What Sex and The City Did & Didn't Teach Me About Love - Part 1: Looking for Matrimony in the Bedsheets
Tumblr media
I have been in bed sick for the past 2 days, and with yet another lonely Valentine's Day just around the corner, I figured I'd give in to temptation and finally start watching Sex and The City. I know it's a show full of bullshit depictions of New York, love, and womanhood, but even the fictional glamor of this show can't ignore the very real frustrations of dating in a big city as a young professional.
For the sake of positive manifestations though, I'll mention that I am at the happier part of the show; Carrie and Mr. Big are still broken up but she's finding herself and having mostly positive experiences with other men (which in the end is preparing her for a happy marriage with Big, so.. good stuff still?) - but Miranda and Charlotte are learning more about themselves and breaking down barriers while also respecting their boundaries now that they're in healthier relationships.
And the inspiration for this post - my roommate's boyfriend is secretly plotting their engagement!
For the past few months, he has been acting hella odd; I was worried maybe he was cheating on her, but it didn't add up to the clues or his character as a person at all - it's what we all are taught to erratically fear and assume whenever something seems different from a partner, even if all the signs suggest the polar opposite of that.
Honestly, I'm so glad I'm binging the show now as a 23-year-old with adult friends in healthy relationships and missed it when I was 15 and all my high school friends held that and What to Expect When You're Expecting as the gospel for what to expect in adult womanhood. Because, like I said, though there are some realistic depictions in the show, most of it is over-dramatized and/or over-glamorized - and there's a lot that this show gets completely wrong about real love, sex, and relationships.
Tumblr media
For instance; not every woman has to get heartbroken, betrayed, or objectified over and over again before meeting the right match and settling down. In the show, all 4 main characters go through more than 10 guys each season in the first half of the series - which is totally fine and dandy if that's a lifestyle of your choosing and not a self-destructing habit made out of desperation. Unfortunately, I think the show perpetuates a narrative that says casual/non-committal sex occurs among women because they are desperate to find matrimony in the bedsheets rather than because women enjoy sexual liberation.
Charlotte is almost made fun of for her strict rules about sex and intimacy, and always focuses on the future of marriage whenever considering a relationship with a guy. Miranda has a pessimistic attitude about love and relationships for the majority of the series but is then delightfully surprised as she begins to unpack her anxieties about love and regains control of her life through therapy and self-realization.
Compared to my real-life friends who are in healthy committed relationships/marriages, Carrie Bradshaw and her friends got most of it very wrong; most of my friends in happy relationships did not date/have sex with a dozen men; actually, most of my friends are marrying their first serious love - some of which have been together since high school.
The truth is we as women (and/or non-binary feminine people, I'm still learning how to write more inclusively) should not be desperate for a loving long-term relationship! It should be ok to have consensual sex and not want or expect anything else from it. And it should be ok to keep boundaries that cock-block casual sex - and to communicate those boundaries to potential partners.
Overall, I guess my roommate's upcoming proposal and binging the first 3 seasons of Sex and The City got me to realize that when it comes to love and happy relationships, there's no one-size-fits-all expectation - as long as y'all respect each other and love each other truthfully, I think you're doing it right.

If it wasn’t for your constant love and support, for all the coffee, most of which I only ordered to see you on long set days*laughs* for the oreos and ginger ale — you’re the best part of my dreams coming true. So it’s open but empty because it’s for rent. So was the lady like a landlady or real estate agent or a like a new owner? Maybe someone Wonder and the gang helped if the latter.
Mmmaybe, though it still seems really weird that it'd be flipped to "open" and unlocked if it's for rent?
The coffee lady is definitely a coffee lady, though, unless they're changing her role, because her 3D model is referred to as "cafegirl" and "coffeegirl":

So probably a new owner.

First movie of my Studies in Film class was An American Werewolf in London and y'all... this flic was horny asf. Keep reading for my full review!
From a feminist perspective, this film is extremely horny. Now granted, there is a historical correlation between sensuality and the supernatural; vampires are often portrayed as erotic agelessly beautiful beings – seen in both books and films such as The Vampire Diaries and Dracula, witches are characterized by seduction and mystical sensual mysteriousness (Legend of Sleepy Hallow starring Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean), and werewolves are the epitome of “manliness” by being extremely muscular and socially abrasive (Twilight, Teen Wolf, etc). In respect to this literary/cultural hypersexuality of the supernatural, An American Werewolf in London certainly contributes to the supernatural genre. However, I’m finding it extremely difficult to say this movie is good; David Naughton as the main character David Kessler has good acting skills and most of the dialogue is good, but I cannot generalize this movie and say it is a good film.
Let’s start on a positive note with David Naughton - aka David Kessler, the American Werewolf causing chaos in London. David as a character fits the “nice guy” trope; he cares for his friend Jack (obvious in how he runs back for Jack when the werewolf attacks them), he is softspoken and sweet to nurse/leading lady Alex (played by Jenny Agutter), and he is silly/quirky. I like David Naughton’s acting because he maintains his character’s “nice guy” archetype while also reacting to the unusual events of the film; throughout the film we see David question his sanity, fall in love with Alex, and literally transform into a werewolf – but he never abandons the quintessence of his character – sweet and quirky. And he’s hot – David Naughton was a great physical casting choice to keep the trend of sexualizing the supernatural.
The final of two “good” points to this film: the dialogue. According to Wikipedia, An American Werewolf in London is considered a comedy horror – and based on the dialogue/script, I can see why. For example, David runs away to an explicit adult entertainment cinema (more on this later) after waking up in the zoo from a night on the prowl as a bloodthirsty werewolf, and at this cinema he sees/hallucinates his “undead” friend Jack, who has been reappearing throughout the film as his corpse decomposes more and more. In this final encounter, Jack is barely recognizable with his green rotting skin and the exposed bones in his face – a drastically more grotesque shift from the last time we saw him on screen. Rather than freaking out like he typically does seeing Jack’s talking corpse, David is clearly exhausted and unphased by the disturbance and merely says to Jack “you look terrible,” to which Jack responds with a bitterly sarcastic “thanks.” This is one of many funny conversations within the film, in part because humorous casual dialogue like this occurs despite the horrific events and grotesque visuals within these same scenes.
Like I said earlier, this movie overall did not make it onto my list of “good movies” – in fact when talking about it with my roommate, I only recommended she watch it just to see the ridiculous hypersexuality and anti-feminism of it. I watched this film twice to make sure I gave it a fair assessment, and on the second watch I could confirm this did not pass the Bechdel test. Actually, I would say this film demonstrates the lack of feminism within cinema and why we need assessments such as the Bechdel test; Alex – David’s love interest – thankfully isn’t limited to a wardrobe just of a nurse uniform and Victoria’s Secret lingerie, but she is the only woman on screen for more than 2 minutes who doesn’t dress (or lack dress) for the sake of seduction. While Alex is at work, David watches an advertisement on the “telly” for a special program on “Naughty Nina,” who is wearing a tight, short red dress and only says sultry phrases meant to personify herself as the seductress. Then, when David hides in the adult program cinema, the camera continuously cuts to the screen where a woman is repeatedly shown with her breasts exposed and doing sexual acts with/for a man.
Feminism and hyper-sexuality aside, this movie is also disappointing in basic cinematic elements – such as its ending! Alex breaks through a line of police to talk to David in his werewolf form in a dark alley after he’s begun killing civilians in downtown London, hoping she can calm him down before the police hurt him. She finally returns David’s sentiment and tells him she loves him, and when the camera cuts back to him in his werewolf form we see his eyes soften and his brows bend like the confession resonated with him beneath the scary predator curse. But the wolf then bares his teeth for a moment and the police don’t hesitate in shooting him down. By the time the police catch up to Alex and see the body, David returned to his bloody nude human form, leaving Alex sobbing until the camera cuts out to the credits – which the end credit song (Blue Moon – an upbeat pop song) feels severely out of touch with the last scene of the film. Overall, I would recommend this movie to those who would analyze it with low expectations – or just want to watch something different from the constant reboots, remakes, and Marvel productions. I myself most likely will only watch this one more time for the sake of reviewing the film on my blog – or if I just want some eye candy from David Naughton.
