Bear with me as I have The Tortured Poets Department on repeat and Taylor wrote But Daddy I Love Him for John Egan and Julie Jean -
I forgot if this was ever fun, I just learned these people only raise you to cage you - in reference to Lana’s life long career pushed on her by her mother in order to be the money cow for the entire family so if it was something that she ever did for enjoyment and not for the benefit of her mother’s approval it has been to long a time and she can’t recall anymore.
I just learned these people try and save you ‘cause they hate you; to high a horse for a simply girl to rise above it; they slammed the door on my whole world; the one thing I wanted - No one is keeping John away from her for her own benefit they simply don’t want her to have the one thing she wants and the one thing she’s willing to fight for because they want her to continue following the path they have laid for her and her mother stealing her letters and trying to convince her John was dead was never for the benefit of Julie Jean but so she can continue to be only Lana Tierney.
Now I’m running with my dress unbuttoned
Screaming “But Daddy I love him
I’m having his baby”
No I’m not but you should see your faces
Oh Julie Jean, I can see their faces when you guys marry in every Allied territory between Europe and America just so they can’t keep you two apart. I can see their faces when you are having his baby.

Julie’s never defied her mother, she has the career her mother wants, is marrying the man her mother chose, and her life is carefully played out by her Mother’s scheming hands. John is the one thing she’s wanted for herself and has fought against them for. In many ways Julie Jean never got to be a child. She’s been working since she was a child but in other ways, her mother has never allowed her t grow up. And she won’t get to experience that until she’s free and she’s with John and he opens her eyes or helps her to mature those aspects in their life together.

Soon enough the elders had convened; down at the city hall

The saboteurs protested too much
Lord knows the words we never heard
Just screeching tires and true love
Her Mother and the studios and the press and the fans are all going to have a lot to say once they finally get to be together but none of it is ever going to hurt them or even reach them.

Summary: John Egan sits down to respond to the unforeseen favor of a letter from Miss Julie Jean Turner

Circa: late August 1943
All writing credit to my incredible baby buddy Bri, knowing I was swamped with other chapters and having been possessed by the spirit of old romance she set out to write this, loosely based on our mutual screams in the the dms
Dear Ms. Tierney,
If strangers call you Lana Tierney and friends call you Julie Jean Turner, I do not fit in either category after the way I behaved when writing to you my letter, and as such, I’m choosing to address you respectfully. I meant every word I said, Acorn, but I was crude and unmannered in my speaking to you and a gal like you deserves better.
Fuck- there I go with that nickname.
And now I’ve written a curse. I have to wrap this up before I turn it to further shit. My intended apology to you is very real but my approach - whether in being in awe of you or asking for your forgiveness - my approach never is right.
Buck has sat me down now and he’s told me where I went wrong in the way I was so vulgar with you. I told him I must have done something right to receive such a lovely picture in response, but then I got to thinking you were most likely only doing your due diligence and making happy a man who can die any day now. Like another stop at the war bond tour.
A.C.O.R.N. - you’ve asked what it means but this letter is to be respectful and at some point on this paper I hope to get to my apology. In accordance with the respect and manners and apology that I keep referencing I can’t let you know what it stands for, doll. It’s filthy (in the best possible way) and you absolutely cannot know what it means. This is a nice letter of respect and penance so let me get to it. Forgive me Ms. Tierney for my vulgar comments and shameless drunken ramblings that in turn forced you to feel like you had to give me the time of day. I am not worthy but I will appreciate your response and kindness and loveliness well beyond the length of this godforsaken war.

Y’all, everybody, dear anons, I am aware of and I see your Dear John Asks 💌 in my inbox!! I’m sorry I’ve not gotten to them yet, I swear I will!
I’ve had such a busy week personally, have been possessed by certain Those Who Can scenes that have eaten up what little spare artistic energy I’ve had, and so, I’ve been tardy. I wanna answer them with the time and attention they all require, I mean it when I say no thought of yours is “silly” to me, whether we are screaming about Penis Size or the costly heroism of a specific figure. Like, I love it all and I’m very much fixated on savoring each and replying in something less than a blurred huff.
As for the update: I DONT KNOW YET! I’m so so so sorry, it’s not done, I can tell you that.
However, due to the kind genius of @stylespresleyhearted I think we may have some letters to share with y’all? Would you like that? Perhaps this evening or tomorrow.
