that.

“The ones that she saved went and got a Constable to complain that she should have come for them in a bigger boat that they could ride in, instead of being towed in on floats.

“She had to explain that a bigger boat could not have got close enough to get the floats to them and then snapped that since they were that ungrateful for being saved, she was going to charge them for her work, equipment and time in the rescue.”

Both girls started to giggle. “She did too. Went straight to the Tribunal and filed her claim, pointing out in the bill that if they had not been ingrates and complained to a Constable, she would have charged them nothing.”

Nodding at the ending, and smiling some, Tanira pointed to their cart with the ice chest. “Takahara san, if you would, they told me yesterday that they would see me cared for with ice. Could you please go and get us some?”

Takahara took up the pull bar and trotted over to the Sabo's Better Fish Market. The women there laughed at the idea of Minami trying to blackmail his wife for the ice that she needed as they filled the cart with sparkling clean ice.

Soon the Fish Market was open. The three of them had loaded their display trays and were busily cutting fillets from fish that were still good but getting a little stale. The filets were going into openwork trays that were being put into the sun to dry for commercial trade to the back country areas, far from the sea. Along with those, they were setting up trays of sea water to evaporate for salt, also valuable in both Sabo and the back country.

Besides this happy industry, they were tending to a surprising number of customers! Word had gone out that Minami no longer ran the Fish Market and it was now busy.

In the midst of this, Minami and Ichuru came up from the dock area. Minami had a sourly triumphant lip curled half grin as he announced, “If you want to use the key to the ice house, you must pay me!” He was holding up the key. “It will only take a silver cash each time that you need it opened!”

Takahara snorted, “Really, Minami! You truly should use your eyes before opening your mouth!”

His eyes took in the trays of sparklingly clear clean ice! He instantly snapped, “Where did you steal this from!? You must have forced or picked my lock!”

Tanira had a grim smile of her own as she pointed to the key still upraised in his hand and nodded. Constable Canra who had come up unnoticed during Minami's outburst, plucked the key from his hand!

Steamboat Willie's version of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain in 2024

Mickey entered the public domain on Monday (1st); Walt Disney's first short film featuring Mickey Mouse is available for public use in the United States.

Steamboat Willie is a 1928 animated short film directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Produced in black and white by Walt Disney Studios, the cartoon is considered the debut of both Mickey and Minnie Mouse, although both characters appeared in a test screening of Plane Crazy several months earlier.

For a long time, the image of Mickey Mouse has been associated with the Walt Disney Company brand, but now on the first day of 2024, Disney's copyright on "Steamer Willie" and the silent version of Plane Crazy -made in 1928- expired.

Plane Crazy is a 1928 American animated short film directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. The cartoon, released by the Walt Disney Studios, was the first apparition of Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend Minnie Mouse and was originally a silent film.

Steamboat Willie is especially notable for being one of the first cartoons with synchronised sound, as well as one of the first cartoons to feature a fully post-produced soundtrack, which distinguished it from earlier sound cartoons. Music for Steamboat Willie was arranged by Wilfred Jackson and Bert Lewis, and it included the songs “Steamboat Bill”, a composition popularised by baritone Arthur Collins during the 1910s, and “Turkey in the Straw”, a composition popularised within minstrelsy during the 19th century.

The film has received wide critical acclaim, not only for introducing one of the world’s most popular cartoon characters but also for its technical innovation. In 1994, members of the animation field voted *Steamboat Willie* 13th in the book The 50 Greatest Cartoons, which listed the greatest cartoons of all time.

Nevertheless, the film has been the centre of a variety of controversies, notably regarding the 1998 Copyright Term Extension Act passed in the United States. It was close to entering the public domain in the U.S. several times: each time, copyright protection was extended. It could have entered the public domain in four different years: first in 1955, renewed in 1986, then to 2003 by the Copyright Act of 1976, and then to 2023 by the Copyright Term Extension Act (also known pejoratively as the “Mickey Mouse Protection Act”) of 1998.

There are differences between the 1928 Mickey and the company mascot today. Mickey from "Steamboat Willie" does not have the gloves and big shoes of current Mickey, and his eyes are small black ovals with no pupils.

The decision is quite symbolic of the firm, and often contradictory, relationship that Disney has established with the issue of copyright. On the one hand, the studios played an important role in lobbying and pushing for the approval of the law that extended the term of copyright to 95 years.

However, Disney itself built an extensive and successful legacy by building on works that were in the public domain. This is the case of "Frozen", inspired by "The Snow Queen", by Hans Christian Andersen; "The Lion King", which is based on Shakespeare's "Hamlet".

Plus, Mickey isn't the only classic character to enter the public domain in recent years. On January 1, 2022, the copyright on AA Milne's original Winnie the Pooh character also expired.

One of E. H. Shepard's illustrations for the "A Pooh Party" chapter in A. A. Milne's 1926 "Winnie-the-Pooh", now in the Public Domain in the United States (copyright protection in Shepard's native United Kingdom will last until 2047).

Only the original versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse from 1928 will be free of copyright, so it is not possible to use the characters with copyrighted elements or their later versions; Anyone wishing to use the image needs to be careful not to confuse consumers into thinking the creation is produced or sponsored by Disney as a matter of trademark law.

Disney is not giving up on its famous mouse, they still maintain the copyright on more recent versions of Mickey, such as his version in “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” from Fantasia (1940), as well as trademarks that have the mouse as a brand identifier because of the company's trademark on later versions of Mickey Mouse, you also won't see Mickey serving as another company's mascot, Disney owns Mickey, "He cannot be used in this recognisable way for advertising."
