#tuesday I have experienced and continue to experience colorism professionally. Sadly, it’s intracultural most times. Sharing this w 💗: Being a light skinned/white passing Latinx does have its privileges in the white supremacist systems we all live and work in and we all know how diversity programs have been taken advantage of by people w Spanish surnames who benefit from existing privilege. AND when folx start excluding individuals from conversations about change work, we lose those stories, perspectives and insights. Greater self awareness and our relationship to power for mutual benefit is key here. You can slice and dice race and ethnicity all u want, it only perpetuates the systems and approaches rooted in white supremacy. #tuesdayvibes #transformationtuesday #themasterstoolswillneverdismantlethemastershouse #Repost @colorismhealing with @make_repost ・・・ Join me live every Tuesday at 2:00 Central Time. A very common question I've addressed in other conversations, but I wanted to create a post just on this topic. Text on slides: Colorism is a social system that includes not only marginalization but also privilege. The actions or behaviors labelled "reverse colorism" do not constitute a social system... and they do not reverse the social structure of marginalization and privilege. Excluding dark-skinned people because you consciously or subconsciously think they are not as good as light skinned people is colorism. Excluding light-skinned people to compensate for the effects of colorism is NOT colorism in reverse. Prejudice based on the perceived inferiority of dark skin and perceived value of light skin is colorism. Resentment or distrust in response to the system that places greater social value on light skin is NOT colorism. The way individuals react to or cope with colorism is not "reverse colorism." Backlash to colorism may be hurtful, but it is not colorism itself. To the extent that you find backlash against a system problematic, you should be that much invested in dismantling that system. For the past few weeks, I’ve been struggling with how to use my voice within this movement. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ One of the reasons why I’ve been struggling is because of my own internal struggle with my own Blackness.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know how transparent I am on my social platforms. I intentionally waited to speak about this because I didn’t know how to adequately articulate my thoughts and I didn’t want anything I put on my platform to distract from the most important and immediate actions that need to be taken in this movement.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Since we’re at a place where we are really digging into these necessary and uncomfortable conversations, I think it’s time for us to start having more conversations about colorism and how it impacts how we as Black people exist and move through the world.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Colorism doesn’t just affect the Black community, by the way. Colorism is literally problematic internationally.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “Colorism is a manifestation of the idea that even if one isn’t white, her worth may be determined by how close she is to being white.”⁣ - Dr. Sarah L. Webb @colorismhealing ⁣ ⁣⁣ Let’s change this.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 📸: @dag_images (at Washington Square Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCHwIiLJ_2o/?igshid=30gvshs40t5

#This ❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣ Reposted from @colorismhealing Was watching the movie 35 and Ticking and the colorist casting was egregious. It's usually most obvious in black movies. So, no. It's not enough to just have more black-owned and black-created content b/c so much of THAT has actually contributed to the problem. We have to find and support black creators who don't hate dark skinned black women. #colorism #representationmatters #media #blackmedia #blackcreators #accountability - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/B-rvQ6ThtlU/?igshid=8y6tnuyffgkk

Content notice: Oppression based on skin complexion (#colorism), reclaimed colorist and anti-black phrases, #classism, oppression against black wimmin and girls (#misogynoir), school disciplinary action, simulated armed violence, anti-black discrimination and racism, and mass incarceration. End of content notice. Credits: The organization Colorism Healing (@colorismhealing) is the original creator of this post on Instagram. I did not include every slide from the original post. I have reposted with their permission. End of credits. Post description: Slide to the left to view each of the five images. Slide 1: "Light skinned blacks earn 10 -[to] 12 % [percent] more than dark skinned blacks. colorismhealing.org." End of slide 1. Slide 2: "Dark skinned black girls are 3x [times] more likely to be suspended [from school] than light skinned black girls. colorismhealing.org." End of slide 2. Slide 3: "Employers are more influenced by skin tone than education and work experience. colorismhealing.org." End of slide 3. Slide 4: "In shooting simulations[,] blacks & [and] nonblacks are more likely to shoot dark skinned blacks. colorismhealing.org." End of slide 4. Slide 5: "Light skinned black women receive lighter prison sentences than dark skinned black women. colorismhealing.org." End of slide 5. End of post description. Caption: Miss me wit dat, "We all black," and, "We all picked cotton," derailment. Dark-skin black wimmin and girls face colorism, anti-black racism, *and* misogyny. Homogenizing black people, feigning unity, erases the specific forms of oppression different groups of us go through. @ light-skin black people of all (non)genders and @ dark-skin black people, like myself, who are not wimmin, girls, or femmes: We cannot adequately address the aforementioned issues until we recognize our own privilege and use our platforms to uplift differently-marginalized narratives. End of caption.

Listen y'all talk that unity shyt all y'all want but I'm done with "pro black" people who never speak on colorism. Either you don't get it or you don't want to. Either way, we're not on the same team. ♀‍🤷🏿♀‍🤷🏿♀‍🤷🏿♀‍🤷🏿♀‍🤷🏿♀‍🤷🏿♀‍🤷🏿♀‍🤷🏿♀‍🤷🏿♀‍🤷🏿 #colorism #blackhistory #blackpeople #woke #sorrynotsorry #repost @Regrann from @colorismhealing - Light-skinned privilege is real. Colorism and racism harms us all. Both of these things are true. But it would be nice to have a full conversation about light-skinned privilege w/o watering it down w/ "well it goes both ways" or "we're all black" or "when the cops stop me, all they see is black." For one, such statements reveal ignorance about the systemic consequences of colorism. This is partly why I include light-skinned people in my colorism healing work (despite some criticism for doing so) because when light-skinned brothers and sisters get some healing, they can engage in dialogue about their privilege w/o being defensive, they can be empowered to use their agency to help subvert & dismantle the color code rather than ignoring or denying its existence. . @michaelericdyson .
