Along the trail through the Copper Falls Mine...

As we made our way down the hill we also made our way through the old Copper Falls Mine surface plant, though that wasn’t particular obvious to the casual observe. It took a sharper eye, or at least one trained on what to look for, to come to the realization that there was something “unnatural” lurking in the neighboring woods. These would be the faint fingerprints from the heavy hand of industry laid upon the land; physical echoes from a time long gone and past.

The old Mineral Range State Road on which we have been traveling would be abandoned in the early 1900s, replaced by a state-funded trunkline known as M-15 (now known as US41). While the new highway would utilize a great deal of the old Mineral Range’s route, a large portion between Phoenix and Delaware would be abandoned in favor of a more favorable route further inland closer to the already established Keweenaw Central rail line. With traffic no longer utilizing the old road, it would quickly disintegrate into nothing more than an overgrown two-track fading away in the wilderness,

At Central, however, the old route would be given a second life as a residential street. This new street was called Stagecoach Road in memory of its original purpose, but instead of connecting mines and mining towns it simply connected the remaining occupied homes at Central to the new highway. It also served as convenient egress to the ruins of the mine’s abandoned surface plant for auto-tourists - as seen in this archive photo of the road provided courtesy the Michigan Tech Archives.
