Colorado Clones Crash Course (...ish)
hey does anybody remember that one time on halloween when blaseball was trying to launch the first proper Short Circuit and instead the site blew up and did some weird junk to the teams
so uh. they accidentally deployed a brand-new, never-before-seen team during that: the Colorado Clones!
...and there were two of them!
there was a VERY brief period of time where they were level 2 fk and so there was a tiny bit of hushed discussion behind spoiler tags, but then the maincord rules got updated soon after (and... might've been in response to that?) so they got locked behind the insurmountable wall of level 3 "Do Not Talk About This" fk.
BUT BLASEBALL IS OVER. IT IS TIME FOR CLONES
(specifically it is time for me to talk about the version of the Clones me and my friends lorejammed because, what, do you expect me to look at a team called the colorado clones and Not immediately get attached and spin together some wild lore?)
so, hey: what if the shadows with normal names and pregame rituals were the people that made the numbered clones? what if they used to work for the ILB and were responsible for the creation of the Parkers and maybe a certain other event that didn't go as planned? what if i forgot what else was in this paragraph originally because tumblr ate it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
behold my blorbo Sondra Friendo, aka Dr. F! pregame ritual "praying for death" in the "auaughghhhh i can't believe this, i hate this, i'm tired and stressed and wish i was dead so i didn't have to deal with this bs" exaggeration way. one of the leads of Facility 1F (Gamma 3), which focuses on Weird Science in contrast to Facility 3B (Gamma 2)'s focus on Weird Magic.
(incidentally, 3B's pgrs are all ominous stuff like warding off demons, locking the cellar, opening up the pit... and dancing????)
Tumblr media
she is relentlessly bullied by her teammate Kyler Light, a clone that decided to gain free will and a personality. they might also be kissing? the clones are all weird blank slates with the origin of whoever they're clones of being completely lost, so Kyler breaks the mold with a cool name, outfit, and retreating to the shadows. (and it was designed by @.elemom!)
mostly Dr. F is grumpy and desperately wishes she was a girlboss instead of a girlfailure.
as for what the Clones might've actually been about... i mean, this is just speculation on our part, but hey, there sure was. whatever the heck this unsolved mystery is:
Tumblr media
i'm sure the fact that there was a Level 3 FK team called the Colorado Clones has nothing to do with the multiple Davenports.

The biggest problem with the Dune Extended Universe (defined as "all dune books after the first one") is that Duncan Idaho, who famously died in the first book, keeps getting cloned and brought back and they didn't do the obvious joke and name the clones after other states.
Come on, I want Duncan Colorado, Duncan Montana, and Duncan West Virginia!

Don’t know what made me want to draw Clone Cadets again. But damn, I missed it. I ended up redrawing my first ever drawing I did of them as kids. All in all, I think there has been a smidgen of improvement since 2021.

Clone Wars Headcanons
Tattooine reminds me of like Southern America or even like Colorado/Wyoming area. So I have a major headcanon that people from Tattooine have a drawl when they speak. I can imagine that Anakin has somewhat lost that drawl over time, but, BUT, it comes out on certain words, (thinking of my own accent here, on things like Oil, Time, Don't, Etc. basically he adds too much inflection where it shouldn't be, or he takes out syllables) And it especially comes out when he's mad or *whispers* horny. It drives Padme and/or Rex absolutely crazy. Because as the saying from the great Trace Atkins goes. Ladies Love Country Boys.
Obi-Wan is not a kid person. He doesn't hate them, and if needed he's VERY good with them, but he just doesn't feel a connection towards them. It's the reason he keeps refusing to take another Padawan. When he took on Anakin, he thought he would mess up on the parenting because of this, but in reality Anakin couldn't have asked for a better father figure, and Anakin makes sure he knows it everytime his aversion to children is brought up, with Ahsoka agreeing whole heartedly. And as much as that touches him he'd still rather run head first into a wall before he raises another kid.
Cody is a 'loses everything, including clothes' drunk, which is why he doesn't do it very often. But one time Rex manages drag him to 79s, let's just say Rex had never seen so much of Cody before, and he never wants to see it again. And the next day Cody had to get a new ID card as well as a new Datapad. And still to this day Hardcase calls him Commander Swinger because of the eyeful he got when Cody dropped the tablecloth he wore on the walk back, in the middle of the 501st barracks.
When they're deployed on planets with jungles or wooded areas, Anakin allows Ahsoka to hunt, but only with a trooper not far behind her, because, you know, she's a teenager, and there's a little war going on atm. But Fives refuses to go with her anymore because he wasn't paying attention once and he heard some rustling in the bushes and looked over and when he shined his light he saw her with glowing eyes like a tooka and a huge dead animal in her mouth, dripping with blood. He's never fully recovered from the image and he's seen people die right next to him, but that was straight out of a horror holo. They got back to camp, marched right up to Rex and Anakin and flatly told them he was never doing that again and that he didn't care how much they outranked him, it wasn't happening. And they never asked him again because Rex had never seen him so serious.
Tup is afraid of flying, because once during a simulation as a cadet their gunship went down and he got thrown from it and even though it was a simulator it scared him and he never wants it to actually happen.
Echo, when he gets drunk doesn't go anywhere besides the barracks or 79s anymore, because one time him and fives got drunk and had a run in with Hound and Grizzler, and the damn lizard dog bit him on the calve and fives on the arm, and instead of patching them up Commander Fox just laughed at them while they sat in the drunk tank waiting for Rex to pick them up. He now also has a fear of massiffs even if they're friendly.

Since Travis didn’t plan too well when he came to aspen, he ended up rooming with his assistant who ended up being high off her ass as she didn’t have any drug tests coming up and she’s in Colorado. It’s a one bed situation too. She could careless. She didn’t mind. She was in her pjs and a stolen hoodie he brought. She had all these munchie snacks. He had to open them up for her as she was struggling. She was right next to him in the bed holding his arm all bundled up. She made him both anchorman’s but out of order and then Star Wars The Clone Wars until she fell asleep. Travis felt himself all warm and fuzzy inside seeing her act so adorably.

Quaking Aspen - Populus tremuloides
Today I want to bring up a charismatic favorite: the Quaking Aspen. Like all populus species, it's a fast growing, clonal colony forming, northern extreme and mountain loving tree (just like its Eurasian sister species: A. tremula) with an incredibly wide range of distribution. In addition to all those interesting qualities, the oldest known organism is presumed to be a Quaking Aspen colony (Pando, in Utah)
General identification before I can talk about the more interesting bits, Aspens are best known for their yellow autumn leaves and smooth white bark with dark knots, they can grow as large as 60' but depending on their environment can be stunted to around 5-20' (think of krummholz). Leaves of this species appear slightly heart shaped and retain the same sheen on both sides (image 1). Plants are unisexual meaning individuals either have male or female flowers, interestingly enough this is a good method to distinguish where one colony begins and ends by looking at the color of the branches in spring (see image from Colorado below, note trees with light green and those without). Emerging catkins are white at first which become green and longer as the season changes, male catkins having slightly longer stamen but female fruiting catkins ultimately growing longest at 10 cm. Seeds are small capsules with silky hairs to assist in wind dispersion, these trees are ruderal so they produce around 1.6 Million a season with many unable to germinate. Seedlings often need consistent moisture and full sun to even germinate, most of the seeds growth goes to root structure the first year.
Tumblr media
The name Quaking Aspen (or trembling per the Latin) refers to the extremely mobile habit of the leaf. Leaves are connected to flexible petioles (stems) which flip around in the slightest breeze. Environmentally speaking, I was once told that leaves have chlorophyll on both sides however this stem could also be a biological strategy to cope with harsh wind conditions in mountainous environments, I didn't encounter any recent research verifying this though. Interestingly enough, given the harsh nature of which this tree thrives, apparently, there is chlorophyll in its trunk, allowing extra energy to enter the tree when it's leaves are gone.
Quaking Aspen is an early succession species, able to reestablish/colonize a site after a fire or other major disturbance. Many of Upstate New York's famous Aspen forests are actually a result of logging and fires in the early 1900s rather than a typical forest compostion. Establishment is different depending on opportunity, in the west its often long lived clonal roots systems, in the high arctic its often through wind blown seed, in the east its generally short lived clones out-competed by hardwood/conifer forest after a century, and in its furthest southeastern range I typically only encounter individuals on rocky outcrops or former fields.
Tumblr media
Above ground trees usually live less than a century, in the east maybe 50-80 years given our moisture, out west individual trunks can live two centuries. It's common to find dense forests with even-age trees since clonal root structures re-emerge together (Image above from Bluebell Knoll Mountain in Utah). Its also thought that the root system can live for two millenia or longer, Pando being an example of extreme longevity (I mean 40,000 years would survive an ice age, even in Utah there would be mountain glaciation, thats quite spectacular if true). Ironically, one of the best survival tools in the Aspen's playback is fire recovery, otherwise it will get out-competed/shaded pretty fast (see the context in image 2, that NJ forest used to have lots of aspen).
All this in mind its good to point out that Aspen's early successional habit makes it great for ecological restoration. It's common to find them as the first pioneers on former mines or superfund sites (aspen grove below from Palmerton gap, Pennsylvania). Unfortunately one of the negative side affects is that populus species often bring up a lot of heavy metals in their leaves and wood meaning they can re-contaminate through their own biological accumulation. Which is good for extracting small scale contaiminants...very bad for large sites where you need to trap metal under soil to prevent toxins from eroding offsite
Tumblr media
All this being said Quaking Aspen's large geographic range mirrors that of the last glacial maximum, implying a rapid spread onto retreating glaciers. This also suggests a growth habit requiring wet or moist soil conditions. This range is North West to Alaska nearly touching the Arctic Ocean at its Northern-most range in the Yukon, then east to Newfoundland; south west to Mexico (usually restricted to high mountains) and east from Iowa to New Jersey (with scattered populations in West Virginia).
Since Aspen often colonizes sites of former glaciation, with climate change it's predicted there will be a northward and uphill progression of populations. Aspen isn't really in intense danger of dissappearing but studies have shown major stressors (draught, extreme heat, over-grazing) cause higher mass-mortality events from minor stressors (typically disease and insect herbivorey). Given the fact that many forests are clonal there was a question of low genetic diversity amoung populations, yet interestingly, individuals undergo somatic mutations (DNA alterations after conception) and are extremely variable, so different individuals often place different energies into different defense tactics.
In addition to all of this information Aspens are primarily used today to make paper pulp. Historically settlers used aspen to derive quinine (think gin and tonic), and indigenous tribes have a history of using big trunks to create dug out canoes.
So please go out to your nearest mountain/boreal forest to enjoy the Quaking Aspen's lovely smooth bark and haunting shaking in the wind!

The most commonly accepted explanation for the formation of the Moon says that a giant protoplanet, sometimes called Theia, crashed into the newly formed Earth for 4.5 billion years and created a cloud of debris that quickly became the moon . But this hypothesis had a troublesome problem. Collisions simulated for the formation of the moon showed that Theia would have been the largest donor of lunar material. Analyses of lunar rocks from the Apollo mission, however, showed that the moon approaches, in many ways, a chemical Earth clone, not Theia.
"The theory of great impact explains many system features - and so is the preferred - but this discrepancy is somewhat challenging," admits planetary scientist Robin Canup of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, which played a key role the development of the proposition Theia [as donor material to the moon]. "This problem is already a thorn in the side of the impact theory for some time."
But this stone may be fading. Two articles published online on October 17 in Science, one by Canup and the other by planetary scientists at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, and Harvard University, they demonstrate two possibilities to produce a very similar moon to Earth, the point chemical view, from an impact.
In the model Canup, the impactor is substantially greater than the canonical Theia - instead of a Mars-sized object colliding with a much larger proto-Earth, their new study proposes a clash between two similar sized objects. "The set of impacts that I identify as able to do this involves a much more impactful than previously considered," she explains. "The kind of impact I advocate here is the collision of two objects with half of the Earth's mass. They merge to form the Earth. " The moon then be formed from the remaining debris, explaining their similarities with the Earth naturally.
