In some respects, you might say that the themes and ideas of a film like Coppola’s latest are ones that have been in her oeuvre for years. If detractors have sometimes found the director’s work distancing, more interested in aesthetics than interiority, Priscilla both does little to disprove them and also directly inverts that. Priscilla is a confection that knows its one from the opening beat, focusing as it does in a knowing and enjoyable montage of slipper-pink nail polish and cutesy knick-knacks and inky black cat-eye liner. The film knows it’s a confection because Priscilla Beaulieu Presley knows she is, too. If she doesn’t create this prettified, grown-up self for public consumption – and more directly, for her older lover’s consumption – she might crack open like a meringue and learn there’s nothing inside.
The film, which is bookended essentially by Priscilla’s entrance and finally her departure from Graceland, is in some respects Coppola’s most complete statement on the dissociative qualities of her female characters. These things are linked to their surroundings and physicality – the kind of femininity that we may both take delight in and which ultimately ties us in knots. If dissociative feminism is a topic of conversation these days – that is, the removal of oneself from the body in an attempt to avoid discomfort or pain – Priscilla feels embodied in it, both in performance and in Coppola’s free-floating, daydreamy visual style and patterning.
Christina Newland, In Priscilla, Sofia Coppola tells a story that is frighteningly familiar

Thinking Aloud About Film: Cinema Rediscovered Round-up Day 1, 2022
We continue our discussion of Cinema Rediscovered 2022 with a round-up of the first full day of programming and two of the events that kicked off the program yesterday: The Philip French Memorial Lecture with Samira Ahmed and the UK premiere of the restored version of Lost Highway. We touch on two key strands of the program. The first is  Pre-Code Hollywood: Rules are Made to be Broken, curated…

Pre-code Hollywood: Rules are Made to be Broken
Pre-code Hollywood: Rules are Made to be Broken
It has been said by many a wise soul that every Hollywood silent is essentially Pre-code. That sentence itself is my entire justification for sharing this with you. The fabulous Christina Newland and I have collaborated on a Pre-code Hollywood project to make this hot summer sizzle with a little more steam. But yes, it’s all talkies. We have curated five films from Park Circus and Warner Bros’s…

In a recent interview with Spanish paper El País, Banderas recalled the pair’s first meeting in 1981.: ”'You have a very romantic face,’ Pedro told Antonio. ‘You should do movies. Goodbye.’”

Back in February, when it looked like Blonde might premiere at Cannes, [the director Andrew] Dominik boasted that his film’s excessive intensity was “the audience’s fucking problem”—a preemptive strike against critics that doubled, possibly, as an acknowledgment of his own shameless prurience. “[The movie] is not running for public office,” he insisted. “It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.” More recently, in a fascinating and combative interview with Christina Newland in Sight and Sound, Dominik claimed, straight up, that he didn’t have much affection or respect for Monroe’s movies, a position borne out by Blonde’s almost total exclusion of her on-screen work.

'The explosive first reactions to Christopher Nolan’s WWII epic “Oppenheimer” have lit the internet ablaze.
The film hosted its world premiere in Paris, shortly before the cast walked out of the U.K. premiere amid the SAG-AFTRA strike being announced July 14. “Oppenheimer” is set to debut in theaters July 20 and stars Cillian Murphy as the titular father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer. Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr. are among the star-studded ensemble cast.
Writer-director Nolan used real explosions in lieu of CGI to mimic the first detonation of the atomic bomb during the Trinity Test. The entire film was shot in IMAX. “Oppenheimer” is inspired by 2005 book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin and centers on Manhattan Project leader J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy) as he grapples with the moral repercussions of creating the bomb.
Murphy’s co-star Damon called his performance a “marathon” of sorts to balance the genius physicist’s academic and personal lives. And critics agree: Empire magazine editor Nick de Semlyen tweeted, “‘Oppenheimer’ is a roaring beast of a film, largely set in research labs but feeling like an odyssey into hell. Cillian Murphy is mesmerizing, and Nolan is at full power; it feels like the film itself becomes radiation-poisoned as it goes on. A bleak triumph.”
Criterion writer Christina Newland added, “Cillian Murphy is genuinely so incredible here. Just operating at such a level of fragility and haunted knowingness and arrogant bravado; a performance as complex as the subject deserves.”
New York Magazine critic Bilge Ebiri called the film “incredible” and cited its “fearsome” approach to the weighty subject matter. “A relentlessly paced, insanely detailed, intricate historical drama that builds and builds and builds until Nolan brings the hammer down in the most astonishing, shattering way,” Ebiri tweeted.
The Playlist journalist Gregory Ellwood especially cited Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr.’s respective performances, saying Downey especially gave a career-best. AP film writer Lindsey Bahr wrote that she was “lucky” to have seen “Oppenheimer” in 70mm IMAX, which was a “once in a lifetime experience.”...'

from Christina Newland's interview with Andrew Dominick on Blonde
AD: [...]And she killed herself. Now, to me, that’s the most important thing.
OK so in the novel. that the movie is purportedly based on. she does NOT kill herself. she is murdered. she is explicitly portrayed as being full of hope and plans for the future when she goes to sleep and an assassin (the Sharpshooter, who is somewhat developed as a character throughout the book and heavily implied to be a CIA operative) enters her house and kills her in her sleep and stages an apparent suicide. now you can argue about whether that's realistic or whether it's ok and respectful to write a novel like Blonde at all (I read it young and I loved it, maybe because it depicted Marilyn as asexual and neurodivergent in ways I deeply related to, but still) but if elsewhere in the interview you're going to defend changing stuff or leaving stuff out because "that's not how it is in the book" then. fucken. bro did you even finish the fucking book

"As of late, it’s been a habit of more casual Scorsese fans to associate him only with his crime movies. In truth, he’s a wide-ranging artist as interested in genteel literary adaptations and in rediscovering classics of world cinema as he is in gang violence. But because of the flashiness and popularity of Goodfellas and Casino – and the ability to track those interests back to his earliest films, like Mean Streets – it’s been easy to characterise Scorsese as a mere chronicler of wise guys. In its own subtle way, The Irishman offers a rebuke to the critique that has plagued Scorsese for years – that he sympathises with or fails to condemn his amoral characters." - Christina Newland. A must-read!

Criterion Collection's La Strada
Criterion Collection’s La Strada
Restored by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with The Film Foundation and the Cineteca di Bologna. Restoration funding was provided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Federico Fellini’s La Strada views like a modern-day fairytale. True fairytales always end in cruelty. The movie’s backdrop is a poverty ravished war-torn Italy in the 50s. Way before Clint Eastwood tried his hand…
