It's November 6th. 🏈 On this day in 1869, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Rutgers beat Princeton, 6-4, in the very first college football game. The game was played with a soccer ball before roughly 100 fans and resembled rugby more than football as it’s played today.
The rivalry between the two New Jersey schools, separated by only 20 miles, was heated. At the time, Princeton was known as the College of New Jersey. In 1866, Princeton massacred Rutgers in baseball, 40-2. Three years later, Rutgers challenged Princeton to a football game in an attempt to even the score. Each school had 25 players. The contest was supposed to end after ten games, with each score counting as a game. Rutgers finished with six games to Princeton's four.
An article in the next edition of the Rutgers' student newspaper stated, “To describe the varying fortunes of the match would be a waste of labor for every game was like the one before. There was the same headlong running, wild shouting, and frantic kicking.” In 2019, Rutgers theatrical students reenacted the first game to commemorate college football's sesquicentennial.
Even since the emergence of the professional National Football League (NFL) in 1920, college football has remained extremely popular throughout the United States. The number of teams has grown from the original two to 131, scattered throughout every corner of every state in the union. Loyal fans fill their favorite teams’ stadiums every autumn Saturday, with six stadiums having seating capacities exceeding 100,000 people. The game has grown quite a bit, eh? ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet
