Once again I am pissed that most of the Maya manuscripts are gone. So tantalizingly close to getting a look at a culture that developed genuinely in the absence of influence from Old World civilization. A fully independent data point on the development of literary culture—the kind that we know wrote philosophy, history, mathematics! And yet we barely have any of it. Can you imagine how much we might learn about humanity, about cultural universals and cultural particularities, about the history of Mesoamerica, from being able to read that work and compare it to what we know?

But it's gone. It's gone because the Spanish burned it and made learning the Maya script illegal. And it's gone because codices rot in the tropical heat and humidity, so unless you've got a continuous scribal tradition it's all going to disappear. We can't even read Maya cursive; we know there was Maya cursive, and it's likely what most codices were composed in, but it's almost all gone!

And of course this is worst for the remaining Maya themselves, who in addition to being deprived economically and legally by Spain and its colonial legacy, have been deprived of the dignity and respect that comes (for better or worse) from being part of a cultural tradition that produced great and widely respected works.

I just, you know, I just wish it wasn't gone!

But as I always say on this topic, a point of optimism: the jungles of southern Mexico and Guatemala are barely explored, they're dense and they almost certainly hide many things yet. Maybe, one day, some hidden cache will be discovered, a scribal workshop collapsed perfectly to protect the codices within from the damp. We can only hope.

The National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City has announced the discovery of the Codices of San Andrés Tetepilco, three codices nearly 500 years old, telling the history of the city of Tenochtitlán. It includes details of life before and after European contact and conquest, written in a mix of Nahuatl, Spanish, and Indigenous Mesoamerican painting styles.

The indigenous people of Mexico and Central America, including civilizations before the Aztecs, had a very complete written history. However, most of these texts were burned by Spanish conquistadores, making findings like this very exciting.

In regards to my last reblog on the scale of Thedas, latitude and stuff. I’ve been thinking about how much thought I give all this. Especially because this topic is one I’ve been talking with a lot of people about lately. It crops up a lot with people who, like me enjoy natural world building or are fanfic writers. Or really anyone who sits down and reads the lore at length. More times then not the question of Thedas’s scale comes up.

So, I want to establish I am very well aware that I’m likely giving it more thought than the devs. I have that luxury as a fan and consumer of the series. It is extremely relevant for me because I like making maps for the series, plotting out travel paths, and scaling things for da ttrpg campaigns I write.

So because I think about it a lot, I notice all the many different scales of Thedas in terms of travel time. How the scale they gave the ttrpg doesn’t match up with any scale they established in the main games or books. I think if the devs sat down and thought about establishing a standard scale and also considering just basic stuff we also wouldn’t have the Deep Roads be 2-4 miles / 3.21-6.43 km below sea level and display a lack of geothermal qualities. I think they’d consider how they built a world with at least 9.1 million people and tons of mega fauna such as giants and dragons and 14’/4.26 m tall bears that hunt dragons, all squished into roughly 1/4 of Europe and how much that isn’t really sustainable. How there would be much more impact if nature encroachment in civilization and how common things like that would be in places. Which they do consider it to a degree, I’m not saying they don’t. But I think if they thought about it just to make the world something that holds up a little better to idle musings, it wouldn’t be a bad thing. That the world would feel more real and alive and also narratively give them more to work with.

The contradictions and lack of consideration for the natural world has always been one of my critiques of Dragon Age, among other things. The reason why that is, is mostly because of a noticeable trend the lack of natural world building in fantasy. It’s a topic that has been discussed elsewhere and at length by other people, but to summarize nature is slowly having less and less impact in fantasy even in an ambient quality. Obviously this isn’t a universal statement, nor a universally required thing for a story to explore and have. That there are things that do focus on and explore it, but speaking in general terms, it is a trend in the majority of media.

Which for me is a bummer as it is an aspect of writing and world building I enjoy. I really like themes of man vs nature and to have that you need to have a basic level of natural world building. Which BioWare doesn’t really explore in Dragon Age despite having elements of it - such as how regular raw lyrium is explosive, mages get sick around all lyrium unless it is diluted to a safe amount for mages, and raw lyrium straight up kills them if they’re in the same room.

So then you have questions of how do mages go/handle being underground with such a risk? Dwarves have stone sense but would mages be able to tell when they’re getting close to large lyrium deposits because they’re getting sick? Does this impact grey warden mages? Darkspawn mages?

Things that don’t get fully acknowledged or explored despite being mentioned casually in codices most people don’t read. And they don’t for a couple of reasons such as potential coding issues but also all the questions you’d have to ask:

How would you implement that as a mechanic? Would you lock mage players out of entire areas featuring raw lyrium? Would they take environmental damage if you wanted the players to explore it regardless? Would it be a mechanic only applied by in harder difficulty modes? Do you acknowledge it in banter but not in any other way? Create a way to explain why the pc mage and their mage companions aren’t dropping dead?

BioWare’s answer seems to seemingly just ignore it because it would make gameplay too challenging/punishing and likely might not be fun for a player to deal with. But they compromise by keeping the lore active in the canon through codices and low impact additions. Which is a completely okay solutions, not my preferred but I get why they do it.

When I approach this lore, I do so without expecting them to fully flesh out each nation or know which city has the most resources and the geologically rich lands in said country. Dragon Age, and BioWare in general, relies on semi-soft world building. The world was after all designed for a game. They only need to build out what they need and what hopefully won’t paint them into a corner with future installments.

Additionally, the writing style for Dragon Age doesn’t suit the hard world building that I prefer, I’m quite aware of that but also know that when it comes to talk about world building in any media, there is always the issue of people (like me) who world build for fun and consider all these small aspects but ultimately they aren’t always needed and necessary for the story a game like Dragon Age is telling.

Dragon Age is told with the intention of things being given from an unreliable narrator. Built on the concept of: there’s three sides to the truth, what x thinks happens, what y thinks happens, and then what actually happened. Which works and I love the premise.

That said, I think that it also impacts lore that shouldn’t be subjected to the unreliable narrator. Foundation or anchor lore points to be specific. Which, as we know, BioWare has always struggled with consistency in their lore, particularly with Dragon Age.

Distance is one of those foundational points that shouldn’t change, and it’s also one of those points that you don’t have to give exact travel times. You can leave it vague and stick to the official statements like the ones we have of Ferelden being the size of England (or Ireland depending on the source you use). If you’re going to be giving specifics, then I think being consistent with how long it travels to get to point a to b and not changing it multiple times in one game should be a basic expectation that is met.

Other ones the series has and is pretty consistent with is how we know Thedas has 24 hours a day, they have seasons like we expect, and are in the southern hemisphere.

Do they sometimes slip up because editing doesn’t catch they’ve made a reference that applies only to the northern hemisphere? Yeah, and that’s not bad. There are a lot of people working on the project and things slip through.

I know I have the luxury to think about Thedas in a capacity that allows for the hard world building that I like. I also know I focus on and enjoy aspects of lore that are not exactly popular for their main audience and are pretty niche.

I don’t expect BioWare to world build how I do because I’m not world building for a massive and varied audience. Not even when I do world building for my tabletop games, because I’m catering to a smaller and more specific audience.

Still I think it’s valid and worth pondering these little elements of the world building. For fun, appreciation, and to nurture one’s own creativity and understanding of media, the world, and what they think makes a believable world.

Devs might not have time to consider it but we sure do and that’s half the fun of enjoying media I think.

IL PATTO FAMILIARE

In ogni famiglia esiste, implicito, un patto familiare.

Nessuno lo dice, nessuno ne parla e consciamente nessuno della famiglia sa che esiste.

Esso opera totalmente a livello inconscio e tuttavia guida silenziosamente ogni azione di ogni membro della famiglia.

Ne gestisce le scelte, il sentire, i pensieri e soprattutto - e questo e’ il suo scopo principale- lo mantiene legato al nucleo familiare come un patto di sangue o una fedele alleanza.

In questo la famiglia può somigliare in tutto e per tutto ad una cosca mafiosa che finché agisci come lei vuole, ti protegge e ti nutre, ma prova a fare un passo che tradisca quel patto e sei fuori, abbandonato, schifato e in casi estremi anche ucciso.

Ho visto persone brillanti, capaci, con immense potenzialità, sabotarsi e ridimensionarsi, all’apparenza immotivatamente, le ho viste soffrire e disperarsi, rovinare relazioni, perdere possibilità, sempre senza spiegarsi il perché.

Analizzandole in profondità scoprivo che provenivano da situazioni familiari chiuse, tipo setta, dove ogni membro aveva il solo compito di mantenere in vita il gruppo-famiglia.

Famiglie implose e collassate su se stesse, depresse, senza scambi creativi con l’ambiente esterno, piene di frustrazione e paure, e l’unico modo per sopravvivere e proteggersi e’ restare uniti nella gabbia.

Il problema e’ quando nasce la pecora nera, il cosiddetto paziente designato, cioè quello che e’ destinato a portare a galla il copione e sbatterlo in faccia alla famiglia, con la diretta conseguenza di essere sbattuto fuori come una minaccia.

Questi figli sono portatori di guarigione, prima di tutto per se stessi e poi anche per il sistema familiare.

So the Titans have been around since before humans were basically even evolved, so it can be reasonably assumed they've seen basically all of human history.

That being said, what are each of the Titans' personal favorite eras of history and why?

Oh lordy, I gotta look up world history for this. Sabaton, I've failed you!

Goji is partial to the Uruk Period because it takes him back to his youth thinking about the early evolution of human civilization and language. Some nights when he's feeling especially nostalgic, he recites the Hurrian Hymn to Nikkal when the moon is full. He also started getting interested in Japanese history particularly around the Mongol invasions. If he were to try a video game in Shamhat, it would be Ghost of Tsushima for just that reason.

Mothra doesn't like to play favorites because the whole world is fascinating to her, but she gets nostalgic when reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Rodan will throw hands with anyone who reduces the Aztecs to the "haha stabby people" because he remembers Tenochtitlan at its peak, he remembers their ingenious floating gardens and iconic architecture, he remembers their knowledge of medicine and astronomy and mathematics, he remembers the fucking codices!

Ghidorah loves empires, and no empire has his complete attention than the Roman Empire. Everything about it, from the arts and architecture to the politics to the military to, of course, the gladiator games.

Già che c'erano potevano pure mettere un paio di frustate prima e dopo l'ascolto. L’iniziativa è una scopiazzatura della legge sul “battito fetale” in vigore in Ungheria. In realtà, spiega la Ginecologia, i feti nella fase iniziale della gravidanza, quando si verifica la maggior parte degli aborti, non hanno ancora un cuore funzionante, ma solo gruppi di cellule che inviano segnali elettrici. Il suono del “battito cardiaco”; viene generato dal monitor a ultrasuoni per rappresentare questi impulsi elettrici. Non è un vero suono di valvole cardiache che funzionano come si sente in un adulto o in un bambino usando uno stetoscopio. Da quando Orbán, definito dalla Meloni “patriota d’europa”, è salito al potere nel 2010, il suo governo ha promosso i “valori tradizionali della famiglia“ e ha introdotto una serie di misure volte a rispondere al calo della natalità nel Paese. Tuttavia, in precedenza non aveva mai tentato di modificare le leggi, già restrittive, che regolano il diritto all’aborto. Il timore, che misura dopo misura, di restrizione in restrizione, anche da noi, possa accadere qualcosa di analogo è più che fondato. “La cosa più grave sta avvenendo in Umbria. - ha denunciato la parlamentare di Sinistra Italiana Elisabetta Piccolotti - Abbiamo segnalazioni di donne che vogliono interrompere la gravidanza ma sono costrette ad ascoltare il battito del feto. Non si può fare l'operazione prima di ascoltare questo battito. Una pratica presente per legge nell'Ungheria di Orban. Nel primo giorno di lavori in Parlamento, lo ricordiamo, Maurizio Gasparri ha presentato un Ddl per modificare l’art. 1 del codice civile. In parole povere, il senatore di “Forza Italia “, vuole riconoscere la capacità giuridica al concepito, garantendogli pieni diritti già all'atto del concepimento e non dopo la nascita, come succede ora. Quindi, occhio. Le donne che decidono di abortire, al contrario, meritano di trovare nei nostri ospedali personale capace di assistenza vera, e non di subire sofferenze ulteriori. E quasi mai è così, visto l’abuso che viene fatto dell’obiezione di coscienza.

Mythology in our daily lifes: Mythologic symbolism in Football Teams

This is a post i want to do for a while, because one of my passions in studying mythology and one of the main topics i like to study is how Mythology is embedded in our daily lives and modern culture.

Football is the most popular sport on Earth, and as in many other sports, it has deep roots with myths. I personally have great interest in how sports connect us as Humans, and i started noticing how some teams have their symbology and their visual identity completely tied to mythology!

Hey, this post will be more less of an essay, and more an irreverent commentary. With all due respect to all the topics i will talk about here, but i will be a bit more casual in this text.

I took some examples to write about, and i will focus on those teams shields. The examples i have here are specifically from National Teams, but this can also apply for regional clubs as well. I just thought the examples i have here are a bit more straight to my point! If you have any regional club you want to show, because they have mythology embedded in their emblem or identity as well, please do!

So, let's start by the easiest:

Mexico National Team:

The Mexico National Team honestly have one of the best looking logos on Earth right now, and it has everything to do with their own country Mythology.

According to the Aztec Codices, the founding myth of Tenochtitlan (capital of Aztec civilization, and later reborn as the Mexico City) should be done where an Eagle was seen eating a snake in a Cactus. Legend has, this was seen in an island inside a giant lake, that would later become Tenochtitlan. The city was made of small islands connected inside the lake, but was destroyed and the lake drained by the Spanish Invaders in the 16th Century.

There's some variations on this legend, as well. The Codex Fejérváry-Mayer does depict just an Eagle attacking a snake, while the Ramirez Codex corroborates the more popular version of the tale, that has the Cactus.

In other texts from the time, the specific creature being targeted by the Eagle is not specified.

The Aztec Codices are nothing more than registers from the civilizations on Central America, like painted books and documentations of their society. Many were lost to time, or destroyed on purpose by Spanish Invaders. Others, like those i have mentioned are well preserved or at least transcribed. This makes sourcing this tale not a very hard task, you can look it up yourself!

The Eagle, Serpent and Cactus became the most popular version of the tale. So much so, it became the coat of arms of Mexico, and the symbol is as well present in their national flag. The eagle is rumored to represent the solar and war deity, and Patron god of the capital city Tenochtitlan: Huītzilōpōchtli. While, it is true that Huītzilōpōchtli was connected to birds, more so the Hummingbird, there's also the suggestion it was connected to Eagles, which makes this shield much more iconic. Not only Mexico is evoking its ancestral god strength to guide the country, but also to play a world cup. Which i find pretty neat.

Analyzing the design, they have gone for spike outlines representing the cactus, while some kind of cubic shape (resembling Aztec aesthetic) go around, with the colors of the Mexican flag. The traditional Eagle is instead roosted with one leg on a football ball, which is the classic Tellstar model, that debuted in...You guessed! 1970 world cup,held at Mexico! A perfect match of the sport history, and national culture from Mexico, but as well many depictions of Mythology in a subtle manner in the logo. I really like it!

Japan National Team

This shield was the reason i started to study about this topic to begin with, because i bought a Japan national team shirt, and started to notice Yatagarasu on its crest! Yes, the legendary three-legged-crow that guided emperror Jimu through Yamato.

The Yatagarasu legend is pretty simple, and it says this bird is a manifestation of ''divine will'', sent by Amaterasu herself to guide Jimu in his quest to found what would be modern day Japan, according to the myth.

According to the Kojiki, Yatagarasu was sent by Takamimusubi specifically. While the Amaterasu version is from the Kojiki. In the Nihon Shiki a rather different version of the crow, and his lineage can be seen.

Another fun fact is that, in all of Yatagarasu mentions in Japan's myth, originally there was no mention about the number of legs! This was later added after assimilation of nearby cultures that also had Three-Legged-Crows in their myths, such as Korea and China. This, however is just a theory scholars came with, and it could be also a misinterpretation caused by time.

Ok, but what exactly did Yatagarasu helped Jimu with?

Glad you asked!

According to a myth known as ''Eastern Expedition'', Yatagarasu was guiding Jimu while the later was trying to cross Seto Sea to the Kinki region, in his quest to establish the Yamato court and his country. Guided by the legendary Crow, they decided to attack from the east, crossing to the west during their quest of conquer, since attacking from the west did not prove helpful before. According to the tale, that was because Jimu, descending from Amaterasu should follow the Sun.

This was just one of the registers of the creature, that is some times regarded as guardian of Amaterasu herself. Many instances on record (both scholars and popular records) that, Yatagarasu also protected Amaterasu. In my research i did not found much evidence of this being recorded, but i also do not speak Japanese so... If you do, and know something please correct me!

It is also seems very common knowledge the Yatagarasu is very much worshipped in the Kumano region! But i should dive a bit more into that if i ever cover this Crow specifically, in the future!

But what is important is that, this creature was recorded in the Kojiki, Nihonshoki, and other archaeological sites, like murals and even mirrors!

But why is Yatagarasu balling in the Japanese national team shield then?

Yatagarasu became a symbol of guidance to victory, and even before the founding of the team, in 1921, the Crow with three legs was already in use as family crests, and even in postal services. It would become associated with football when Japanese Football Association adopted it as a mascot in the 1930s. The crow, however, would just appear in kits during the 1980s.

The logo did not changed much during years, just slightly. The crow is always dominating a ball with one feet, while standing in the other two feet. The color red also symbolizes the sun, which is important as a national identity and the identity of the myth itself. In later iterations, such the more recent, the ball lack details, making it more like a sun.

Yatagarasu is also the official mascot of the JFA (Japanese Football Association) since 1931. Many associate the Yatagarasu link with football, being because the football pionner Nakamura Kakunosuke, ''Japan's football father'' was born in the Kumano region. He was a high school senior of Uchino Tairei. This football coach designed the JFA logo himself!

Even the Kumano Shrine officials accepted this new role of the deity. One of the shrines even has a statue of the crow with a football, just like the JFA logo. Some complexes also houses memorials to sports achievements.

This is not my only source to this text, but there's a good chunk of information i could not cover, like some political background and more!

For me it is pretty cool overall how a mythological symbol changed over the years, and even embraced such a recent sport as football. Despite of the political connotations of its time, i believe that this is a very notorious occurrence, that should be studied more in this field!

Next we have a big one:

Brazil

Brazil's logo in 1990 and Brazil logo during the 2020s. See if you spot the mythological reference in there!

Brazil is one of the behemoths of the sport, even if in a bit of a transitory and bad phase nowadays, the national team of Brazil, (also called ''Seleção'' which translates directly to ''The Selection'' referencing its the top players being selected to be there) managed to finish in the top 10 during the last five World Cup editions. It is also the first team to win it 3 times, and also the first and only to win it 5 times, making it a team loaded with history. But also symbology, that blends with the World Cup and Football history itself, which in turn blends with Mythology as you will see in a minute.

Starting by the newer shield, it is simple. All the colors of the national flag can be seen in it, and every time the team win another world cup, they add one star to it. In the center we have a Pate Cross. The Pate cross does not have anything mythological involving it, it was just from the Christ's Order an Order in which the first person to discover the territory one day would become Brazil, was a part of. That is just it.

Honestly i don't fully understand the reason for it to be there, but apparently it is so important that the Brazilian Football Confederation itself made it against their rules to remove it? Fine i guess...

But really, i think the one which is really here to be talked about is their 1990-1991 shield, in which we have the Jules Rimet trophy instead of the cross. And that is what makes this shield so interesting for us. The Jules Rimet Trophy was the first trophy of the World Cup, and it would be given permanently to the winner of the tournament that could win it 3 times first. Brazil did it with Pelé in 1970, giving the trophy to the country definitively and getting the tournament a new one, the one with a ball in the top which you all are used to see nowadays.

This shield while iconic, was very short lived... Sadly, it lasted less than a year!

The Trophy tiself represents no other than Nike, the Greek goddess of victory! Nike would help with war, athletics, debates and any other type of direct competition. Nike is more commonly associated with her iconic headless statue, and her wings always flying towards victory.

She is also usually depicted in myths as one of the first goddesses to offer help to Zeus in the Titanomachy, the war against the Titans. She then became an attendant to Zeus and Athena. There are some scholars who disagree on Nike's origin, was her part of Athens that became a whole? Or was always an unique goddess? It is hard to define for us, as both were important in the city of Athens, making it hard to distinguish.

Nike some times is described as the one who can judge mortals and gods in competition. Not only war, but music, athletics, or any given competition. She will always be on the side who deserves to win. Thus judging the winner as deserving. Nike was often described as helping athletes, and many times this is described as such. For instance here: Pindar Nemean 5 where it is said the Athlete Euthymenes of Aegina has ''Fallen in the arms of Victory''. This is a direct reference to Nike.

Nike also helped Zeus during his fight against Typhon, even protecting Zeus with her shield. This however only according to the Nonnos' Dionysiaca. The Theogony does not mention this happening.

If you go by the Homeric Hymns, describe Nike as being the daughter of Ares, while other sources like the Theogony says that Nike came from Styx and Pallas.

Whoever was her true parents, during the early 20th century, Nike became associated with sports and athleticism in general, having her image printed in Olympic medals. Olympic games that were initially started imitating the ancient Greek games, specifically.

Nike is so associated with sports nowadays, her image is always on the medals as in the latest ones, for the Paris 2024 games

So, when we come back to the 1990 Brazil shield, it all connects back to Nike, as if she was the patron of the team, guiding them to victory. Which makes extremely funny the fact that, the world cup after they removed her, they actually won it.

But in any case, i believe Nike could very much be brought back to the Brazilian Shield, since it has a deep connection to the history of the team and its past glories. The idea of Nike guiding the most victorious team back to its path of glory is extremely nice, and could be a very cool marketing campaign. But hey, what i know? I am just an amateur Mythology Scholar.

I thought this would be a fun and quirky topic to talk about. I really enjoy how Mythology blends with our life and culture so well. For me it is fascinating, and i think this is a good example on how nice it is!
