Yes, the new-and-improved “positive” stuff still sucks.
(Image description: A 4 panel cartoon by Autball.
1: Two figures (one red, one yellow) are in an empty classroom. Yellow is putting something we can’t see on the wall and says, “My kid saw a reference to dunce hats in a Youtube video the other day, and she asked me what they meant.”
2: Same scene. Yellow grabs a blue bin while saying, “I told her what they were about and that they actually used to be a thing in schools, and she couldn’t believe it!” Red is carrying a poster over to the wall and says, “Oh man, yeah, so cruel.”
3: Same scene. Red is putting their poster on the wall and says, “And then there was a time when they’d make kids write lines over and over on the chalkboard about what they did wrong, in front of EVERYONE.” Yellow pulls a clothespin out of the blue bin and replies, “Ugh. So embarrassing, and not even helpful!”
4: Same characters, but we can now see what they’re been working on. They stand in front of a decorated bulletin board which has: a poster of a child sitting “properly” at a desk entitled “I’m Ready to Learn!;” a poster of the classroom rules; a rewards chart with the names of all the children in the class on it; and a rainbow colored clip chart covered in clothespins with the children’s names on them. While attaching a clothespin, Yellow says, “I’m so glad we don’t use public shame and humiliation in the classroom like that anymore.” Red, finishing up with the rewards chart, says, “Totally.”)

hi teachers, i really need to tell you something. cw: physical abuse of a child
every time i got a note sent home, my mother would beat me heavily with a belt. one time the buckle hit my front tooth and that's why i have a crown there now. whenever i got in trouble, usually for having side conversations during the lesson, i would cry and panic, beg them not to (which never worked, maybe because they thought i was just being a brat, maybe because it would send the wrong message) and at times have to get through the rest of a six hour schoolday knowing all the while what was waiting for me at home. after the beating i was locked in my room for the day. the next day i'd have to sit on the welts. this was the routine from 2005-2010.
i don't know how classroom management works. i know you can't fix everything, and that cps fails most kids. i just ask that if you have a student who seems more upset or frightened than they should after getting in a little trouble, you talk to them. maybe you could come up with a punishment that doesn't involve leaving them at the mercy of their parents, since some parents don't have much mercy.

this is my new classroom behavior management tool, im really hoping it works out because i think it could be such a good idea
Here’s How It Works…
The Game: Teachers vs Students
Rewards: Candy, Extra Recess, Gold Coins*
Rules:
1. Every time the class is behaving, they get a point
2. Every time they’re not, the Teacher gets a point
If the students beat the teacher they get a reward at the end of the day!
GOLD COINS: If I’m subbing for multiple days, I have them earn gold coins that they can return to me on the last day… The number of coins they earn = the amount of candy they can have
everything that i used to make this was either $1 or free; the frame, stickers, and paint was all from the Dollar Store and i designed the template on Canva for free

Back to School is Upon Us
School starts in a few weeks, and instagram has been reminding me of some things that I feel the need to share, in no particular order:
1. How you decorate and design your classroom can affect how well (or poorly) students can focus. Neon rainbow everything with every square inch of wall covered in 14,000 “cute” but illegible fonts will likely be overstimulating for your students and will definitely be more of a distraction than a help.
2. Rewards, points systems, prizes, and other extrinsic motivators are bandaid methods of managing behavior. They are not classroom management. They will not last. They will undermine your students’ motivation to do the right thing because it’s the right thing. And when one system stops working, it becomes an endless cycle of trying to find the next shiny thing that will keep some semblance of order and productivity in the room.
3. BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT IS NOT CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT. Behavior management is not classroom management. Behavior management is. not. classroom. management.
But classroom management IS behavior management.
Classroom management means having a plan for ordering the classroom and how students will accomplish various procedures throughout the day. Classroom management means knowing how you want things done: how do you want students to enter the room in the morning? Where do they put their things? Where do they sit? What will they do when they get there? How will they get materials? How will they turn in work? What are the expectations for behavior in the room? What happens when expectations are not met?
The more structured and clear your expectations and procedures are, the more consistently you teach and practice and follow through on them, the easier they are for students to accomplish. Students NEED structure. Anything you want students to do must be explicitly taught.
Points and rewards and punishments undermine student ownership and motivation. Rewards are fun every once in a while, but let’s be honest, do you really want to have to manage all of that every day?
The best classroom and behavior management is to a) know what you want students to do and how you want them to do it; b) explicitly TEACH them what and how, and then practice until it’s automatic; and c) be consistent.
Consistent, clear expectations and follow-through will trump every other behavior management involving prizes and bribes and punishments.
4. Just because something is on Instagram, Pinterest, or TikTok, just because something looks cute or fun, doesn’t mean it’s effective, good for kids, or best practice. There are evidence-based practices that are both effective AND engaging. Be judicious.

Teacher MUST HAVES- The Veruca Salt Syndrome
For More #teaching advice and all things classroom related, follow this quirky teacher theSPinnovativeclassroom.org
I don’t know about you, but I love all things classroom and teacher related. Stuff- I’ve got a lot of it. And this carries into my clothing and personal things, too. I wouldn’t say I’m a hoarder. I’m a collector of things. It’s Teacher Confession Time. I have to put myself out there. I need to help others. This blog, my advice, THIS VIDEO…I hope it helps someone. I fear it may be too late for me.
I’ve got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty. I’ve got whozits and whatzits galore. You want thingamabobs? I’ve got twenty! But who cares. Big Deal. I want morrrrrrrrrrre!
I’m an advertiser’s dream. The marketing companies? It’s me they love. Why? Because when they say “it’s a must have” and it’s on a reel, story, or video…I immediately NEED it. And since it’s so easy to just click and buy, I tend to do that.
It’s the “Veruca Salt” Syndrome. I’ve got it, and maybe you do as well. If you know your Charlie and the Chocolate Factory characters, you know Veruca. She sees it, she wants it, she buys it. And don’t tell her no. She. Needs. It. Now.
Hi, my name is DJ. I’m a teacher and parent, and I have Veruca Salt Syndrome.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gotten so many great things that way! Things I love and use every single day. But I’ve also gotten just as many “I don’t need this or these” items.
My advice to everyone is to stop and think before you click a link. Think don’t link. Because in the end, do you really need it? Will you really use it? Just because it works for Miss So-and-So in her adorable video, does not mean it will work for you.
This is fantastic advice. I hope it helps someone out there. And maybe one day I’ll have the willpower to use my own advice more often!
For complete transparency, I wrote this blog post after opening an Amazon package filled with some sort of art supply that I needed for a project I have long forgotten about and have zero time for now. Dragon eyes?? Honestly though, they look super cool. I could probably use them to do a very cool writing activity. Was that what I bought them for? Who knows. I have two million of them now. In the meantime, cross your fingers for me that no more packages are delivered my way.

Fox Sighting May Mean Trickery is Afoot Foxes are often depicted as tricksters and thieves. Although many Native American tribes see foxes as intelligent and potentially helpful animals, that is not always the case. Instead, some traditions, like those from the Quechua people, hold that foxes are a bad omen, especially seeing more than one.

Tips to Maximize Use of Technology in Education
The National Education Association of the United States estimates that the average teacher uses 27 different types of technology, from laptops to e-readers to interactive projectors. For school administrators, using the right technology is essential to classroom success.
Whether you are a teacher looking for tips and techniques to use in your classroom, or an administrator trying to decide which technologies will make the best use of your limited budget, here are some tips and tricks to maximizing tech use in education.
Tumblr media
Integrating computer technology into the classroom is a challenge teachers face every day. The internet is a vital tool that helps students learn, teach and connect to the rest of the world. Nowadays, most students spend their maximum time online, so teachers must figure out how to harness the power of this technology before it takes over their future opportunities.
1. Access to the Internet
In 2014, an estimated $4 billion was spent on notebook computers for internet access across all education levels, with an increase in 2015 specifically within K-12 schools across the United States. Also, 87% of all schools have had Internet access for at least 5 years. 97% of all schools have access to computers.
However, only 60% of schools use a 1-to-1 device initiative; and 80% of teachers say that student performance improves when technology is used in the classroom.
2. Live streaming
You can also opt for YouTube's live streaming feature, in which anyone can go to the educational stream and watch lessons live or on-demand later. Most of the students can view these lessons from home, which has made it easier for me to close out this quarter.
3. Google Chromebooks
It has opened up so many opportunities for students. It is a perfect option for low-income families, as this technology has opened up a world of learning. You can easily gather your students' work and assessments in the cloud. It's also fun to use Google Docs and Sheets to make classwork more collaborative and engaging. With these Chromebooks and your phone, you can become a "teacherpreneur."
4. PowerPoint Presentations and Games
These types of presentations can introduce a classroom concept while also encouraging participation. Links to videos that accompany the ideas presented in the PowerPoint can be embedded within the slides, besides graphics and bulleted information. For example, Kahoot, an educational app for the classroom, can review information after a lesson or unit.
At ILM, we can integrate with varied popular tools you're already using including PowerSchool and Google Classroom, giving you the freedom to spend more time teaching and less time navigating between suites. You can contact our experts for more information.

Educational institutions, from schools to colleges and institutes, require robust ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software to streamline operations and enhance productivity. Let's explore the top 10 education ERP software solutions, with Proctur leading the pack as the ultimate choice for comprehensive school and college management.
Proctur: Proctur stands out as a leading education ERP software, offering tailored solutions for school, college, and institute management. With its versatile features like school ERP, college ERP, and institute ERP, Proctur simplifies administrative tasks, automates processes, and ensures seamless communication between stakeholders. Edunexttech: Edunexttech is another notable education ERP software renowned for its user-friendly interface and comprehensive features. It caters to various educational institutions, providing solutions for academic management, student information systems, and parent-teacher communication. While Edunexttech offers valuable functionalities, its scope may be more limited compared to Proctur's expansive capabilities.
Classpro: Classpro specializes in class management solutions, offering features like attendance tracking, timetable management, and performance analytics. While Classpro serves as an effective tool for class-based institutions like coaching centers and tuition classes, it may lack the breadth of functionality required for full-scale school or college management.
Classplus: Classplus is designed primarily for coaching institutes and tutors, providing tools for course management, student engagement, and online assessments. While Classplus excels in its niche market, it may not offer the comprehensive features needed for larger educational institutions.
Entab: Entab offers ERP solutions tailored for schools, covering aspects like admissions, academics, and finance management. While Entab provides essential functionalities for school management, its focus may not extend to the complexities of higher education institutions like colleges and universities.

While MyClassCampus caters to various educational needs, its scalability and customization options may vary compared to Proctur's offerings.

While EduSys covers essential aspects of educational administration, its usability and integration capabilities may differ from Proctur's seamless platform.
SchoolPad: SchoolPad specializes in school management solutions, offering features for admission management, parent engagement, and staff collaboration. While SchoolPad serves as a valuable tool for schools, it may not offer the same level of versatility and scalability as Proctur's comprehensive ERP system.
SchoolTonic: SchoolTonic offers ERP solutions for schools and educational institutions, including features for student management, fee collection, and academic planning. While SchoolTonic provides essential functionalities, its customization options and support services may not match Proctur's standards.
Fedena: Fedena provides ERP solutions for schools and colleges, offering features for attendance tracking, exam management, and hostel management. While Fedena caters to educational needs, its flexibility and integration capabilities may not align with Proctur's advanced ERP system.
In conclusion, while various education ERP software solutions cater to different needs and preferences, Proctur stands out as the ultimate choice for comprehensive school and college management. With its extensive features, customizable solutions, and seamless integration, Proctur empowers educational institutions to optimize their operations, enhance communication, and achieve excellence in education.
