Welcome to the first official Cadybear's Reviews post! We'll be starting with Rules of Engagement, which I have ranked on the "Bronze Tier" at 5 stars out of a possible 10.

Frankly, ROE was a mixed bag for me.

To start off, I know everyone and their Nana has complained about it before, but I found it incredibly pointless that our MC could only have male love interest options. There was literally nothing about her storyline that would make zero sense with a female LI. “But Audrey and Mira–” yes but they’re love interests for established side characters that you play as, rather than love interests for the character that is meant to be “your character”. Luckily this is the only time PB has ever done a male-LIs-for-MC-only story, but still.

Not that having a female love interest option would have changed how bland MC’s romance is. Even though the love interests we do get were nice characters, the romances between them and the MC are incredibly empty. I guess that’s to be expected when your nana basically forces you to marry by the end of the summer in order for you to get your inheritance, but yeah.

Most of the other romances aren’t much better. Audrey is incredibly unfair to Bookish Twin in the first two books, crying about how she “doesn’t care about her” just because she chose to focus on pursuing her career instead of Nana’s stupid list (can we please retire this trope already holy fuck). Though their moments in Book 3 and onwards were thankfully more pleasant.

Brother and Elena’s romance was weird with some ups and downs, but it became a hot mess in the Jeff Willoughby arc. I don’t even know what was going on in there. And it was even worse in Newlyweds; while Elena has every right to be upset about Brother not telling her about his ex-wife from over a year ago, she acts ridiculously petty and immature towards him over it and that made the story very unpleasant.

About the only romances that weren’t clusterfucks were Party Twin’s romances (and even then, her sole female love interest option is very sidelined) and Cousin’s romance with Chaz. I mean, they were just as shallow as the MC’s romance, but they at least felt less rushed? Considering they didn’t get married, after all.

And what I think bugs me most of all, something that I think does not get criticized nearly enough as it should: The fact that this entire story revolves around Nana having fucking quid pro quos on the shares of the inheritance money. Like… why is she putting weird conditional challenges on inheritance? Who the fuck does that?

"Oh my dear daughter MC has to find love and get married by the end of the summer in order to get her inheritance owo!" Bitch what if she ends up being aro or demi??? Or is just not ready to marry yet- especially since she spent the first two books, y’know, escaping an unfaithful and manipulative partner???? She's the last person who would be ready to marry right away.

"My son please marry your girlfriend of two years" but then the next thing you know they break up because they realized they’re a lesbian and a gay man. What are you gonna do then, Nana? Huh?? Huh??? Does Brother not get his inheritance if he’s gay???

"Party Twin must hold a job for the summer" oh yeah because that's just sooooo easy isn't it? I mean it’s not like unemployment is a major issue in today’s society or anything.

"Bookish Twin has to do this list of trying new things" and why, why, why, why, WHY is getting a tattoo on this list? As someone who is kinda very squeamish about tattoo pen needles, I would tell Nana to fuck right off, and then get a temporary tattoo instead because fuck you. And if Dinesh bitches about it being a temporary tattoo and not a real one, I WILL drop kick his ass.

And this isn’t even getting into all the other fucking challenges that Nana adds onto the first ones. Like, Nana, I get you're trying to teach the kids about family and loyalty and adventure, but putting tasks onto your grandkids’ inheritance is just such a dick move.

Fuck the Nana honestly, she’s the real villain of this story. Yeah she’s even worse than the fucking Aunt. YEAH I SAID IT. In fact how don’t I know the Aunt wouldn’t even be horrible in the first place had she not been raised by a mother who thinks it’s okay to put these kinds of quid pro quos on inheritance. Turned her into a greedy, competitive, abusive bitch raising her under that mindset. Fuck you, Nana. (Okay, okay, I’m getting a bit extreme here).

Anyways. Instead, I think we should have gotten a story about the siblings and cousin wanting to get this inheritance, but having difficulty meeting the stupid quid pro quos, and then eventually admitting to themselves that the stupid quid pro quos are indeed stupid, and then finding ways to cheat the quid pro quos, and doing so successfully.

For example:

MC tries to fall in love with someone, but realizes she’s rushing too quickly after getting cheated on, then agrees to have a fake marriage with the person (who is knowing of the fake marriage), only to divorce them right after they get the money. And then we get to decide if she wants to start building an actual romance with them or not.

Brother and Elena realize they’re a lesbian and a gay man and don’t want to marry, so they have a mutually-agreed-upon lavender wedding and then divorce the moment the Brother gets his inheritance.

I’m not sure about the rest of them, Bookish Twin could probably be the one who is most furious with Nana since she’s forced to get a tattoo, and so she gets a temporary tattoo because fuck the Nana. Party Twin, on the other hand, could be the one who minds it the least as she does seem to have motivation to hold a job for the summer, but she starts to come around when she realizes how difficult that is. IDK how she’s supposed to cheat hers tho.

But for all its problems and all the criticism it gets… I didn’t hate it. Even with the whole premise of the plot being fundamentally fucked up right from the start. It was only Choices’s 4th series, so it’s clear they were still working out a lot of things. And as shitty as Nana was for putting quid pro quos on the inheritance,I did also enjoy some of the family ties themes, as well as the Cousin’s redemption arc. It was pretty lightheated for the most part and it felt much easier to take it as a silly soap opera style story (compared to something like TNA or TBB) because it didn’t feel like it was forcing me to take it seriously.

Overall, the series as a whole to me was just lighthearted dumb fun with a little touch of emotional family themes. It has… a lot of glaring problems and it could have been much better, but ultimately, it’s not something to be taken too seriously.

(Leo x Madeleine) in a Choices Rules of Engagement drabble.

Thirty Kisses in Thirty Days Challenge with the prompt: a kiss to prove you no longer have feelings for your lover.

A/N I know. I do. But I think Madeleine was down dirty in Rules of Engagement. Maybe that's why she acted the way she did in The Royal Romance. Leo might not have taken their engagement seriously, but I believe she did.

"Madeleine? We need to..." Leo trailed off when he saw her dressed for a formal dinner.

She turned around with a forced smile.

"Good. You're back." She checked the time. "If you hurry and dress, we should make it downstairs in time."

She avoided eye contact with him. After the past couple of months of his galavanting around the Mediterranean on some cruise with that woman, she was not only disappointed with Leo but also incredibly hurt.

How could he do something like that to her? His fiance? The one he was supposed to be with? Supposed to love? Supposed to protect?

And yet he'd been captured by eager photographers with that woman in his arms! Then he had the nerve to bring her to Cordonia. The palace! He brought that woman into what would one day be their home...where they would raise their children...where they would spend the rest of their lives.

Madeleine refused to let him see just how heartbroken she was. He was supposed to be her Prince Charming. She'd grown up, believing he would be the one to make her happy. After seeing the loveless marriage of her parents, she'd secretly hoped that she could have something different.

Being told she was meant for someone gave her the security she'd craved. Madeleine worked hard to become the perfect future princess for her prince. She memorized all the rules of etiquette, studied numerous diplomacy tactics, and constantly reviewed dossiers on Cordonia's nobles and other European rulers. Every night before going to bed, she quizzed herself with flashcards on all she believed a future ruler should know.

It all seemed to be for nothing the moment she walked in on Leo and that woman. And then for him to comfort the interloper instead of her...it was too much!

Leo cleared his throat as he took off his leather jacket.

"I'm not going down to dinner."

Madeleine sighed. She was used to having to remind him of his duty.

"You must. As the Crown Prince, you can't offend the prime minister from-"

"I'm no longer the Crown Prince." He told her.

She paused. Her eyes raised to his.

"You're what?"

"I abdicated, Madeleine."

"Why?" She couldn't wrap her head around what he was saying.

He slipped his hands in his pockets. Looking away from her, he tried to find a way to make her understand.

"I think we both know I don't possess the temperament nor the inclination to be a proper ruler."

Madeleine rolled her eyes. Anyone could see that. She thought he just wouldn't make himself behave.

"I think," she tried to be diplomatic since they were engaged, "if you put your mind to it, that you could be a good king for Cordonia."

"I disagree." He walked over until he stood directly in front of her. "And I don't want it."

She rose from her chair. Her brow furrowed over his words.

"You don't want it? How can you say something like that?" She cried. "It is your destiny! God himself, allowed you to be the first born of the royal family. And you just decide to give it up?!"

"Madeleine--"

"Why would you throw away the very thing you were created for?" She pleaded. "Leo, you and I are what Cordonia needs! Our marriage and family are meant to--"

"There won't be a marriage, Madeleine." Leo said softly.

She took a step back as if struck.

"What?"

He ran his hands over his face.

"Since I'm no longer the Crown Prince, our royal engagement is over." His eyes studied hers. "I don't have to marry now."

"So, not only are you throwing away your future; you decided to toss mine in the rubbish bin too?"

"I--"

"What about our love?" She blinked back tears. "You said you loved me!"

He turned away from her, unable to watch her face as he admitted the truth.

"I tried to love you Madeleine. But when I met Katie, I realized what love really is."

Madeleine shook her head as if she could make his words disappear. This couldn't be happening. She'd done everything right! For years, she'd tried to be the woman he not only wanted but that Cordonia deserved.

"Leo," her voice trembled as she approached him. "Please. You can't mean that. Not after all we shared."

Leo faced her once more.

She licked her lips. "It's been so long since you were home." Her hands slid up his chest, arms wrapping around his neck. "We haven't been able to be alone and--"

"Stop." He pleaded, grasping her arms. "I love Katie."

Madeleine briefly closed her eyes over that particular blow to her crumbling heart.

"I gave myself to you." She whispered. Her eyes narrowed upon his. "Remember? You said that sleeping together would make us closer. Make our love grow even stronger."

Leo winced over that.

"How can you stand here and say you love that woman after all that?"

"Because you deserve to know the truth." He explained.

"I don't believe you." She declared. "I think whatever it is you feel for her is just lust."

"It isn't." He argued.

"Prove it." Madeleine challenged. "Prove that you don't feel anything for me."

Leo's lips parted to argue, yet ended up capturing hers in a kiss.

He could feel her stray tears fall as the passionless kiss continued.

"I'm sorry." He said softly against her lips. "You deserve someone better than me, someone who will love you."

Madeleine glared silently at him as her tears fell.

Leo dropped his head, running a hand through his hair. "I hope you can forgive me one day."

He grabbed his jacket on the way out. Without a backward glance, he left her and the future he'd been trapped in.

Madeleine watched Leo leave. She knew that he took all her cherished dreams with him.

i was so confused about the characters' heritage since we know the grandma was filipina, but are the main siblings 1/4 asian or 1/2 asian???? cause they "look" hapa to me. so then their mom is 100% asian and their dad is 100% white? idk. and the aunt "looks" half asian half white as well but then that would mean the grandpa is white?? you see why i had to make that family tree. anyway none of thsi matters lol

Okay serious question. How different would Choices be if Rules of Engagement never released?

We wouldn’t have:

-The Royal Romance (the events of RoE directly led to European Guy/Leo’s abdication, setting off the events of the TRR+ series)

-The Royal Holiday

-The Royal Heir

-The Royal Finale

-The Royal Masquerade (wouldn’t exist without TRR)

-Endless Summer (YES I KNOW THIS IS JARRING, but Blaire Hall and Grace’s conflict in RoE is the whole reason she decided to go to La Huerta in the first place soooooo)

-Hero (possibly, since Hero and ES were both directly intertwined)

-The Heist: Monaco (directly ties in with both RoE and TRR; the Crown Jewels of Cordonia are speculated to be your crew’s next heist, meanwhile Sybil’s good ending has her hijacking the ship from RoE)

-Crimes of Passion (Drakovia was established for the first time ever in the Choices universe during The Royal Masquerade)

Now, granted, maybe these series would have come about some way or another, but certainly not in the same way they would have were it not for the chain reaction set off by RoE. It’s certainly not my favorite series, nor is it one I necessarily even like, but you’ve got to admit it was foundational.

So I didn't mind ROE as a whole and found it mostly just dumb fun with a bit of family themes to it. MC realizing she's not ready for a new relationship and faking a marriage with one of the LIs. Elena and Brother realizing they're both gay and then also faking a marriage to each other. Bookish Twin finds ways around the list of trying new things, including getting a temporary tattoo. Party Twin uhhh... IDK how she's gonna fake holding a job but if it doesn't work out we'll just have her knock out Dinesh and rob the money, IDGAF. Anything that is these characters refusing to cater to these stupid quid pro quos is fine by me. And the best part is you can still work in the family themes and the cousin's arc with the evil Aunt and all that.
