#compassionate care

I am fucking tired of people using the word "empathy" when they clearly mean "compassion".
For all y'all that don't know the difference here's a chart:
Tumblr media
Being empathetic isn't being able to care about other people, that's what being compassionate is.
Just because you may not understand exactly what a person is feeling or be able to experience their emotions with them does not mean you do not care about other people, or that you don't want to help them.
Tumblr media
So, for all y'all that think ppl with low empathy are incapable of caring abt others? Fuck you.

This headline is misleading. The article acknowledges the need for affordable housing and assistance for people experiencing mental illness.
Democrats favor funding for community-based care which is voluntary, and which meets people where they are. Republicans are for a return to the old, draconian approach to mental illness - locking people up and throwing away the key.
Compasionate treatment costs less and is more effective.

I took Mandana to the vet today. I’ve noticed some behaviors she usually only shows when her thyroid levels are off (such as napping in a separate room instead of following me around and heat-seeking behaviors like begging to be let under the covers). We just had her thyroid tested in August and it was normal but I’ve been keeping an eye on her anyways. When I lost her Thyroxine bottle I figured it was a good time to go in and get things checked out.
I was right about her thyroid levels being off. I thought they were low when in reality they were pretty high. The only thing that has really changed is the weather is cooler and we have increased her physical activity since getting a yard (she’s no longer exposed to the herbicides so maybe that was having an effect on her thyroid too) It’s one of those things I’m going to have to monitor throughout her life because her levels seem to rise and drop at least once or twice a year. I’m kind of impressed with myself for catching it so quickly especially since the behaviors could easily be explained away by the cold weather and extra activity.
Unfortunately, I feel it’s necessary to find a new vet. I love the specific vet we go to and a lot of her staff but it seems every time we go in there is some resistance. Mandana is a Malinois and as lovely as she is she can be pretty sensitive to pressure. It’s one of the reasons I’ve put so much work into cooperative care. She will happily flop onto her side for restraint or offer a leg for a blood draw if given the option but when surprised with harsher compulsory methods she starts to shut down and her fight or flight kicks in. Usually it’s not a problem and they appreciate me for making their jobs easier but more often than I am comfortable with I am being met with resistance either for time reasons or because a few of the vet staff would rather bully their way through an appointment instead of taking an extra minute or two with me coordinating the session.
I’ve had enough. The few times they have convinced me to let them take her to the back I have deeply regretted it. Now that we have moved, I’m going to explore some vet clinics in this area. I think I’ve found one nearby that is fear-free certified. I’m hoping I can get her in for some training visits and to develop a rapport with them. There is no reason she should be forced into an stressful situation for routine care.

Our new vet appointment was a huge success!
I love their protocols for fear-free visits and tbh it should be standard care for all pets. They’re going to switch us to 1 hour appointments so we have more time for miscellaneous training and they said they don’t usually do visits for training specifically but they might be able to work something out for us if we wanted to pursue that.
They were more than happy to follow my lead during the appointment and said almost everything can be done in the exam room with me and I can do the restraints for most things. There are two vets at the clinic who do fear-free appointments and their vet techs are also versed in the protocol so no worries there.
Mandana was happy to volunteer for a blood draw. It took a little longer than expected to collect enough blood but she was sooo good and didn’t hesitate to offer her leg again when they wanted to put vet wrap on it to prevent a hematoma
They are going to do a basic blood panel as well as check her thyroid. They are hoping we might be able to wean her off thyroid meds now that we are away from those environmental chemicals that were making her so sick
She is still having some irritation (not nearly as bad as before) around her eyes from allergies. I suspect it’s the dust as we’ve yet to clean out the HVAC system like we need to and she has a pretty bad dust allergy. They switched us from the NeoPolyDex drops to the eye cream so it’s easier to apply
Occasionally she gets a little bump on her leg, neck or head. I always thought they were related to her allergies but the vet said she thinks it’s a Histiocytoma which is benign and should heal on it’s on in a few weeks. The one she currently has might be infected so she gave us some antibiotics to take and we’ll come back for another appointment if it doesn’t heal on it’s own
The vet had no problem refilling all of her Rxs which is great
The only problem we ran into is that the waiting room was busy and although they have segregated benches all it takes is a couple of large freaked-out dogs to ruin it for everyone. They did eventually move us back to an exam room but I wish they were a little more on top of it. I’m not sure if it was because it was a new vet or because she has been having some issues with the big neighbor dogs but she seemed a bit more stressed out than usual. No barking or whining but definitely “stressing up” which was unfortunate (but maybe unavoidable) for her first visit.
All in all I’m extremely happy with how the vet visit went. I think there are a lot of vet clinics out there who try to do good by the dogs but unless you have protocols in place it seems to be the first thing that gets skipped when they are in the weeds. I’m not willing to compromise on her mental health so I’m happy to have found a vet clinic that stands by their fear-free certification.
