Hustler Books was the nicest when the light was low and there were clouds in the sky. Fat droplets of rain raced each other down the window. Someone had strung maple-leaf shaped fairy lights behind the desk, where two of the staff were standing around, chatting. One of them was Jack. Alex’s heart skipped a beat.

Jack decided that after high school graduation, he was going to leave his band, barely-existent family, and few friends to go to college in England.
